MARCH NON-PROFIT FINANCIAL IMPROVEMENT

presented by Matt Thomas, Design Group International Non-profits have three major economic advantages over other ways of doing business: donated labor, donated revenues and the freedom to measure success by something other than the financial profits passed along to shareholders. Nevertheless, non-profits face unique challenges to their success often not seen in other types of organizations. Whether those challenges are uncertain funding streams - for instance, based in appropriations from a state budget - or the particular relationship between a non-profit’s board and its staff, there are ways non-profits can design their organization and their mission strategy to meet those challenges and maximize the advantages available to non-profits. We will discuss how to achieve and maintain non-profit financial health while increasing mission reach and effectiveness. The topics will include: • Strategic Fundraising (percentages/costs/return) • Clarifying your nonprofit business model • Revenue-based (multi-year) budgeting • Narrative spending plans to connect costs to mission • Clarifying board and staff roles • Determining a healthy cash reserve and equity position
