WELCOME LETTER

WELCOME W

elcome to the 2022 Spring edition of American Buckle Magazine. We have another action-packed issue with lots of great stories, including interviews with some of the world’s top rodeo athletes. In this edition, we had the pleasure of interviewing PBR veteran João Ricardo Vieira. In our feature, we discuss his outstanding 18-year career and examine why this year may be the year he finally wins the world champion title he deserves. Though he’s been a top-five bull rider for eight of the last ten seasons, he’s always fallen short of winning the gold buckle. If he claims it this year, he’ll be the oldest bull rider in PBR history to do so. The Wrights are no strangers to gold buckles and top-level rodeo competition, and 22-year-old Stetson Wright is living up to the family name. He’s already a five-time PRCA world champion, and he’s well on his way to shattering records in all-around, bull riding, and saddle bronc. We spoke with Wright, who talked about competing in multiple events per night and the friendly competition between him and his brothers, all of whom compete in saddle bronc as well. He shares his secrets to winning, which come from hard work, family, and taking guidance from his father, two-time PRCA saddle bronc world champion Cody Wright. This year, the PBR kicks off its exciting new Team Series competition. This 11-week tour brings rodeo to a whole new level, where athletes go from individual competition to competing as part of a team. The league has established eight teams, and a draft will take place in May with coaches already in place. The series is sure to develop camaraderie and teamwork among the PBR community.

CBD is a rapidlygrowing industry, and Flora CBD’s CBDips give cowboys a new way to chew. We chat with Flora CBD CEO Bryan Ruiz, who shares the health benefits of CBDips and how this innovative new product is helping cowboys quit nicotine. If you’re an animal lover, you’ll want to check out our feature on MagnaWave. MagnaWave specializes in animal PEMF therapy and offers treatment options for racehorses, show animals, bucking bulls and pets. Over the past two decades, the company has grown to include an expansive network of more than 4000 certified MagnaWave practitioners. PEMF, short for pulsed electromagnetic fields, involves using a device to target specific body parts with pulsing magnetic energy. These magnetic waves are painfree and can penetrate the skin to stimulate muscles, tendons, and joints. In doing so, it makes the cellular membrane more permeable, which in turn allows cells to take in more oxygen and accelerates their release of toxins. Finally, as always, we want to say a special thanks to all of our sponsors and staff who make this magazine a success. Keep an eye out for the Fall edition in late August! Chris Dize Publisher

I believe I have evolved a lot since these two buckles from Rookie Of The Year. ~

-JOAO RICARDO VIEIRA

AFTER A DECADE WITH THE PBR, THE BRAZILIAN BULL RIDER IS READY TO TAKE HOME THE WORLD CHAMPION TITLE HE DESERVES.

I

t’s hard to believe it’s been a decade since João Ricardo Vieira emigrated from his home Pilar Do Sul, São Paulo, Brazil, to join the PBR in the US. While he seemingly burst on the scene out of nowhere to become PBR Rookie of the Year in 2013, he was already an established bull rider in his country when he had the opportunity to try his luck in the States. It was a long time coming. Before arriving in the US at 28 years old, Vieria already had several years of professional rodeo experience under his belt. The Brazillian rodeo community heralded him as one of the nation’s best bull riders. In Brazil, he claimed the national champion title at the university level his first year on the circuit. He went on to win some of Brazil’s biggest rodeos and had ridden in Barretos, the country’s biggest rodeo. He also rode in a major championship series called the Top Team Cup.

Photo: Andy Watson / bullstockmedia.com

But, it was his stint with PBR Brazil that sealed his fate. In 2012, he was named PBR Brazil’s Rookie of the Year. “PBR Brazil was just a ticket to come to the US,” he says. Vieria’s family stayed behind in his home country, and he arrived in America knowing no English and unfamiliar with the culture. His loved ones wouldn’t be able to join him until a year later, which he describes as one of the biggest personal challenges of his career. Perhaps those difficult times were what pushed him to do so well during that first year. Competing alongside world-class riders such as J.B. Mauney and Silvano Alves, Vieira placed third in the world rankings that year while also claiming PBR’s Rookie of the Year title. That season was only a preview of what was to come. Since then, he’s racked up more than $3 million in career earnings, more than 50 90-point rides, and 36 event wins. “I believe evolution is fundamental for you to be successful here in the US,” he says. “I believe I have evolved a lot since these two buckles from Rookie Of The Year.”

