NYC Health & Hospitals’ Test & Trace Corps operates a Mobile Covid-19 testing unit daily in Co-op City from 8 a.m.-7 p.m. on a rotating basis. Remembrance – John Cooper Jr. On this Memorial Day, where we recognize the service of so many, I am sharing the passing of my beloved husband, John Cooper Jr., a man who proudly served in the Air Force. My dear husband passed away last Tuesday, May 23, 2022. He fought a of God until we meet again. I am grateful that God allowed us to share two months short of 35 years together. In Memoriam – Robert L. Williams January 25, 1927 – May 25, 2022

It is with heavy hearts that we say goodbye to our beloved Robert L. Williams, born in South Carolina on January 25, 1927, brought to New York when he was two years old, and lived in the Bronx most of his life. Robert graduated in 1943 from Samuel Gompers Industrial High School, Bronx, NY which prepared him for work assignment at New York City Transit Authority as an electrical Sub-station Maintainer in the Power Department until his retirement. However, Robert was not ready to rest on his laurels. He worked at his friend’s Copeland’s restaurant in Hamilton Heights in Harlem as a chef. Cooking was Robert’s passion, he loved to cook, which landed him a job with a private railroad car company as a chef, and he had the privilege to cook for then-Vice President George Herbert Walker Bush. Robert was a Past Master of Fidelity Lodge #97; his title was PM Robert “Robbie” Williams. Robert and his family were original shareholders in Co-op City until his passing on May 25, 2022. He was an active member of Building 25 Association, and would always greet you with a smile and a calm demeanor. When called upon, he would offer his assistance to any neighbor or wherever it was needed. He loved spreading holiday cheer, whether it was handing out Christmas envelopes to our Maintenance/ porters, neighbors, the staff at our local pharmacy, or mail delivery personnel – he gave from his whole heart. Robert is survived by his sister, Patricia Ferguson, and a host of nephews, nieces, family and friends. He was a faithful Protestant. Viewing for the late Robert L. Co-op City Times watched people come out of the building exit with their dogs and allow them to urinate on the beam walls outside of the door exit. They should be told to walk their dogs to the curbside away from the exit door to allow their dogs to urinate. Having dogs urinate outside of the door exit causes odors and germs. The beams outside of the doors were just placed with new bricks. All you see on the new bricks is the urine at the bottom of these beams where the dogs urinate. Urine causes odors and germs to migrate. Signs should be put up about not using the beams for their dogs and to tell people to walk their dogs away from Co-op City Times.

Make This Summer Better Previously, this community looked terrible with all of the sidewalk bridges and the fences that covered everything. But, now, these items are slowly being removed from here. Fence – Common Sense Lots of cooperators have complained about the excessive amount of sidewalk bridges and fences that have been erected throughout this community. And, most people will probably agree with them if this matter was thoroughly considered. However, NYC had developed some stringent safety rules for exterior building work. And, their rules focused on safe conditions. However, did a lot of cooperators and I think that Riverbay had erected too many sidewalk bridges and too many fences here? Absolutely! Looking back, Riverbay closed off a tremendous portion of the greenway near buildings 23 and 25 when those fences were erected. So, the main walkway that led to the Dreiser mall from those two buildings was closed off with fences. Well, you would think that the other walkway, near building 10, that led to Dreiser would be open. Nope! Riverbay also erected fences to block off that main walkway. So, essentially, the cooperators that lived on the other side of the greenway could not walk over to the Dreiser mall. Therefore, I had no choice but to complain about this matter. And, thankfully, some of the fences were removed so that cooperators could use the walkway between buildings 23 and 25. But, there were a lot of calls also about other sections of our community that were completely closed off. Then, thankfully, some

