SET OFF Linda As the proverb goes, The footprint in the sand shows where you have been. Footprints not only represent the memories you create but also symbolize that you cannot hang back. You need to grow up. As time goes by, freshmen in our department have enjoyed various activities so far. There are four events hold by the department to congratulate our freshmen stepping into another successful milestone.

Welcome Party Welcome party is one of the most significant activities in our department. We all realize that a good beginning is half the battle. To freshmen, welcome party can be their first impression of a university. A seemingly simple but formal party can give them infinite imaginations and creations toward the college life. It is natural and normal that freshmen may be afraid of starting living in a new environment. They are not familiar with the campus, the information of classes, the clubs, etc. Therefore, it is a good chance to hold a party before the beginning of the new semester. With the help of seniors, new students received information by chatting with seniors and asking them questions. The main points of having a welcome party help the new students both to know more about the new life and to make friends early. In addition, the seniors hold parties by way of region. In other words, people that come from the same place

go to the same welcome party, so they can resonate with somebody easily by chatting to one another. It is obvious that joining our welcome party kicks off the college life perfectly.

Opening ParAnother activity followed right after the welcome party. The opening party is held at the beginning of the semester. This activity takes account of eating, drinking, playing, and amusing. How wonderful the activity is! This semester, our hosts combine uniform party into this activity. Most people don’t like to wear uniforms in high school. However, we often realize what is valuable only after we lose it. There is little

chance for us to wear uniforms in the university, so that is why the hosts choose the theme to let freshmen recollect the pleasant taste of wearing old uniforms. In addition, the hosts divided people into eight groups according to the tradition. Each group has home parents who guided freshmen to play games. By playing games, our freshmen gain group cohesiveness and start to have a better idea of their classmates. The activity is a funfest. Although the freshmen are the main focus, the seniors are also welcomed to the party to take a look at the new comers and catch up with old classmates. This is an activity for all students in the department.

Orientation Camp Orientation Camp is the highlight among all freshmen activities. This is the camp hosted by particularly the sophomore of the FLLD. They started from scratch to figure out games and dramas. The preparatory period had spanned for half a year. This three-day camp contains different activities from static to dynamic.

Cheerleading The next event following the Orientation Camp is the cheerleading. This year, our department worked together with department of chemical engineering because of the number of boys. Freshmen had practiced cheerleading for a month. Cheerleading needs not only tricks but also dancing skills. In order to impress the viewers, the hosts have to combine tricks and dancing into the plot. This is a big challenge to the hosts. Unlike the previous, working with other department can let freshmen expand their circle of friends. By gathering day and night, they all have bonded friendship. No matter what the result is, freshmen all enjoy the process of cheerleading. In other words, cheerleading is a good

memory and it would be rooted in the heart of freshmen forever. Each activity represents different footprint in the university. Each footprint symbolizes the imprint of growing up. Because of these footprints, we start to look forward to the future. The motivations help us keep working hard. After these activities, the touching feelings are beyond expression. Therefore, let us create another footprint to vary our college life.

Beatris’ house is one of the terraced houses on Ferdene Road, Denmark Hill. It is a two-storied building with a garden and a swimming pool. The distinctive difference between the house and my home in Taiwan is the interior design. It resembles a castle in the woods and and many items, including the floor, the staircase, the shelf, the dresser, and even the toilet seat cover, are made of wood. Beatris is amiable and humorous. I confronted several problems during my stay in London. I did not expect unbearably cold weather in London, and thus I only brought one jacket. That CCU hoodie was my lifesaver. Still, I caught a cold and sweated throughout the wakeful night. Luckily, I was up and about soon. Another problem was with my ATM card. I could not withdraw money from local banks by typing the password I used in Taiwan. I was penniless, and Lando lent me 50 pounds immediately. I searched for solutions, and ultimately counted on Western Union. The money transfer company tackled my crisis. I would like to extend my unreserved gratitude to my parents, Taiwanese friends, Jessica, and friends who I made in London. Were it not for them, my trip would not have been so unforgettable.

come I ended up like this? Oh right, it was Valentine’s weekend. Everyone on Couchsurfing seemed to be so busy during these days that nobody was able to host me. Never mind. That happens sometimes. It’s okay. Don’t panic. At last I walked into Nomads where I finally got the last bed. (“I’ll take it!”) As soon as I opened the door and saw piles of female clothes and stuff scattered around the floor, I knew it was going to be a long night.