INSIDE THE PBR

THE BATTLE FOR THE WORLD CHAMPION BUCKLE His feats place him among the most consistent bull riders ever to tour with the PBR. The mere fact that his career spans 18 years is an accomplishment in and of itself, as the ever-present risk of injury often puts talented riders down and out after just a few years. This year may be special for Vieira. Though he’s been a top five bull rider for eight of the last ten seasons, he’s always fallen short of the world champion title. If he claims it this year, he’ll be the oldest bull rider in the PBR to do so. The past few years represent some of the most competitive bull riding in PBR history. In 2017, José Vitor Leme took the rodeo world by storm when he went six-for-six in the PBR World Finals. Leme soon proved he’s a force to reckon with, earning back-to-back world champion titles in 2020 and 2021. This season, Leme has struggled to compete at the level he has in previous years. In the meantime, Vierira’s steady and consistent placements have put him at the top of the rankings. As the 2022 PBR World Finals approach, Leme is fourth in the world rankings, nearly 230 points behind Vieira. It may be the perfect storm of circumstances for Vieira to claim the title. Still, when it comes to rodeo, there are no guarantees. That’s something Vieria knows all too well. Days before the 2020 PBR World Finals, while holding second in the standings and eyeing a real shot at the world champion title, Vieria tested positive for COVID-19 and had to bow out of the competition. While it’s impossible to know how he might have fared, it was a tough break for him in that he didn’t even have a fair chance to try to claim the gold buckle. As he prepares for this year’s PBR World Finals, which will take place May 13-22 at the Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, Texas, he plans to stay the course by tapping into the discipline driving his successful season. “The preparation, the mind, has to work the same way as any other event,” he says. And, of course, training is key to success, just as it’s always been. This combination of physical and mental fortitude is why Vieria is a top contender year after year. He outlines a few practices that help account for his consistent placements. “Work every week, every bull, and keep training discipline. Learn from mistakes,” he says. “Always try to be better.”

INSIDE THE PBR

Photo: Andy Watson / bullstockmedia.com

NO SIGNS OF STOPPING Regardless of what happens at the PBR World Finals, Vieira is optimistic about the future. This year’s shortened PBR season format is working out well for him, and he’s managed to stay in good health the entire time. “You have to be healthy,” he says. “It’s a short season. If you get hurt, you’re not going to do well. The upside is that if you’re healthy and can beat the bulls, you have a good chance.” Once the World Finals conclude, he’s likely to be a top draft pick for the inaugural PBR Team Series. The Team Series is

a new tour format that pits teams of five riders against one another in a tournament-style format throughout 11 events. The series begins with a draft on May 23 and culminates in a finale event to be held from Nov. 4-6 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. “The PBR has always tried to improve or evolve the sport of bull riding,” he says of the team-based event series. “I believe it will be a success. I’m looking forward to it.” And while he may be one of the PBR’s older riders, he’s not slowing down. Retirement doesn’t seem to be in the cards. But, like anything in rodeo, that could change in an instant. “I don’t know when I’m going to do it. Everyone has a feeling,” he says. “I feel good, and it keeps me on top of the bulls.” Still, he recognizes getting older has its challenges. “When you are older, your body is more fragile, so you need to dedicate yourself more, be disciplined,” he says. “A bull rider can’t be lazy. He needs to go to the gym and ride bulls. This week I rode new bulls to adjust my moves.” This unfettered willingness to adapt to anything life throws at him guides his success, whether in the arena or in his personal life. “That’s the secret,” he says. “To be dignified and courageous. You can’t be afraid.” Photo: Andy Watson / bullstockmedia.com

