WELCOME LETTER
WELCOME W
elcome, rodeo fans, to the 2020 Volume 1 edition of American Buckle Magazine. Just as the rodeo season began, it quickly came to a halt. For many athletes, this was their year to climb to the top of one of America’s most competitive sports. For others who suffered early-season injuries, this was an unexpected break that allows them to return as worthy challengers. Rapidly-growing rodeo organizations offering record payouts to winning athletes in a booming economy suddenly found themselves facing unprecedented times amid empty arenas. COVID-19 became the center of attention and focus of everyone worldwide. However, cowboys and cowgirls never quit! In this edition, we cover how the rodeo industry has been affected and why our sport has the greatest resilience, fans, and chances for a quick recovery. We head north to oil-rich Williston, North Dakota, where Marquis Metal Works founder Ben Marquis is on a mission to make the Williston PBR Touring Pro Division event one of the top stops on tour. Attracting some of the biggest PBR riders with even bigger payouts, this event has it all — including a firework celebration of epic proportions. Be sure and check out our interview with rising PBR star Dylan Smith. As one of the youngest competitors in the PBR, Dylan tells us where his rodeo roots began and how he’s quickly climbed the PBR ranks, amazed to find himself alongside his heroes at the 2019 PBR World Finals. Finally, we revisit the ten-day 2019 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. This Las Vegas event never disappoints as athletes lay it all on the line. From bull riding, team roping, barrel racing, steer wrestling, bareback, saddle bronc, and tie-down, we relive each winning performance including “Top Photo Shots” from this memorable event. We here at American Buckle Magazine want to personally thank our sponsors and fans for their unwavering support. A special thank you to all who worked on this project including our writers, graphic designers, photographers, and account executives. Lastly, I want to dedicate this edition to my late mother, Arline Dize, who passed away in March 2020. You are forever in my heart and I will always love you! hough it feels like it’s been a lifetime since news outlets began reporting on the emergence of COVID-19, it was only a few short months ago that the pandemic began to take its toll on the US. Americans’ lives changed suddenly and dramatically. Thousands of people across the country fell ill, and many found themselves mourning the passing of their loved ones. Meanwhile, shutdowns, shelter-in-place orders and social distancing guidelines became a reality of daily life.

Like many American industries, the rodeo business suffered amid the economic turmoil. Social distancing meant crowds could no longer gather to support their favorite cowboys. Both the PRCA and the PBR made the tough call to cancel or postpone events for the foreseeable future. In turn, the riders and the behind-the-scenes team members that support the rodeo industry found themselves out of work. But if there’s one thing people in the rodeo business know, it’s that if a bull bucks you off, the best thing
you can do is get back on it and try again. At its core, rodeo is an industry built on resilience, comebacks and hard-earned successes. In reflecting on the impact of the COVID-19 crisis, people can easily find themselves caught up in the negative news cycle that fosters anxiety and uncertainty. However, given that modern rodeo is rooted in a history of more than 140 years of roping, riding and romping, one thing is evident: It’s going to take much more than a virus to bring the industry to a halt.

Essential Businesses are the Lifeblood of the Rodeo Industry In the wake of the coronavirus outbreak and the resulting economic slowdown, many people will doubtlessly experience major financial struggles. It’s possible concerns about money will prevent people from being able to travel great distances to partake in rodeo events. Certainly, ticket sales and on-site vendors that typically drive a large portion of rodeo revenues will take a hit. However, the rodeo industry may be in a unique position to bounce back in a meaningful way. While there’s no doubt the rodeo attracts all types of people, essential businesses are inherently ingrained in the rodeo community. Even in its darkest times, the nation still needs Western staples such as agriculture, ranching, petroleum and a host of other products and services that are integral for maintaining US supply chains. Right now, the corporate sponsors that support sports organizations like the NHL and the NBA are scrambling to figure out how to proceed. Many of these companies are facing tremendous financial losses due to rapid changes in consumer spending habits. But while consumer brands that sell nonessential products are suffering, essential businesses continue to function. Some business owners’ fondness for rodeo dates back generations. Their support for rodeo is an investment in the culture, and that’s something they’re not ready to abandon. These essential businesses that form rodeo’s backbone will get the industry through its most trying time. It’s likely industry leaders will have to make concessions to adapt to the realities of the situation. That could mean temporarily scaling back the festivities surrounding major events or providing more direct support for presently out-ofwork riders and ropers. Regardless of how they choose to proceed, their continued support will be the key to pushing the industry to new heights.

