WELCOME LETTER

WELCOME I

f anyone would have asked me at the beginning of 2020 how I anticipated this year to play out, no doubt my response would have been no different than many of yours. This year’s rodeo and event payouts were poised to be some of the highest in rodeo history. Instead, we found many of our historical rodeo events CANCELLED or postponed. While other sports leagues were trying figure out organizational and new league standards, the rodeo community was preparing for a return to action. Our sport having been around for over 150 years, has seen its fair share challenges before and has founds ways to persevere and overcome obstacles. When you hear the PBR say #BeCowboy, or the PRCA & WPRA say #WeAreProRodeo these are not just catchy phrases for branding purposes, but instead it is the spirit of the real American Cowboy & Cowgirl. A spirit that never gives up or quits, despite what seems impossible to accomplish, our rodeo community finds a way! In this edition our fans can read how this past summer, the PBR surprised rodeo fans when it announced its allnew Monster PBR Team Challenge, presented by U.S. Border Patrol. With events on consecutive weekends from June 5 through July 12, the team-based format placed 48 of the world’s top bull riders into 12 teams of four. Each team had the opportunity to compete for a share of a $400,000 prize pool, including a Built Ford Tough MVP payout of $10,000. We then visit with our friends at the World Champions Rodeo Alliance (WRCA) who has joined forces with the PBR to produce major rodeos including the Inaugural Women’s Rodeo World Championship (WRWC) coming this November 3-7 at the South Point Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. In an effort to create more opportunities for all women rodeo athletes, the WCRA will debut a tiering system based on earnings and rankings in the respective events at this first-ever WRWC. Offering a path to center

stage for everyone by leveling the playing field up front is the point, and WRWC qualifying rounds that include both proand challenger-division pools will put this premise into play. If the phrase “Toughest Sport on Dirt” had a face, you would look no further than two-time PBR World Champion J.B. Mauney. Known as one of the best all-time riders in the history of the Professional Bull Riders (PBR), the North Carolina native suffered a string of serious injuries that impeded his career. His most recent one, a shoulder reinjury that necessitated surgical intervention, put him out for more than seven months — the longest break in his 15year career. He’s Back and ready to prove to world he still has what it takes to be the best PBR bull rider in the world! Seasoned PRCA photographer, Mary Peters, has been telling the stories of rodeo events and athletes through the lens of her camera for years. As rodeo athletes lay it on the line each week chasing that Gold Buckle, her captivating photography shows us the ups and downs each week as she shoots the road to the 2020 Wrangler NFR. In this edition Mary shares with us some of her top photos of the season thus far. A special thanks to all who have contributed to this edition of American Buckle Magazine. Be sure to keep an eye for our American Buckle World Finals Edition coming out this December. Chris Dize Publisher American Buckle Magazine

AFTER A ROUGH RIDE, A RODEO RESTART

F

or J.B. Mauney, the last few years were nothing short of brutal. Known as one of the best all-time riders in the history of the Professional Bull Riders (PBR), the North Carolina native suffered a string of serious injuries that impeded his career. His most recent one, a shoulder reinjury that necessitated surgical intervention, put him out for more than seven months — the longest break in his 15-year career. Though he tried to persevere and gave it his all, the blows would keep on coming for the two-time World Champion rider, who managed to make his way to the PBR World Finals 14 years in a row. Only two riders have made their way to more: 2004 World Champion Mike Lee (16) and 2008 World Champion Guilherme Marchi (15). Even then, Mauney was no stranger to injury — he’s suffered dozens including a broken jaw, a broken collarbone and a near-fatal liver laceration in his decade and a half as a pro rider — it all comes back to an ill-fated 2017 ride that ultimately culminated in his temporary departure from the sport.

