What Is Your Sign? In Arch 101, we started the class by making three collages, that can gave us a lot of ideas when we started to build the sign. I got inspired a lot by the sign pictures that the professor showed us in the class, after that I got many ideas on the collages and also the sign.

After choosing three collages that fits our personality Which explain us in 3 words we were headed to Search of the signs, clips arts and anything that would Lead us to create the collage. Soon we will start building The actual sign.

Other  Collages

Sign I In the first sign that I build, I used foam board and pencil for all of my materials. It is a shape of a piggy bank with a no sign on a light ball. My idea on this sight is to save money from saving lighting. After the class discussion, I realize that the idea that I wan to said it is not so clear. Because of my drawing and also my design. Next time, I will shown a clearer image to make improvements on my sign.

Sign II On the second sign of my design, I got an idea of from my first design, and I build this new sign with the materials including foam board and pencil. In this design, I continue my idea from last sign, instead of drawing a light ball, I draw a over of the light and the dollar sign below is the light ball. I want to give people an idea of when people using light, is wasting money, and polluting the environment, what they can do is use light balls like LED instead to save little by little.

A Journey of Discovery to Local Places of Wonder In this project, I decided to visit the wellness center in CCSF. I never got a chance to visit this building in this school before, so I was very excited about it. The day I visited is a cloudy day, and I came to the building from it’s 2nd floor, the first side this building gave me was very bright, because the exterior of the building was all make by grass, so I believe the inside should have a lot of lighting. This building is new in CCSF, and I got inspire from this building a lot in this trip.

Collages of the Journey

Make a Wall, Make a Window, Evoke Wonder Reflection: Before I build this wall, I chose triangle to be the main shape of my wall, because triangle is the strongest pattern. I want my wall to be strong, but not too chilled. After the class discussion, I realized it I should always ask my myself what I want people to feel through this design, and I should always ask myself why I design it.

Wall Model Second Iteration

Reflections: In my second wall model, I cut out some window for people to have more lighting, and I also designed two pieces of triangle in a specific angel, so people can lay down on it.

Third Iteration of the Wall Reflections: In this one, I brought in a new idea of the wall, I used green color on the bottom and window with lot of holes to create very peaceful sight to people.

Most significant aspects and qualities of my design would be the shape of the structure. The shapes of the design makes it outstanding and beautiful. When people first look at my design they will curios about the bold color I used, and the different shape I used. But all of them has a connection. In my design I can separated into three parts, in the first part, rhythm and repetition is very outstanding. For the second part of my design, I used regular repetition to cut the wall into rectangular shape, they are all equal and same. The third part, I used different high of vertical rectangle in the color of green to make it like grassers. I think the most relax thing to do is to down on the prairie, breathing the freshness of the grass and look at the stars.

Reflection: From the last model, I got an idea of the floor, the walls and and the roof of this model, I used the asymmetric idea concept that I learn from last class to created this new model.

Make a Place That Evokes Wonder Reflection: This is my final model, I build this one base on my last model. I used the concept of asymmetric and repetition to create this model.

Most significant aspects and qualities of my design would be the shape of the structure and my experiences from the last models. In this design, I want to create a relaxation design, so people in the urban cities, which is very crowed and busy to slow and take a rest. In this design, I used a lot of triangle shape, because the wing of an air plane is triangle. I think when people look out from the window of an airplane would feel very relax and also freedom. For the entrance, I create a large opening space for people to walk in, and the shape reflected on the floor was amazing, so when people walk in, it will gives them a lot of excitement. On the other side, I created very crowdedly, it is stand for the urban city, also there are stairs that people can walk on top of the long hallway on the side. When people look out from the world, I want people to see different views, but in the same building. I want people to understand that they can experience differently even in the same situation, so do not say you have no break time for yourself again.

Plans and Elevations

Story Board

OMG, what is that? Let me get closer to see.

Here I go!

Wow, this is huge, Let me walk around.

