Do we really need to understand mental health? {hint: yes, we do} 6
What defines “mental health?
On average, there are about 4 patients per mental health provider Over 44 million American adults have a mental health condition
In 2015, 62% of youth with a Major Depressive Episode (MDE) received no treatment
Mental Health can be described as a person’s well-being both psychologically and emotionally. According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, one in five adults will experience some form of mental illness each year. Mental health is not limited to medically diagnosed disorders. Mental health could mean our choices, the way we manage stress or even our relaxation habits.
What is the stigma around mental health? Unfortunately, the taboo surrounding mental health in general causes a tremendous amount of apprehension when considering acknowledgement. The media labels such individuals as crazy or dangerous. Many jobs, schools and social clubs will discriminate against individuals with certain disorders; prohibiting them from living fulfilling lives. Anxiety is the most prevalent disorder and it affects over 18.1% of the population. Over 6.8 million adults suffer from GAD or Generalized Anxiety Disorder while only 43.2% are receiving treatment.

Mental health is a person’s condition with regards to their psychological and emotional well-being. Mental health conditions are common among teens and young adults. 1 in 5 live with a mental health condition. For some, experiencing the first signs can be scary and confusing. Discussing what you are going through with others is an important first step to getting help. Speaking up and asking for help is a sign of strength. It’s amazing the support you get simply by asking. Researchers are only starting to understand why these conditions develop, however, you have the power to take action to improve your mental health. Some of the factors that affect mental health include, physical activity, smoking, diet, relaxation techniques, relationships, and many more, therefore it is understandable how so many people struggle with maintaining their mental health. For our project we are focusing on ways to generate conversations between people about mental health, helping people become more comfortable communicating about what they are going through, informing those who do not understand mental health, and helping people build support systems with the people around them.
The definition of a stigma is, “a mark of disgrace associated with a particular circumstance, quality, or person. Mental health problems can be hard for anyone to cope with but it can become worse by having to deal with stigma and discrimination from others. So many people do not seek support due to the stigma they expect to face and the self stigma of feeling a burden. No one should ever be made to feel ashamed or embarrassed to tell anyone that they experience mental health problems. The more we talk about mental health and the more we’re open about it, the stigma will get smaller and smaller and before we know it, it will be normal for people to talk about mental health and illness. This will make it so much easier for them to get the help they need.
Perceived Barriers to Seeking Help for Mental Health

Adolescents and young adults frequently experience mental disorders, yet tend not to seek help. Studies show negative attitudes towards seeking help generally, as well as, concerns about cost, transportation or inconvenience, confidentiality, other people finding out, feeling like they can handle the problem on their own are all barriers to young people seeking help for mental health conditions. The results of the study show stigma and embarrassment about seeking help emerged in both the qualitative and quantitative studies as the most prominent barrier to helpseeking for mental health problems. Upon learning about the barriers that prevent people from seeking help about their mental health we were able to better understand how we can design taking them into account. We structured our project to cater to people who may not be comfortable enough to talk about their mental health and help them get to the point of breaking those barriers.
Together as individuals we need to have the strength to challenge anyone who fails to treat someone with a mental health problem with respect, dignity, and as an equal. Often the people who act inappropriately may not mean to cause harm and are ignorant of the negative impact of their actions. Our organization’s mission is to inform these people of the effect of their actions and words as well as help them better understand mental health. This behavior is increasingly not tolerated in society as awareness and better understanding about the subject continues to spread, however, phrases and words like, ‘pull yourself together’ or ‘there are people worse off than you’ can hurt and affect those battling mental ill health.
Currently only about one-third of people with mental health difficulties obtain help. While there are many reasons for this, practical factors such as availability of health professionals and travel. Time and financial restrictions may limit access to mental health care. While technology is not always a replacement for face-to-face treatment for mental health difficulties, it can offer increased choices and flexibility. It may also motivate some people to take the first step towards seeking help. Digital mental health services offer more choices and greater flexibility in how people seek help. Some people are uncomfortable opening up to a health professional in person; they prefer the anonymity of online assistance. A number of online services are freely available online and there are not added travel costs. For some people, especially those in remote areas, no other mental health services are accessible to them. There is strong evidence that psychological therapy, particularly cognitive behavior therapy, can be effectively delivered online to treat a range of mental health difficulties. In some research trials, online therapy has been found to be as effective in reducing symptoms as therapy in-person therapy sessions. Evidence is particularly strong that anxiety, stress, and depression can be treated online.

Brand Guidelines Colors Primary
RealTalk’s primary brand colors are the red and blue pantones displayed. The logo must appear in one of the following RealTalk colors listed. If the background color is one of the colors in our palatte the logo must be in white. If white is a background color any of our colors can be the color of the logo, as long as there is adequate contrast between the two. We wanted our colors to be welcoming and friendly so that people would feel more comfortable. Our colors are not too playful that people don’t take our brand seriously, which is also important to us. Our primary color red is representative of light hearted and uplifting topics, whereas the blue is representative of the more serious topic. Our use of gradients represents how mental health is not straight forward or precise. Everyone suffers from some form of stress, anger, anxiety, etc. and our goal is to normalize mental health and change connotations around it.

Brave Blue
RealTalk’s image treatent utilizes our brand gradient which is a combination of our two primary colors. The images are two toned with our brand colors to create unity throughout our touchpoints. To further communicate our brand identity we have used the speech bubble icon, which is a part of our logo, in our images to create contrast due to the sharpness of the vector against the softness of the gradient. We have used other vector shapes as well as background elements to contrast the images.

Public Exhibit
Intro The interactive exhibit will travel to cities around the country in order to reach a wide variety of people. Each city will prompt people for their input, using phrases such as “Today I feel.... The usergenerated responses will be displayed at random on the exterior wall surrounding the input areas.
36
37
RealTalk Branding, Service, & Interaction Design
Public Exhibit Participation In order to participate, users walk into the frosted plexiglass structure and approach a stand where they can write their response. The exhibit uses a special pen that gathers and digitalizes the users hand-writing and sends it to the projectors outside. Once users are done, they can take the paper that they wrote on with them so that they have a reminder of what they wrote.
Materiality The exhibit exterior is made of frosted plexiglass panels, so that it can easily be taken down and transported in pieces. User responses are projected onto the panels and change over time.
38
Technology In order to allow people to have a takeaway, and to add convenience, we chose to implement smart pens which gather users handwriting and sends a scanned copy to the projectors on the opposite side of the dividing wall. The pens are relatively low cost and maintenence, and mimic the look and feel of traditional writing utensils. Short throw projectors placed on the ground cast users written input onto the semi transparent dividing wall. The technology used can easily be packaged and transported from location to location.

The grassroots marketing can reach people who might not be willing to discuss mental health with an entity, but are comfortable communicating with a friend. On the other hand, because our entity is a nonprofit merchandise can be a valuable way to earn money in order to run and maintain the organization and all of its endeavors.