AN ILL-FATED ENCOUNTER In July 2017, Mauney was on track to win the Calgary Stampede for the third time when an injury put everything he’d worked toward on hold. He’d hit eight seconds on Cowahbunga in what would be judged as a 90.5 ride, marking his second round win in four days. But when Mauney’s dismount didn’t go as planned, the bull stepped on the rodeo star’s shoulder. Fans watched in horror as medical staff carried Mauney away in a stretcher. Because Mauney’s arm was extended at the time, the bull’s force pushed it so hard that it “knocked the bone off in the process,” according to PBR medical director Dr. Tandy Freeman. “It tore the rotator cuff tendon completely off. I don’t know if I ever saw that tendon completely torn off. I have seen most of it torn off, but I never have seen it completely torn off,” Freeman told PBR.com at the time. Mauney later told a reporter for The Calgary Herald he broke the ball in his shoulder, tore his

bicep tendon, tore another muscle on the backside of his shoulder, and tore the capsule in his shoulder as well. Even so, “It looked a lot worse than it really was,” he contended. A surgery followed. Surgeons needed a screw with 13 anchors to properly reset the cowboy’s shoulder. But even such a major surgery failed to deter Mauney, who simply called it “part of the game.” Despite a projected six-month recovery window, he was back on his feet and riding again four months later. In November, he showed up ready to ride at the 2017 World Championships in Las Vegas, appearing for the 12th consecutive year. Photo By Andy Watson/Bullstockmedia.com

A GOOD RUN OF BAD LUCK Perhaps the move to return to the competitive circuit was a little bit too soon for the rider, who would then go on to experience a grueling couple of seasons. It’s no secret that Mauney took a hell of a beating in the years to follow. Just a few months into his triumphant return, he tore his groin at an Unleash the Beast event in January 2018. In April of that year, he broke his back in Sioux Falls, S.D. after the late Pearl Harbor bucked him off in 2.17 seconds. After taking a couple of months off to recover, he was back riding by June. The 2019 season led to knee, ankle, forearm and rib injuries. He even went as far as to ride at events in Texas and Oklahoma after being diagnosed with a broken fibula in January 2019. That injury occurred upon his dismount from Hou’s Bad News after an 88-point ride at the Sacramental Invitational. But the Texas and Oklahoma events proved too much. Upon aggravating a previous

10

AMERICAN BUCKLE MAGAZINE | 2020 VOLUME 2

ACL injury and realizing he was too hurt to continue, he took a few weeks off. That break was short-lived as well as he climbed back into action within a month. In the weeks that ensued, the most resilient cowboy in the PBR managed to win the season’s seventh Unleash the Beast event with a seasonhigh 90.75 points on Big Black, going 3-for-3 despite his still-broken leg, torn ACL and MCL injuries. But that November, a shoulder reinjury that took place in the bucking chutes at Round 1 of the 2019 World Finals Rodeo left him unable to finish the season. The shoulder was already giving him trouble as he’d also hurt it days before at the Pendleton Whisky Velocity Tour Finals. Cursed with both a torn rotator cuff and a shoulder fracture, he reflected on the challenges of the previous few years. It was then that he finally chose to schedule a long-needed second surgery, which took place in January 2020. He ended 2019 with a career low of 30th place in the world standings.

BACK IN THE SADDLE AGAIN Mauney may be the most determined individual on the planet. When he returns this month, seven long months will have passed since he last entered the arena. “It is 100 times better than it was before,” he told a PBR reporter in April. He also described the 2017 surgery “the worst thing that ever happened to me.” In the April interview, Mauney also said his shoulder hasn’t hurt since the January operation, which involved cleaning up some of the scar tissue that had formed. Still, he’s chosen to be more cautious about returning than he was after the 2017 procedure. This time around, he made sure to wait the full recovery time before giving rodeo another go. Though he was officially cleared to ride in mid-July, he didn’t immediately jump back into competition. Instead, he dutifully continued on in his role as a general manager of Team Boot Barn as part of the Monster Team Challenge, leading the group alongside captain Daylon Swearingen. Team Boot Barn made it to the series playoffs but failed to advance. Via Twitter, Mauney shared he planned to participate in a few rodeos in early August before going full force into the second half of the Monster Unleash The Beast Tour, which kicks off on August 7 in Bismarck, N.D. With just three months to make his way to the World Finals, he has his work cut out for him. But given his history of overcoming the odds, he certainly has the potential to pull it off. 12

THE UNSTOPPABLE COWBOY Mauney’s proven time and again he’s one of the toughest there is. Time and again, he’s shown that as long as he’s capable of doing so, he’s going to be out there, giving it his all and chasing those magical eight seconds on the rankest bulls around. Fans have high hopes for Mauney to bounce back in full form for a dominating performance and a World Championship run. Such a comeback would be nothing less than legendary, and would be a powerful testament to Mauney’s physical and mental fortitude. Certainly, it’ll be a difficult journey for the veteran rider. But if there’s a single person in the entire PBR who can overcome such debilitating injuries, miss half a season and still make his way to the World Championships, it could only be Mauney.

