Term 4 Week 7 29th November 2018 Dear Parents/Caregivers, This week two of our Year 4 students Haylie Ingram and Samantha Van Zyl represented Cowra Public School at the State NAIDOC Public Speaking competition in Dubbo. Haylie and Samantha reached the State level after placing first in both the Lachlan and Regional competitions held earlier in the year. The topic; “Because of her we can”, was also the theme of this year’s NAIDOC week celebrations and Haylie and Samantha once again, delivered their four-minute speech with great poise, enthusiasm and humour! Their flawless delivery received outstanding comments from the adjudicator and they were named the 2019 STATE Champions! Congratulations to Haylie and Samantha and also to their public speaking coaches Miss Katrina Noble and Miss Catherine Gorham, on a fantastic effort and result! A huge thank you must also go to Mr Dean Murray and his team for organising such a wonderful competition again this year. We were also very excited to receive the news this week, that Mr Albert Murray and Infants students Ava Gee, Mahalia Doolan and Maddon Booker were deserving winners at the Wudhagaragarra Awards held today in Dubbo. The Wudhagaragarra Awards are a celebration of the “Excellence in Indigenous Education” achievements by students, staff, parents and community. Mr Murray received the ‘Aboriginal Languages Award’ and Ava, Mahalia and Maddon each were awarded an ‘Encouragement Award’. We are very proud of Ava, Mahalia, Maddon and Mr Murray and congratulate them on this wonderful achievement. On Monday our Year 6 students had their full Transition Day at Cowra High School. I’m sure that the day was very beneficial and has enabled our Year 6’s to feel more confident about heading off to High School next year. Thank you to the staff at Cowra High School for their organisation of the day.

Kindergarten, Stage 1 and Stage 2 students had the pleasure of attending Cowra Ballet School’s production of “The Enchanted Tales of Belle” on Tuesday this week. Many of our CPS students performed in the production and those in the audience were blown away by the costumes, music and dancing on display! Congratulations to Miss Hayley Barker on directing an amazing production. A big thank you to Mrs Hopson for her organisation of the event and the P&C who subsidised part of the entry fee for our students to attend.
Infants: 9.30am Primary: 11.30am
All welcome to celebrate the wonderful achievements of our students
On Wednesday we held a special luncheon for all of our scripture teachers who generously donate their time every week to instruct our students. On behalf of the students and staff I would like to thank them for their continued support and wish them a very Merry Christmas. Our 2018 scripture lessons concluded this week with a special combined Infants and Primary performance. As part of our school’s annual evaluation we are required to assess aspects of our school policies and practices. This year we will be evaluating “Satisfaction” and “Mathematics”. Two surveys were sent home with last week’s Newsletter which we would appreciate you completing and returning to school by Friday 9th December. Alternatively they can be completed online at the following links, or simply click on the links posted on our School Facebook page: SATISFACTION SURVEY - https://goo.gl/forms/AP9yTGrXqan9USW52 MATHEMATICS SURVEY - https://goo.gl/forms/F05b005n7Dmc0flm1 Your child is asked to place any paper surveys in the collection box located in the Office, so that all surveys remain anonymous. Thank you in advance for your assistance. Tomorrow sees the end to our annual School Swimming Scheme. Students in Year 2 have been attending learn-to-swim lessons for the past two weeks and have made excellent improvements in their swimming ability and water confidence. I would like to say a huge thank you to Miss Amy Irvine, Mr Craig Jeffries, Mrs Catherine Gorham and Mrs Sheryl-Ann Pulling for their efforts in instructing our students in the water this year. Learning to swim is a vital life-saving skill and NSW Sport and Recreation are offering learn to swim classes for all ages from the 7th-17th January 2019 at the Cowra Aquatic Centre. Just go to the NSW Office of Sport and Recreation website to register. Tomorrow is our final whole school assembly for the year, starting at 11:30am in the Hall. We will organise for the back gate adjacent to the Coles Car Park to be open during recess, to enable easy access for families wishing to attend the assembly. Tomorrow’s assembly will have some additional awards and will include the announcement of our School Leaders and House Captains for 2019. Our leaders will be formally presented with their badges at our Presentation Day on Tuesday 18th December. Next Tuesday Mirri and Budyabudya students, along with Mrs Hopkins, Ms Kelly, Mrs Haskew, Mrs Craig and Mr Murray will head to Bathurst for their excursion – we hope they have a wonderful day participating in Ten-pin Bowling, sampling the delicious food at the Chinese Inn Restaurant for lunch and finishing off with a trip to the Dinosaur Park! Our Stage 3 students and teachers are also off on their three-day excursion to Canberra. Students have been looking forward to this excursion all year and are very keen to explore the sites and attractions in our nation’s capital. Mr Garlick, Mrs Skene, Miss Noble and Mrs Johnson are just as excited as the students and we hope they all have a wonderful time away! Just a reminder to all Stage 3 parents – the bus will be departing from the school at 7:30am sharp on Wednesday morning. Have a great week… Jenny Lewis Principal
