Leaders in the 21st century must lead through influence, not positional power, with a focus on agile teams more than just talented individuals. Learning has become visual and interactive with rapid practical application, especially as teams are more digitally connected and geographically dispersed. These are the conditions and realities we live in that has put GiANT as a forerunner in transforming leaders and their teams by training them to multiply health throughout every sub-culture inside their organization.

Fulfilling Dreams Since 1868 More than 150 years ago, Busey opened its doors in Urbana—helping generations of families in Champaign County achieve their dreams, from buying homes and opening businesses to saving for retirement and college. As the organization reflects on its humble beginnings in 1868, Busey is thankful for today’s opportunity to serve countless customers and communities across Illinois, Indiana, Missouri and Florida. Pillars of Success Looking back on a storied history that includes 15 decades of strength and service, Busey knows its success and growth wouldn’t be possible without its 4 Pillars—customers, associates, shareholders and communities. These individuals, past and present, are invaluable— the true foundation of the organization—and they contribute significantly to the Busey story.
Commitment to Community Developing long-term relationships built on trust, not transactions, is paramount to the financial organization. While the original founders of Busey understood the significance of economic prosperity, they also realized the importance of bettering the community. Since the Busey brothers first opened the doors 150 years ago, investing time and energy in bettering the communities they serve has always been a key component to their business—and that philosophy is still strong today. Busey and its associates donated more than $1 million and volunteered nearly 20,000 hours last year alone. From supporting the arts to advocating for youth and bridging needs of neighbors, Busey is humbled to provide a helping hand since 1868.
Busey’s vision of service excellence in everything it does for its Pillars is behind every organizational decision. Whether anticipating the needs of customers, recruiting and retaining the best and brightest associates or supporting community organizations through volunteerism, Busey knows it is only as strong as the relationships it has with these Pillars.
As Busey observes its sesquicentennial, the organization is pleased to continue its commitment to community service in 2018 and beyond through a variety of charitable initiatives—including its annual Community Promise Month in April. For the entire month, Busey harnesses the collective power of associates to make a positive, lasting impact in local communities.
Busey is also grateful for community relationships, including its partnership with the Champaign County Chamber of Commerce, which advocates and supports the success and development of local businesses.
“The goal of Community Promise Month is simple —to partner for purpose and progress to strengthen neighborhoods and make a positive, lasting impact in the communities we call home,” says Chris Shroyer, President & Chief Executive Officer of Busey Bank.
8
“I’ve invested a lot in my children, but we still don’t have a place to call home,” says Heather Rose, future Habitat for Humanity homeowner. “Moving around is hard on them. They look forward to a backyard to play and hang out in with friends and family.” Team members will also support Rebuilding Together Peoria, which helps low-income homeowners with repairs and rehab, and in Missouri, associates will volunteer with HomeFirst STL, an agency working to end homelessness. Still, other associates will volunteer at Habitat for Humanity ReStore consignment shops across the Busey footprint.
Busey associates are encouraged to lend a helping hand to those in need—and they are always willing to give back, selflessly. “During Community Promise Month, we ask associates to find a way to make a difference, and each and every year, these associates heed the call. Since the inception of Community Promise Month in 2012, associates have volunteered more than 10,000 hours in this month alone with various community-service groups,” says Shroyer. Building Strong Relationships Among the organizations served during Community Promise Month are Habitat for Humanity and the United Way, two non-profit agencies that work tirelessly to make a difference in the community. As part of a bank-wide neighborhood revitalization initiative with Habitat for Humanity, associates from Champaign and Ford counties will provide sweat equity through more than 400 volunteer shifts and over 1,400 volunteer hours in 2018. The result of this effort is helping one Urbana family achieve the dream of homeownership.
Busey is also privileged to support the United Way’s efforts to improve the quality of life and build a brighter future for countless community members. Through the annual United Way campaign, Busey associates have given more than $1 million to the organization in the last five years. Associates also volunteer regularly at events and serve as a committee or board member for the organization or supported agency. “We are beyond grateful for associates willing to give their time, talents and financial resources to assist these organizations and many others throughout the year. Their generosity to help build stronger communities has fulfilled countless dreams since 1868,” says Shroyer. Busey would like to thank its customers, associates and community members for their continued dedication and support over the last 150 years— their combined efforts have helped make something very special . . . Busey! 9