his summer, the PBR surprised rodeo fans when it announced its all-new Monster PBR Team Challenge, presented by U.S. The series began with six days of Division A games over two weekends, followed by another six days of Division B games the next two weekends. Each Challenge Day consisted of three games, scored as wins or losses based on aggregate points per game. Cumulative scores served as tie-breakers and counted toward the MVP title, though individual scores do not impact the PBR regular season. Division leaders earned byes while the second- and thirdranked teams from each division competed in singleelimination playoffs. Kicking off at the South Point Arena in Las Vegas at the South Point Hotel Casino & Spa, teams initially competed without fans present due to COVID-19 concerns. Instead, CBS Sports Network and RidePass televised select games. The result was a fun and furious display of top rodeo talent within a unique competitive format.

CHALLENGE DAY 1-6: DIVISION A HIGHLIGHTS Team Cooper Tires, helmed by Captain Jose Vitor Leme, proved from the start it was the team to beat in Division A. Up against Team Can-Am on Day 1, Leme went 2-for-2, riding Squeeze Box for 84.25 points and Livin Lucky for 84.7 points. With additional scores from team members Sage Kimzey and Stetson Lawrence, Team Cooper Tires earned an overall 336.25 points to Team Can-Am’s 87. Team Cooper Tires maintained its lead in Day 2, racking up 332 points against opponent Team YETI’s zero. In that game, Kimzey managed to aggravate a preexisting injury as a result of his ride on Skitso. The team then called on Lawrence as its alternate, who pulled off an 88.5 ride beating Keno. Team Las Vegas’s Garret Smith went 2-for-2 in a Day 2 matchup against Team Union Home Mortgage. He rode CopperPoint for 83.5 points before taking on Diamond Willow the next round for 87 points. Chase Dougherty’s 86.5 ride on Jungle Can Do solidified a victory. Things got even better for Team Las Vegas the next day as it claimed a blowout, leaving Team Wrangler in the dust with a score of 174.75-0. Team Can-Am’s Ezekiel Mitchell made a strong Day 2 showing, scoring 87.75 points aboard Smokin Gun and 87.5 on Texas Comfort Air’s First Blood. Unfortunately, the team still had a tough road ahead. On Day 3, Team Cooper Tires held firm against Team Union Home Mortgage with a score of 175.75-88.5. Leme set the bar with a 88.5 ride on The Tickler and Kimzey conquered Big Mac for 87.25 points, rendering the team undefeated at

3-0. Day 4 put Team Cooper Tires against Team Las Vegas, which was also 3-0. This showdown marked the first of Team Las Vegas’s two losses to Team Cooper Tires. Though rookies Mauricio Moreira and alternate Rafael dos Santos helped secure a blowout victory for Team CanAm on Day 4 against Team Union Home Mortgage, the team’s loss to Team YETI the following day was YETI’s first and only win. The Team Cooper Tires reign of terror nearly ended when Team Wrangler stepped on Day 5. Fewer than three points stood between the teams when Team Cooper Tires skated by with a score of 173-170.25. Day 6 forced a rematch between Team Cooper Tires and Team Las Vegas, culminating in a blowout 259-0 victory for Team Cooper Tires. With Kimzey out due to injury, 2018 PBR Rookie of the Year Keyshawn Whitehorse stepped in with an 86.75 ride on Bring The Heat. Additional scores from Lawrence and Leme landed Team Cooper Tires a 6-0 perfect run and a bye in the playoffs as the Division A frontrunners. Leme’s 9-for-12 showing also meant he was the prime contender for the Built Ford Tough MVP award. Despite two losses to Team Cooper Tires, Team Las Vegas’s otherwise positive record secured second place in Division A and a spot in the playoffs. Day 6 was also a doozy for Team Cam-Am as it edged out Team Union Home Mortgage by only .75 points, narrowly securing its playoff spot.

