Many of our tutors have also been chief examiners so they know exactly what will be required from their students.

Everyone here is proactive, and know what they need to do in order to achieve their goals; with each and every person willing to put in every effort. The work experience the college provides is excellent. Throughout my AS year, I have shadowed healthcare professionals in many different settings—from clinics to hospitals. These experiences are truly inspiring. Together with the Healthcare Diploma organised by the college, I have reaffirmed my career choice.

The small to medium class sizes and intensive tuition mean that all students can benefit from personal attention. Where additional tuition is necessary, it is available on a one-to-one basis. This is one of many benefits provided by the college. We use exam-based teaching methods. Students receive regular topic specific examination practice in addition to sitting mock exams in January and April. By testing students regularly on their previous work, we not only ensure their full understanding of their subjects but build their confidence for the final exams. We place great emphasis on the successful time management of our courses; allowing mocks to be undertaken at the end of the course before examinations. A highly organised teaching programme, underpinned by regular written homework and timed tests, should lead to a successful outcome, given 100% commitment, attendance and punctuality on the part of the student. We ensure study techniques are fully integrated into all teaching and these include: study skills, revision, testing, note taking, critical thinking, speed reading, memory skills and time management.

A-level Overview

CHOOSE

One of the great advantages of the British educational system is that it provides students with the opportunity to specialise in the subjects of their choice at AS and A Level.

the right programme

UK universities recognise that A levels provide the depth of study required for UK degree courses. In many other countries, students have to go through a prolonged general education, and can only specialise when they go to university. A Levels enable students to experience the intellectual challenge and stimulation of studying subjects in much greater depth before they go to university. The A Level system works best when students have a wide range of subjects to choose from. Too many schools and colleges still require students to choose from columns of subjects to suit the timetable's requirements rather than the student's interests. At Cardiff Sixth Form College there is an interesting selection of subjects which can be taken in any combination and tailored to fit the student’s individual needs.

At CSFC we are fortunate to have some of the best and most experienced teachers, across all subjects. We believe that teachers play an integral part in ensuring our students’ academic successes. Our teachers are involved in both classroom teaching and mentoring one-to-one sessions with students. Prior to joining CSFC a number of our teachers have had more than 15 years teaching experience, and have held various positions, such as Head of Department, Head of Sixth Form, and, most importantly for us, the experience of being an examiner. CSFC has a well resourced computer suite and library which may be easily accessed by all students. Parents and guardians will receive student reports twice yearly and parents/teachers meetings are held at least once an academic year. Outside of these, appointments can be made for parents to discuss any concerns that they may have. Parents/guardians will have the ability to access and monitor their child’s progress throughout the year via our online monitoring system. This will include termly reports, live upto-date attendance and many other features.

Business Studies Examination Board – WJEC What Will I Study? The specification focuses on different types of organisations in various business sectors and environments and recognises that they face varying degrees of competition. These organisations include those that are: large and small; local, regional, national and multi-national, and operate for-profit and not-for-profit. Candidates should be aware of the threats, constraints and opportunities arising from membership of the European Union and the global economy, and the need for businesses to adopt a moral/ethical stance in their decision-making and a responsible attitude towards the physical environment.

What Next? Business Studies is a popular subject and can be effectively combined with most other subjects including IT, Languages, Social Sciences and Sciences.

What Will I Study?

What Will I Study?

Chemistry is the underpinning science in society. It plays a part in every aspect of our lives from medicines we use to keep healthy to the fertilizers we use on the land to maximize crop yield.

English language and literature is a subject that requires students to identify and consider the ways attitudes and values are created and conveyed in speech and writing. The focus of study will be the interpretation of writing and spoken language, to include poetry, prose and drama as well as a range of non-literary texts. There will also be opportunities for original writing. The literature side is dedicated to poetry and prose in the first year and drama in the second. Possible texts include a poetry anthology and Shakespeare alongside contemporary authors and dramatists. You will acquire a sophisticated knowledge of language frameworks and the manner in which they create meaning via purpose, audience and context across a range of genres.

What Next? As well as the classic combination with Physics, Biology and Mathematics, most subjects can be successfully studied alongside Chemistry. This is because Chemistry is a subject in which many key skills are developed. Such skills are essential to any future career. For those wishing to pursue a career in Medicine, Veterinary Sciences and many other scientific careers, Chemistry is a must. Additionally many chemists find careers in marketing and sales, journalism, advertising and law. The range of careers open to chemists confirms the high regard in which someone with such an allround set of skills is held.

What Next? A level English is a pivotal subject which means that most subjects go well with it. Therefore many careers are open to English students both male and female. However the most obvious professions are law, journalism, teaching, administration, civil services, banking and the media.

