BUILDING BRIDGES
Hope, Promise, and Philanthropy
Dear CCV Donors and Friends,
After many months of distance and separation, 2022 was a year of connection. At CCV, we held commencement in person for the first time since 2019; we gathered to recognize faculty and staff at fall semester events; and students, faculty, and staff worked side-by-side through a yearlong process to renew our accreditation from the New England Commission of Higher Education.
We also made huge strides in connecting more Vermonters to education and training. In this report, we celebrate the CCV donors and philanthropic partners who support our mission of access, affordability, and student success. Whether it’s an endowed scholarship, the McClure Free Degree Promise, or a much-needed Life Gap Grant, CCV donors are ‘building bridges’ to a college education. These bridges represent our shared belief in the power of education to transform lives and strengthen communities.
With your support, we are helping Vermonters invest in themselves and prepare for their next steps. Together, we create a more hopeful, promising future. I want to thank you for being part of the CCV community and for all of your bridge-building efforts.
With gratitude,
Joyce Judy, President
Our Mission
The Community College of Vermont supports and challenges all students in meeting their educational goals through an abiding commitment to access, affordability, and student success.
2022 GRATITUDE REPORT
‘It Starts at CCV’: Life Gap Grants Support Students and Vermont
Dylan Giambatista is a bridge-builder. A former member of the Vermont house of representatives, current director of public affairs for a Vermont utility, and all-around champion of the Green Mountain State, he says “my work in Vermont is really about finding ways to bridge divides that are in our communities.” Giambatista is also a 2010 graduate of CCV, an experience he says helped launch his career in public service. “That work has continued, and it actually has its seeds at the Community College of Vermont.”
A proud alumnus, he describes himself as a nontraditional student. “Like so many CCV students, I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do, what I wanted to be,” he said. “I dropped out of high school. I faced some tough times as a teenager.” He eventually earned a GED and found his way to CCV-Rutland.

At CCV, formal education clicked. “It was really the small classroom, the one-on-one instruction, and also the comfort with not being judged for what you have or what you don’t have when you walk in here...The doors were always open. The teachers, the staff, the faculty, the students were all there to welcome me. And that allowed me to plug in when I was ready.”
Dylan Giambatista A PROUD ALUMNI DONOR
With an awareness of the challenges many Vermonters face when pursuing higher education—especially in the aftermath of a pandemic — Dylan supports the College’s Life Gap Fund. Created in 2017 with generous funding from a private donor, Life Gap Grants are small, just-in-time scholarships designed to help students through challenging, unexpected situations that might otherwise disrupt their education: a computer repair, a flat tire, a surprise medical expense.
Giambatista knows firsthand that this kind of support is critical. “You don’t always know where life’s gonna take you. As events play out, you might take a u-turn, you might even hit a wall,” Giambatista says. “[CCV] opened up doors, and it helped me be successful as I advanced in my career.” Now, he wants to pay it forward.
“When I look around in Vermont, there are so many worthy causes and great folks doing great things. But the Community College of Vermont, I know from personal experience, was there for me when I needed it, is there for so many when they need it, and this is really the critical access point for so many learners in our state who might be looking for skills, might be looking for a job. It starts at CCV. For me, being part of that, helping support those initiatives as best I can, it’s just something I have to do. I’m here for the long haul and I hope others will join me.”
Life Gap Grants are one essential piece of the Life Gap Plus initiative, which aims to provide greater visibility of and access to a myriad of resources for students facing basic needs insecurities.

“The Life Gap Grant I received was incredibly helpful. I needed a $900 brake job on my car, and I was taking 19 credits at CCV at the time as well. With a two-year-old and being the only one working in my household, the $300 Life Gap Grant I received took a load off my shoulders. I really, really appreciate the help!”

Karen Geiger: A Legacy
Karen Geiger grew up in Vermont, attending school in Essex Junction before joining the workforce. When she was 28, Karen decided it was time to go back to school, and she earned her associate degree in liberal studies at CCV. “It was only after she went to CCV that she started to get serious about her future,” said her father, Bill Geiger. The College helped prepare her to continue her education at UVM, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in fine art.
Karen started working at CCV in 2007, just seven years after her graduation from the College. One of her many roles was in development as an administrative assistant. Susan Henry, then executive dean of the College, was Karen’s supervisor. “Karen was very extroverted and very fun-loving,” Susan said. “She always wanted to take on more responsibility; she was always looking to have more of an impact.”
As part of her work in development, Karen had a strong interest in helping raise money for scholarships. “We didn’t raise money for CCV, we raised money for students. And that fit with Karen’s value system very well,” Susan said. Read the full story behind this scholarship at ccv.edu/Karen