The Economy of Rodeo Entertainment Throughout World War II, sports such as baseball and boxing remained active and popular as the government thought such events would be good for public morale. There’s nothing quite like witnessing a last-second winning field goal or a watching favorite player hit an epic grand slam. Regardless of whether Americans are in the midst of an economic boom or a major depression, people crave sports entertainment. As the economy stabilizes, professional sports will be one of the first areas of the entertainment industry to pick up steam. Nowhere is Americans’ love of sport more evident than the rodeo. The heart-racing, blood-pumping action puts seasoned pros against rookies, veteran riders against fearless underdogs and world-class stars against local legends. It’s precisely this spirit that illustrates why rodeo will quickly recover as a form of entertainment for the masses.
On any given day at the rodeo, fans may find themselves spectating a ride of a lifetime or a devastating, career-ending upset. It’s a surreal experience to watch a cowboy ride a bull, knowing the next eight short seconds can make or break that person’s career. In a time of international struggle, the exhilaration and excitement of the rodeo will undoubtedly serve to bolster peoples’ spirits. Even if coronavirus precautions prevent large crowds, the show can still go on with the riders, a few key industry experts and a video production crew. Fans may not be able to attend in person, but they can still watch and support their favorite riders from afar until life resumes as normal. Further, new broadcast opportunities will mean rodeo has the potential to reach a bigger crowd than ever before.

Rodeos, Riders and Resilience: Bouncing Back, Better than Before Localities will start to lift restrictions slowly and cautiously. As crowds return to the rodeo, this may mean planning to limit events to regions with limited numbers of COVID-19 cases. Riders and others who play pivotal roles within the rodeo industry may be subject to virus testing prior to their participation. As has always been the case with rodeo, safety will remain a primary goal. It’s hard to know exactly what happens next. Perhaps the slowdown is a chance to reflect on the aspects of the industry that are overdue for change. Industry leaders can look to this downtime to discover new opportunities. Just as people in numerous ancillary industries quickly discovered both the conveniences and the challenges of remote work, social distancing can inspire more technology-heavy approaches that lead to growth within the rodeo ecosystem. Unfortunately, rodeo won’t suddenly return at full tilt. More likely, a return to normalcy will be gradual. Some aspects of the industry may never be the same as companies look to revitalize the rodeo in a way it can reconcile with an economy in recovery. Next year’s rodeo industry may look a little bit different than the one fans saw at the start of this year. There may be new marquee sponsors, more emphasis on broadcast events and more opportunities for fans to support riders via direct donations. But as things change, the relentless spirit of rodeo will continue to thrive.

The Bottom Line Photo: Clay Guardipee
In spite of the challenges, it’s important to recognize that times of hardship often also present new opportunities. Perhaps this is a time to rethink some of the old ways of doing things. Just as a bull rider has to quickly adapt to the flow of each unique bull, the industry as a whole can adapt in the face of economic turmoil. For all its challenges, the COVID-19 crisis also shows how communities come together in times of crisis. Piece by piece, the rodeo industry is poised to build something greater than it could have ever imagined. By working hand-in-hand with one another, rodeo supports and fans will gradually begin to realize a new future. As long as there are cowboys, there will be rodeos. Because no matter how hard it gets, cowboys never quit. •

