Beanshed Anniversary Production Wows Everyone at Canowindra Public School Alongside the Strangerland filming last weekend there was another major production going on in Canowindra that we felt definitely deserves front page coverage. It was “Snapshots” at the Canowindra Public School – a wonderfully colourful and talented two-act musical celebrating the 20th anniversary of the school’s iconic Beanshed Productions. The huge cast of young actors, singers and dancers put on a series of scenarios portraying a demanding director’s auditions for a “wow”-factor story and talent, and we certainly saw a lot of memorable and amusing performances that included pirates, witches, Alice in Wonderland, the Ben Hall gang, Hamlet, The Fonze and a great closing song and dance by the Happy Days Chorus. Co-producer Helen Giger, whose son Caleb gave us a particularly dramatic hissing performance of the goblin Gollum, marked this
year’s show down as one of the best ever, with around 600 parents and visitors attending the three “Snapshots” performances. “Only two parts were taken by high school students – the rest of the entire performance was presented by the pupils, right down to infants,” Helen said. What made the show even more colourful and exciting was the beautiful high-tech lighting and effects, along with a stunning multi-sound system, provided by Helen’s husband Jon, who’s also a youth worker with the Cornerstone tertiary education community. In all, “Snapshots” was one of those happy, accomplished, heart-warming exhibitions of young talents that Canowindra and every community needs to keep its culture and creativity alive and continually vibrant. Millthorpe Markets The markets have been running since 2005 and are hosted by the Millthorpe Public School P & C Committee, with all funds raised assisting to purchase ongoing educational tools for the school. On Sunday the 6th April, people from all over ventured out to Millthorpe to see all of what the stall holders had to offer. From arts and crafts, candles, quilts, home wares to clothing, jewellery and food, the markets offered a platter of products to service everyone’s taste. The day was beautiful and sunny and very successful, as thousands of people showed up, not only to the markets, but wandered into the heritage village as well. By Jessica Jenkins

Youth beyondblue IMAGE: Movie set on wheels – the technical paraphernalia of Strangerland’s moving car sequence in Gaskill Street
The Strangerland Shoot - Turning Canowindra into Bush Town “Nathgari” If you were a tourist visiting Canowindra for the first time last week, you could have been forgiven for momentarily wondering if you’d lost your way. The River Bank Hotel was now the “Nathgari Library.” with signs outside it for “Choice Credit Union,” “Countryside Cabling” and “Supporting the Nathgari Community.” The Royal Hotel now had a sign announcing the “Nathgari Sporting Carnival” set down for March 30, a store across the street was now “Second Hand Goods and Bric-a-brac” with a very confusing phone number – 3764 3254. Of course, it was all part of the makeover that transformed part of downtown Canowindra into a red dust-blown bush town beyond Broken Hill for the week-long on-location filming for the movie Strangerland. With Nicole Kidman, Hugo Weaving and British Shakespearean actor Joseph Fiennes here as the stars of the shoot, Gaskill Street naturally attracted crowds of locals and visitors no doubt hoping to catch a glimpse of
them. Instead, they mainly saw how incredibly technical a movie shoot is, why feature movies end with an agonisingly long list of crew and production credits and, most illuminating of all, how you film close-ups of actors in a moving car without its wheels ever touching the ground. As many of us saw, the technique these days is to get a big trailer truck then load the entire set on to it – lights, sound and monitoring first, then stills and more monitoring, then the camera rostrum and camera with technicians, then the car itself covered in shade screens and reflectors, and drive the whole shebang up and down the street, take after take, to get the right shot. The filming ends tomorrow (Friday) and the cleanup of the dust-strewn Gaskill Street footpaths and storefront with it. And the mythical “Nathgari” becomes our own Canowindra again. By Derek Maitland
More than half a million young Australians believed they experienced depression or an anxiety condition over the last year, according to recently released data from Roy Morgan. New figures from the ABS show suicide is the leading cause of death for Australians aged 15 to 24 also paint a worrying picture of youth mental health in Australia. The data comes as beyondblue prepares to release a range of new resources about depression and anxiety for young people on its youth website, Youthbeyondblue, which has recently undergone a dramatic makeover. The new resources include a booklet on depression and anxiety and fact sheets on bullying, alcohol and drug use, self-harm and suicide, which will be available on Youthbeyondblue from the start of National Youth Week which started on the 4th April. beyondblue CEO Kate Carnell AO said “Checking in with a mate who may be struggling with depression or anxiety can be daunting, but it can also be a powerful step towards them getting the help they need.” People having a tough time can contact trained mental health counsellors at the beyondblue Support Service via phone on 1300 22 4636 or via www.beyondblue.org.au/getsupport for online chat or email responses. CATCH of the Week
IMAGE: Brad O’Reily, Mark Brown, Ian Brown and Trevor Simpson from Canowindra Produce
Canowindra Produce Servicing our Local Farmers Canowindra Produce Co Pty Ltd is an Australian owned and operated company based in Canowindra and its surrounding districts. Canowindra Produce has been operating since the early 1930’s and is family owned and operated. Over the years Canowindra Produce has established strong ties with many grain growers and major participants within the Australian Grain Industry. This knowledge ensures that they have a good supply of quality hay and grain and provide the best possible service to local farmers and customers on every level. They provide farmers with seeds for planting and fertilizers along with free agronomic advice. It enables them to evolve with the farmer throughout the duration of their crop from sowing and growing to harvesting and marketing, and enables them to source the right type of products for your needs. Managing Director of Canowindra Produce, Ian Brown suggests getting in quick for your cropping and fertilizer needs while
the weather is good, “The autumn rains have come after the long hot dry summer months. The rains recorded were the most significant falls we have seen since last winter and have given confidence to the coming winter cropping season. If you have not secured your cropping seed and fertilizer requirements, we urge you to discuss your needs with us. Many varieties of seed are in limited stock and best to organize as soon as possible so you do not miss out on your chosen variety and have to alter you’re cropping plans at the last minute”. “There is also still time to get some top soil testing done for wheat crops, and getting a good understanding of how your paddocks fertility is prior sowing and tailor more specific fertilizer program for your chosen crop and paddock. Discuss your MAP/DAP needs with us so your supply is secured and avoid the worry of supply issues that have been seen the last few seasons” Ian said. By Jessica Jenkins