DIVISION B: CHALLENGE DAY 7-12 Team Pendleton Whisky kicked off Challenge Day 7 by defeating Team South Point with a score of 166.5-158. Following Team South Point Captain Cody Nance’s 86-point ride, Ty Wallace made the tough decision to decline reride after scoring 72 on Quickfire. This made way for Team Pendleton Whisky alternate Amadeu Campos Silva and Lucas Divino to usurp the lead, scoring 81.25 points and 85.25 points respectively. Having recently bounced back from a neck fracture, Team Ariat Team Captain Cooper Davis managed a 86.5-point ride on Snake Eyes for a Day 7 victory against Team Lucas Oil. Ryan Dirteater, who’d recently suffered thoracic spine injuries, earned 83 points on Pistol for Team Lucas Oil, but it wasn’t quite enough. Team Pendleton Whisky and Team Ariat both remained undefeated by the end of Day 8. In a matchup with Team Boot Barn, Team Pendleton Whisky’s Junio Patrik Souza saved the day as an alternate with a 74-ride for his team’s third out after Amadeu Campos Silva got stepped on. Led by Ky Hamilton, Team Ariat defeated Team Cat on Day 8. Team Cat suffered throughout the series, failing to earn a single game win. Day 9 brought together Division B’s leaders, Team Ariat and Team Pendleton Whisky. Team Ariat was strong with two scores of 90+ points, first with Team Captain Davis on Marquis Metal Works Bill The Butcher for 91 points and then with Hamilton on Spotted Demon for 90.75 points. Hamilton also earned a 84.25 on Holy Water to snag a perfect 2-for-2. Photo By Andy Watson/Bullstockmedia.com

2020 RODEO RECAP However, Team Pendleton Whisky returned with a vengeance on Day 10 to earn 411.75 points, an event record. Team Pendleton Whisky’s new addition Boudreaux Campbell went 2-for-2, earning 87.25 points on Losing My Religion and 85 on Little Okie. Divino also went 2-for-2, first besting Twinkle Toes for 69.25 and then Jaynettes Pet 2 for a solid 86.25 points. Rival Team Cat’s 88.25 paled in comparison. Not to be underestimated, Team Ariat continued its undefeated reign with a 258.5 victory on Day 10 over Team South Point, which failed to score any points. Hamilton once again went 2-for-2, riding Mortimer and Sniper for 86.5 and 84.25 points respectively. Davis secured an additional 87.75 points for the team thanks to Marquis Metal Works Draggin Up. Day 11 resulted in a tie between Team Ariat and Team Boot Barn, each scoring 86.75. This gave Pendleton Whisky the ammunition it needed to poach the lead from Team Ariat. It was close, though, as Team Pendleton Whisky defeated Team Lucas Oil by only 1.5 points with a score of 88-86.5. In a hotly anticipated Day 12 rematch, Team Pendleton Whisky secured its spot at the finals and a first-round bye when it defeated Team Ariat, pulling ahead in the overall rankings. A score of 258.75-88.5 put Team Pendleton Whisky at 5-1-0, while Team Ariat sat at 4-1-1. Team Pendleton Whisky’s Eguchi went 2-for-2, racking up 86.75 points on Pink Tornado and 86 points on Buck Wild. Campbell added to those scores with an additional 86 points on Just Incredi-Bull. Playoff ambitions were high for both Team Boot Barn and Team South Point as the two faced off for the coveted final spot. Ultimately, Team Boot Barn had little to worry about as it smashed its rival in a 152-0 blowout with a 2-for-2 by Team Captain Daylon Swearingen.

PLAYOFF NIGHT 1 On July 10, rodeo fans gathered for the first live sporting event at the Denny Sanford PREMIER Center in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, since the pandemic disrupted American life. The first playoff matchup put third-ranked Division A contender Team Las Vegas and third-ranked Division B challenger Team Boot Barn and resulted in a no-score game. Team Las Vegas’s aggregate score provided a lifeline, and the team moved on to Playoff Day Two. Division A’s Team Can-Am put up a fight against Division B’s Team Ariat, but with only one qualified ride versus Team Ariat’s two, it was destined to be a loss. Team CanAm’s Moreira had the game’s highest score with 88.25 on Black Rose but couldn’t withstand Davis’s 85.25 ride on Evil Intentions paired with Tyler Bingham’s 87.5 effort on Nailed. Team Can-Am matched against Team Boot Barn in the consolation round, leading to the second no-score game of the day. Again looking at the teams’ aggregate scores, Team Can-Am finished ahead of Team Boot Barn to earn fifth place.