Economics is a popular subject and can be effectively combined with most other subjects including Social Sciences, Mathematics and Sciences. The full advanced level in Economics provides the basis for students who wish to proceed to higher education to study law, business management, marketing, accountancy, finance and banking. Large sections of the private and public sector recruit from this area.

Subjects Taken:

The A2 year comprises studies into other themes including Extreme Events and Weather Hazards, Global Economic Change and Development, as well as a synoptic paper based on the topics of Water Supply, Food, Energy and World Cities. The A2 students also complete another personal investigation on a choice of topics set by the exam board. In both years, there are two end-of-year written examinations – the emphasis for AS is on short, structured answers, whilst for A2, students write longer answers in an essay-format.

Geography is a very popular subject at university, especially as it can be studied at degree level either as an Art or as a Science, besides combined courses with other Humanities-based subjects. The study of Geography helps to develop a number of skills which employees are always seeking, including numeracy, literacy, problem-solving, IT skills, team-working, and time management, as well as the ability to present cogent and wellbalanced arguments in either a verbal or written format. The popularity of the subject also stems from the way the Geography syllabus covers a number of contemporary issues, besides allowing students, through the personal investigation, to explore in more detail the topics which interest them.

The course covers many of the seminal problems in Philosophy such as, the existence of God, political legitimacy, freewill, reason and experience, theories of virtue. Texts such as those of philosophers ranging from Plato to Nietzsche are covered; including Descartes, Mill and Hume among others.

There are various branches of Psychology and during the course you will study key pieces of research and topics from a range of these areas (e.g. individual differences, developmental psychology). You will also look at one area of applied Psychology where the practical implications of the subject are studied (e.g. health psychology).

Government and Politics

IELTS

Examination Board – WJEC

The IELTS course at Cardiff Sixth Form College takes a communicative-based approach and is very much learnercentred, whereby students are expected to take responsibility for their own learning. The course revolves around the teaching of topic-based materials with exam practice input. Peer assessment as well as teacher feedback is provided. There is a particular focus on IELTS Writing and Speaking in class. Sample and model answers to Writing Task 1 and Task 2 and the performance of candidates in Speaking are analysed. Prior to taking the exam, each student receives a mock interview with detailed teacher feedback provided. Apart from practice in each of the four papers, much attention is also given to student acquisition of a wider lexical resource and more complex grammatical structures.

What Will I Study? The AS Level course is the study of the government and politics of Wales and the UK. There is emphasis on how the systems work in both Westminster and Cardiff Bay – how are laws passed? How do we elect our representatives? What are the rules by which the country is governed? How can ordinary citizens participate in politics? There is also emphasis on issues – where does power really lie? Are Prime Ministers too powerful? Do coalitions work? Are pressure groups democratic? Do political parties matter? There is the chance to visit the Senedd and the Houses of Parliament. The AS level examination is two exams. Candidates will answer two questions, from a choice of four, on each exam. The A2 course focuses on the government and politics of the United States of America. Again, the mechanics of the system is studied, as well as the issues. The Constitution stands at the centre of the American system. We consider how relevant a 200-year old document can be to the government of a 21st century Super-Power, and whether the checks and balances operate efficiently in the relationships between the President, Congress and the Supreme Court. The A2 is two exams. Candidates will answer two questions, from a choice of four, on each exam.

What Next? Government and Politics is almost an essential course of study for active and informed citizenship. The skills it develops are compatible with many other A-level subjects: writing convincing explanations, selecting relevant facts to make a case, analysing and evaluating arguments, reaching and supporting judgements. The subject will open doors into almost any career area, and is especially relevant to careers in journalism, the law, education, local and national government and public administration, public relations, business management etc.

History Examination Board – WJEC What Will I Study? The subjects covered in the Period Study are “Aspects of the History of Wales and England c. 1780 – 1886”. Students will be required to consider the process of historical change and its causes, consequences and significance. At AS they are: Politics and government in Wales and England, c.1780-1832, Economic and social change and popular protest, c1815-1848, Foreign policy, c.1793-1841. At A2 they are: The Conservatives in the age of Peel and Disrali, 1834 – 1880, the development of Liberalism, 1846-1886.

What Next? The full Advanced Level in History provides the basis for students who wish to proceed to higher education to study a wide range of degrees. It combines well with all other A Level subjects.