INSURANCE Tips Pet Insurance – A load of Rubbish?
IMAGE: The Debutante’s caking the ceremonial cake
Canowindra Debutante Ball 2014 The 44th Canowindra Debutante Ball was held last Saturday the 5th of April at the Canowindra Services Club Hall. In total there was 12 girls who were introduced into society as young ladies and graced the dance floor in their stunning white gowns alongside their Deb partners. The Debutantes danced to two songs played by Dearne Curtis and they all overcame their nerves and enjoyed themselves. The Debutantes were Madeline Troth & Rhys Maere, Sarah Clunes & Sam Townsend, Alicia Earsman & Jake Wythes, Emerald Gilson & Ebann Malae, Rachel Wynn & Blake Cramer, Brittany Wilson & Jayden Pender, Hayley White & Regan Hughes, Jennifer Holmes & Talby Upton, Katelin Felstead & David Mood, India Thurtell & Nick Perry, Brooke Said & Tinei Sauvao, Melana Pearce & Harry Whatman. They were greeted by the Guests
of Honour, Kath Balcombe and John Cowell and Flower girl Sarah Shady and Pageboy Will Pearce. There were approximately 270 guests and the MC of the night was Kathy Davis. On behalf of the organizers of the Debutante Ball, thank you to Bill Paul’s Carpet Centre for supplying the red carpet, Mandy Townsend for the beautiful teal coloured cake and the Canowindra Trading Post and Canowindra Services Club for their support. The entertainment of the night was the Band ‘Nuthin’ 2 Serious’ who really got the crowd going, in which some great dance moves were discovered. All the girls looked absolutely stunning and the boys scrubbed up all right as well. Overall the night was enjoyed by all. By Jessica Jenkins
Like most insurances out there until you need them you feel like you are paying for thin air. This is especially true with pet insurance which I thought was a load of rubbish (as do most pet owners: according to consumer group Choice, only 2 per cent of people insure their pets) until faced with the prospect of massive veterinary bills after our family dog decided to pick a fight with a king brown snake. If your dog is prone to illnesses or if your cat routinely gets into fights with other cats, pet insurance can take the stress out of expensive vet bills. Considering the high costs for complicated specialist treatments, pet insurance can offer value for money and give you peace of mind that you can afford the best treatment for your pet. Three Tips when buying pet insurance • First, read the policy properly – some insurance contracts may as well be written in Greek, so it pays to work out exactly what is included and excluded in your cover. Some insurers won’t pay out for pre-existing conditions, older pets, or even certain breeds. • Second, choose the highest excess you can confidently afford to pay in the event of a claim (like $500); this will lower your yearly premium. • Finally, only insure for events that can financially devastate you. Insurers are only too happy to sell you a high-priced all-inclusive type of cover that allows you to claim vet visits and a host of other extras – but you’ll pay through the paws for it. A lower-cost option is to get fully covered in the event of accident and illness, and pay for any other vet treatment such as immunisations out of your own pocket. So long as you buy the right policy, pet insurance like most insurance is a smart investment. By John Bowman Ausure Insurance Brokers

Easter Trading Hours Most locals are excited and looking forward to a well- deserved break for Easter. For those that are unsure, trading hours are listed below for some of our local shops over Good Friday, Easter and Anzac Day. • The 18th of April is Good Friday • The 20th of April is Easter Sunday (Happy Easter) • The 21st April is Easter Monday • The 25th of April is Anzac Day On Easter Sunday, Christians celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ after his crucifixion. The four-day Easter weekend marks the end of the summer season for many Australians. Easter Sunday is a very important day for Christians, since the resurrection of Christ reflects a central idea in Christianity. Many Christians attend special church services even if they do not attend services regularly during the rest of the year. For non-
religious people and followers of other faiths, the four-day Easter weekend is a welcome break and a chance to enjoy a range of sporting and cultural events, lots of chocolate and seafood! Many people also travel to visit family and friends and the roads can become very busy and occupied with stressed drivers trying to get from A to B. Remember these holidays to slow down and be careful on the roads, double demerits apply and remember to stop every 2 hours for a stretch. For those who are not travelling there are plenty of things to do, especially if you have children! Paint eggs, make your own chocolate eggs, do an Easter Hunt, revisit old board games, invite the girls around or host a get together with all your friends and family. We hope everyone has a safe and happy Easter! By Jessica Jenkins

