PRINCIPAL’S REPORT Welcome to Term 3. We are in for a short but very busy term, with many positive events to come. The Cowra High P&C this year is extremely vibrant, with new members and an enthusiastic group of parents and staff coming along to meetings once a month. Unfortunately we have a very serious situation which places the viability of its existence at risk. Although the P&C currently has a Treasurer and a Secretary, we do not have a President. If we do not elect a President at the June meeting, the P&C will be required to disband. As a result the P&C run school canteen will also need to cease operation. If you can give a little of your time and are willing to directly contribute to your child’s school, please come along to the next meeting and nominate for the position of President. Your commitment will be greatly appreciated. Wednesday 7 May was the opening night of our school musical Reality, Exploration, Exploitation. Such events provide our Drama, Music & Dance students valuable performance experience whilst all involved have their education broadened in a highly positive way. I congratulate the students & staff who have given much of their own time to make this performance so successful. You will be in for a great night’s entertainment ~ so come along this evening and support our thespians.

COWRA SERVICES CLUB SCHOLARSHIP At a recent school assembly, Cowra Services Club Manager, Lloyd Garratt, presented a $1,000 scholarship cheque to Jessika Tarrant who was in Year 12 last year. This scholarship is awarded to assist a student with the costs of tertiary education. Jessika achieved an ATAR of 91.8 in the 2013 HSC and is now in her first year studying for a Bachelor of Medical Radiation Science at CSU Wagga. Cowra High and Jessika are extremely grateful to the Cowra Services Club for offering this generous scholarship.

Next Monday, will be our school Athletics Carnival ~ please encourage your students to participate in this event as those who get involved have a great time. Of course parents are always welcome to come down to Twigg Oval to support their children. The P&C will be running a canteen on the day ~ if you can spare an hour to help please contact the school or pop down to volunteer. On the first Wednesday of this term we conducted our annual ANZAC assembly. The feedback from the guests was extremely positive with all present commenting on the respectful behaviour of our students and the moving tone of the assembly. The RSL was also very appreciative of our involvement in the town’s 2014 ANZAC Day commemorations, with Brodie Hart and Brody Hannan proudly representing us at the official ceremony. Just a reminder that next week the NAPLAN literacy & numeracy testing will take place for Years 7 & 9. Have a great fortnight Charles Gauci

COWRA HIGH SCHOOL NEWSLETTER YEAR 7 POETRY READING

Ms Smith & Mrs Rice’s Year 7 English class finished last term off with a beautiful display of Poetry Booklets and a class reading of poems. We were lucky enough to have Ms Henry-Smith come in to see and hear all the excellent work the students have been working on this term. The students were able to come up with some fantastic poems and have really shown an understanding of all the different features poets may use when writing. Well done Year 7! Chloe Nash

PBL NEWS

BREAKAWAY PROGRAM

Congratulations to Maddison Brooks of Year 7 & Kaitlyn Sanford of Year 10 who were the winners of the two major prizes in the PBL draw held in the last week of Term 1. Kaitlyn won the $50 Visa card donated by Mr Embroidery, while Maddison won the $50 Canterbury clothing voucher donated by Bushman Boots & All. This was the second time in a month that Maddison had taken out a major prize in the PBL draw. The school greatly appreciates the generous financial support of PBL provided by Mr Embroidery and Bushman Boots & All. Students are encouraged to get their coloured Eagles into the barrel to have a chance of winning the various prizes on offer.

Cowra’s unique interagency Breakaway Program has entered its 12th year of operation with a group of six boys and nine girls from Years 9 & 10 beginning the program. They, along with a couple of students from Canowindra High will continue to be involved each Thursday for the next two terms. As in the past few years, a few nonIndigenous students have been invited to join Indigenous students who comprise the majority of the participants. Students and staff involved are now wearing their special Breakaway Program 2014 polo shirts and have already had a session where Aboriginal community members joined them to present information.



Last week, they travelled to Wentworth Falls in the Blue Mountains where they completed an arduous bush walk through the spectacular but steep environment which tested the group’s fitness. This was an Aboriginal cultural discovery walk led by two National Parks & Wildlife officers, one of whom was former Cowra resident David Newton. The surrounding bush was described as an Aboriginal supermarket and participants were introduced to plants as food, drink, medicine and even soap. Glowing reports have been received of the student’s excellent behaviour, interest and co-operation during this excursion throughout a very long day. Thank you to all who accompanied the group ~ Robyn Coffey & Rod Eastwood from Cowra High; Sue Willoughby & Tony Graham from TAFE; and Tim Waite from the PCYC.

NSW PUBLIC SCHOOLS ABORIGINAL DANCE COMPANY During the recent school holidays, Imajen James of Year 9 was invited back to Sydney to rehearse for two days with the NSW Public Schools Aboriginal Dance Company. This was very exciting for Imajen as the DEC Arts Unit arranged to fly her to and from Sydney ~ her first experience of being in a plane & negotiating Sydney’s domestic airport. Later this month, Imajen will perform with other company members at three separate major events in Sydney. She would like to thank Mrs McLean for driving her to Orange Airport and Miss McAlister for picking her up on her return.