HOW BEN MARQUIS IS REVIVING RODEO IN WILLISTON, N.D.
I
n the once-sleepy locale of Williston, N.D., fields dotted with oil wells signify a community in bloom. Since the 2006 discovery of Parshall Oil Field, about an hour’s drive outside of Williston, the region’s population has nearly doubled. The oil field is located within the Bakken Formation, a sprawling 200,000-squaremile shale deposit that rests within the Williston Basin. After the discovery of Parshall, it wasn’t long before geological researchers learned the entire area was rich with accessible oil. That, in turn, attracted both longtime oil industry experts and newcomers alike. As of 2017, more than 27,000 people called Williston home. It’s now a thriving oil field town where residents embrace the Western
lifestyle. In Williston and the surrounding areas, the phrase “Work hard, play hard” rings especially true. That ethos is precisely why Ben Marquis, the founder of Marquis Metal Works, is on a mission to turn the Williston Professional Bull Riders (PBR) Rodeo into an annual celebration of epic proportions. 2020 marks the second year Marquis Metal Works will be the event organizer. While last year’s event was a success, this year’s event promises a bigger pot, bigger names and a bigger show. “I want to bring the happiness that I get when I go to a PBR event to the people of Williston,” he says. “My goal is to have something fun for the community, something that everybody can celebrate.”

INSIDE PROFESSIONAL BULL RIDERS
RAISING THE STAKES Prior to 2017, Williston hosted up-and-coming riders as part of a PBR Touring Pro Division annual rodeo. Typically, 400 or so enthusiasts would make their way to the Upper Missouri Valley Fairgrounds to watch the event. After 2016, the Williston PBR lapsed. Many could have assumed it was as good as dead. But Marquis has a unique eye for opportunity. A lifelong PBR fan, he recognized that revitalizing the PBR rodeo in Williston would give him a chance for him to share his passion with the locals. In 2019, Marquis Metal Works took on the Williston PBR event as the event organizer. “I had already prepared myself that if I didn’t get enough support from the town, I would pay for it out of my own pocket. That’s just because I want it so bad. And if it were to crash, we’d figure out how to do it differently next year,” he says. It helped that PBR pro Stetson Lawrence is from the area. Marquis Metal Works sponsors Lawrence, who’s made his way to the PBR World Finals Championship seven times. “It’s really fortunate having Stetson here. We ride UTVs side-by-side together. He comes over to the 20

house and eats supper quite often. He swings by my shop all the time,” Marquis says. “There’s a connection with these guys. They’re living their dreams, but you’re helping them achieve them.” To ensure a successful event, Marquis hired professionals to help him curate an unforgettable experience. Knowing pro riders love a big prize pool, the first move was to increase the pot from its previous high by $10,000, bringing it to $25,000. Marquis’s crew also brought in a pyrotechnics team tasked with putting on an incredible fireworks show. His production team signed on two-time Grammy-nominated country music group Little Texas to perform. The producers also locked in iconic PBR entertainer Flint Rasmussen. It was important to Marquis to collaborate with the Native American tribes in the area, so he invited them to participate in the experience. The groups would open the event with a blessing of the grounds. These combined efforts paid off. Some of the PBR’s best riders made their way to Williston. Jess Lockwood, now a two-time PBR World Champion, showed up. J.B. Mauney, Derek Kolbaba, Chase Outlaw, Dalton Kasel and, of course, Stetson Lawrence, were among the other riders in attendance. “A lot of up-and-coming guys came. I didn’t even know who Dalton Kasel was. He came to Williston, won my PBR event, and I said, ‘Who the heck is this guy?’ He’s on TV every weekend now,” Marquis says. The locals turned out, too, to the tune of more than 4,000 people — more than ten times as many as had turned out to the rodeo in any previous year. The event was so big that the rodeo ran out of seating. When standing areas got too crowded, the producers had to turn people away. But with so much enthusiasm from the crowd, Marquis couldn’t help but want to do it all over again.
THE WILLISTON PBR: REDUX This year’s Williston PBR event will be one for the record books. Marquis increased the $25,000 event prize pool to a staggering $40,000. The Williston PBR event is also one of 13 stops on the King of the North Challenge tour. That series offers a total of $350,000 in added money for riders, with more than $130,000 in cash and prizes for the person who claims the “king” title. This year, the team is forgoing a musical act in favor of offering more personal meet-and-greet experiences. “I want that one-on-one relationship that makes people feel like they’re meeting these celebrities who have tremendous talent,’ Marquis says. “When they go to the event, they can wear their shirt that’s signed by J.B. Mauney while watching J.B. Mauney ride.” He’s bringing in the best bulls from surrounding areas, including some from PBR rider Matt Triplett’s father, Pat. He’ll also buck his very own Bill the Butcher, son of the legendary PBR bull Airtime. The crew is also upping the ante on the pyro experience. “I want more pop, boom, explosion, more America. Bring the redneck out a little bit, but everybody likes it,” he says. For those concerned about seating, Marquis assures fans that won’t be an issue this time around. They’re bringing in bleachers for the event. “They’re nice bleachers, and people will be comfortable,” he says. “And if they’re having fun and they’re comfortable, they’re gonna be happy.”

