WELCOME LETTER

WELCOME T

here is just something special we all can relate to when thinking about the fall season. For many, it’s the cooler air moving in after a hot summer. To some, it’s the changing of the leaves, while to others, it’s pumpkin spice everything. But for rodeo athletes, the beginning of fall means… it’s GO time! Every event on the backstretch of the season counts as one step closer to competing for a gold buckle. Ezekiel “Blue” Mitchell knows all too well about competing each week at the top. In this edition, we stop by and talk to the 24-year-old bull rider, who is currently ranked among the PBR’s top 25 athletes and has a million-dollar smile to go with his larger-than-life personality. He shares with us his love for bull riding and the challenges of navigating through the sport. Matt West is known as one of the best PBR in-arena announcers in the business, but when you look outside the arena, you’ll see that this big guy is really best at life! The western sports personality, entrepreneur and podcast host reflects on his rise in the PBR. He shares with us how he is now paying it forward to others through Westfit Gym and his podcast, Matt West Now. Using the power of the mic, the show helps fans connect with the rodeo athletes they love, as well as other interesting people West has gotten to know throughout his journey. Each week, as rodeo stands across the nation fill up with fans, spread throughout the crowd, you’ll find numerous men and women who represent America’s farming community. Farmers make up one of the hardestworking professions on the planet, and agriculture and ranching run deep inside the rodeo community. Globally, CEAT Specialty Tires has these same roots in the ag tire

business. Throughout its nearly 100 years in operation, the company has helped farmers across the globe increase the bottom line. We check in to discuss the latest technology in ag tires and learn how CEAT was recently named “Official Ag Tire Sponsor and Exclusive Category and Broadcast Partner” of the World Championship Rodeo Alliance (WCRA). At Tarleton State University, the rodeo team has been winning championship titles since 1967. Going back five decades, the program boasts seven national team titles and twenty-eight individual College National Finals Rodeo Champs. With names like Jackie Hobbs-Crawford, Brody Cress, Jacobs Crawley, Haven Meged and JJ Hampton, the list just goes on and on. TSU’s rodeo program has some of the top coaching staff, and they always find ways to elevate these future all-star athletes to the next level. TSU shares with us how they’ve managed to navigate through COVID protocols along with the latest on their mission to expand their arena facilities. As always, we want to recognize and thank our sponsors. Without you, none of this would be possible. Also, a special shout-out to our team for always being the best at what you do. Keep an eye out in December for our World Finals edition. Chris Dize Publisher

zekiel “Blue” Mitchell is the epitome of the cowboy hero archetype: a young gun with a million-dollar smile forging his own path. The 24-year-old bull rider, currently ranked among the PBR’s top 25 athletes, never thought twice about pursuing his rodeo dreams. Mitchell, whose sponsors include Ariat International and Full Throttle Energy Drink, might be ranked higher had it not been for a groin injury that kept him from competing for several weeks earlier this year. But the 2021 PBR season isn’t over, and Mitchell isn’t slowing down. To date, Mitchell boasts career earnings of more than $264,000. In June alone, he took first at the PBR Stockyards Showcase in Fort Worth and also tied for first with fellow cowboy Keyshawn Whitehorse at the PBR Tyron Cute Out in North Carolina. He hit a career high ride earlier this year when he scored a 93 on defending two-time World Champion bull Smooth Operator (Dakota Rodeo/Julie Rosen/Clay Struve/ Chad Berger) at the Pendleton Whisky Invitational. However, it hasn’t been an easy journey. Like any good cowboy story, his is a tale of unbridled resilience. It won’t cease until long after he achieves the ultimate goal: a PBR World Champion title. “Whether that journey takes forever or just today, I’m here for it,” he says.

INSIDE PBR

“I Didn’t Choose It, It Chose Me” Online, there are plenty of articles about Mitchell’s trajectory in rodeo as one of few Black professional bull riders — a quick Google search shows articles from USA Today, GQ Magazine and BBC.com. But Mitchell continues to assert his race hasn’t posed any issues at the top level of competition in bull riding, where ultimately, all that matters is how well someone can ride. “There aren’t racist people in rodeo,” he says, referring specifically to the community of rodeo insiders he calls family. “There are racist people outside of it, and there’s always going to be racist people. But as far as I’ve seen in my whole career, it’s more so if you can stay on a bull, or whatever part of the rodeo industry you’re in. If you can do that, then it doesn’t really matter. They’re just there to see you do your task.” Mitchell recognized his calling early on and was determined to pursue it. “It’s, like, the biggest cliche, but it does feel like that whole deal where they say ‘I didn’t choose it, it chose me,’” he says. “For me, as far as being a cowboy and wanting to be a cowboy and wanting to rodeo, I just always knew that this is where I was heading and was the direction I was going in.” Unlike many of his peers, Mitchell didn’t grow up in a wealthy rodeo family with easy access to bulls and gear. The Texas native split his time between his father’s home in Rockdale and his mother’s in Baytown, alongside 11 siblings.