WAGAMBIRRA DANCE GROUP NEWS

EQUESTRIAN NEWS

The biennial national Catapult Festival of Youth circus & physical theatre was officially opened with a spectacular and beautifully choreographed Aboriginal dance performance in Bathurst on Tuesday 8 April. 49 Aboriginal dancers from Cowra, Bathurst and the Blue Mountains came together via an Arts OutWest program to be part of the performance which took place at night on the banks of the Macquarie River, before a large audience. Dancers included eight girls and one boy from Cowra High along with others from Cowra Public & Mulyan Public. Prior to the performance the girls had completed three workshops with Jo Clancy while Jared Burns had worked with Steve Taylor. For some of our Year 7 dancers, this was their first public dance performance.

On Friday 2 May some of the Equestrian team members travelled to the Sydney international Equestrian Centre to watch the CDI International Dressage competition. This provided the students with the opportunity to watch some of the best equestrians in Australia performing some amazing manoeuvres with their horses.

During the recent school holidays the Aboriginal dancers also performed in Canowindra on Saturday evening April 26 as part of the entertainment prior to the Balloon Glow. Again the group comprised students from Cowra Public & Mulyan Public, along with eight from Cowra High. Special mention needs to be made of Jaylee Dunn of Year 8 who performed the Acknowledgement of Country in front of an audience of over 7,000 people as part of the official opening. Both performances resulted in many positive comments and praise from those in attendance. Congratulations to the students involved ~ Jared Burns, Jaylee Dunn, Bryana Field, Imajen James, Kiesha Williams, Darkhya Collett, Jessica Collett, Ashleigh Doolan, Jamaka Toomey, Monique Elbourne -Gordon, Jesse Murray & Tiarna Williams. Particular thanks to Mrs McLean who was our bus driver for all the performances. Cheryl McAlister Wagambirra Dance Group Co-ordinator

Part of the trip included a tour of the stables with our own personal guide who was actually one of the competitors. She was very knowledgeable introducing students to many competitors and giving us the chance to ask as many questions as we wanted. Our guide then spent time with the students talking them through the tests explaining training methods & movements. Students even managed to watch former student Megan Bryant compete and gain a second place. Carla Boland and Samantha Nicholson are pictured with Queensland rider Tor Van den Burg and his very big & impressive stallion just before his very difficult dressage test.  

TIME 4 KIDS Principal, Mr Gauci, and Year 12 students, Jessie McLean & Dylan Oliver, were ‘arrested’ at the end of last term as part of the PCYC’s Time 4 Kids fundraiser. They had volunteered, along with other community members, to be locked up outside Bushman Boots & All in the hope that others would contribute money to bail them out. Senior Constables Janine Robinson & Tim Waite from Cowra PCYC arrested the volunteers while they were at school, with Mr Gauci being escorted around the school in hand cuffs seeking donations from students and staff. The PCYC was happy to report that around $5,300 was raised which will be used to provide activities to support the youth in our community.

COWRA HIGH SCHOOL NEWSLETTER DENTAL CHECK UPS During Weeks 5 & 6 in Term 3, the Australian Mobile Dental Care will be rolling into Cowra High School with their dental truck. While here they will be offering students dental services such as check-ups, x-rays, fillings and extractions. This is a part of the Government funded program Grow up Smiling. This program allows for a total entitlement benefit capped at $1,000 per child over a two year period and payment is administered through Medicare using details held by Centrelink. It is means tested so there may be some students who are not eligible for this program. Your child will soon bring home a consent form to be completed if you would like them to participate in the Grow Up Smiling program. If you are interested in the program but are unsure if your child is eligible please complete the consent form and tick the box on the back ”I am not sure”, return this to the school and Australian Mobile Dental Care will check with Medicare on your behalf. If you have any further questions please contact Mrs Hambly at the school.  

VACCINATION CLINIC The second free vaccination clinic for 2014 has been organised for Friday 30 May. NSW Health nurses will be administering the second dose of the three dose course of Human Papillomavirus vaccine (HPV) to all Year 7 students (boys and girls) and Year 9 boys. Parents are asked to ensure that students requiring this vaccination are present at school on this day.  

CHS KNOCKOUT VOLLEYBALL Last Friday, Orange High played against Cowra High at our school. The girls played first and were able to defeat Orange in straight sets. Congratulations to our girls ~ Amy Edgar, Laura Cummings, Skye Lanham, Goldie Oliver, Bethany Shingles, Erin Bates, Kelsie Baratto, Ainslie Dunlop & Nidal Komi. The girls now progress to the next round of the knockout competition which will be played as a round robin in Bathurst on the 16 May. Our boys also played to their best ability but unfortunately Orange High has a stronger team, and they won in straight sets. Congratulations to our boys for giving their best efforts on the day, and best of luck next year.

