FINAL LEARNING PORTFOLIO BY: JAMEEL SHAHEER
Learning Objectives: Pragmatic Consideration: How Can we achieve the most with the least?
Design Consideration: What is the most inspiring and informed way to start this project?
Collaboration considerations: How do we start, sustain, and successfully complete our responsibilities so that our installation is “greater than the sum of the parts”?
Pragmatic Consideration
I first started out with no idea of how I wanted to approach our combined ideas and concepts So, I decided to experiment with different materials that would be effective in construction to achieve the most with the least”.
At the time I concluded that the primary kits of parts would consist of PBC piping and cardboard for a ensuring theme into urbanism by connecting non organic elements into already constructed environments.
Using PBC and cardboard would also be very easy to disassemble upon completion of the project.
Pragmatic Consideration (CONT’D) I wanted to include a wind turbine into the design that would use the properties of nature to expand and contract onto the model design.
This idea would have been easily incorporated into the environment by attaching the turbine onto the PBC structure. This Idea was very cost efficient and a challenge to explore a natural language that surrounds us daily.
But like all ideas this was just the beginning of a evolutionary process that expanded into something much more.
Pros: Adds a different concept by channeling natural accuracies and apply them to everyday social standers.
Conns: unable to determine if the wind factor was to extreme or to suppressed in the amount of time given to complete the project.
Pragmatic Consideration (CONT’D) The first location had a very urban construction setting
The Idea was to provide a social experience by utilizing the path of egress to form a location that would enhance urban environment's by adding resting areas and non social areas inside natural spaces.
Design Consideration
ďƒ˜ After trail and error Ideas progressed onto a different location with more complexion into concepts.
ďƒ˜ As location changed so did my understanding for space and form.
The joints was a mater of experimenting with different materials to achieve the maximum properties to our ideas.
Design Consideration(CONT’D) Pros: The fact that its easy to construct in a environment that’s all organic. Cons: You had to be very careful in constructing with thinner materials.
Our design consisted of : 2x2’ Pine wood , ¼” White plastic cable clamps , ½” black split flex tubing ,White mason line on a 1,000 foot roll , EPDM rubber straps , S hooks , 10”galvanized spike with 2” washers and 1”screws.
I decided to switch materials from non organic to Organic so that the new area of space would be consisted in design opportunities.
Design Consideration(CONT’D) The ideas evolved into flexibility and movement that could be transformed by others and the environment.
It also incorporated a divine design language around ideas of connectedness.
The space also took into account both individual and community interaction within a natural setting.
the site gave form in understanding new areas to explore in design Itself.
Collaboration considerations Using 2x2’ and white mason line we wanted to create a system of manipulation using human interaction and the transformable language of nature in the flexibly of our structure.
Our team area of focus consisted of: system functions related to our theme , system process , decision making , how to resolve issues and find resolutions and challenges pertaining to issues.
Each team member had their own list of reasonability and duties that helped form a smooth process when new ideas was formulated.
Collaboration considerations (CONT’D) Using S Hooks and Rubber straps allowed for durability and easy fasting onto the tree without changing sites natural settings.
The S hooks proved beneficial in supporting the weight and withstanding the pressure of the structure.
The white mason line was extremely thin but was sufficient in supporting the cloth under pressure.
Collaboration considerations (CONT’D) We also wanted other to experience nature in ways never before explored by designing a pulley system.
The pulley system connected all line at different angles along the structure to help enhance flexibility and improve social experience.
During the process every member had strengths and weaknesses that we learned from each other.
Conclusion Every member had their own set of skills that helped In the process of making our concept come to life.
Based on each member expertise we identified areas of weaknesses in ourselves and used it to motivate areas of strength to better understand and construct on our ideas.
This help in time consumption and attention to detail when trying to break down areas of weakness understanding. In conclusion the process was without a doubt, a challenge and a little nerve wrecking but proved to be successful in the end.