"IT'S, LIKE, THE BIGGEST CLICHE, BUT IT DOES FEEL LIKE THAT WHOLE DEAL WHERE THEY SAY 'I DIDN'T CHOOSE IT, IT CHOSE ME" -EZEKIEL MITCHELL

Throughout his childhood, he passionately followed the sport of bull riding and watched YouTube videos to learn techniques. As a teen, his parents reluctantly allowed him to enter a steer-riding contest put on by his church. After that experience, he began to nurture his talent, even going so far as to construct a mechanical practice bull. At a rodeo camp, he donned a blue cowboy hat that he’d picked up at a garage sale, which earned him the nickname “Blue.” While attending Hill College in Texas, Mitchell competed for the school’s rodeo team. He then moved on to the PBR circuit. But, like riding a rank bull, it wasn’t easy to stay on top. In 2017, financial troubles put his career on hold. Vice Media explored Mitchell’s experience in a documentary about Black cowboys, in which he opens up about how he used part of his rodeo earnings to pay for repairs to his family home after Hurricane Harvey. As a result, he couldn’t afford to go on the road and compete.

Mitchell says he didn’t particularly like how Vice depicted his struggle. He feels it implied that he harbored a victim mentality wherein he believed his racial background kept him from reaching the top echelon of PBR success, which couldn’t be further from the truth. “Really, the only thing that I said that was keeping me from getting there was me and my finances,” he says. “It was just a weird situation that I didn’t particularly like. It opened up a lot of opportunities there to do some better things, but I definitely felt used by the whole deal.”

Four years later, his finances are in a much better place. Entrepreneur Max Maxwell watched the documentary and took an interest in Mitchell, later signing on to become the young bull riding phenom’s agent. Eventually, Maxwell invited Mitchell to move to North Carolina and train on a ranch, rent-free. With the backing and support to succeed, Mitchell was on an upswing. However, in 2020, the global pandemic caused another setback. “Last year was the year that I was pretty much really finding myself. And I really felt like I had a lot to show for it, that I was coming up. And then everything got canceled kind of blew up in the face of all of us,” he says. “The big thing I got to take away from it all was the fact that anything can happen.”

Rodeo Culture Goes Mainstream: Leveraging the Power of Social Media Mitchell is a major player in a wave of rodeo athletes using the power of social media to bring rodeo to mainstream audiences. Young people are seeking out rodeo videos via platforms like Instagram and TikTok, where Mitchell has 84,000 and 304,000 followers respectively. On Snapchat, Mitchell was the subject of a documentary series called “Life by the Horns,” which has nearly 300,000 followers. “As long as rodeo has been around, it’s actually relatively new to this whole mainstream media kind of thing. So we have to just kind of reach out and make sure that mainstream media can see us more,” he says. “It’s a slow process, but I don’t think it’s gonna be as slow as we think.” Ultimately, such exposure could make rodeo sports a viable path for anyone, regardless of whether they’ve grown up around rodeos and Western culture.

"MY GOAL IN LIFE AS OF RIGHT NOW IS JUST TO MAKE SURE THAT PEOPLE CAN GET A LITTLE LOOK INTO THE SPORT THAT I LOVE SO MUCH." -EZEKIEL MITCHELL

“My goal in life as of right now is just to make sure that people can get a little look into the sport that I love so much,” he says. “You don’t have to grow up in a Western lifestyle or have this, like, cowboy mentality. You can enjoy it.” He’s already managed to influence at least one aspiring rodeo athlete: his brother, bull rider Jahmal Moore. Moore currently resides with Mitchell in North Carolina.

INSIDE PBR

Down the line, Mitchell hopes his mainstream appeal will steer him toward a career in entertainment. “I’ve always wanted to do the whole acting thing. As long as I can remember, I really wanted to be a cowboy. I thought acting was cool. I was really drawn to movies like Tombstone,” he says. “I’ve always thought it’d be cool to play some of those cowboy roles.” But for now, he’s laser-focused on that PBR World Champion title. But no matter what the future holds, he’ll continue to enjoy the ride. “For the most part, I always knew that I would end up where I am. It was all about putting in the work to get there,” he says. “I’m just enjoying my dream. And that’s all there really is to it.”