16

Whilst students already possess a good level of English on entry to the college, the aim of the IELTS course is to enable them to achieve at least a band 7 in each of the four papers. To perform well in the exam, the following are some of the important skills needed. Writing Task 1: summarise the information given effectively; make relevant comparisons; provide a clear overview; clearly present key features. Writing Task 2: address all parts of the task sufficiently; present a well-developed answer to the question with relevant, extended and supported ideas; develop a clear position in response to the question/s. Speaking: speak fluently with only occasional repetition or self-correction; develop topics coherently and relevantly; employ a flexible range of connectives and discourse markers. Reading: employ effective strategies appropriate for a particular task; understand the requirements of each question type (e.g. paragraph headings, summary completion and multiple choice).

Mathematics Further Mathematics Examination Board – WJEC What Will I Study? The emphasis of the course is on using and applying Maths and taking responsibility for their learning. The AS specification has been selected to develop abilities to reason logically and to understand the relationship between ‘real world’ problems and mathematical models. The A2 specification extends students’ range of mathematical skills and techniques and uses them in more difficult unstructured problems. Students will develop an awareness of the relevance of maths to other fields of study, to the world of work and to society in general.

What Next? Maths provides a useful route into many careers. The ability to think logically and be able to solve problems is highly valued in the work place. Maths is now a requirement for a number of university courses and is also an advantage for many subjects: Actuarial Work and Insurance, Economics and Business, Management, Finance, Accountancy, Computer Science and ICT, Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Genetics, Engineering and Physics, Social Sciences and Law. Please Note: Some students may take Double Mathematics where they complete the whole of A Level Maths in the first year, having twice the usual amount of lessons. AS/A2 Further Maths is then taken in the second year provided you have achieved a B grade at A Level Maths. It contains six modules (Three of which are taken in January and three in June). All modules are all equally weighted and chosen from the following areas: Further Pure Maths, Mechanics and Statistics.

While you should choose subjects you enjoy and are good at, we recommend the following choices in preparation for specific degree areas:

• Students applying to read Healthcare also have weekly meetings where they give talks on topical issues in Healthcare and discuss university interviews.

For Scientists and Engineers Four subjects chosen from Maths, Further Maths, Physics, Chemistry and Biology. For Business, Humanities and Law students Four subjects chosen from Maths, Further Maths, Economics, History, English Literature, Psychology, Business Studies, Geography, Chemistry, Biology and Physics, Modern Language and Government and Politics. Cambridge Pre-U Diploma This course allows students to explore issues that are relevant to their lives and studies, through in-depth research and advanced study skills. The growing popularity of self directed learning at university level makes the ability to think across subject boundaries and to build a portfolio of research, essential. CSFC believes that success in this qualification provides not only an accurate assessment of a student’s ability to learn and study, but offers the opportunity to look in depth at topical and fascinating issues. Critical Thinking/Philosophy Course This is a general course in which students are introduced to some fundamental questions in the subject: How do we acquire knowledge? Is some knowledge innate? How is the body related to the mind? Understanding the nature of virtue – the possibility of altruism and a number of moral theories are examined. Ethical dilemmas are discussed. Throughout, thinking skills will be developed by looking closely at the arguments mustered for the various philosophical positions discussed. Critical thinking which is essentially part of logic examines how effective an argument is, how to detect flaws in it (mainly through textual examples) while examining the assumptions which underlie it. Although this course is itself not examined it is a useful precursor to tests such as, BMAT, LNAT and TSA which are increasingly important as part of the entry requirements of most universities. Besides, being able to think clearly is a sine qua non of a whole range of university degree courses.

• University Application Guidance – Students are supported through each stage of the application process, from selecting universities to mock interview sessions.

“e weekly BmAT sessions were very helpful in preparing me for the essay section of the paper. We had discussions about ethical and philosophical issues, and the numerous essay practices made me more confident in tackling the BmAT paper.” Samantha Chan from Singapore studying Medicine at Cambridge University

BMAT “The lessons provided by the school were very helpful especially in the aptitude and skills department. The debates and discussions on various topics both scientific and general broadened my perspective all of which gave me confidence as well as concise arguments for the writing task. Merely attending the classes will not guarantee you an amazing score, it is the hard work, dedication and time you put into the lessons and indeed into your independent study that is the determining factor.” Kamogelo Banyou Thutoetsile from Botswana studying Medicine at Cambridge.

Specialist preparation

University Preparation

Preparation for Oxbridge entry Students of exceptional academic ability, may consider applying to the University of Oxford or Cambridge. These institutions are some of the most competitive in the world and to give you the best chance, we will provide you with the following specialist preparation:

The college supports students in a number ways in their preparation for University studies. One area of particular importance is the provision of meaningful work experience; another is interview practice which is organised both inhouse as well as inviting Admissions Tutors to conduct them. Time-tabled lessons provide help with tests which are part of the entry process for some University courses, such as, BMAT, TSA, LNAT, STEP and guidance is given for UKCAT.