of the excessive amount of fencing was removed from But, according to last week’s article in the Coop City Times, this building repair work that is also known as Local Law 11, was completed for several buildings. Here are the completed building numbers in section 4: 22, 23, and 25. Buildings 20, 21, and 24 will be completed by the end of June. However, I’ve personally seen that dates were changed for lots of things in this community. So, please be patient with every expected date that you read or hear about in this community. Anyway, work on the exterior areas of some of our other buildings will start very soon. And, according to the article, this work will “continue into next year.” Bottom line: Based on this information, do you think that other upcoming buildings might have problems with too much fencing? Well, we’ll see. Be Careful at the Beach Regardless of the calendar, summer has started for a lot of people. So, a lot of people will be traveling and having a good time. However, similar to other years, some people might take things too far. Then, that’s when big trouble begins. For instance, hanging out at a beach can be a lot of fun. But, some people have underestimated what can happen when they go into the water. So, they go out too far and then they discover that the water currents are too powerful for them. Then, the media is covering their story. Next, please be careful if you’re going to ask another person to watch your children. Now, sure,

some people might seem to be nice and kind. However, do they exercise good judgment with their own children inside and outside of their home? Do you really think that they should be watching any child? Well, read on. Some people have displayed the amount of love and care that they have towards their children when they went to a beach. So, they allowed their young children to roam around the beach unescorted for hours. Meanwhile, the police found their children and placed them into a play area just for lost children. Then, shockingly, the parent made a decision to call the police hours they had their child for several hours. Horrible! Bottom line: Please be careful this summer. And, please make sure that your children are always in good hands. The New York State Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) would be tasked with determining the feasibility of implementing a microstamping law. Should the agency determine that a microstamping law is possible, then the bill would require the establishment of programs and processes that utilize the microstamping technology. Additionally, if the DCJS decides microstamping is viable, the bill would make selling a microstamped-enabled gun with no stamp illegal. 4. A7865-A (Fahy)/ S.4511-A (Kaplan): This bill would require social media companies in New York to establish and provide their plan for handling hateful conduct on their respective platforms, as well as, provide users of those platforms with easily accessible features to report hateful conduct. 5. A.10428-A (People-Stokes)/S.9229-A (Hoylman): This bill would effectively eliminate the grandfathering of any large capacity ammunition feeding devices, such as magazines, belts and drums, bought before the establishment of the Safe Act or devices manufactured before 1994. 6. A. 10497 (Jacobson)/S.9407-B (Kavanagh): This bill would make the purchase of a body vest illegal for any individual not employed in a profession that is deemed eligible for a body vest by the

law enforcement and other designated agencies will be able to purchase a body vest. The bill would also ban the sale of body vests online and require that they be purchased only in-person. 7. Caregivers Making the Connection There are close to 6 million people in the United States living with Alzheimer’s, which is predicted to nearly triple by 2060. As the number of people with Alzheimer’s continues to increase, so will the need for caregivers. Caring for a person with Alzheimer’s disease or related dementias can be challenging. People with dementia may stop recognizing the person caring for them, have trouble sharing their desires and feelings, and become entirely dependent upon their caregiver for daily activities such as eating, using the restroom and bathing. It is not an easy task to care for a loved one who once cared for you. It can be the one who may have been the rock of the family, the provider, and the one you