INSIDE THE PRCA

A

t only 22 years old, Stetson Wright already holds five PRCA world champion titles. He won three consecutive all-around titles from 2019 through 2021, and he was world champion in bull riding in 2020 and saddle bronc in 2021. God willing, he’ll add more gold buckles to his collection this year. He is currently ranked number one in bull riding and number two in saddle bronc, meaning he’s also well on his way to earning his fourth all-around title. It’s hard enough to reach the top of the rankings in any rodeo event, so reaching it in two seems nearly impossible. However, Stetson is eager to be both the best saddle bronc rider and bull rider the PRCA has ever seen. As part of the so-called Wright family dynasty, which spans three generations and has produced five PRCA saddle bronc world champions, rodeo is in his blood. Stetson’s father is twotime world champion and 13-time NFR qualifier Cody Wright,

one of the greatest saddle bronc riders in PRCA history. While the years go by and the family grows, the Wright brothers and uncles continue to push the limits of what is possible in rodeo. Now, Stetson is leading the way. He has not only lived up to the family name in saddle bronc, but he has also brought the family reputation for hard work and discipline to his bull riding career. It’s not an exaggeration to say he’s on track to become one of the most successful athletes in PRCA history. Though the Wrights have been profiled in the New York Times and several documentaries, including 60 Minutes on CBS, Stetson doesn’t let it go to his head. As a result, he’s refreshingly grounded. “The gold buckle is something we’ve always wanted,” he says. “But it for dang sure doesn’t mean you’re any better of a person than someone who doesn’t have one. That’s one thing we all learned before we even thought we wanted to rodeo.”

PUTTING FAMILY FIRST Growing up as rodeo royalty may seem like a lot of pressure, but Stetson doesn’t let other people’s expectations get to him. He describes his family life as “pretty awesome” and spends most weekends competing at PRCA events alongside his brothers and other members of the Wright clan. Traveling across the country in pursuit of high scores and paydays, they spend a lot of time on the road together. “It’s hard on all of us because we got families back at home that we want to get back to,” Stetson says. “It makes going on the road a lot more fun when there’s five or six guys who want it just as bad as you do.” While he’ll always support and respect his fellow broncriding family members, they’re still his biggest competition. “I think the only disadvantage is riding against five or six guys that ride the exact same way as you,” he says lightheartedly. The mere fact that he competes with his brothers fosters a sense of sibling rivalry. They often try to beat each other’s scores on specific horses. “We’re definitely brothers, so we tease each other about who’s going to win each night. We always keep it pretty fun,” he says. “I think they get sick of me. But I’m kind of the jokester in the family. I like to tease them all the time, and they probably get tired of me.” Fortunately, Stetson is justified in giving his brothers a good ribbing. With his 2022 saddle bronc season earnings totaling around $84,000 so far, he’s currently more than $20,000 ahead of the next highest-earning Wright. That would be his 24-year-old brother, two-time world champion Ryder Wright, who is currently ranked third. He also competes against his 26-year-old brother Rusty Wright, who finished fourth in earnings in 2020, and 18-yearold Statler Wright, who recently began his PRCA career.

There’s also his uncle, 31-year-old Spencer Wright, who won the world title and Wrangler NFR average title in 2014, and his uncle-in-law CoBurn Bradshaw, who won the Wrangler NFR average in 2018. Uncles Jake Wright and Jesse Wright, who are twins, are also longtime PRCA competitors in saddle bronc. Still, it’s all healthy competition. “We dang for sure make sure we don’t knock each other’s confidence down,” he says. “My dad’s always taught us to stay even keel. Don’t ride the high or don’t ride the low. Just try to stay even keel.” Stetson may not technically compete with his father, who is semi-retired from rodeo, but he has shown that he can still outdo his father. At the Fort Worth Stock Show and