The next morning I went to Hyde Park and simply sat there for a long while. I like people-watching and sometimes writing my journal or lying on the grass. What I really needed was to get out of that hostel cause I couldn’t stand it anymore. Then I saw that big bloody-red lips; the lips that I would never forget. It meant one thing: Rocky Horror Picture Show.

The next morning we went to Manly Beach, one of the most famous beaches in Sydney, for Australia Open of Surfing. We bought some ham and bread to the beach and some nectarines as he accidentally ate mine in the middle of the night. (“Where is my nectarines?!!”) We sat on the beach for the concert which was perfectly fit my imagination of Australia: sunny, sexy tanned guy holding a surfing board and happy people drinking and singing.

FLL∞D Autumn 2015 It turned out he might not be that kind

of Italian that we usually think of but he has his own sense of humor. We became good friends afterwards and stay in touch with each other since the day I left. He started to notice this little island called Taiwan and was really interested about it. And I know sometimes an Italian can be acting like a serious German but all we need to do is to get to know them and open up our hearts to the world. And sometimes you ’ll get a shitty room, and sometimes you’ll find a friend by an unexpected way.

FLL∞D Autumn 2015

Blue Lion As we students studying in the department of foreign language and literature, there may be few students that are quite familiar with the medical field. However, I, who was fascinated by this surprising and interesting field, happened to get the chance to take a peek toward it in this summer. Orthopedics(骨科) is my uncle’s specialty. In orthopedics, the most important thing is to recognize the pain source from a patient’s description. I was signed to do the job as a counter staff server. It was simple for me. However, it did take time to get used to the medical working system in the computer, and the most difficult mission was to understand the medical law for applying the payment from NHI (National Health Insurance). During my time paying attention on the policies and laws enacted by the government, I found something that was really ridiculous which was definitely needed to be concerned. When you are making an appointment in the hospital or a clinic, (Here is the example from the clinic.) you have to pay for the copayment(部分負擔)which is often charged as 50NT dollars and 100NT

dollars

for registration fee(掛號費). That would be 150NT dollars in total. In Taiwan, we often take medical service as granted. Anyway, the doctors take the oath of Hippocrates. Doctors always need to devote themselves for patients, right? That’s one of the most ridiculous thing I have heard. Much to my disappointment, our government recognizes this situation as a normal thing. The payment of a medical profession is too low to respond to the effort they pay when heading in this field. Imagine this, you were in tremendous pain due to your wound for almost one week, but you would only be willing to pay 150 dollars to solve your pain which used to bother you for a week and almost annoying you every night during rest. All rights reserved. Some illustrations are sourced from the Internet and used in this issue for non-commercial educational purposes.

FLL∞D Autumn 2015 In addition, solving this problem only takes 15 minutes for a doctor; however, the NHI paid him 320NTdollars for this consultation. It seems to be a quite fair dealing, right? But the only thing you don’t know is that an attendant needs to take a four-year professional medical training and pay for millions of the tuition. More than that, he or she needs to be an intern for more than a year and to have six years of training as a resident. After spending plenty of time, money, and even health to reach the goal as a profession, he or she is only paid 320 dollars after a consultation. A consultation contains the hard working for an attendant in his or her entire life time, and she even may be complained after it. Does it sound like an easy 15 min? I guess not. I got a little promotion, from a staff server became a medical assistant. First of all, I need to understand what really happens in a consultation room. That is the most interesting place in a clinic. As I mentioned above, my uncle’s specialty is orthopedics, so that every patient came for somewhere hurt, pain and wound. As a medical assistant, I need to learn how to film an X-ray photo! So I needed to study anatomy to understand how to film the patient. More, I need to learn how to recognize different medicine, for example like hyaluronan(玻尿酸), phenobarbital(苯巴比妥) , and more. I need to learn as a nurse of