PLAYOFF NIGHT 2 Team Cooper Tires earned yet another satisfying victory, this time over Team Ariat with a score of 344.75-89. Whitehorse went 2-for-2 with 8 seconds on Walkin Tall for a score of 84.25, then with a 87.75 via Melanie’s Dream. Leme retained his status as Built Ford Tough MVP leader adding another 86.5 bucking Little Joe and Kimzey earned 86.25 points on Livin Lucky. Team Ariat Captain Davis managed to hang on to Crazy Doc for an impressive 89 points, but it wasn’t nearly enough for a victory. Things were a little tougher for Division A leader Team Pendleton Whisky, which just barely managed to squeeze in a game-winning ride for a 175.75-89.5 victory over Team Las Vegas. Chase Dougherty’s 89.5 score on Heartbreak Kid held the lead for Team Las Vegas for most of the game, but Divino’s 87.5 on Smoke Signal and Eguchi’s 87.25 atop Charlie Brown secured the lead for Team Pendleton Whisky. A consolation match between Team Ariat against Team Las Vegas resulted in the third noscore game of the playoffs. Tallying aggregate scores instead, Team Ariat walked away with third place and a $21,000 prize.

CHAMPIONSHIP After five long weeks of tough competition, Team Cooper Tires, led by Leme, went wholly undefeated in the first-ever Monster PBR Team Challenge. Leme, already the series’ uncontested MVP, kicked the championships into gear with a 88.75 on Sitting Bull. Whitehorse, who’d made a phenomenal showing throughout the series as well, did his part for the team as well with an 88.5 on Stretch. Adding insult to injury, Team Pendleton Whisky earned no points in the Championship. Still, the team’s second place ranking netted an extra $32,000 for the team. Leme’s remarkable 11-for-16 performance not only played a massive role in ensuring his team’s victory, amounting to a $65,000 team Championship payout, but it also earned him the well-deserved title of Built Ford Tough MVP and an extra $10,000. After tallying up his earnings throughout the Challenge, Leme ultimately secured a total of $47,000.

SPECTATORS “BECOME JUDGES” WITH NEW SKORIT APP SKORIT TAKES EVENT AUDIENCE PARTICIPATION TO A NEW, INTERACTIVE LEVEL.

PRESS RELEASE

Albuquerque, October 1, 2019: Spectators no longer need to wait on the sidelines for judges to post their scores, thanks to SKORIT, a new interactive smart-phone app that allows spectators to post their scores as quickly and easily as the judges. Once they enter their scores, they can see how they compare to the judges and other participating fans. They can also compete for prizes, get coupons for free services or products. Prior to SKORIT, audience participation at judging events has been limited to applause, booing, standing up, shouting and other similar demonstrations of opinion. SKORIT changes all that, giving the audience a voice, a reason to pay close attention to each participant, and an interactive role from beginning to end. “Initial tests at a recent four-day rodeo event made it clear that spectators found it easy, exciting and fun to log in, create a username, score events

and see how they did in relation to the judges and other fans,” said Brown. “For the first time ever, spectators can go beyond applauding or criticizing the judges by being judges themselves. It’s fun, interactive and competitive!” adds Brown. Rodeo Fans, young and old loved to express their opinions on scoring. Rodeo Announcers can access results after each ride, and comment on how the crowd opinion relates to the judge’s opinion. SKORIT adapts to virtually every type of judging event, ranging from gymnastics, ice skating, and diving to beauty pageants, cheerleading, band, dance and equestrian competitions. The app can even be used to rate various aspects of meetings and conferences, such as the quality of the venue, meals and speakers. Some Events are using the fan’s Crowd Average Scores as one of their judge’s scores. Others are using the

Crowd Average Score AS the actual judges score. There’s tons of flexibility and ways to use this exciting new app. In addition to spectator participation, SKORIT offers event organizers and fans the opportunity to develop business partnerships, including securing a national, regional or local SKORIT license or becoming a licensed SKORIT representative for one or more events. Sponsorship opportunities are also available. For more information regarding using SKORIT at your next event, contact SKORIT at 505-269-1497, or email: Chuck.Brown@SKORIT.com