• Regular formal discussions about current affairs, news and events to develop cultural awareness and communication skills. • Continuous assessment of work progress in homework, tests and examinations to maintain required standard. • Involvement in competitions such as Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics and Biology Olympiads. • Regular work experience placements arranged by the college both locally and abroad. • Preparation for university face-to-face interviews, which includes the opportunity to discuss interview techniques and meet former CSFC students now at Oxford or Cambridge. This includes on-going support from former CSFC students at both Universities. • Additional classes in Maths, Economics and Physics for students applying for these subjects and who have to take STEP (Sixth Term Examination Paper), the AEA (Advanced Extension Award) plus other aptitude exams related to the above degrees, including Oxford and Cambridge entrance exams. • Additional Classes/Course for University Aptitude ExamsUKCAT, BMAT, LNAT, TSA, ELAT.

An IELTS specialist as well as experienced English teachers ensure that students are properly prepared for the language entrance requirements for top Universities in particular for overseas students. Understanding the precise requirements for each component of the IELTS test is critical to success. In addition, a Study Skills/Academic English course is provided with the specific aim of giving students the kind of skills that they will need for University study – such as, effective reading, note-taking, expressing their own ideas and opinions and structuring essays. Increasingly, Universities are looking for students who not only have absorbed knowledge but who can think for themselves. The Cambridge Pre-U course which can be taken over one year (the Short course) or over two years is a useful preparation for taking the step up to a more independent form of learning. All students may take this course in which they are exposed to some critical thinking concepts and applications which are at the heart of the Pre-U course. Thus, they learn to be able to detect flaws in reasoning, question common assumptions and recognise common logical fallacies.

Work Experience Placements

philosophy meetings have truly been an intellectually stimulating activity that i have looked forward to every single week. engaging and thought-provoking, philosophy is great fun and has definitely helped develop how i view myself, other individuals, society, and the rest of the world in general. if you enjoy thinking about just about anything (along with having a good debate once in a while), i would definitely encourage you to do philosophy! Zen Foo from Malaysia studying Economics and Philosophy at London School of Economics. 20

Aware of the importance to students of having an interesting portfolio of work experience when applying to University, CSFC has a designated member of staff to oversee student work placements. These are provided in a wide variety of contexts; Hospitals, GP Surgeries, Pharmacies, Opticians, Dental Surgeries, Veterinary Clinics and Care Homes for those interested in medical-related fields. There are places with law firms, financial institutions, insurance companies and banks for those students interested in legal or financial matters. We are also able to arrange placements in Engineering companies. Feedback from the student and the provider of the placement is important to ensure that expectations on both sides are being met and whether the students are being appropriately placed. On the whole students as well as employers get a lot out of the experience. For many students it will be their first introduction to the world of work. They need to be aware of their appearance, punctuality, and their manner of dealing with others – to be successful they should be eager to work as directed and to get involved. The student may find that his/her chosen career is not at all what they expected or alternatively it may confirm that their chosen path is indeed the right one. In either case this will be a valuable experience.

What the Host Organisations say: Rhondda Cynon Taff Council:

“please, please, please if you have any more students like mompati please send them here for their work experience. he is an exceptional young man who will succeed – he has a thirst for knowledge and a keen awareness of what he needs to do and learn to ensure success. i wish him the best.” Western Vale Day Centre

“e placement went really well. Tommy fitted in with the team and the clients. According to my girls, he was an absolute pleasure to work with.” Barclays Direct Mortgages

“maxine has settled in really well and seems to be enjoying her work experience. she is a delightful student and we are very happy with her.”

What the Students say: “it reinforced my aspirations and passion for engineering as it portrayed engineers as the link between people’s dreams of having magnificent buildings and the construction of such structures.” (Mompati Seete)

“e work experience has encouraged me to further pursue medicine at University as it provided me with an insight into the world of medicine and showed me what i could do in the future.” (Paivyn Lee) “Work experience helps you to decide whether the career is suitable for you, i can also use the experience in my personal statement.” (Wilson Wong)

“my five day placement at cardiff University’s school of medicine was by far my most enjoyable one yet. roughout the week i joined various doctors, researchers and ph.d. students as they introduced me to the intriguing world of scientific research; from protein crystallography and immunohistochemistry, to dnA electrophoresis. ese people were not afraid to provide us with some hands on experience, handling equipment and chemicals in labs only few were allowed to enter. e experts were quirky, knowledgeable and unbelievably passionate about their research, which made the experience ever more enjoyable. i would definitely recommend this programme to anyone interested or curious about the world of scientific research. scientific research is definitely not an old man with grey hair and a moustache hunched in a corner of the lab mixing chemicals all day.” (Nicholas Oon)