loading injection instrument and prepare them before my uncle scrubbed in, and the nurse would double check all the things again. After all, it’s all about medical so it must to be careful. One of the memories that impressed me a lot was the treatment for a 14 years old girl. She came to call her shoulder pain, and we filmed her. There was none of abnormal thing on the film but the shoulder kept having periosteal reaction(骨膜反映), and my uncle suggested her to have a delicate check in the hospital. In the end, she was diagnosed as osteogenic(骨源性骨肉瘤). She

needs to have treatment in her entire life, and worst, she might not survive to 20 years old. After the experience staying in the clinic, I found that this field is much more mysterious than I thought. I just took a peek, and was lucky enough to be taught a lesson during summer time. I will always remember this special experience in my life, for the first time getting so close to the edge of life and death.

86ed Chris I was late. Things happened without any sign, and we were all quite off guard. I explained to everybody that my schedule was tight, and I was literally beyond reach at the time, but they couldn’t care less about it. In their opinion, my to-do list was nothing more than a Christmas wishing list. I hate to attend the family reunion. I was late for four days. Three days later, they were going to burn grandma The first thing that caught my eyes was the two enormous roles of flowers piling up in front of the doorway. You could barely call them two lines, but more like a greenish dead end. Mom didn’t want any gift from friends and relatives, for there were no any kinds of gift in return that was satisfying enough. Flowers became the only option to show respect, so that’s the reason why the scale of the flower jungle was two or three times bigger than usual. The jungle mostly consisted of lilies, dyed cosmoses and bellflowers. The air was filled with scents of lilies and wet leaves, which was surprisingly relaxing for my poor nerve. My duties were quite simple - watering the flower jungle and picking the stamens of the blooming lilies. My brother gave me two bottles with the tops removed. “The adults are already unhappy about you being late,” he said, “so you’d better not let them see you doing nothing.” It was like a play. I shall act like an adorable child that did whatever that pleased the adults, and they pretended to be satisfied. The pollens would make the white petals look nasty, so it was crucial to remove stamens as soon as the flowers were bloomed. Sometimes I deliberately scattered some pollens on the pistils, in hopes of bringing some joy of life into this gloomy swamp.

FLL∞D Autumn 2015

Every day after lunch, monks came to the mourning hall for scripture chanting. It was the toughest time in the whole day, for it was the time when I used to take a nap. The scriptures were like ancient Chinese, and it caused me trouble even to read them out loud. My aunts told me to chant more heartedly. They thought I was under some kinds of non-corporation movement. However, the only thing I was resisting to was not religion, but my own eyelids. I couldn’t help but admit that I found several parts of the mourning amusing, such as monks’ scripture chanting. Owing to some religious issue, which I was not familiar with, certain scriptures must be chanted for certain times each day. That is to say, the faster

our chanting tempo was, the sooner I could officially fall asleep. One of the monks chanted like a rapper, consuming a half page of scripture in a single breath; normally they were like a typewriter, pronouncing every character clearly and separately; a few of them were like, with no offensive intention, a poor video player. You never knew when it was going to freeze and buffer again. There were also many mourning customs, which I had never been taught before, coming to me, such as coffin sealing, pot breaking, filial clothing and continuous joss paper burning. There were tons of taboos and ceremonies associated with a family member passing away, which did drain a lot of energy, and was quite overwhelming for a pagan like me. I never thought I could be that thrilled and comforted to bump into a cross-shaped object. However, because of the mourning ceremony, the fragments of the family were glued back together once again, and the members once again got a reason to spend time with one another. Death takes away life, but also reminds people of the connection of family “Funerals are for those who were left behind,” quoted from one of my be-

loved novels. Tears shedding, voice trembling, we lined up at the very front of the hall, and watched everyone come forth and do whatever the convention required. My big aunt cried when giving her eulogy, which was interrupted by sobbing for three times. However, no matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t juice a drop of tear or any pathos from my mind. I had no affection to this family. I had nowhere to root. I felt guilty. I was a poisonous fruit.