INSIDE PROFESSIONAL BULL RIDERS
IF YOU BUILD IT... Marquis’s desire to revamp the Williston rodeo scene has little to do with marketing his business. Rather, it’s an act of community enrichment for a locale still catching up with rapid change. It’s exactly what one would expect from Marquis, who has a history of taking on near-impossible challenges as well as supporting those who show passion and drive. Recently, Marquis Metal Works opted to sponsor world-class PBR pro José Vitor Leme. Leme gave PBR World Champion Jess Lockwood a run for his money in 2019 but ultimately came in second place in the world standings. “I sat down and talked with him a few times, and he’s just another one of those good-hearted guys,” Marquis says. “So we decided, ‘Heck, you know what? Let’s throw a patch on him and have him represent us.’ It just so happens he’s one of the top riders.” Marquis hopes this event will inspire more support for arts, culture and entertainment throughout Williston. In the future, he’d love to see the community invest in a multipurpose event complex for activities like rodeos, concerts and local sports events. “My goal is to show things can happen that are so exciting, so big and so fun that it makes the town want to support them even more,” he says. “You know that saying, if you build it, they will come? Well, I’m trying to build it. Hopefully, it will come.” •

ylan Smith is on one heck of a ride. The 20-year-old PBR pro from Ararat, Virginia, rapidly rose from a PBR novice to a 2019 World Finals contender. Stunning performances have garnered him an impressive array of sponsors that include MV Outdoors & Hunting, Driven PCR, Bucked Up Supplements, Manscaped, Little River Customs, as well as agency representation via VM Sports. He documents the rodeo lifestyle for his 367,000 followers on TikTok, where one of his videos has more than 59 million views. Yet Smith remains humble. It’s not the fortune and fame that drives him. It’s something far less tangible. “It’s the feeling when you step off,” he says. “It’s kind of indescribable, honestly, unless you’re a bull rider. But every bull rider would probably agree.”
Rodeo Roots There was never a question in Smith’s mind that he would one day make a name for himself in the PBR. “Ever since I was young, I watched the PBR. That’s always been what I wanted to shoot for.” He recalls seeing the movie 8 Seconds and finding himself drawn to sheep riding, with the film’s depiction of a young Lane Frost as his inspiration. As Smith progressed from sheep to calves to steers and, eventually, bulls, it became clear he had innate talent. With his family’s support, he set out to chase the PBR dream. Once he turned 18 and was eligible, he began entering PBR events. From there, it was a relatively fast ascent: A few early PBR wins led to a spot on the PBR Pendleton Whisky Velocity Tour, and more strong placements led to the elite Unleash the Beast Tour. Just over a year and a half after his first-ever PBR, he’d find himself at the World Finals in Las Vegas. Through years of hard work, dedication and prayer, he’d earned his place among the best bull riders in the world.