THE WESTERN SPORTS PERASONALITY, ENTREPRENEUR AND PODCAST HOST REFLECTS ON HIS RISE IN THE PBR.

att West is a busy man. Between being a go-to announcer for the PBR, recording his podcast, and overseeing operations at the gym he owns near his hometown of Delaware, Okla., it’s hard to imagine how one man can handle so much. As an announcer, he’s on the road most weekends, tasked with the job of narrating the rodeo experience for thousands of excited fans. As a podcaster, he’s a thoughtful conversationalist, digging into the minds of his guests on Matt West Now. The podcast is available on Spotify, iTunes and anywhere else quality podcasts are available. Finally, as the owner of Westfit Gym in Nowata, Okla., he’s deeply engaged in improving the lives of those in his community through fitness. And, in case that’s not enough to keep him occupied, 39-year-old West serves as an endorsee for American Hat Company and Wrangler. He also works with Cooper Tires, Texas-based Fenoglio Boot Co. and WSM Auctioneers. But West wasn’t always the confident, capable PBR announcer fans know and love. “I was super shy growing up,” he says. “So I never in a million years dreamed I would talk in front of crowds of people. And, still to this day, sometimes I have to remind myself how crazy it is.”

INSIDE PBR

FROM RADIO TO RODEO West never planned on becoming one of the best-known western sports announcers in the industry. He grew up around horses and rodeos and judged horses in college, thinking he might eventually become a horse show judge. Although he’d dabbled in radio, it was just a pipe dream. However, things changed rapidly one day after he and a friend attended a Junior Bull Ride event. “My buddy and I kind of made fun of the announcer. We said we could probably do better than that guy,” he says. “So, we got forced into doing a Junior Bull Ride. And I say ‘we,’ but he didn’t show up, and I got forced into doing it by myself.” The team that put on the event invited him back to several more events. It wasn’t long before others recruited him as an announcer for amateur rodeos.

IF YOU’VE GOT A POSITIVE STORY OR A STORY OF OVERCOMING ADVERSITY, SOMEBODY CAN LEARN FROM THAT. - MATT WEST “My very first rodeo performance had everything go wrong that could possibly go wrong,” he says of that first event, which took place in 2004. “And I knew that from that moment forward, I’d never have another performance that was as rough to navigate as that one.” By 2007, he was announcing for the PBR, and by 2010, he found himself at the PBR World Finals. “The cool thing about announcing live events or being on live television is there is no safety net. You have to adjust,” he says. “I think sometimes we forget that in our day-to-day lives. We’re never promised tomorrow. And so we get through today as best we can,” he says. A MODERN VOICE IN THE BUSINESS West has more than 28,000 followers on Instagram and 10,000 fans on Facebook, plus he reaches thousands of others with his podcast. He credits social media with bringing renewed interest to western sports among the masses. “It’s helped bring in new eyeballs and partnerships. It’s helped grow different brands, businesses, everything. It’s grown exponentially,” he says. “Now our athletes can tell their own stories. So I can get on social media and see that a bull rider just announced he and his wife are expecting a child. Those are the kinds of things that fans can relate to.” His enthusiasm for social media also speaks to West’s passion for storytelling. He believes these firsthand accounts foster direct connections between riders and fans, which he taps into in his role as an announcer.

Photo: Andy Watson / bullstockmedia.com

“At the end of the day, if you can personalize and make a fan relate to an athlete, then now all of a sudden, they’ve got a reason to cheer for that person,” he says. This passion for stories is also one of the reasons Matt West Now features guests from numerous different disciplines. In addition to rodeo athletes, past guests have included police officers, bodybuilders and UFC fighters. “I’m a fan of good people. And that’s probably something I’ll have them put on my tombstone someday,” he says. “If you’ve got a positive story or a story of overcoming adversity, somebody can learn from that.”