WOMEN’S RODEO WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP

TIERING PROVIDES PATH

TO CENTER STAGE FOR ALL AT INAUGURAL WOMEN’S RODEO WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP

T

he World Champions Rodeo Alliance (WCRA) has always been about creating additional opportunities for all rodeo athletes, and has never been satisfied with settling for the status quo. The inaugural Women’s Rodeo World Championship (WRWC), coming up November 3-7 at the South Point in Las Vegas in conjunction with the November 4-8 Professional Bulls Riders World Finals across town at T-Mobile Arena, will pay like a slot machine for barrel racers, breakaway ropers and team ropers. The $750,000 2020 WRWC also will introduce the long-talked-about, but never-before-implemented concept of tiering in all events. In an effort to create more opportunities for all women rodeo athletes, the WCRA will debut a tiering system based on earnings and rankings in the respective events at this first-ever WRWC. Offering a path to center stage for everyone by leveling the playing field up front is the point, and WRWC qualifying rounds that include both pro- and challenger-division pools will put this premise into play. California mom Alison Grantham and Louisiana teen Kylie Conner are from opposite ends of the country. But they’re both perfect poster peeps for the benefits offered by this innovative tiering system. The cream of the cowgirl crop from both the challenger and pro pools will square off in the final showdown for the big bucks in Vegas. And this tiering system will make sure everyone has an equal shot at getting there, regardless of their age, occupation or ability to travel.

WOMEN’S RODEO WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP ALISON GRANTHAM

For an event like this to come along for someone like me is really cool. -ALISON GRANTHAM

Grantham, 52, is a ranching cattlewoman whose top priority is as mom to son Chase, who’ll turn 12 on July 15. Alison, who makes her home on California’s Central Coast in the tiny town of Templeton, has had much success in West Coast rodeo arenas, from her college days at Cal Poly to regional ranch and open rodeos. Grantham has done a lot of team roping over the years, and the WCRA and WRWC have renewed her enthusiasm in the breakaway roping, too. Anyone can enter the WRWC (entries open on July 27 at Entrytool.com), but the top 64 from the Virtual Rodeo Qualifier (which is powered by Rodeo Logistics) nominations leaderboard will have their entry fees paid at the Finals. “I’ve been mostly heeling, and there aren’t that many girl heelers, so I’ve been nominating our local jackpots,” Grantham said. “I’m excited about this finals, because it’s going to pay a lot of money and we only compete against other women. The fact that it’s an all-women’s rodeo makes it a more even playing field in itself. Equal money for women team ropers is amazing, and it has me motivated to get busy and back to my breakaway roping, too. There’s a lot of incentive here—a high-stakes challenge—so I want to try it on.” Grantham has stepped onto big roping stages and succeeded before. In 2014, she and friend and fellow Central

48

AMERICAN BUCKLE MAGAZINE | 2020 VOLUME 2

Coast mom Amy Lewis won the Ladies Only Invitational Team Roping held in conjunction with the Wildest, Richest Rodeo in the West in Reno, with many of the all-in womenroper wolves also in attendance. Lewis and Grantham each won $15,000 for their efforts. Each partner on the winning team at the WRWC in Vegas will win a whopping $60,000, thanks to equal money in the team roping. The WRWC allaround champ also will earn a $20,000 check. Grantham—who lost her right thumb dallying in 2016— and her chestnut horse Douglas are fired up about the chance to rope for so much money. Heeling contestants can pick their preference and dally or tie on at the WRWC in Vegas. “I can’t swing my rope the same since cutting off my thumb, because my thumb is shorter and doesn’t bend the same as CHASE GRANTHAM AND MOM ALISON

it used to,” Alison said. “But I’d still rather dally, so that’s what I’m going to do. I watched (Arkansas cowgirl) Whitney DeSalvo win first, second and third (with Hope Thompson, Lari Dee Guy and Audrey Hart, respectively, for a total of $29,250) at the BFI (Charlie 1 Horse All-Girl Challenge) at the Lazy E last month. As a girl heeler, that was awesome to see. I hope I get the chance in Vegas to shake her hand. “I crave roping. It’s what gets me out of bed and motivates me. Getting better is a game with me, and I work hard at trying to get that done. For an event like this to come along for someone like me is really cool. I just want to see if I can compete with all the new girls coming in. There’s only one way to find out, and that’s to go for it. I’ve got to try, and if I’m going to do it, I’ve got to do it now. I’m not getting any younger, but I still feel like I’m competitive. My plan and goal is to breakaway rope and heel in Vegas. I want to go for it, so I’m going to have three horses saddled every morning starting today.” Kylie Conner of Welsh, Louisiana, comes from the other end of the WRWC contestant spectrum. At 17, she’s starting her senior year of high school. And because of her age, she can’t compete on the full-time rodeo trail until she turns 18. But the WRWC is open to all women 13 and older, so young cowgirls like Kylie are welcome. Conner knows a little bit about the WCRA and its #AllForRodeo opportunities. She and her best friend and neighbor, Josie Conner, competed alongside their rodeo heroines earlier this year at the $1 million WCRA Royal City Roundup. In fact, Kylie celebrated her 17th birthday in Kansas City, where she and her palomino partner, Fancy, did barrel racing battle against the likes of World Champion Barrel Racer Brittany Pozzi Tonozzi and 2019 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo Barrel Racing Champ Ivy Conrado Saebens.