24

ABM | 2022 VOLUME 1

Rodeo earlier this year, he broke his father’s arena record with a score of 91.5, just half a point higher than Cody’s score from 2011. Breaking his own father’s record might be a significant achievement, but for Stetson, it’s cause for reflection. If he breaks his father’s record, there’s a sense he wants to feel confident that he earned it. “He set that record ten years ago. So, I don’t know. Maybe the judges forgot about it,” he muses. “I’d have to watch the video to see if it was even a question, to see if I should be sharing it with him or he should still have it.” It shows how seriously he takes his career. Even as he carves out his path in the PRCA, his father’s legacy guides him. When Stetson’s not on the road, he and the rest of the Wrights stay busy with family. They might spend time working on their father’s 40 acres of property or helping out one of the brothers at their home. He cherishes the time he spends with his daughter. He describes two-year-old Kingsley Rey as a “big personality” who likes horses and bulls. “She always watches me every night that I’m up, and if I get bucked off, she’s the first one to say ‘Oh no!’ or get excited when I stay on,” he says.

DOUBLING DOWN Though he’s undoubtedly honoring his parents and living up the family name, his path deviates in that he competes in both saddle bronc and bull riding. For Stetson, double the danger means double the rewards. Despite the family’s longtime dedication to saddle bronc, he knew he wanted to be an all-around champion early on. It’s a rodeo athlete’s dream to compete at a professional level in any one event, so it’s especially impressive that Wright is a leading contender in two. Despite competing in two events at once, Wright remains steadfast. He may ride as many as three bucking horses and one bull, or three bulls and a horse, on a single night.

Although rodeo events are physically intense, he says the true rigor is in the mental game. “That’s why a lot of guys have a hard time coming back from injuries. Because all they’re worried about is trying not to get hurt instead of riding,” he says. This is something he knows firsthand. After injuring his jaw in 2019, he says he had difficulty bouncing back. It took a year and a half to restore his confidence fully. “I was worried about not being able to provide for my daughter, and I started focusing on the wrong things and not why I loved it. Once I finally got back under control, it seems like I haven’t had one of those bad thoughts cross through my head,” he says. These are all lessons he learned from his father.

26

ABM | 2022 VOLUME 1

“My dad always taught me it’s 90 percent mental, and the rest is in your head,” he says. His father will always be his hero, no matter how much he earns or how many buckles he wins. “Outside of being, in my opinion, one of the greatest bronc riders to ever live, he can teach it. Shoot, there’s seven to 10 gold buckles to prove that he’s the best teacher in the world,” he says. “That’s why I’ve always set out to be just like my dad.”

hen Alane Paulley first heard about an emerging therapeutic treatment called pulsed electromagnetic field therapy (PEMF), she, like millions of others worldwide, was skeptical of its benefits. Her father, Pat Ziemer, had recently become an advocate of the technology, which purported to be a non-invasive way to treat issues like pain and inflammation with no side effects. It sounded too good to be true. It’s been many years since her father offered to treat the man who would eventually become Paulley’s husband. Her then-beau was suffering from back pain due to his job in landscaping, and she was embarrassed by her father’s offer to treat him. But several days later, when her boyfriend told her he was returning to see her father for follow-up treatment, she quickly became a believer. “That was the moment I realized it really worked for him,” Paulley says. “That’s why I’m here today.” In 2012, Paulley joined her father’s company, MagnaWave, and is now the company president. Ziemer and his wife, Debi, founded the Louisville-based company more than 20 years ago with the goal of improving animal welfare through PEMF. MagnaWave specializes in PEMF

treatment for animals, including racehorses, show animals, bucking bulls and pets. Over the past two decades, the company has grown to include an expansive network of more than 4000 certified MagnaWave practitioners. Though there was a time when PEMF was considered an alternative treatment, it’s now a go-to therapy option for animals and humans, backed by numerous studies and scientific research. The treatment involves using a device to target specific body parts with pulsing waves of magnetic fields. These waves are pain-free and can penetrate up to several inches in the body to stimulate muscles, tendons, and joints.