Page 5 THE MILLENNIUM PORTAL At Cowra High School, we record information about your student on an electronic program called Millennium. This information includes attendance, assessment marks, reports, merits, classroom & playground incidents. Students can access much of this information through the Student Portal to monitor their progress. They also have access to the Daily Notices, their timetable and a student diary. This can be done anywhere with internet access. Parents can now have access to much of this information through the Parent Portal so that you too, can monitor student progress and keep up-to-date. All you need to do is pay your voluntary contribution and then register your email address with the school. For further information, please ring the school and talk to Miss Heilman.  CHS STATE SWIMMING At the end of last term Cowra High sent 11 swimmers to the annual CHS State Titles at the Sydney Olympic Aquatic Centre to represent both the school and the wider Western Region. These are a bunch of young people who have trained hard over the summer months and their commitment and enthusiasm is admirable. I would like to publicly acknowledge the dedication of the local coaches, Kerry Lewis, Di Browne, Jane Gillham & Pat Charnock. All swimmers did themselves, the school & the region proud. There were lots of personal bests and great positions. To make it this far and perform so well at the end of a long season is a superb effort. I’d like to make special mention of Lucy Wilson who once again made the final in the 100m breaststroke ~ well done Lucy. However, even topping this was the efforts of our 14yr girls relay team of Jade Browne, Jade Te Weehi, Georgia Lewis & Meg Downey who managed the fantastic achievement of coming 6th in the State. It was an emotional time at SOPAC, surrounded by parents and other students ~ we certainly raised the roof! Other swimmers were Lochie Wilson, Mat Dun, Paddy Ryan, Lucy Clements, Taniesha Kurtz & Bede Leyland. Sean Leyland

COWRA HIGH SCHOOL NEWSLETTER CAREERS NEWS

UAC NEWS ~ APRIL 2014 UAC is pleased to announce the introduction of a centralised Schools Recommendations Schemes (SRS) process for 2015 admissions onwards for current Year 12 students who are UAC applicants for undergraduate admission. The aim of SRS is to facilitate access to higher education for current Year 12 students, some of whom might otherwise not be offered a place. UAC have been asked to provide this centralised facility to simplify the process for students with one online application for the following institutions for 2015 admissions. The schools assessment process will also be online.  Australian National University  Charles Sturt University  Griffith University  La Trobe University  Macquarie University  Southern Cross University  University of Canberra  University of New England  University of Technology, Sydney  University of Western Sydney The centralised SRS provides a simple process for applicants and schools. Some institutions will retain their existing schemes for selected schools. Up until now, institutions administered direct applications for their schemes (sometimes called Principals’ Recommendation Schemes) which allowed Principals to recommend students from their school for an offer from that institution. Institutions had different application forms, processes, document requirements, associated procedures & dates. This meant that students seeking entry into more than one institution required multiple application forms, and schools recommending those students also had to manage many different forms & procedures. UAC will process applications for these institutions centrally, and they will have access to school assessments together with students’ non Year 12 academic achievements and extra-curricular accomplishments to enable them to assess SRS applications and make their early SRS offers. Institutions will of course implement their own policies about how they’ll consider SRS applications when they make SRS offers. These may include taking into account educational disadvantage; geographic location; and extra-curricular accomplishments.

SRS applications will open in early August and close at the end of September, in line with the on-time closing date for applications for admission. Institutions will make their early SRS offers through UAC. COWRA HIGH SCHOOL NEWSLETTER STUDY SKILLS TIP FOR MAY THINKING AHEAD Are you riding a rollercoaster at school? Rollercoaster study is where you stay up late doing last minute assignments, then you take it easy for a while and do very little, then panic again when something is due and have to spend huge amounts of time at the end completing the work. If you plan ahead and are prepared, you will find school much less stressful and more rewarding. Here are the top tips for thinking ahead:  Study Notes: If you know that you have a test at the end of each topic or exams approaching, then on the nights you do not have much homework start working on your study notes & summaries. File them in folders at home so they are ready to go when you need them.  Assignment: Always start the assignment the day it is given to you, even if it is just a little bit. Make sure you understand the requirements and if you don’t ask your teacher straight away the next day. Brainstorm the steps the first night and do a rough plan of when you will do each step.  Ask for Help Early: There is nothing more frustrating than a student who says I haven’t understood anything we did in the last 3 weeks. Ask for help as soon as you have a problem. Keep a list of questions for your teacher on a post-it in your textbook or sticky notes on your computer or a list in your phone. Don’t let problems or issues build up, ask for help early and often.  Think About Who You Sit Next To: Choose wisely who you will sit with in class. This can make a world of difference to your results. If you sit with someone where it is a productive relationship, you encourage and help each other to stay on task in the classroom. You will understand your work better and have less to do at home.  Consider Your Week: Plan ahead for busy times. If you know you have nights where you can’t do much work or a busy weekend, plan ahead and get things done early. Always look ahead for possible times where you could be caught short of time and make plans to avoid problems. Learn more this year about how to improve your results and be more efficient and effective with your schoolwork by working through the units on www.studyskillshandbook.com.au - our school’s access details are: Username: cowrahs Password: 174results COWRA COMMUNITY CINEMA