PUBLIC POLICY UPDATE Champaign County First’s annual advocacy trip to Springfield occurred this past February. Champaign County First is a private-public partnership with a focus on economic development and infrastructure for the betterment of all in Champaign County. The participants met with the Department of Natural Resources to discuss trail projects in Mahomet and Savoy; followed by the Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity to advocate for Champaign County’s joint Enterprise Zones applications. Senator Scott Bennett took the group to the Senate floor just before lunch. A working lunch was held at the Illinois Chamber and it included a legislative update from the Illinois Chamber President & CEO Todd Maisch. This was followed by a meeting with State Treasurer Michael Frerichs. Champaign County First members met with many of our Champaign County’s legislators outside of their respective Chambers at the rail. Lastly, the group wrapped up with a meeting that included Deputy Director of IDOT. We outlined all of Champaign County First’s priority projects for their consideration.
The advocacy work of the Chamber provides you and your business with a voice and expands further than just the Champaign County First Committee. Your membership in the Chamber provides you with a unique volunteer opportunity to advocate for the business community in Champaign County. The Chamber’s Public Policy Committee researches, discusses, vets and recommends policy initiatives to local governing units. Whether through the presentation of simple statements or in-depth campaigns on issues important to you, advocating makes sure that your point of view is represented and clearly heard by the community and decision-makers. The Chamber of Commerce can provide a vehicle for finding your voice and driving it forward towards a positive action. The Chamber seeks to provide the active support of advocacy, building respect for your views and promoting the voices of the people and organizations that place their trust in us. If you are interested in volunteering on the Public Policy Committee, please contact our Public Policy Director, Garret Hill at GarretH@champaigncounty.org.

English Brothers Company is a family owned general contracting company which was founded in 1902 by brothers Richard C. English and Edward C. English while attending the University of Illinois. The Company management was succeeded by Richard C. English’s sons R.C. English Jr. (Dick) and Edward H. English. Succeeding Dick and Ed English was their nephew, Edward J. Hynds Jr. Edward J. Hynds Jr. retired, remaining active in the industry to this date and named his son, Michael E. Hynds as current president. That brings the comapny up thru the fourth generation. The fifth generation, R.J. Hynds joined the company in 2007 and currently serves as controller and head of commercial maintenance. Travis Baker joined the company in 1998 and serves as vice president of the company and oversees new construction. Over the years the company has been responsible for the construction of many commercial, industrial,
and institutional projects in the area. Many of the early projects were constructed for the University of Illinois-most notably The Illini Union, The Auditorium, Lincoln Hall and Memorial Stadium. Other projects of great significance to the company’s history was the construction of Chanute field in Rantoul for the war department and Camp Lawrence and Camp Perry at the Great Lakes Naval training station during World War I. One of their favorites though, is the beautiful Methodist church at the corner of Church and State streets constructed in 1906. Hynds admits his ancestors set the bar high, but the English Brothers Company maintains success by operating under the same principles put in place since the founding of the company. Those principles include insisting on high quality work, be honest and fair in your dealings with others, maintain high integrity and strong work ethics. These principles don’t change despite the ever changing business climate, technology, means & methods, manufacturing procedures and social issues. Under current management of the company, they’ve constructed many buildings and facility’s in the area and continue to service repeat customers. Some of the more recent notable projects are the Sholem Aquatic Center, Urbana High School Outdoor Athletic Complex, Hyatt Hotel, Clark-Lindsey Village Pool & Wellness Center, and Clark-Lindsey Village Assisted Living and Skilled Care facilities. From large projects, remodels, upgrades or maintenance of your existing facility, English Brothers continues to treat your work as if it were their own. Hynds states he receives the most satisfaction from restorations. Whether it be an ornate wall of bookcases or a complete historical restoration, bringing back the glory and beauty of early architecture and its features of a by-gone era brings an unexplainable pride. This type of work seems to be becoming a lost art amongst many in
12
the industry. Very few firms want to spend the time that these types of projects demand. In addition, with each passing decade the skills required seem to diminish a bit. English Brothers Company has made and maintained many strong relationships over the years in Central Illinois that are valued greatly. Long standing partnerships with local clients, architects and engineers are one of the main reasons they have been
able to sustain for over 116 years. They believe that giving back and growing the community is very important and they strive to do that by using as many local resources and support as possible. At the peak of their work last summer, English Brothers employed nearly 100 trades men and women who live in Champaign County and surrounding areas. At one count, there were 37 different towns these trade workers lived in and commuted to the City of Champaign each and every day. They use the restaurants, banks, retail stores and many other merchants and businesses in the area. English Brothers feels very fortunate to be a part of and contribute to such a great community. Later, she was appointed to the Champaign City Council and in 2015 she was elected as the mayor of Champaign. Laura Edwards, ATHENA Young Professional Award® Recipient and Deb Frank Feinen, ATHENA Award® Recipient
Along with her involvement in local government, Deb has had an impressive career practicing law. She began her law career working as a confidential attorney and later as a hearing officer for the Illinois Pollution Control Board. She then went on to establish her own local, all-female owned law firm, Nally, Bauer, Feinen & Mann P.C. In 2013, she transitioned to Tummelson, Bryan & Knox where she was immediately made partner. Her commitment to service and giving is evident in both her service in local government as well as her career as an attorney. Her intelligence and skills as an attorney have aided her in solving some of the most tragic cases - work she typically does on a pro bono basis. In her day-to-day work as an attorney and as mayor, Deb has always had a passion for mentoring others. She has a strong desire to help develop the next generation of leaders throughout Champaign County. She has also been actively involved in a number of community organizations including Girl Scouts of East Central Illinois, Head Start Policy Council and Foundation, National Council for Negro Women - Champaign Chapter, Project 18, Habitat for Humanity, Community Coalition, East Central Illinois Women’s Bar Association and Executive Club of Champaign County. Laura Edwards, community relations coordinator at Clark-Lindsey, was named the 2018 ATHENA Young Professional Award® recipient. Laura has demonstrated exceptional initiative over her key responsibilities: the student internship program, outside community reach and inside community support. The student internship program, which she singlehandedly created, has employed over 100 students. Laura has worked to establish the CL Volunteers program which works with local not-for-profit agencies as well as Ethel & Maude’s Table, a community outreach program with the purpose of bringing together older adults throughout the community.
14
Laura is dedicated to making Champaign-Urbana an “age friendly” community and demonstrates this through her involvement in various community organizations. In 2015, Laura was recognized as one of Champaign-Urbana’s Forty Under Forty by the Central Illinois Business Magazine. She participates in the AARP/WHO Age Friendly City initiative and was a founding board member of the Girls on the Run organization. She has also been actively involved in a number of other community organizations and programs including Chamber ACE Leadership program, United Way’s Emerging Leaders program, The Buddy Walk, Women’s Business Council, Leadership Illinois, Junior League of Champaign-Urbana and LeadingAge Illinois.