progress throughout our community. All that is needed is your signature. Your help will guarantee funding success. your loved one has Alzheimer’s disease; some caregivers act like they do not see the effect of the disease on their loved one’s mental and intellectual function as a way of not accepting that their loved one has the disease! “It is only old age; everyone forgets things; there are days that we can hold normal conversations, sometimes I think they know what they are doing, they only act that way when they want their way; they are just stubborn.” Have you heard others speak this way about a family member with Alzheimer’s disease? Have you ever said these things yourself? Sometimes the statements mentioned above are also used as a form of denial! The success of caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s disease is to educate yourself about the disease and how to manage it. Try to meet the person where they are. It is best not to correct an Alzheimer’s patient about what year it is, where they are or other things. This can cause agitation and reduce trust. Routine is important. Alzheimer’s patients are usually most comfortable with what they know and are familiar with. Try to avoid major changes and introduce new things slowly. Discuss behavioral changes with the doctor. Some behaviors, such as aggression, can be related to undertreated pain or maybe side effects of various medications. Above all, practice self-care. Your loved one needs you to be healthy, both physically and mentally, to provide the best possible care. It is vital to connect with other caregivers going through the same experience as yourself. Last Sunday, May 29, the American Legion Post 1871 in Co-op City held a Memorial Day commemoration at Co-op City’s Harley J. Mosley Sr. Veterans’ Memorial Park. The ceremony was co-sponsored by the Riverbay Fund. Post 1871 Adjutant Antonio E. Codrington was the Master of Ceremonies and he invited Col. Joan R. Davis to render the Invocation. After the attendees stood for the Pledge of Allegiance, Post 1871 Commander Adeyemi LaCrown Toba approached the mic to give his acknowledgements. First, he recognized those lost in service between the years 2020 and 2022, saying that “we are indebted to these people, may their souls continue to rest in peace… We must remember that this time last year we gathered, and some people who clapped, today they are no more. Assemblyman Benedetto lamented the fact that this event was much less populated than previous ones. Building 25 Association Today, we celebrate “Audacity to Hope Day,” for all who fell into despair and crawled out victoriously. Our children struggled to get back into their routine in-person learning in school classroom settings after the Covid-19 pandemic closed schools nearly two years ago; this would be the time of year whereby we celebrate them, especially our graduates. Section 5 Association We came together as an association, community, Manto honor and pay our respect to our dear neighbor, Mr. Robert Gorden Hedgepeth (pictured). Mr. Hedgepeth departed this life on May 14 and a beautiful service was held for him at the First Baptist Church of Bronxville, NY was given many accolades from those whom he served as mentors, coaches, etc. One young man’s testimony mentioned how Mr. Hedgepeth mentored him and it changed his life. Mr. Hedgepeth became president of Section 5 Association around 2014 and served the Section 5 community well. He took on the task of 10 highrise buildings, a cluster of townhouse concerns and problems, which he would bring to the attention of

Be sure to signal well in advance of your intention to pass and wait several car lengths before moving back into the original lane. Intersections are Danger Zones. Intersections are one of the top locations of accidents involving motorcycles. Several types of vehicles can meet at an intersection, and one that lacks visibility could get lost in the mix. Always follow the rules of the road and look twice before proceeding through an intersection. Bad weather adds an extra degree of danger for all types of vehicles. Motorcycles are particularly vulnerable to those hazards. Stay in Your Lane. A motorcyclist has a legal right to their own lane, so there is no reason that you should ever encroach on their space. Motorcycles may be small, but they need plenty of room to maneuver and stop. If you are too close to a motorcycle on the road, you risk a dangerous and potentially deadly accident. Look Several Times Before Turning. Many types of accidents can occur when one or another vehicle decides to make a turn. Before you make a left-hand turn, take extra time to search the area for approaching vehicles. Motorcycles did not have self-canceling turn signals as standard equipment until the late 1970’s, so do not trust these signals as the only indication that someone is or is not making a maneuver. The National Safety Council offers an online class for persons interested in learning how to drive safer, receive an insurance discount and reduce points on your license. The online course in offered at www.ddcnsc.org/ny and costs $29.95. That price is cheaper than the course has been in past years. The course is an interactive, informative course and is a brand new 10th edition of the course. You have one month to complete the course in as many sessions as you desire. Users have three attempts to score at least 75% on the exam at the end to receive credit. The online course offers the same benefits as the live course. A computer with a flash drive is required; visit the website for more information. Be aware of pedestrians and bike riders when operating a motor vehicle. Bike riders must refrain from riding bicycles near buildings and shopping centers. Bicycle riders must respect pedestrians at all times. This is especially important for those persons utilizing electric bikes or scooters, including the for rent scooters present in the community. Everyone needs to share the road safely. Pedestrians need to be vigilant of all the vehicles out on the streets. Headphones should be kept at a low volume and cell phones should not be used while crossing streets or walking near traffic. Remember, if you consume alcoholic beverages, be sure to designate a driver that will not drink. Never operate a motor vehicle if you have consumed alcoholic beverages. Always buckle your seatbelt; it will save your life in a serious collision. Avoid distractions and excess speed when driving; these are the two leading causes of collisions within New York State.