IMAGE: Dr Peter Fox, Oncologist with Virginia, holding first prize in the raffle
Virginia Cullane Donates Books for Cancer Research Book collectors, book lovers and readers will all remember their visits to Canowindra over the past 15 years when they discovered the delights of a real old fashioned secondhand bookshop and book searcher. Virginia Cullane Books has been part of the historic streetscape of Canowindra during this time and kept many readers in the Central West and beyond, coming back again and again for their needs. Sixteen years ago, Virginia found she had breast cancer and had to spend 12 weeks in Sydney for treatment. This was very successful until November, 2013 when she discovered the cancer had returned in the form of liver and bone cancer. She is currently undergoing treatment in Orange. In order that some good may come of her problem for others, Virginia has arranged a huge book sale in Canowindra over the Easter period. All books have been donated
from Virginia’s huge reserves & from donations from others, far and wide. The sale will be held in the Old Canowindra Hardware store opposite Virginia’s Bookshop from 9am – 4pm, 14 to 21 April, 2014, excluding Good Friday. There will also be a raffle for 1st - an original painting, 2nd – a beautiful handmade quilt and 3rd – luncheon for four at Tommy’s Deli Lama, available at $2 per ticket. Please take a drive to Canowindra over the Easter Period to support Virginia’s efforts. All money raised is to go to Central West Clinical Trials for Breast & Prostate Cancer & therefore will stay in the local area, which is so underfunded for local research. Donations can be left at the bookshop or at Central Motors, three doors down in Gaskill St, Canowindra or any enquiries to 0428320559.

$3 Million for New Learning Facilities Young Central West students, including those in Canowindra, will be able to gain valuable skills in hospitality, metalwork and woodwork at new facilities now available at Red Bend Catholic College in Forbes. Courses funded by $3 million from the Capital Grants Program include metalwork, woodwork, and agriculture, with the establishment of an RBCC Hospitality Trade Training Centre offering Certificate I, II and III qualifications in hospitality. Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Education, Senator Scott Ryan, says the skills to be taught are currently in short supply in the community. “The new trade facilities include a commercial kitchen, teaching dining facility and highquality equipment,” he says. “The other new facilities will provide improved learning spaces and administration areas for the students and staff. This will be an environment conducive to enthusiastic, practical learning.” According to MP for Calare John Cobb, who officially opened the facilities: “The en-
tire college community came together in the spirit of cooperation. “They thought about our future needs, worked out what was best for the young people of the area, and devised a plan that makes a tangible difference.” The opening ceremony was attended by local dignitaries and the Catholic Bishop of Wilcannia-Forbes, the Most Reverend Michael Kennedy, who blessed the new buildings. “The federal government is concentrating on four main areas of reform,” says Senator Ryan. “Creating a more robust and balanced curriculum, improving teacher quality, increasing principal autonomy and better engaging parents in education. “The ultimate purpose of these reforms is to foster a smart, skilled Australian workforce so that our country can remain productive, competitive and admired around the world.” By Derek Maitland

Rugby League
Canowindra First Grade, Canowindra Vs. Trundle Canowindra put Trundle to the test and was an extremely tight game allowing Canowindra’s defence skills to shine. Trundle scored the first try in the first half of the game, making the half time score 6-0. In the second half of the game with half an hour remaining of the game, Canowindra had a great run in Trundle’s territory where Brydon Hughes was able to race his way through a gap and to score a try for Canowindra which was successfully converted by Jayden Brown, matching the scoreboard to 6 all. The intensity of this game was very high as Canowindra and Trundle were both going head to head. In the last 15 minutes of the game Trundle successfully converted a penalty kick, giving them the lead of 8-6. The Canowindra boys never gave in and kept Trundle out of the try line for the remaining time of the game. No other players scored, leaving the final score 8-6 giving Trundle a successful home ground win. Players Player was awarded to Blake Wilson for his consistency throughout the whole game.

The League Tag girls were very successful on Sunday the 6th of April as they ventured out to verse Gooloogong on their home grounds for the first time. This was Gooloogong League Tag’s first game in the competition, they were aware that versing Canowindra would be a difficult match as they were last season’s minor premiers and previous seasons winners. Gooloogong did not give in throughout the whole match as Canowindra were able to put 88 points on the scoreboard by the end of the game with Gooloogong unable to score. Congratulations to Tanika Wensley who was awarded Players Player for the day. Also great work to the girls who scored many tries in order to put the points on the board.