LOTS OF LIFE

outside of the classroom Life at CSFC may begin in the classroom but it by no means ends there. With a wide-range of competitions, trips, events, clubs and activities to take part in, there is rarely a dull moment. Some of the activities exercise the brain cells while with others it’s more the body and the muscles. Biology and Chemistry Olympiads, Physics and Maths challenges test knowledge and understanding. Educational trips to CERN, NASA and the Crown Court have an academic focus. These activities are referred to as ‘formal’ in the Prospectus for ease of reference. While many trips, e.g. to Bath, Stratford-upon – Avon, Blenheim Palace, Cardiff Castle and St Fagan’s may increase students’ cultural awareness and sense of history, fundamentally, they are meant to be enjoyable and recreational. The numerous sporting activities and trips too are just for fun; to relax and forget about learning and examinations for a while.

Competitions (Formal) Students from Cardiff Sixth Form College enjoy a challenge – challenging others and themselves. They participate in a range of competitions such as, Maths Challenge, Physics Challenge, Chemistry Olympiad, Biology Olympiad and Debating competitions. They have been awarded all classes of certificates in these competitions, gold, silver and bronze. In ‘Debating Matters’ competition the CSFC team reached the UK regional final in London, this year. In each of these competitions, students are motivated to learn more, become enthusiastic about the subject, and increase their confidence and communication skills.

Biology UK Olympiad

“e Biology UK Olympiad recognises cardiff sixth Form college as e Best school in Wales in terms of performance in the competition.”

With many students at CSFC interested in studying Medicine, and other Healthcare professions, Biology is a very popular subject. Each year there is a lot of interest in the UK Biology Olympiad. This is a challenge which stimulates gifted students with an interest in Biology to expand and extend their talents. One of the aims of the challenge is to encourage able students to pursue the study of Biology at University. This year CSFC had two gold medals, Samantha Chan, Martin Mak, one silver, Dylan Tan, and several bronze medals, high commendations, and commendations. Samantha has secured a place in the prestigious British Biology Olympiad finals held at the University of Reading. Making the last sixteen in a field which started with four thousand two hundred, is quite an achievement. This final hurdle is to select the team to represent the UK in the International Biology Olympiad to be held in Switzerland. CSFC emerged as the best school in Wales in terms of performance in the competition.

Chemistry Olympiad Each year the Royal Society of Chemistry organises the selection of the UK team for this exciting event. Successful students go on to take part in the international final which this year will be held in Russia. The International Olympiad offers a fantastic opportunity to travel and meet fellow Chemistry enthusiasts from around the world. The selection process is open to all post-16 students and we encourage entries from both AS and A2 students. It opens with Round 1 - a challenging written test of chemistry knowledge. Gold, silver and bronze certificates are awarded. At the 45th International UK round 1 CSFC came away with a large haul of awards; 2 Gold, (Samantha Chan, Anh Thi Thu Nguyen) and a large number of silver (13) and Bronze (42) awards. The questions posed in Round 1 often stimulate lively debate and enthusiasm for Chemistry – raising awareness of what the subject is all about. It provides a useful opportunity to develop some of the skills required for study at University.

philosophy society was excellent. it was a great opportunity to get away from the rigid curriculum and talk about the philosophical issues that we were thinking or reading about that week. i'm certain socrates would approve. Jamie Coombes from Wales A-Level Grades: A*, A*, A*, A*

DUKE of edinburgh A Duke of Edinburgh programme is a real adventure from beginning to end. You achieve an Award (Gold/Silver/Bronze) by completing a personal programme of activities in four sections.

Debate Students enjoy the cut and thrust of debate and everyone has some exposure to it in class at the start of the year. Some really take to it and like doing the research on the topic, deciding how to order the points they want to make and presenting the argument. Often the debate spills over from lesson time to students’ free time or mealtimes. This year with an excellent team – CSFC has come through three rounds to reach the regional finals representing the West and South Wales in London. It has proved an excellent vehicle for developing the students’ confidence, powers of argument and persuasion.

Trips (Formal) CSFC organises a variety of trips which help to enrich and deepen students’ understanding. Last year the Head of Physics Dr Jenkins took a group of students to CERN, the International Centre for Nuclear Research, near Geneva. It provided the opportunity for students to listen to lectures by scientists at the cutting edge of their respective fields and ask questions. It allowed them see the large Hadron Collider, gain an insight into the ground-breaking work they are doing, their methods of data collection and its contribution to theoretical physics. Few could fail to be enthused by the exciting experiments that are being undertaken. Our Psychology Tutor, Mrs Beynon, arranges a visit to the Crown Court where students have a chance to see the British justice system in action. They can get a sense of how part of the legal system works – of obvious interest to future law students – and observe the formality, protocol and theatrical elements, which are of interest to social psychology students.