Smith’s Rising Star Well before the World Finals, the rodeo community knew Smith was something special. Marc Mortellaro, the CEO, President and Co-founder of MV Outdoors & Hunting, was one of many people who recognized Smith’s talent. “I was watching one of the PBR events on TV, and I just noticed the way he was riding, the way he carried himself,” says Mortellaro. Trusting his gut instinct, Mortellaro contacted Smith to offer him the chance to become the first-ever sponsored athlete with MV Outdoors & Hunting. Smith was thrilled to accept the opportunity. “It was my first sponsor, and I was just excited to work with them. I’d seen some of their stuff, and I thought it looked pretty sweet,” Smith recalls. Mortellaro started MV Outdoors & Hunting on the tenets of strength, perseverance and determination, values he sees in Smith. The brand logo, which company co-founder, Vanessa Poli designed, is an image of a bull. While there’s an obvious connection to bull riding, the duo also chose the animal because it symbolizes those core beliefs. Mortellaro cites the 2019 PBR Unleash the Beast opener at Madison Square Garden as a source of inspiration. A year later, MV Outdoors & Hunting would announce a collaboration with the PBR at the same event, featuring a line of PBR co-branded clothing. The company’s rapid growth is at least in part thanks to Smith, whose enthusiasm bolstered the company’s profile among the PBR fanbase. But for Mortellaro, the partnership isn’t about reach or influence. It’s about having a connection with someone who authentically represents the brand. The two are close. When Smith was ready for an agent, he sought Mortellaro’s guidance. Presented with the opportunity to help the young athlete build an incredible future, Mortellaro acquired a license to become a professional agent. He now represents Smith through VM Sports. “That personal relationship has blossomed into something where I consider him family to me. His mom, dad, brother, everybody,” Mortellaro says. “My gut instinct was right.”

AMERICAN BUCKLE MAGAZINE | 2020 VOLUME 1
A Dream Come True Though Smith spent years training for the PBR, it was still shocking to find himself sharing locker rooms with pros he once idolized. “I had to tell myself every weekend that I belonged there,” he says. “I knew I was there for a reason. I knew I’d worked hard. I knew I could ride the bulls there. But going in the locker room and seeing the guys that I’ve been watching on TV for the past five, six, seven years, it just kind of hit me.” Of course, having all been beginners themselves at one point, they immediately accepted him as one of their own. “It felt like I was riding with some superheroes,” Smith says. Those riders he once admired from afar are now his friends. He describes them as “one big family.” The 2019 PBR Finals marked a significant milestone for Smith. It was a culmination of everything he worked so hard to achieve. As one of the youngest competitors at the event, he rode alongside world-class pros like Jess Lockwood, Chase Outlaw and José Vitor Leme. “Even the introduction, when they announced my name out in the arena, that was a surreal moment for me. I’d always just watched it on TV. The top 35 bull riders in the world, all wanting to compete there,” he says. Smith completed his first ride in Round 4, which only furthered his conviction that he was exactly where he was meant to be. “It just goes to show that even for a guy from a small town like me, with hard work, you can make any dream come true.”

More than anything, it’s mental. You have to know you’re gonna have to face buckoffs.

The Grind Keeps On Going Though he admits it can be a tough grind, he stresses the importance of cultivating the right mindset. “More than anything, it’s mental. You have to know you’re gonna have to face buckoffs. You’re gonna have to get on rank bulls. You’re gonna have to do a lot of things not a lot of people are gonna do,” he says. But Smith looks to God to lead him and encourages others to do the same. “If you want it, then God will bring it to you. He will take care of everything that’s in the way and clear out your path,” he says. “You gotta give it time and pray with God and try to figure out if this really what you want with your life, or, more importantly, if it’s what He wants for your life. And if it is, and you know a hundred percent without a doubt, then the work won’t really seem like work.”
A Focus on the Future Though the COVID-19 pandemic left an impact on the PBR, Smith remains optimistic about 2020. He prays for those suffering and for a return to normalcy, with the hope that the second half of the PBR season can continue as planned. In the meantime, he imparts some sage advice. “For anyone out there that wants to be a bull rider, that wants to be a world champion or anything… Even if it’s not bull riding, if you just want to be the best at what you do, just trust God. Pray, pray, pray,” he says. “And don’t worry. Because when you worry, you just increase the chance of whatever you’re worried about happening. Just let it happen. Put in the work that you know you need to put in. And if it’s something that you really want, it’ll happen.” •