Longevity in Business:
How to create long-lasting success. Written by: Lindsay Quick Everyday there are businesses gearing themselves up for their grand opening and others who are just settling into a comfortable routine after a few years, but rarely can you find a business that has been able to sustain themselves across many decades. For those that have been able to stand the tough test of time, being able to change and adapt has been an integral part of their narrative. Established in 1867, the University of Illinois marked its 150th anniversary in 2017. Throughout it’s tenure in the Champaign-Urbana community, the university has been a economic catalyst for growth and development. The focus of the university has changed and shifted as the needs of the community and the greater world have as well. When the doors first opened in 1868, the first student enrolled in agriculture. Throughout the late 1800’s and early 1900’s the agriculture department continued to thrive and developed various cutting edge technologies in crop sciences.
growing and adapting to meet the needs of the ever-changing world. In it’s 150 years, the University of Illinois has made numerous contributions to society across many disciplines. The greater community continues to support and embrace this spirit of learning and growth. Around the same time that the university was established, another local business was developing itself as well. “It’s not lost on us that we share a birthday with the University of Illinois,” explains Stephen Morris, president of C.V. Lloyde Audiovisual. The company, which was also founded in 1867, initially started as a music store that offered sheet music, pianos, pump organs and other band instruments has grown to become a community leader in commercial audiovisual design and installation. Morris adds, “While the university remains our single largest client, we want to continue serving the expanding surrounding markets while continuing to be the go-to for our local community.”
A few years later, classes in business, banking and insurance became increasingly popular and programs in domestic science and art opened doors for women to attend college. At the turn of the century, other departments such as chemical engineering, horticulture, mathematics and education began to take shape and play an important role in the culture of the university. Throughout the 1900’s other disciplines were added to meet the growing needs of the community and the world. Throughout it’s long and vibrant history the University of Illinois has continued to stay relevant by continuously 16
Music has been a part of people’s lives for a very long time, but it has still taken proper planning and
intention to stay relevant in the industry. As the technology changes so does the demand of musicians and other sound enthusiasts. C.V. Lloyde Audiovisual has been able to keep up with industry trends which has allowed them to expand their client base to surrounding states such as Ohio, Indiana and Missouri ultimately increasing their net worth exponentially in recent years. When referencing their recent successes, Morris explains, “Staff will always be your single most important investment. Supporting your team with resources to help them be successful translates to long term employees who create growth for your company.”
ice cream so that people can enjoy it all year around. Before the rise in popularity of food trucks, Dennis created the Moo Mobile so that he could get his ice cream out to more people. With the success of the first truck Dennis and Chris have set to work on another new truck, so that they will be able to reach even more people. Recently, they added the automobile drive thru (referred to as the Moo Thru) to their Sidney location making the ice cream even more accessible. Thinking about the longevity and long term goals for a business can seem overwhelming and for some even unattainable. However, investing in people and being willing to adapt and change with the times can often result in long-lasting success.
Although in an incredibly different industry, Chris West, manager of the Sidney Dairy Barn agrees: “We put a lot of time and effort into training and developing our staff.”

Dennis Riggs, owner of the Sidney Dairy Barn, explains, “We need our product to taste like old fashioned, hand cranked ice cream. Just like the kind my mom used to make on the farm.” After perfecting their basic recipe, Dennis and Chris focused on figuring out new ways to get the ice cream to people. The Barn itself closes through the winter months, but they have adapted by selling quarts of their