Activities & Clubs – Teacher-led There is a great variety of activities which students have enjoyed and where there has been a competitive element, have been successful. Some of these activities will help develop your confidence, some will help you think more clearly and communicate better, while all of them will be useful in University applications. The following list is not exhaustive: Welsh Debating Championships, Debating Matters, Model United Nations, European Youth Parliament, Elocution, NASA, BASEHEAT, Young Enterprise, DoE, Philosophy, Art/Architecture, Medical Society, Healthcare and Academic Diploma.

To: University of Cambridge Studying: Economics Comments: When I arrived at this college I arrived with high expectations. After all, I was coming to the best A level college in the UK. However, Cardiff Sixth Form College has surpassed all my expectations, and then some. Right from the time I arrived we were made to feel at home. Being a boarder from overseas, special care is taken to ensure that we get everything we need to feel at home. From housing that is better than I have seen in any other school, to food prepared by a professional chef, we basically have it all here. All of this is without even dwelling upon the academics. Almost all our teachers have past experience as examiners and ensure we get all the help we could need, no matter when it is or what it is about. Along with the teaching, the admin staff are always cheerful, and will never turn down an opportunity to help; the student welfare care is unparalleled. We have access to state of the art facilities, containing everything one could possibly think of, from indoor tennis courts to a comprehensive weights section! We also have the opportunity to participate in a seemingly endless stream of competitions, each helping us improve a particular skill to help us become all round top achievers.

These sections are: • Volunteering – helping someone, your community or the environment. • Physical – becoming fitter through sport, dance or fitness activities. • Skills – developing existing talents or trying something new. • Expedition – planning, training for and completing an adventurous journey through places such as Black Mountains, Wales. • Residential (Gold only) – staying and working away from home as part of a team, arranged locally or abroad.

my advice to students – take every opportunity that is given to you, dive in with both feet and you will have a fantastic time. Alexander Nicholas Craddock Grades in upper case represent the full A-level Grade. Grades in lower case represent AS Grade.

Comments: Having attended both a state school and CSFC the differences between them is very clear. At the college I have been academically stretched which has helped me in my studies. The teaching style is excellent as it allows for topics to be covered in a lot of depth and breadth. The college has also some fantastic opportunities outside the classroom, with links to the Goodwill Ambassador Programme and NASA. In addition, there is a fantastic social side to the college. My advice to students – take every opportunity that is given to you, dive in with both feet and you will have a fantastic time, and with a little hard work you can end up at your first choice of university!

GOODWILL Ambassador programme Shadowing doctors in Malaysia.

For over 6 years our Goodwill Ambassador Programme has provided an exceptional balance of academic studies and extra-curricular activities.

Students have the opportunity to experience international exposure to their chosen career with placements arranged in a variety of careers, ranging from medicine and veterinary science to engineering, finance and law. CSFC runs two programmes: the first to South East Asia (Malaysia), which lasts 14 days, and the second to the Middle East (Bahrain), which lasts 7 days. These programmes combine problem based learning, lectures at a local university, cultural exchange at a local school, training through simulated and real-life situations at various work placements; including operating theatres, laboratories and multi-national firms. The student’s experience is enhanced further through excursions, including visits to world heritage sites. Students who choose to go to Malaysia will enjoy island touring, visits to Orangutan Wildlife sites, and shopping at the Famous Petronas Twin Towers in Kuala Lumpur. Students who choose to go to Bahrain will enjoy Go-Karting, trips to the beautiful beaches at the Al Dar Islands, and cool off at The Lost Paradise of Dilmun Water Park. While participating in all the above students are contributing in the local community by teaching English at a local orphanage. It is our belief that raising awareness of cultural issues and broadening the horizons of students in full-time education should be a priority. Through the range of activities that take place, students are provided with with a unique cultural exchange experience, and the opportunity to build genuine friendships in the local communities.

extra-curricular activities also play a major part of the learning process at csFc. As part of the Goodwill Ambassador programme, we went to the international hospital of Bahrain. exists within the four walls of our building: personal hard work and self-motivation to achieve where you want to be. Even though it is the norm here to excel in everything that we do, we definitely would not have been able to muster the determination to push on without the continuous support from our dedicated teachers.