I DEVELOPED THIS PROMISE TO MYSELF THAT IF I WERE EVER IN A POSITION TO HELP OTHER PEOPLE, I WOULD. - MATT WEST

PAYING IT FORWARD Today, West uses his platform as a beacon of inspiration to others. Westfit Gym is a testament to his mission to improve the lives of those around him. When he was 22, he struggled with his weight. The thought of working out made him uncomfortable, to the extent that it was difficult for him to work up the courage to even walk into a gym. “I developed this promise to myself that if I were ever in a position to help other people, I would,” he says. “If I could ever open a gym and ensure that people wouldn’t be intimidated and that everybody could come in — that every age range at every stop along their individual fitness journey could all come together and have a place to go — I was going to do that.” The 24-hour gym fosters a sense of community through fitness. It’s a welcoming space and there’s a piece of West in every element of the brand. This includes the gym’s logo, which features a bull with a half-smile similar to West’s. While West deserves credit for his long list of accomplishments, he also tips his hat to his wife, Megan. After initially meeting via Instagram several years ago, the two made it official when they married in April this year. “We really are that couple that, if people could see our everyday life behind the scenes, they would be so disgusted because we are annoyingly positive and annoyingly obsessed with our own relationship with each other,” he says.

INSIDE PBR

THE FUTURE OF WESTERN SPORTS In looking ahead at the 2021 PBR World Champion title race, West thinks it’s Jose Vitor Lemé’s buckle to lose. While last year’s World Champion is currently the PBR’s number one ranked bull rider, West doesn’t discount 2018 World Champion Kaique Pacheco or 2016 World Champion Cooper Davis, ranked second and third, respectively. The PBR’s top three riders are also all competing for their second World Champion title. However, he’s also keenly aware of the rising stars who could quickly shoot up in the rankings with consistent performances.

Photo: Leo Loera / bullstockmedia.com

“We’re very fortunate to be living in a time where the young bull riders are so incredibly talented that it can be anybody at any given time,” he says of young riders to watch. “I’m a big Chase Dougherty fan right now. I love Ezekiel Mitchell. I’m a huge advocate for Andrew Alvidrez. I don’t know that anybody works as hard as Andrew Alvidrez does and thinks about bull riding as much as he does.” Drawing on his 17 years as an announcer, West will continue to use his voice to bridge the gap between traditional audiences and new generations of fans. He’s optimistic about the growing opportunities to make western sports accessible to all. “That’s the great thing about our sport is you don’t have to grow up in the industry, or around the lifestyle, to be infatuated with it or to become a fan of it,” he says. “We have something for everybody in the sport.”

Latest technology trends: IF and VF Tires To meet the latest farming needs (where bigger machines have become the norm), CEAT has introduced its VF and IF range for ultra large tractors and self-propelled sprayers. The 2 major characteristics which set VF and IF tires apart from the standard radials are:

1. Higher load carrying capacity:

The VF (Very high flexion) tires are designed to carry 40% more load, as compared to standard radial tires at the same pressure. On the other hand, the IF (Increased Flexion) tires are equipped to carry 20% higher load than the standard radial tires at the same pressure.

2. Reduced soil compaction:

In the field, VF tires can be operated at 40% lower air pressure as compared to standard radials, for the same load. For the IF tires, the air pressure can be lowered by 20% compared to standard radials, while carrying the same load. The lower pressure of VF and IF tires produces a larger tire footprint which leads to lower soil compaction.

Reaching Out to America’s Rodeo Community With rodeo’s deep roots in America’s agriculture and ranching history, it’s no surprise CEAT is tapping into the rodeo community to educate people about how to save money by investing in the right tires. In July, CEAT announced a three-year partnership with the World Champions Rodeo Alliance (WCRA), wherein CEAT was designated the ‘Official Ag Tire Sponsor and Exclusive Category Event and Broadcast Partner.’ The WCRA is a leading rodeo sports and entertainment company.

WE DEFINITELY WANT TO CONTRIBUTE TO THE PROFITABILITY OF RANCHERS BY OFFERING THEM HIGHQUALITY TIRES. - RYAN LOETHEN CEAT will also sponsor this year’s Women’s Rodeo World Championship (WCRA). The event, put on by the WCRA and Professional Bull Riders (PBR), will be held in conjunction with the PBR World Finals in Las Vegas from Nov. 1-6. CEAT will also sponsor the National High School Rodeo Association (NHSRA) and the Indian National

Finals Rodeo (INFR) in Las Vegas from Oct. 19-23, which celebrates horse culture and ranch lifestyle in America’s Indian Country. With these sponsorships, CEAT hopes to connect with the farmers and ranchers that comprise the backbone of the rodeo community and help them make better decisions when it comes to their tire needs. Loethen himself belongs to a family that owns ranches. “We definitely want to contribute to the profitability of ranchers by offering them high quality tires,” he says.

