PORTFOLIO OF CREATIVE WORKS
STATEMENT
CHRISTOPHER D. DEHAAN M. Arch I Candidate
Architecture takes on a different meaning for every person who studies and practices it. It can be an art form, a science, a hobby, a career, and an obsession. In my mind, it is the only field that truly combines artistry, engineering, politics, and anthropology - it is the renaissance profession. This portfolio is a collection of my most representative design work to date. I am confident you will see that I have the creative potential and visual aesthetic to be a successful Master of Architecture student.
Thank you for your consideration.

DRAWINGS
These drawings were created for my ART 101 Introduction to Drawing class and ARCH 121 Design Studio. Each drawing took several hours to compose and render. They explore light, cast and form shadow, and revealing form. I prefer to use charcoal because it is a versatile medium, revealing light with white charcoal and defining shadow with black charcoal on any background.

WOODWORK
This project was created for my ARCH 105 Woodshop class. A study in abstract design, this box is comprised of more than 25 separate pieces of black walnut and alder wood. I choose my design carefully to show off the unique grain of the wood. This project was especially difficult given the challenge of imposing an abstract design on an organic and unforgiving material.

STUDIO WORK
The following projects were created for my Architecture 121 design studio under Professor L. JoAnn Grover. They explore graphic design concepts and the visual interpretation of ideas into designs. Each project experiments with visual hierarchy, page layout, and graphic context. The following work represents my most Architecturallyrelevant design work in college.

Memorial Model, 2008. Drafting pen, colored pencil, bass wood, and wire on presentation board. 8 x 9 x 9 in. A 3-dimensional extension of the design board to the right.
“The idea of this memorial is not to simply immortalize the fear and destruction that the San Diego wildfires caused, but rather to focus on the values of community and collaboration that defined the recovery process afterward. This design is based on two verbal concepts: destruction and community. Instead of using a statue of a firefighter to commemorate the recovery effort, this memorial focuses on the conflict and visual relationship between the concepts of destruction and community. Destruction is depicted by a series of useless fragments and shards. Community is embodied by a collection of intertwining and symbiotic ribbons. In the three-dimensional form, these ribbons of community wrap and collect the shards as if to visualize the process of community coming together to pick up the pieces after the wildfire. -Design Perpose Statement, ARCH 121

PHOTOGRAPHY
Photography is more than just the visual collection of travels and experiences. My photographic style is the result of an experimentation with negative space mixed with an eye for visual drama. The resulting pictures of my efforts are often emotive and full of contrast. All of my photography is freelance and edited minimally using Adobe Photoshop. Enjoy!