FLL∞D Autumn 2015 My brother stood at the very front of the

line. He was acting rather active than usual these days. He greeted every relative; he was the one holding grandma’s photo; he was the one that did all the kneeling that my father was supposed to do. He was trying to be as filial a son as possible, out of a sense of responsibility. My father, on the other hand, showed little emotion. He seldom expressed his feelings. He was the one that informed me of grandma’s death. The voice was so peaceful and so calm. I was almost convinced that the phone call was nothing but a normal how do you do. His eyes were neither swollen nor red, and his face remained motionless during the whole ceremony. To this day, I still do not know what he feels towards grandma. I wondered how each of our family members saw this family. I saw their efforts

putting this ceremony together, but out of what? To be frank, grandma’s death barely affected my life. With words that could hardly put forth, I knew my life would never be the same. I couldn’t shed even a single drop of tear for her, which once again did cause me trouble. I couldn’t say that I need her badly in my life, nor how frequently do I think about her. However deep inside my heart, there’s always be a selfish and irresponsible wish that grandma, sound and pleasant, will always be right there whenever I think of her. Every once in a while, I would inadvertently recall my grandma, and my heart ached a bit for it.

FLL∞D Autumn 2015

Coordinator’s interview Q: What does “graduation performance” mean for the Department of Foreign Languages and Literature? A: It shows the comprehensive results of the course. Although this course is not mandatory, most of the students in our department will take this course. Besides, the performance is a great tradition of the Department of Foreign Languages and Literature. Compared to other activities of our department, the performance always receives positive evaluation and brings good reputation to the college. As a result, it is worthwhile to continue this tradition in our department. The opinion on CCU Complaints(靠北中正) The complaints are due to a controversy over the use of the small theater in College of Humanities. We have confirmed that the small theater is within the jurisdiction of the Department of Foreign Languages and Literature. Thus, if the students of other departments need a place for rehearsals, they can apply for the brand new theater of the Humanity College.

Q: What is your motive to be a coordinator of the graduation performance ? A: I like the performances very much. I have participated in this since I was a freshman. Each year, I participated in a new different group, and learned a lot from joining various kinds of activities during these four years. I believe I can be a good coordinator due to my ability and experiences, so I volunteered to be the coordinator of the graduation performance. I also want to thanks for the support of my classmates to let me lead the team together with the

director. Q: What is the difficulty that must be overcome in the preparatory period? A: In the beginning, the College of Humanities didn’t give us any grants, so a tight budget is a big problem for us. Many things that need to be discussed among the groups of our graduation performance are based on the shortage of money, so this problem causes a lot of extra troubles. So far, we are still applying for the grant from the Literature College and applied funds.

FLL∞D Autumn 2015

Q: Have you ever thought of quitting when you were under high pressure? A: In the beginning of the preparation for the performance, we didn’t see any achievement. At that time, it was difficult for me to persist in being a coordinator, and I even felt a little regretful to be one. But when I discussed my disappointment with the director, both of us agreed that, although we encountered many setbacks as we put many efforts during the preparation, we would be able to overcome them. So far, we gradually harvest the results of the efforts before. Q: What has changed before starting the preparation of the performance and after exactly executing the plans that you managed before? A: In the beginning, I hoped that I could do something innovative and different with the team of the performance. But when every group of the team started to execute the plans, we found some problems which made it hard to realize my ideals. So I had no alternative but to give up. But we still tried our best to put our own characteristics into the performance. Q: What did you receive in the process of preparing the performance? A: In addition to a sense of achievement, I also gained two more things. The first one was patience, and the other was the sensation of feeling moved. I gained patience because the performance is the longest activity in the Foreign Languages and Literature Department. We had to bear that we could not receive results in the beginning, and that we would encounter many difficulties, and we must make many efforts to overcome the hardships and keep going. I also needed to care about each member’s situation and standpoint. When there was a need to discuss the situation, I had to communicate with them with great patience. But I was moved by the moments when we encouraged each other and said "Thanks for the hard work" after finishing the practice.

