Kelly, on the other hand, had more of a flair for the dramatic. After earning the third seed with a 2-under 142 in stroke play, he also earned a 6-and-5 win in the first round, besting Kevin Ackford. proved to be Kelly’s kryptonite, as Burge birdied the 15th, 16th and 18th holes—the last with a 35-foot snake—to square the match at halftime. When play resumed in the afternoon, Burge carried that momentum, winning the 19th hole after a Kelly bogey to take his first lead of the day. Kelly would punch back on the 20th hole of 96th CDGA Amateur Championship

the day, putting his drive on the 311-yard second to 15 feet on the front edge, then chipping to 2 feet to earn a birdie. Burge would restart the seesaw battle by putting a masterful backspin on his tee shot at the 172yard fourth hole, leaving his tee shot 2 feet from the pin for an easy birdie and 1-up lead after 22 holes. From there, Burge would never trail again, with Kelly only squaring the match at times, including an impressive 30-foot birdie at the 10th hole. The match was all square on the 15th tee, but Burge surged to the lead with a 20-foot birdie on the 400-yard par-4. On the 16th, Kelly’s tee shot was lost in the trees to the right of the fairway, allowing Burge to play to a conservative par and go dormie through 34 holes.

A golf tournament and a rock concert couldn’t be more different scenes.

One, quiet and serene on sprawling acres of nature. The other, deafening and crowded at indoor venues. Chicago’s Cully Johnston feels perfectly at home in both. Johnston is a rarity in that he excels at both of the conflicting disciplines. The 35-year-old reached the quarterfinals of this week’s CDGA Amateur Championship at Knollwood Club, totaling a 1-over par 145 in 36 holes of stroke play qualifying before besting Matt Weber in Round of 16 action. He also plays guitar in the local indie rock band Sequoia and spent about eight years in the music industry full-time. Golf, though, was Johnston’s first love. “I’ve been playing golf since literally before I could walk,” Johnston said after his CDGA Am quarterfinal defeat at the hands of Raymond Knoll. “My dad got me started really young. I’d step up, hit the ball, and fall down on my diaper because I couldn’t walk.”

A native of the Washington D.C. area, Johnston excelled at golf throughout high school. Simultaneously, his passion for music deepened at the age of 16 when he switched from drums to guitar. When it came time to go to college at Florida State and focus on one as a potential career, Johnston chose music, moving to Chicago in 2001. “It was a music scene thing,” Johnston said of his decision to move to Chicago. “I’m really a big fan of the Midwest noise rock and indie rock scene. “This was the epicenter of the kind of music I was interested in, which was big-guitar-based noisy math rock type stuff.” Johnston spent time in various bands and enjoyed his stint as a full-time musician. commitment to the game. “That was mind-blowing,” Johnston said. “It showed me I have a lot of work still to do, because they set that course up really difficult. To get into match play there is my next goal. I kind of wanted to just take in that whole experience and not put a huge amount of pressure on myself to get into match play, but rather just learn what it takes.”

In addition to golf, Cully Johnston excels at playing guitar in the rock band Sequoia. Click above to visit the band’s website.

Even with his full-time job and burgeoning amateur golf career, Johnston still finds time to strum his guitar. His four-person band practices about once a week, and is putting the finishing touches on their second album, which will be released on vinyl in the coming months.

Johnston secured a full-time position as the box office manager at Second City in Chicago. His night and weekend hours allowed the time for Johnston to re-discover his first passion: golf.

Johnston’s main goal when returning to golf was to qualify for a USGA event, which it took him just four attempts to accomplish.