OMG, I want to stay here for my entire life, it is beautiful

Oh, there is an entrance.

There are stairs, let me walk up.

WOW…

I don’t think is the main one, looks so crowd.

I will bring my friends next time.

THANK YOU!

Looking for inspiration I was looking for inspiration of sectioning and folding at the same time. And this is a very interesting one that I found, because it combine both of the ideas together.

Early individual design For the first model, I choice to start with folding. In this model on the right, I cut out some same sizes paper. And try to fold each of them in a different way. I found out that it can look interesting when all of it combine together.

Second iteration For the Second iteration, I tried sectioning. It is quit different than the one I researched it. But I think I have the same idea. I first cut out same pieces, and glued them together. I did not want it to look like domino, so I glues then from different side.

Site Analysis I choice the courtyard for my final project because the courtyard faces was selected due to the interesting existing site element. Such as the grid structure, planter, as well as the batmale building.

Getting start for the group project: Group members: I am very happy to have peter and Hana as my group mate. They both look nice and easy to talk to. Peter is the team lead, Hana is the photographer, and I am the accounting in our group. And on the first date, we already shared each other’s contact information and available schedules.

Individual model for the site For this model, I used the sectioning because the faces on the site are also sectioned. And I also seen some bird flying in and out, building it with a circle because a bird nest is round.

Group model#1 First, we planed to have three individual structure and have a hallway connecting to all of it. Also we put a roof on the hallway to make more interesting when the shadow reflected on the floor.

Group model#2 On the second model, we removed the roof considering the prices. Also we changed the triangle structure to a inside pyramid shape, which is the outside looks like a cube, but it is actually the same pyramid as the other two.

Feasibility problems Before starting the construction, we went to home depot and look for the possible materials and their prices. After, calculation, we have over way too much budget, so we decided to make changes from the design to solve the problems.

The Re-‐birth In the model, we scale down the size of the structure from 20 feet to 8 feet the highest. And also we changed pyramid shape to a cube shape in order to save more money.

Construction begins

We finally started building structure in a beautiful day.

Structure, tools and materials Material used

Tools used:

•2*3 wood beams

• Miter Saw

•1 and 2.5 inch screws

• Drill

•Fabric

• Shovel

•Hemp rope

• Level

•4*8 wood board

• Hammer

•2*2 wood beams

Experience the construction First, we level up the planter with some of the left over wood that we picked up. After that we cut down some 4 by 8 board for its base.

Building frame After finishing the base, we started to building with the frame of the first structure, because it will be the most complex one out of the three. We used 2 by 2 on the top and also the middle support. And we used 2 by 3 for four side and also the bottom. Because that will make the structure more balance.

Continuing the first structure The first structure has so much detail work which takes most of our time. Such as tying, measuring, cutting, screwing.

First structure finishing

We finally finish the first structure with our hard works.

Second structure

We spend the least time on the second structure because the idea of it, is the transparence, so we built it only the frame.

Third structure The third structure is a enclose with wood and fabric to be able to make it all dark. The idea is to take out people’ vision abilities, so they can try experiencing things like sound and touch.

SWOT Development Strengths: I work really hard during the project, and that is my biggest strength. Weaknesses: I am easy to get angry with my group mate, but now I learn how to communicate with them. Opportunities: This is a great project to put into my future portfolio, and it taught me about how design is different to actually building. Threats: I still have a lot to improve on my vision.

Final reflection At the beginning of the construction, I was curious about all the tools. When I first used the tools, I can not let it go. But the fact tells me that, the tools are too heavy for me, and it makes my arm feel tired. Through out the project, I have a lot argument with my group mate, and I think that is because I did tell them my idea at the beginning. I used to think that if I bring out too much idea, then the group will always stay in the argument and never move on. But in fact, as a group we should all share ideas no matter it is good or not. I am glad that I have this opportunities to experience a actual building, and I believe that will influence me for my future career.