Director’s interview

FLL∞D Autumn 2015

Q: Why did you choose this theme (play script)? Was there any special motivation for your team to choose it? A: Actually, we were at our loss when it came to choosing the script since we needed to search and read a great quantity of plays on our own, elected the one that was the most suitable for presentation, and then let other team members vote. This time, not only Lady Windermere’s Fan was being nominated, but also many Oscar Wild’s works were taken into consideration. However, after the vote we still chose Lady Windermere’s Fan. I myself like this play better because the story is about family, the relation between mother and daughter and misunderstanding, and I think it is the WORK that can be perfectly presented.

Q: Why do you think that the family love could attract the audience? To me, it is very attractive. To the audience, it is an ironic comedy and it is easier to arouse their resonance. A: At fir st, I was consider ing whether to choose a tr agedy or a comedy. However , I figur ed out that once the comedy is complemented by the subtitle, it is much funnier for the audience. Comedies resonate with the audience more easily, and make the entire auditorium bursts into joyous laughter. Q: What was the most difficult thing your team met when the team was preparing for the drama? A: When picking actors and actresses, I once hesitated to decide because some of them performed well at every role. Then professor advised that I could try to combine their appearances and sounds to those figures to find out the most suitable roles for them. And another difficulty is in our rehearsal, actors would have their personal feelings. So I had to pay attention to that and played the role of communicating and coordinating carefully. Q: If you have to talk something strict, how do you do? A: I will talk to everybody first, and then I will explain to that person privately about what I think about, if my words are too harsh, I will apologize to him or

her.

Q: During the rehearsal, what was the most impressive part for you during the practice time? Why? A: I think that is per formance tr aining. Performers are required to make an improvisation or play some games in order to arouse their performance potential. I felt very interested when I watched them. All rights reserved. FLL∞D Autumn 2015 Q: During the rehearsal, what was the most difficult part for you to

overcome? A: At beginning, actors and actresses didn’t aware that they are actually performers. Thus, sometimes they would be lazy in the early preparation. But when the new semester started, everybody’s attitude became more and more positive and responsible. Moreover, they also do well on their duties.

Q: During the rehearsal, which part of the drama was your favorite? Why? A: When Lord Darlington expressed his love to Lady Windermere is my

favorite part. If actor and actress can perform their feelings and emotion properly, the scene will be very touching. Q: What do you want to obtain from the performance? A: I think that is the sense of accomplishment.

Q: Why do you want to be the director? A: I myself tend to be bossy, fancying taking control of what happens in performance. I experienced being an Assistant to Director and a photographer once, and I felt that being a director is imposing. As for drama, everyone will respect what I want to present. I can direct actors and actresses as well. Besides, I have been interested in films and dramas. Motivated as I am, I am willing to be the director.

o Director: When you are a member of the graduation performance, you will feel moved although you are not an actor or actress on the stage. You will also feel happy and satisfied after the performance ends. In sum, you will enjoy the moment when you participate in the preparation of the graduation performance.

Coordinator: One year, when I was in the subtitle group of the graduation performance, the actors and actresses didn’t miss any word of the scripts. At that time, I got goosebumps because they showed their efforts to the audience. I think this activity is a very meaningful event for the students in our department to join, so I hope juniors can join together and enjoy the touching moments.