In doing so, it makes the cellular membrane more permeable, which in turn allows cells to take in more oxygen and accelerates their release of toxins. “Basically, the cells become healthier,” Ziemer says. “If we can make the cells healthy, they can better do their job of inflammation reduction and helping the body heal in other areas.” “Specifically, the benefit is inflammation reduction. Almost all pain comes from inflammation. And so, an animal will have stress in their knee or their ankle, or their heart or their back. If we can relieve that inflammation, then they are in a better position to heal themselves,” he says. While MagnaWave will reduce inflammation in the short term, animal owners can also use it on healthy animals to maintain their overall well-being. Like humans, animals may suffer from aches and pains related to routine activities, so regular sessions can ease pain that’s not obvious and can promote relaxation. “I like to call it cellular massage,” says Paulley. “We’re giving the cells the energy they need to function at their best, and that feels a lot like a massage.”

MAGNAWAVE IN THE EQUINE INDUSTRY Though the science may be difficult to comprehend, it’s impossible to deny the results. Equine industry experts were among the first to adopt MagnaWave as a therapeutic treatment option. Horses may be skittish by nature, and as a result, it can be challenging to get them to cooperate when treating them for ailments such as pain and stress. 38

ABM | 2022 VOLUME 1

It got to the point that trainers were saying to their veterinarian, ‘When I use this on my horse, I get results.’ -PAT ZIEMER

MagnaWave’s non-invasive approach made it an attractive option for treating horse injuries and everyday aches and pains. Many horse owners found it a superior option to shots or other treatments. “It got to the point that trainers were saying to their veterinarian, ‘When I use this on my horse, I get results. You need to pay attention to this,” Ziemer says.” And then, the veterinarians started paying attention and working with us more closely.” Not only does it treat aches and pains, but it also has the effect of calming and soothing animals. According to Paulley, some enjoy the treatment so much that even if they’re otherwise skittish, they’ve learned to ease up when they hear the machine. Word travels fast among animal professionals, and it wasn’t long before farmers and ranchers began inquiring about MagnaWave for their show animals and livestock.

Bucking bull owners and stock contractors also sought MagnaWave as a viable treatment option for their injured and stressed animals. Having seen its impact on horses, they quickly realized that treating their bulls could be advantageous in helping the animals to perform at their maximum potential both inside and outside of the arena. “They kind of picked it up themselves,” Paulley says of the bucking bull community. “We had about 10 or 15 big bull riding people who picked it up and started showing us how they were using it in the chute. We learned a lot from them.” For example, it’s not uncommon for a bucking bull owner to hire a masseuse to help treat an injury or enhance the animal athlete’s well-being. However, using MagnaWave in addition to massage can further enhance these benefits. Because MagnaWave improves circulation, relaxes muscles and relieves basic aches and pains, it allows the masseuses to give the animals deeper massages. This translates to success in the arena.

It can also assist in training bucking bulls. Paulley has seen firsthand how MagnaWave therapy can help ease these animals into training with bucking dummies and loading into chutes, which puts them at the top of their game. “The bulls perform better. They kick higher. They feel better, so they’re performing better,” she says. “That’s a win-win without having to do any shots or injections. We’re talking 30 minutes a day, once a week. They’re seeing these amazing results, and it’s making it easier for them to do their jobs,” she says.

HEALTHIER, HAPPIER ANIMALS For those interested in using MagnaWave to help their animals, MagnaWave offers a map where you can find the closest practitioner to you. Certified practitioners are subject to a thorough training program that includes about 40 hours of video. However, it’s also common for people who have witnessed positive results from the treatment to invest in their own systems for personal use on their farms or ranches. From June 8-10, thousands of MagnaWave users will gather in Louisville for MagnaCon, an event designed to educate practitioners about new research developments and products while also bringing the community together. Devices start at $5,950, though machines designed for professional business use may cost around $14,000. However, MagnaWave offers a “Try Before You Buy” program, which allows animal owners to rent their preferred device for a month to see if it’s right for them. All products come with a ten-year warranty. In addition to the machines themselves, the company also sells PEMF pet mats, which range from $1,350 to $1,425. The pet bed releases PMEF waves, and often, Paulley finds pets will willingly lay in the bed because of the soothing nature of the pulses. “The response is so amazing. And the owners are amazed because the animal doesn’t fake it,” she says. While it’s not a substitute for veterinary treatment, users often use it in tandem. Ziemer encourages animal owners to give it a shot. “You have nothing to lose and everything to gain,” Ziemer says. “We’re passionate about it,” Paulley says. “Because there is no better high in the world than when somebody calls you and says, ‘You’ve changed my animal’s life, and in turn, changed my life.’”