NATIONAL TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP TITLES

TARLETON RODEO HAS A GRIP ON WINNING

T

arleton State University has been home to rodeo champions since 1967. Going back more than five decades, the program boasts seven national team titles and 28 individual College National Finals Rodeo champs. Coach Mark Eakin helmed two of those team championships. “If you think of all the students who have come through the rodeo program at Tarleton, they’ve set a standard like no other program across the nation,” he said. “They gave us something to strive for — the tradition of winning — and helped create the support that Tarleton has for our program.”

While covid made life difficult for riders and ropers at all levels, Tarleton still managed to shine. Consider: •

After losing much of the 2020 spring season, Tarleton placed half a dozen qualifiers in this year’s CNFR in Casper, Wyo. Last February the university’s Rodeo Hall of Fame inducted six new members, all part of the 2005 national championship team. That came on the heels of the PRCA National Finals Rodeo, held in December in Arlington, that had a competitor with Tarleton ties in every event. One of them took a world crown. That same month, university officials announced the acquisition of a new facility that will house the storied rodeo program. The women’s national champions of 1969, 1970 and 1971 were honored in 2020 with induction into the Texas Rodeo Cowboy Hall of Fame.

NO ESCAPING

Sarah Angelone flicks her rope ion the first go-rouynd of the 2021 CNFR. The Tarleton breakaway roper qualified for the Casper event by winning the NIRA Southwest title.

IN THE DIRT

Steer wrestler Walt Arnold captured the NIRA Southwest Regional crown in 2021 on his way to a second appearance at the CNFR.

CHAMPIONSHIP FORM

Tarleton breakaway roper Maddy Deerman performs in the early going of the 2021 College National Finals Rodeo in June in Casper, Wyo. Deerman was one of six qualifiers to the annual championship rodeo.

SUCCESSFUL RIDE

Tarleton saddle bronc rider Jake Barnes qualified for his third CNFR in 2021. Barnes is one of four Tarleton riders and ropers who performed in the championship finals.

ROUGH STOCK

Cullen Telfer represented Tarleton in the bull riding event at the 2021 CNFR after earning the NIRA Southwest Regional title.

After a covid-related cancellation a year ago, six members of Tarleton’s 2021 team earned a spot in this year’s College National Finals Rodeo. Breakaway ropers Sarah Angelone and Maddy Deerman, goat tyer Rickie Engesser, saddle bronc rider Jake Barnes, bull rider Cullen Telfer and steer wrestler Walt Arnold all represented the university in the annual June event. Barnes, Telfer, Arnold and Engesser qualified for the championship finals, the cap of a demanding campaign that stretches from September to April. “The college rodeo season is one of the toughest things to do,” said Arnold, the 2021 National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association Southwest Region steer wrestling champion. “You only get 10 rodeos. In pro rodeo you can go to 80 a year, but in college you have to make all 10 count.” Tarleton’s Rodeo Hall of Fame named its 2021 inductees, known for a long line of firsts, both as individual competitors and as members of the university team. Barrel racer Sue Magers, roper Kirby Eppert and bareback bronc riders Perry Lee and Richmond Champion are set for November induction.

50

ABM | 2021 VOLUME 2

Magers was the first woman to make the CNFR while representing Tarleton, qualifying in 1965 and again in 1966. Eppert, winner of the 2007 CNFR All-Around Cowgirl title, qualified multiple times in both breakaway roping and goat tying. As a pro she qualified for the National Finals Rodeo in 2020, the first year the event included breakaway roping. Lee was the first bareback rider to win a national championship for Tarleton, taking the CNFR event in 1973, and Champion was the first bareback rider to earn $1 million for a single ride, claiming that distinction while still a Tarleton student. He has qualified for the NFR six times and was the first American Rodeo winner in 2014. The Tarleton Rodeo Hall of Fame made its first inductions in 2012 and features 48 high-achieving student-athletes and others instrumental in the program’s success.

