VIEWPOINTS According to the 2008 US Census Bureau, 86% of firms in Illinois employ less than 20 employees. In these firms, responsibilities for the Human Resources function are often assigned to someone who is the business office manager, has done payroll or is “good with people.” The impact of an individual who hasn’t been properly trained in handling Human Resources issues is difficult to measure, but could potentially include increased staff turnover, legal missteps, lowered employee morale, improperly contested worker’s compensation or unemployment claims, and decreased customer satisfaction-all affecting employee productivity, customer loyalty, and company profits. Every two months, the Chamber surveys its members on a topic of local relevance. Results of the survey are communicated to Chamber members via this “Viewpoints” section.

Part 2: Developing Rapport and Interest in your Product

Building rapport is a critical step on every sales call, whether for a new prospect or a long-time client. This session will teach participants to determine value from a buyer’s point of view, employ three strategies to make buyers eager to talk and establish immediate credibility to build alignment with buyers.

AFTERNOON SESSION: 1:30 TO 4:30 P.M. Part 1: Responding to Objections

Objections are a natural part of selling. But there is a proven process to overcoming these protests. In this session, participants will learn to apply a win-win process to resolve objections, identify points of agreement to lower buyer resistance and respond to the six most common objections with confidence.

Part 2: Gaining Commitment

As you move toward the end of the sales process, it becomes more important to create a sense or urgency for the buyer and find a natural way to ask for the commitment. At the completion of this session, participants will be able to evaluate buyer perspectives to move the sale forward, engage the prospect’s emotions in the buying process and practice six methods to ask for the sale with confidence.

The cost to attend one session is $57 for members/ $74 for non-members. The cost to attend BOTH sessions is $99 for members/ $129 for non-members. he Champaign County Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors is a group of area leaders who come together to promote business in Champaign County. From a diverse array of backgrounds and positions, board members make policy decisions on behalf of the Chamber, what the Chamber advocates and also determines how to best encourage, promote and maintain a booming business environment in Champaign County. Operations Manager, Advanced Filtration Systems, Inc. Active on the board: 4 years Background: B.S. from University of New Hampshire, M.S. from University of Tennessee Knoxville. Work experience includes manufacturing and distribution environments, along with experience as a part time instructor for several years with Parkland. Tabatha held a variety of positions at Rockwell Automation before joining AFSI a year and a half ago. Interesting about Tabatha: “I am married and have 2 teenage children, so life is never dull. My husband and his family were born and raised in the area, and my mom

moved from the east coast to Champaign County a few years ago to be closer to our family. We really appreciate all that the area has to offer. The one thing I haven’t given up is my love of the Red Sox and Patriots (I can hear the groans and boos now!). At least it keeps me out of the CubsCardinals battles.” What Tabatha says about the Chamber: “The strength of the Chamber lies in its members. I would like to challenge all members to get more involved in the upcoming months. As an individual business, it is difficult to tackle proposed legislation or regulations that will adversely impact the organization’s viability. The Chamber has been successful in bringing multiple businesses together to make recommendations which may lessen the financial impact of legislation or regulations. If the Chamber is not successful in the attempt to lessen the financial impact, the Chamber has at least

He has previously worked for a Central Illinois member of Congress before starting with the Farnsworth Group. Interesting about Joe: He was a student athlete at the University of Illinois on both the track and field and cross country teams. Though not on a team anymore, Joe still runs for health and fitness.

Mark Ballard, President, BankChampaign, N.A. Active on the board: 6 years Background: Mark has been with BankChampaign, N.A. since 1991 and recently stepped into the position of bank President. In addition to his nearly 30 years of banking and investment management experience, Mark is a CPA with a B.S. from Illinois Wesleyan University and has a Master’s degree from Illinois State University, both in accounting. Mark currently serves as president of the board of trustees for the Champaign Public Library, is chair of the interim board of directors of Promise Healthcare, a board member for the Champaign Library Foundation, a member of Champaign West Rotary and chair of Champaign County First. He has also served as board chair for: the Chamber, United Way and the Champaign County YMCA. Downtown Champaign is the backdrop for Friday Night LIVE, a free street-side performance series open to the general public. Friday Night Live will be held every Friday from 6 to 8 p.m., running through September 21.