THE KAREN M. GEIGER SCHOLARSHIP
In 2019 Karen was diagnosed with cancer, and she passed away on February 26, 2022. Before she passed, Karen and her father worked closely with CCV to continue her legacy in two distinct ways: a scholarship in her name and a commissioned painting.
The Karen M. Geiger Scholarship is an endowment established at CCV in 2022 in honor of Karen, made possible by a generous gift of $25,000 from her father along with several other donations from friends and former colleagues. This scholarship will be awarded annually to students who demonstrate financial need, preferably in the liberal studies degree program. Bill recognizes the value of education and that not every college student has financial support to attend, and he wants Karen’s passion for helping others to continue in a meaningful way. “Her scholarship will not pay the full price for admission,” Bill said, “but it will help somebody who needs it. That person is then somebody who Karen has helped.”
Named endowments may be established with a minimum gift of $25,000 and donors become members of The Legacy Society, which also honors the generosity of donors who make bequests and planned gifts.

We are so grateful for this scholarship. CCV helped transform Karen’s life and now her legacy will transform students’ lives.

For Young Students, the McClure Free Degree Promise Is a Gift
In early 2022, the J. Warren & Lois McClure Foundation announced the Free Degree Promise through the Early College program at CCV. Vermont’s Early College program allows high school seniors to complete their last year of high school and their first year of college at the same time, tuition-free. The Free Degree Promise builds on Early College to give students who continue at CCV the chance to earn an associate degree at no cost.
The program is opening doors for students across the state: last fall, CCV enrolled its largest Early College cohort yet, including greater numbers of low-income, first-generation, and BIPOC students.
Words cannot adequately express our gratitude to the McClure Foundation for this generous gift that will forever change the lives of CCV students, like the ones featured here, for years to come.
Dalya Almogalli: Prepared for My Next Steps
When Dalya found out about the McClure Free Degree Promise program from her advisor, she knew she wanted to sign up. “I’m going to college for free, getting a free degree, and taking some of the nursing-required classes so when I transfer my credits it’s already done. That’s an opportunity I cannot waste.” Dalya’s goal, after her second year at CCV, is to enroll in the nursing program at UVM.

Aiden Robertson: Ahead of the Game
Aiden always planned on going to college after high school, and he’s excited to finally be diving in. “Doing this was like ‘all right, it’s right now, it’s no longer in the future. I get to jump right into college.” “For Aiden, the McClure Free Degree Promise is a no-brainer, and he thinks it is for others too. “I feel like those two free years could definitely change a lot of people’s lives, especially if they wanted to go to college but they just couldn’t afford it.”

McKinley Pfaff: A Chance to Explore
McKinley is using the McClure Free Degree Promise to finish her health science degree, and she hopes to transfer to the radiology program at Vermont Tech. Simply put, McKinley sees a college education as a ticket to job security. “I enjoy going to work more than anything,” she says. “Getting past the school part and into the workforce is really my motivation…I stuck with the college route because I think it will help me get a job wherever I go.”

Morgan Predom: The Best Future Possible
A single mother of an 18-month-old son, Morgan is determined to complete her college degree, despite the pressures of juggling work, school, and parenting. “I have always felt like I’ve needed to go to college,” she says. When she found out about the opportunity to finish her degree for free, “I was so happy, because having a free year of Early College was great, I didn’t have to pay for it while also having to pay for a baby. And then I found out my second year was gonna be free…it made me so happy I started crying.”

Why They Give
CCV FACULTY
“After nineteen years instructing at the Community College of Vermont, I can attest to the amazing results that come from a degree at CCV. I have seen community colleges go from being a fallback choice, to “the” choice of students. I will happily put my money where it works!”
— Melissa Elwell-Holmes
CCV STAFF
CCV ALUMNUS
“I had a great time at CCV. Some courses led me to lifelong interests in archaeology and science. I want to help others along the way and have the same opportunities I was fortunate enough to have.”
— Hubey Folsom ’93
“My husband Mark and I give to CCV because we value learning for anyone who wants it. CCV doesn’t require people to have money or grades or certain standardized test scores. Instead, they need only the courage to ask questions, the motivation to take the next step, and the determination to learn, practice, and grow. Having earned our degrees along a path that included community college, we feel it is our responsibility to give back.”
