2020 Gratitude Report

G R AT I T U D E R E P O R T

Dear CCV Donors and Friends, As many of you know, CCV marked its 50th anniversary in 2020. Anticipating a year of reminiscence and reconnection, we kicked off our celebrations in January with “CCV Day” at the Vermont State House. Sadly, with so much overshadowing this milestone year, our remaining 50th anniversary plans were cancelled.

The Community College of Vermont supports and challenges all students in meeting their educational goals through an abiding commitment to access, affordability, and student success.

But even in the darkest moments, hope and inspiration are abundant in the gifts and support we receive from donors like you. The McClure Grad Gift, Life Gap Grants, and the Flex program featured here are examples of how your incredible generosity makes a difference for CCV students. Not only do you provide crucial funding for student programs and aid, but you often become partners who push us to innovate and improve. We are grateful for your loyal support and your shared belief in the work we do. As you read our Gratitude Report, keep this in mind. Think about the many CCV students you have impacted this year. You are changing lives. We hope you feel as proud as we do about the tremendous progress we’ve made together. In 2021, we know you are with us as we help Vermonters prepare for a better future. For all you do, thank you. With gratitude,

Joyce Judy, President

CCV 2020 Donor Gratitude Report

Aimee Stephenson, Director of Resource Development

SHRISTI RAI

AN UNPRECEDENTED MOVE TO INSPIRE STUDENTS

So much fell away for the graduating class of Vermont’s high schools as the pandemic took over our lives this year. We made a leap of faith on behalf of these young people to give the gift of a step forward — a free course of their own choice, close to home.

The McClure Gift Amidst the fallout of the coronavirus pandemic, the J. Warren and Lois McClure Foundation gave every student in the Vermont high school class of 2020 a graduation gift:

One free course of their choosing at CCV.

During a time of great uncertainty, this gift was the McClure Foundation’s way of saying: we believe in you and are invested in you. As our hope for the future, you deserve something you can count on. As our most trusted and long-standing philanthropic partner, the McClure Foundation has contributed over $2.6 million and countless hours to CCV while serving as both a source of inspiration and innovation these past 10 years.

— Barbara Benedict, President, The J. Warren and Lois McClure Foundation

We are eternally grateful for their generous support!

Age: 17 Winooski High School graduate, 2020 CCV, Early College completion, 2020 Shristi’s ambitious plans to become an emergency room doctor, starting with an associate degree from CCV by summer 2021, were almost derailed when her mother was detained in India due to COVID-19 travel restrictions. Unable to complete her application for federal financial aid, Shristi thought she might be forced to take a break from school.

Life Gap is funded solely through philanthropic donations. We are so grateful to Bari and Peter Dreissigacker, Bill and Kate Schubart, Twincraft Skincare, The Alchemist Foundation, Vermont Community Foundation, People’s United Bank, and many others, who gave $190,000 this past year to help CCV students achieve their educational goals.

Life Gap Grants In 2017, CCV established the Life Gap Fund with a large gift from private donors. Whether it’s the internet bill, new tires to pass inspection, or simply an expensive textbook, Life Gap Grants help students overcome financial hurdles that get in the way of school. As we moved 529 courses from on-ground to online this spring, CCV’s Life Gap Grants provided emergency funding to help students overcome challenges and continue their education.

Since its inception, Life Gap has helped 1,525 students stay in school.

LAURA DAILEY

Life Gap Grant Recipient Age: 40 CCV, A.S. Accounting, 2020 Laura came back to college to finish her associate degree after several years away. While attending CCV, she had multiple part-time work study roles. One night after work her vehicle broke down, leaving Laura unsure how she could continue both work and school without transportation. Thanks to a Life Gap Grant, her vehicle was fixed, and she was able to continue toward her goals. In November 2020, Laura was hired full-time as part of CCV’s Northern Lights program.

“College has opened doors for me to a better life, and my journey has and will continue to inspire others around me.”

Creating the Flexibility Students Need

Age: 21 BFA Fairfax graduate, 2018 CCV, A.A. Liberal Studies, anticipated graduation 2021

Kael is passionate about politics and art. He is his family’s go-to person when it comes to troubleshooting tech, and one day he hopes to have a career in computer science. Kael had this to say about the Flex course he took:

With funding from the J. Warren and Lois McClure Foundation, CCV developed digital credentials and Flex courses in response to Vermont’s rapidly changing workforce needs. Students like Kael have the freedom to enroll in Flex courses throughout the first half of the semester and then work at their own pace toward completion. CCV’s Flex courses also offered the perfect solution for unemployed Vermonters wanting to pivot to a new career when the State provided Coronavirus Relief Funds for free training in November.

This past year, the Northfield Savings Bank (NSB) Foundation awarded a two-year grant to hire a dedicated staff member for Flex programming. CCV is so grateful for the contributions of philanthropic partners like the McClure and NSB Foundations who provide both resources and guidance to help us innovate in ways that would not be otherwise possible.

By increasing access to education, the Flex program increases opportunity for Vermont’s unemployed and underemployed. Administering these critical classes at a reasonable cost benefits not only the student’s personal and professional growth, but local businesses and industries, and ultimately, Vermont’s economy. The Northfield Savings Bank Foundation is proud to support this pivotal program, and we look forward to seeing the results of our investment for years to come. – Yael Friedman, President and Chair of the Northfield Savings Bank Foundation Board of Directors

On behalf of everyone at CCV, especially our students who are deeply impacted by your generosity:

CCV 2020 Donor Gratitude Report

CCV ALUMNI

Giving to the Community College of Vermont has become the portal through which I can share my passion for education. My parents instilled in me an understanding of the values found in learning and in service. Education is a gift no one can take from us and each course benefits everyone we encounter in the world.

I love CCV. Every time I walk into the building in Winooski I feel proud to be part of a community that is warm, welcoming, and nurturing. For many it is the first step on the road to higher education. I am honored to be able to give back and help provide others with the opportunities I was blessed with.

CCV was there for me when all I needed was an open door to new possibilities. I contribute to CCV to help ensure that door is always open to all Vermonters.