I DON’T THINK YOU CAN WORK HARD ENOUGH OR PRACTICE ENOUGH IF YOU WANT TO BE THE BEST. - PADON BRAY

Alumna Jackie Hobbs-Crawford made history at the NFR breakaway roping world championship at Globe Life Field, taking the event’s inaugural title in December. “It was nerve-racking because obviously what a big thing this is and will go down in history,” she said. “Of course you have nerves, but if you can turn those nerves into positive energy and use them in the right direction, it is a good thing.” Her title was the Stephenville resident’s 20th world championship and her third in breakaway roping, and it happened with Jackie carrying an extra rider. She was six months pregnant. Fourteen riders and ropers with Tarleton ties qualified for the NFR in 2020, including bareback riders Champion and Leighton Berry; saddle bronc riders Brody Cress, Jacobs Crawley and Isaac Diaz; tie-down ropers Haven Meged and Timber Moore; team roping heelers Shay Dixon Carroll and Paden Bray; breakaway ropers Hobbs-Crawford, Eppert and J.J. Hampton; steer wrestler Jace Melvin; and barrel racer Cheyenne Wimberley.

BRODY CRESS

Former Tarleton State University bronc rider Brody Cress works for the horn at the 2018 College National Finals Rodeo in Casper, Wyo.

One of the hottest cowboys in the PRCA is Tarleton graduate Bray, a team roping heeler, who in 2019 was named Resistol Rookie of the Year by the PRCA and finished just out of the standings for the National Finals Rodeo. A year later he nailed 11th place in the world and earned his first spot in the NFR, which for the first time was held in Arlington. “I don’t think you can work hard enough or practice enough if you want to be the best,” Bray said. “Tiger Woods and Michael Jordan are the best at what they do, not just because of their talent but because they put in lots of hard work to go with their natural talent. “That’s what made them great. Around here, against the best in the world, it demands the best of everybody. Let the work get you ready for competition.”

RODEO HOME

Tarleton rodeo got a new home in 2020. The 100plus member team is now at home at the former Downunder Horsemanship Ranch near Stephenville.

52

ABM | 2021 VOLUME 2

Tarleton’s elite rodeo program got new digs last winter and is now headquartered on the Downunder Horsemanship Ranch, just a stone’s throw from the university’s Stephenville campus. Longtime Tarleton supporters Brad and Nancy Allen bought a portion of the iconic ranch last fall after world-renowned horse trainer Clinton Anderson switched his focus to training and showing performance horses in Arkansas. Tarleton will lease a portion of the ranch — 47 of the 80 acres — with hopes to buy the property pending approval by The Texas A&M University System Board of Regents and the outcome of a successful fundraising campaign. The Tarleton State College women’s rodeo team set a historic precedent by winning consecutive national championships in 1969, 1970 and 1971, and in 2020 the seven women who made up those teams — Karen Walls, Sally Preston, Angie Watts Averhoff, Vicki Higgins Emerson, Connie Wilkinson Wood, Sharon Harrison Youngblood and Martha Tompkins Jordan — were named to the Texas Rodeo Cowboy Hall of Fame. Besides earning three straight National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association team titles, four of the women earned individual event crowns. Watts was goat tying champion, and Preston won the breakaway roping title in 1969; Wilkinson was the nation’s top collegiate barrel racer in 1970; and 1971 saw Wright finish first in the country in barrel racing. Their achievements were recognized by induction into Tarleton’s Rodeo Hall of Fame in 2012 and into the Stephenville Cowboy Capital Walk of Fame in 2000. Tarleton’s rodeo team is one of the largest in the nation with more than 100 card-carrying members. The tradition and the history of excellence behind wearing the purple vest put Tarleton in the conversation with other dominant sports programs in the nation. “Talk about Duke in college basketball, Alabama in college football, that kind of success spreads,” said former coach and Hall of Fame member Bob Doty. “You get to be known as a rodeo school like Alabama is known as a football school.”

REAL CHAMPIONS ARE TARLETON TEXANS In a history stretching back to 1947, Tarleton State University rodeo boasts seven national team titles and 28 individual CNFR champions. Champions like alumna Jackie Hobbs-Crawford, who made history at this year’s Wrangler National Finals Breakaway Roping competition, taking the event’s inaugural crown and scoring her 20th world title. By the time Jackie graduated from Tarleton, she had three NIRA individual national titles and two team crowns, earning induction into the university’s Rodeo Hall of Fame.

It’s Up To All of Us

“KEEPING GENERATIONS ON THE ROAD” ® If they’re going to rodeo, somebody’s gotta teach ‘em. Whether it’s roping, cutting or riding bareback, they’re not going to learn it on their own. But if someone shows them the way and they work hard enough, they might just find themselves on the circuit. And if that happens, they’re going to need a truck. The way we see it, a cowboy’s truck needs to be as dependable as his horse – each one doing its part to help the other get to one more show. It’s why there’s nothing more important to us than keeping generations on the road.