I’m very grateful to have the opportunity to go up against the pros, but also to compete with the other challengers.

KYLIE CONNER AND FANCY

“The WCRA event in Kansas City was amazing,” Conner said. “The money was great, but the biggest thrill was being able to run against the stars. The chance to prove myself, and that I can rodeo on the biggest stage there is—was priceless.” The winners in Kansas City won at least $50,000 apiece. Each champ at the WRWC in Vegas will win $60 grand. And Conner plans to double down, as a challenger in both barrel racing and breakaway roping—which also will make her a contender for that $20,000 all-around bonus. Up-and-comer Kylie will charge the open barrel racing field at the WRWC aboard her four-footed best friend, Fancy, who’s a 12-year-old gelding just five years her junior. “Fancy is amazing,” Kylie said. “He just makes my job easy, because he does his job every time he goes into the pen. He never shoulders or dives into barrels. He just stands FANCY TAGS ALONG WITH KYLIE AND HER BREAKAWAY HORSE, MOUSE

up, stays true and does whatever I want him to do. I’ve had Fancy about five years now. He’d been to some futurities and jackpots, but no rodeos when I got him. So we’re climbing the rodeo ladder together.” Kylie has competed in Vegas one other time—in the breakaway roping at the Junior World Finals a couple years ago. She isn’t afraid of the cross-country commute, courtesy of her “truck-driving dad,” Kyle Conner. “Vegas is obviously a major rodeo destination,” Kylie said. “And I really like that girls get to run at an all-around. That’s unique at pro rodeos. I think it’s awesome that I’ll get to be a challenger in two events. I’m very grateful to have the

opportunity to go up against the pros, but also to compete with the other challengers. There are some really talented people who aren’t out there on the road full time. We all get to meet up in Vegas, and I think it’ll be so fun. I’m planning to enter (the WRWC) early. In fact, I’m 99 percent positive that we’ll enter as soon as entries open. “Las Vegas has a special rodeo atmosphere, and is the home of one of my biggest dreams, which is to make the NFR. To get to go there and compete now—before I even turn 18—will do nothing but make me stronger. The WRWC will help me build my confidence and prove to myself that I can make it all the way in rodeo. This is another chance to run against the same caliber of contestants as we did in Kansas City.” Though they haven’t yet set their November travel plans in stone, odds are Cajun Conner cowgirls will make the trek to Nevada together. “Like I said in Kansas City, it’s hard to explain the awesome feeling we have to get to go up against the best in the world, and everybody in the WCRA has been so welcoming and nice,” Kylie said. “I’m so happy I’m speechless.” Progress always comes with questions. All details and answers to most questions can be found at WomensRodeoWorldChampionship.com. Anyone needing additional clarification, who wants or needs to talk to someone at the WCRA, is welcome to call 833-368-3787.

Mary Peters

hen rodeo fans tune in each year for the Wrangler NFR in Las Vegas, Nevada the thought seldom arises on how these athletes made it there. For Mary Peters, a seasoned PRCA Photographer, she can not only tell you, but show you through the lens of her camera. Mary has shot some of the biggest rodeos across the country including the Wrangler NFR and has captured some of these athletes’ biggest nights. Her unique ability to be in the right place at the right time has not only served her well in the rodeo industry but also in the business sector becoming a go to photographer for businesses across the country. We asked Mary in this edition of American Buckle to share with us some of the highlight so far this year in 2020, calling it…” The Road to the Championship.” Enjoy!