THE 2019 WRANGLER NATIONAL FINALS RODEO Photo: Dan Hubbell
I
n December, the PRCA Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (NFR) celebrated its 35th consecutive year in Sin City. From December 5 to 14, thousands of fans gathered at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas to watch the pros chase $10 million in prize money. Open to only the top 15 rodeo athletes in each of the PRCA’s hallmark categories, ropers and riders sought to earn the best average ten-round scores over ten days. The NFR also honored the 2019 PRCA world champions, ranked according to their cumulative PRCA season earnings. Here’s what went down.
BAREBACK Clayton Biglow earned five wins in ten rounds to walk away with the NFR bareback average title. In an epic finale, he tied the NFR record of 93 points with a Round 10 win on Northcott Macza’s Stevie Knicks. Biglow’s $243,891.02 in NFR winnings netted him a total of $425,843 for the 2019 PRCA season, along with the world champion title. The cowboy also won the RAM Top Gun Award, given to the athlete who earns the most in any single NFR category. That momentum is still going strong in 2020 as he’s currently ranked sixth in bareback. Knicks is having a great 2020, too. At the 2020 Cinch Chute-Out in San Angelo, three-time world champion Tim O’Connell rode her to tie the PRCA saddle bronc world record of 94 points. O’Connell holds the 2020 PRCA bareback earnings lead with $73,306.33.

2019 NFR RECAP
STEER WRESTLING Longtime PRCA steer wrestler Matt Reeves took the NFR average title with consistent scores for a total of 48.4 seconds on ten head. Though individual round scores never placed him above third, he snagged the lead after his competitors each faced at least one round exceeding ten seconds. It was a big win for Reeves as it marked his first NFR win since he joined the PRCA in 2003. Though he only placed fifth at the NFR, Ty Erickson scored the 2019 PRCA steer wrestling world champion title with earnings of $234,491. While a third-place NFR finish and an accompanying $138,333 payout left Bridger Chambers with a $217,362 season total, it wasn’t quite enough to deprive Erickson of his first-ever world champion title. 2020 is proving to be quite a year for Reeves as well. He’s presently the PRCA’s top-ranked steer wrestler, thanks to wins at the Texas Circuit Finals, the San Angelo and The American in Arlington, Tex. At $77,580.09, his qualified earnings are more than double that of second-place roper Dakota Eldridge.

Partners Cody Snow (header) and Welsey Thorp (heeler) placed first in the NFR. The team earned six placements, including a Round 7 win, for a total of 43.8 seconds on nine head. Snow and Thorp each earned $161,885, which solidified Thorp’s 2019 world champion heeler title with season earnings of $249,181. Unfortunately, that sum wouldn’t be enough for Snow to snatch world champion header title from Clay Smith, who won it for the second consecutive year. Smith and partner Jade Corkill (heeler) placed sixth at the NFR with 47.3 seconds on eight head. Smith and Corkill presently ranked second for their respective team roping roles while Luke Brown (header) and Joseph Harrison (heeler) top the 2020 PRCA leaderboards. Scoring a win with an average 8.33 seconds on two head at The American, they each took home $100,000, plus an extra $3,000 for taking first in Round 1. Though only $50,000 counts toward PRCA earnings, it’s enough to cement their leads.

SADDLE BRONC With top six placements in nine rounds and qualified rides in all ten, Brody Cress emerged the NFR’s saddle bronc average winner. Zeke Thurston only managed eight rides but won three of those rounds, one of which was an eventhigh 92.5 ride on the PRCA’s 2019 Saddle Bronc Horse of the Year, Northcott Macza’s Get Smart. Thurston’s $170,064 NFR earnings brought his 2019 PRCA total to $347,056, earning him world champion status with Cress as the reserve. Wyatt Casper, who ended 33rd in the 2019 season, is on a tear in 2020. At The American, he rode Get Smart for 91.25 points, aiding an event win and a $100,000 payday. If that weren’t enough, he also cashed in on a $500,000 bonus for event qualifiers who out-placed superstar talent. While only $50,000 of that counts toward 2020 PRCA earnings, the sum still helped Casper net a $70,000 lead over second-ranked Cress.
TIE-DOWN ROPING Newcomer Haven Meged defeated Tyson Durfey by a total of just .20, with Meged’s 85.70 on ten head barely surpassing Durfey’s 85.90. Though Meged never managed a time under 8.0, a full 1.1 seconds longer than Tuf Cooper’s impressive 6.9 in Round 3, five top-six placements earned him the NFR tie-down roping average win. Meged took home $126,135 in NFR earnings, sealing the 2020 world champion title with $246,013 for the season. This year, all eyes are on Shad Mayfield. The 19-yearold has already won six 2020 PRCA events to lead the rankings chart. With $130,700.52 in qualified earnings, $50,000 of which came from a $100,000 win and $500,000 bonus at the American, he’s already earned more PRCA dollars this year than he did in all of 2019.