Each year our students join teams from selected schools all across the world to compete in the final of the competition held in NASA where they form teams/companies with other schools and are required to put forward proposals for a specified problem. The competition requires a lot of intensive work and involves long hours of discussion, planning and evaluating each other’s ideas in a competitive setting. At the end, each company gives a formal presentation to an audience of approximately 1000. The audience is made up of peers, post graduate students and internationally renowned scientists employed at NASA.

I feel that of all schools, this school prepares us for the high expectations that university life, and ultimately the rest of the competitive world, will demand from us. CSFC’s zero-tolerance policy may seem harsh to some, but in my opinion, it disciplines us not to take the world for granted, and to take responsibility for our own actions. I feel that I am being provided with invaluable tools that I will need in order to survive the competitive world that awaits me. Grades in upper case represent the full A-level Grade. The college is confident that participation in this type of programme allows students to push themselves academically while adding a global perspective to their work experience portfolios.

10 of us from cardiff sixth Form college put ourselves in the shoes of experts at nAsA as we travelled to houston to compete in the international space settlement design competition. We were put in a company consisting of more than 40 people from Australia, romania and America and together we were tasked with building a settlement floating in the clouds above venus. We were competing against three other companies also consisting of members from all the corners of the world as we began this two day task. e team was split into five different departments: structure, automations, operations, human factors and business development and finance. each department had its own role and tasks that it had to complete. Finally, after almost 44 hours of non-stop work, with only a few winks of sleep in between, we had to submit a

50 slide presentation of a comprehensive design for this settlement. Following that came the presentations and the judges left to deliberate, during which time we visited the Johnson space centre, the home of the infamous mission control as well as multiple space shuttles. it was then finally time for the results. After much nervous waiting, it was finally announced that our team had won. it was a moment of pure elation! All that work had finally paid off and we had beaten people from all over the world! it was an unbelievably proud moment for all of us to win such a prestigious international competition. looking back at the competition i can confidently say it was one of the best weeks of my life and the memories and experiences i took from it will be utilized and cherished for a long time to come. WEEKEND

Activities

At the beginning of the academic year students join clubs of their choice. If what you are most interested in is not catered for by any existing club, why not create one of your own and attract members? (For a non-exhaustive list, see below). Should you need more information about a club or about setting one up, see the Head boys or Head girls. It may be a sport, something musical or artistic, or it may be discussion-based, or subject focused. The range of possibilities is virtually endless (for a sample see below). It is an opportunity to practise something you really want to do. Weekends become a time for the activities you want to participate in.

Clubs and Societies (Student-run) Many of our clubs and societies are run by students e.g. the Photographic Society, Film Club, Art Club, PPE Discussion Group, Law Society and Dance club. Besides there is a range of sports clubs, such as, Tennis, Badminton and football which are being developed as the school expands. Students are encouraged to get involved as it enables them to cultivate their talents, share them with others and socialise in an enjoyable and beneficial way.

Glee Club (Miss Lal (Head of Mathematics) takes this club) Once a week, for an hour, the Glee club get together for some singing and acting! We aim • • • •

To bring together those with a passion for the arts To increase confidence and performance skills To enhance and showcase the talent of the students To make new friends and give AS and A2 students an opportunity to interact • To have fun The students have input into which songs are performed, and being in the Glee Club is a good way to release stress and pent up creativity! The Glee Club perform at the Annual Cultural event, and also put on a light-hearted comedy play at the end of the year! Trips to watch shows at local theatres, will also be arranged.

Music Room The college has a small Music Room comprising a piano, keyboards, drums and a range of stringed instruments. It provides a place where students can meet, practise and make music together. The intention for the future is to develop this facility according to demand.

Existing Clubs

Trips (Informal)

(September 2013): Latin Dance, Hip Hop, Modern Dance, Photography, Medical Society, Biology Society, Fundraising Events, Debate, Cycling Basketball, Swimming, Tennis Netball/Captain ball, Athletics and Fitness, Badminton, running Club, Mock Trials/Law society, Mind games, Economics, Maths and Physics Society, Oratory Club, Guitar Club, Computer Games, Christian Society Cookery Club, Newsroom, TED, Football, Rubik Cube.

Much of British history and culture may be new to our students. It is important that they get at least a flavour of iconic figures and places of cultural and historical interest from the past. Mrs Clements our English Tutor organises many of these, for example to Stratford-upon-Avon, to see Shakespeare’s birth-place, to Blenheim Palace where Churchill grew up, and to Bath to get an insight into Britain’s Roman past. The Biology Department organises a trip to Bristol zoo. More locally, there is a visit to St Fagan’s, a cultural and heritage Museum, and Cardiff Castle which is a very short distance away. Both of which help students understand a little of Welsh history and culture and are also a recreational break from the routine.

There is an expectation for all students here to perform well academically – taking part in non-academic pursuits is a good way of getting rid of stress and staying healthy. There are also some clubs which are teacher led such as the Glee Club inspired by the successful American TV series.

30

A Teacher’s View several visits are organised throughout the year, not only to enhance students, understanding of British history and culture but also to provide an enjoyable day out. One such visit was to stratford the birthplace of William shakespeare. Before entering stratford we stopped at the farm where his mother, mary Arden, lived before she married. here students were able to tour the farmhouse she once lived in, asking questions to the guides who were all dressed in period costume. e falconer with his numerous birds of prey attracted the students’ attention here; certainly all the cameras started clicking! in stratford itself we visited the birthplace of shakespeare before having free time to explore the town, with its interesting old houses and shops; we walked along the river bank and watched the canal boats going through the locks. Another visit was to Bath where students were able to tour the famous roman Baths before they explored the town with its interesting side streets and lanes. e roman Baths are a World heritage site that attracts visitors from all over the world. students always enjoy the variety of restaurants here. On our last visit one pupil impressively undertook the role of translator at the tourist information centre, for a couple from china who had very little english. We all congratulated him on his helpfulness and good manners, much to his embarrassment. st Fagans, the outdoor museum of Welsh folk life is always a popular outing as students wander through the country lanes, entering the many buildings from all over Wales that have been reconstructed there. e manor house is always a favourite as well as well as the farm where there are usually piglets and ducks to be seen. Cardiff Sixth Form College’s policy is to assess and monitor students health and well-being whilst at the college. Cardiff Sixth Form College students have access to an onsite General Practitioner (GP), who will hold a doctor’s surgery 3 times a week.

Studying in the UK has been such a great pleasure, and joining Cardiff Sixth Form College is certainly the highlight of my experience abroad. Six months is not a long time, but it is sufficient for me to fall in love with this city, the people and my life here.

The services he will provide include (but are not limited to): • Monitoring of physical health and well-being (blood pressure, weight, etc). • Acute illness management. • Chronic disease management (asthma, epilepsy, diabetes, etc). • Medication reviews. • Travel Vaccinations. • Counselling. (In sensitive cases involving female students, for example physical examinations, a female chaperone can be arranged.) The doctor will be able to prescribe all medicines currently available in the UK; however these will be at a nominal cost.

Cardiff is a young and vivacious place. CSFC is located in the heart of Cardiff, it is five minutes walking distance to city centre where you could find everything you need. As a boarder, I found this very convenient. Students will also be registered to a local NHS GP surgery, and will be entitled to a free NHS service whilst studying at the college. Students reserve the right to consult both the college doctor and NHS General Practitioner at all times. The doctor will also be able to provide medical work experience and career advice for those wishing to pursue a career in medicine.

The college might not be huge in terms of the number of students, but this allows the teachers to have more time and focus on individual students. We get a huge amount of assistance from teachers and staffs on all problems we might face, no matter if it’s academic or personal. As an international student, the unfamiliar environment did worry me a bit before I started school here. However, the small community allows the whole year group to quickly mix together. We have made friend with students all around the world, and I must say this would be one of my most precious experiences. There are no doubts to the academic excellence of CSFC, previous years result and awards had proved themselves. After I join the college, I found that the recipe for the success is simple - be determined and work your hardest! As I chose to do five subjects, my schedule is quite tight, especially when exams are approaching. However, the amount of preparation, such as mock papers and previous exam questions, built up my confidence and I felt no pressure during exam time. To prepare us for university, the college does not only ensure we obtain the top grade; they do so much more. The teachers and staff know how much we would like to enter our chosen university courses, and the experts here provide us with all the help we could want. I have had the opportunity to undertake work experience in the Crown Court and a solicitors’ firm, which has enabled me to gain insight of my chosen career. I have never felt so determined to achieve my goals and so confident in my future. I have had valuable and eye opening experience and I wish to share it with more people. I sincerely recommend CSFC to all students who have passion and are willing to work hard for their future and their dreams.

The college reserves the right to make variations to programme contents, entry requirements and methods of delivery, and to discontinue, merge or combine programmes, both before and after a student’s admission to the college, if such action is considered by the college to be necessary.

The college also reserves the right to make appropriate changes to policy details at any point in the academic year. Applicants, their representatives, and parents will, of course, be advised of any changes before they are implemented.

I can easily say that I made the right decision in coming here over the other colleges I was offered. Not only does it have the best teachers, many of whom are former chief examiners, and experts in their fields, but it has a constructively competitive environment which challenges students and contributes to the outstanding success of this college. Easily, CSFC is the top college in the UK!