2019 NFR RECAP
BARREL RACING Ivy Conrado-Saebens emerged as the NFR winner with placements in eight rounds and a cumulative time of 138.44 seconds. Her win earned her the reserve world champion title, runner-up to Hailey Kinsel Lockwood. Lockwood claimed her second consecutive world champion title with 2019 PRCA season earnings of $290,020.49. Two-time barrel racing world champion Brittany Pozzi Tonozzi is hard at work in 2020, having earned $59,887.73 in 11 PRCA-qualified rodeos. But Lockwood remains one to watch. With only six qualified barrel racing events behind her in 2020, she’s already garnered $41,441.13 in PRCA payouts.
Photo: Dan Hubbell
BULL RIDING Sage Steele Kimsey stole the show with an epic 94-point ride on SweetPro’s Bruiser in Round 8, edging out Stetson Wright’s 93.5 on Diddy Wah Diddy. Kimsey also won Round 7 with a 90 on Smoke Wagon. These performances earned him his third NFR average title and cemented his place as the bull riding world champion for the sixth time in a row. Kimzey now sits at the top of the 2020 PRCA leaderboard. But Boudreaux Campbell, who trailed behind Kimzey last year as the runner-up for both the NFR win and the world champion title, is putting up a fight. He currently leads the PRCA Xtreme Bulls standings.

ALL-AROUND Not only was Stetson Wright the 2019 Resistol Rookie of the Year in both bull riding and saddle bronc riding, but he also took home the all-around PRCA world champion title. Netting season earnings of $297,923, he was the first roughstock rider to earn the all-around title since ProRodeo Hall of Famer Ty Murray in 1998.
THAT’S A WRAP In a turbulent year, athletes are poised to be hungrier ever to earn their places at the 2020 NFR. This drive, spirit and heart guarantee plenty of PRCA excitement in the coming months. • *All scores are unofficial.

SPECTATORS “BECOME JUDGES” WITH NEW SKORIT APP SKORIT TAKES EVENT AUDIENCE PARTICIPATION TO A NEW, INTERACTIVE LEVEL.
PRESS RELEASE
Albuquerque, October 1, 2019: Spectators no longer need to wait on the sidelines for judges to post their scores, thanks to SKORIT, a new interactive smart-phone app that allows spectators to post their scores as quickly and easily as the judges. Once they enter their scores, they can see how they compare to the judges and other participating fans. They can also compete for prizes, get coupons for free services or products. Prior to SKORIT, audience participation at judging events has been limited to applause, booing, standing up, shouting and other similar demonstrations of opinion. SKORIT changes all that, giving the audience a voice, a reason to pay close attention to each participant, and an interactive role from beginning to end. “Initial tests at a recent four-day rodeo event made it clear that spectators found it easy, exciting and fun to log in, create a username, score events
and see how they did in relation to the judges and other fans,” said Brown. “For the first time ever, spectators can go beyond applauding or criticizing the judges by being judges themselves. It’s fun, interactive and competitive!” adds Brown. Rodeo Fans, young and old loved to express their opinions on scoring. Rodeo Announcers can access results after each ride, and comment on how the crowd opinion relates to the judge’s opinion. SKORIT adapts to virtually every type of judging event, ranging from gymnastics, ice skating, and diving to beauty pageants, cheerleading, band, dance and equestrian competitions. The app can even be used to rate various aspects of meetings and conferences, such as the quality of the venue, meals and speakers. Some Events are using the fan’s Crowd Average Scores as one of their judge’s scores. Others are using the
Crowd Average Score AS the actual judges score. There’s tons of flexibility and ways to use this exciting new app. In addition to spectator participation, SKORIT offers event organizers and fans the opportunity to develop business partnerships, including securing a national, regional or local SKORIT license or becoming a licensed SKORIT representative for one or more events. Sponsorship opportunities are also available. For more information regarding using SKORIT at your next event, contact SKORIT at 505-269-1497, or email: Chuck.Brown@SKORIT.com