ipping is a common habit among cowboys. While the first time trying chew can feel like a rite of passage, it often kickstarts a lifelong habit that can lead to permanent tooth damage, heart and blood pressure issues, and several different types of cancer. Quitting is a complicated process, particularly for those accustomed to the sensation of tobacco between their cheek and their gum. But what if there was a way to replicate that sensation with an alternative that provides health benefits? Instead of nicotine, the product could contain something that promotes a person’s physical and mental wellbeing. It would help longtime tobacco dippers kick the habit or could simply be a soothing agent for anyone who prefers bold, all-natural products. That was the thinking behind Flora CBD’s CBDips, an innovative cannabidiol (CBD) product meant for chewing. Available in flavors such as Wintergreen, Bourbon, Cinnamon, and Southern Peach, these dips deliver all the natural benefits of CBD while stimulating one’s senses. Perhaps most importantly, CBDips are entirely tobacco-free.

CBD promotes a healthy lifestyle by fostering increased energy, inner balance, improved sleep quality, peace of mind, relaxation, and productivity. Accordingly, people worldwide use it to address stress, sleep quality, and pain management. There are many different ways to ingest or apply CBD, and they vary based on the user’s preference. For example, Flora CBD sells oils, which users can drop under their tongue, as well as chewable gummies and topical creams that people can rub on their skin to target specific areas. However, Flora CBD’s CBDips introduces an innovative way to enjoy their products.

CBD: An Effective Tool For The Health-Conscious Cowboy

We wanted to help all folks be able to pack a lip and know they were doing something that helps them in everyday life be healthier. -Bryan Ruiz CBDips are made with non-GMO full-spectrum hemp flowers and are all-natural, plant-based, vegan, and gluten-free. Flora CBD tests the dips in third-party laboratories, ensuring the product’s quality, purity, and effectiveness. This rigorous process ensures CBDips contain all the beneficial properties of hemp without any unnatural substances like pesticides, metals, or tobacco. The dips are available as both long cut dip, which is the type that’s loose in a can, and as pouches. Both options offer users a convenient and fast-acting consumption method. Additionally, unlike tobacco dips, users can opt to swallow CBDips when they’re done. With its high commitment to quality, Flora CBD is a recognized leader in the CBD industry. Major media companies, including FOX, Forbes, NBC, and Digital Journal, have featured the company’s products. Such media interest is a testament to the public’s growing interest in CBD and its many benefits.

50

ABM | 2022 VOLUME 1

CBD use is popular with rodeo athletes. Today’s rodeo superstars are typically far more health-conscious than their predecessors. Constantly under pressure to perform and frequently burdened with injuries, it’s no surprise that the best and brightest are finding relief in CBD. Bareback rider and six-time PRCA World Champion Kaycee Feild is on record sharing how CBD assisted him in his recovery after suffering a brain bleed in 2019. PBR bull rider and seventime World Finals qualifier Matt Triplett has also endorsed CBD, explaining how CBD drops and topical creams help ease him through the everyday aches, pains, and stresses. While it’s easy to understand why rodeo athletes might turn to CBD, cowboys and cowgirls of all backgrounds can also benefit from CBD. Bryan Ruiz, the founder of Flora CBD, has firsthand knowledge of how CBD can help address a variety of health ailments that impact individuals in industries such as farming, ranching, and other western pursuits. “I belong to a family ranch in Metter, Georgia. We produce beef cattle and sheep along with hay all year long, so I know what it’s like to work hard from dawn to dusk,” he says. “I also know what it’s like to want to be healthier in our daily lives with as little effort as possible. This is the reason we started CBDip. We wanted to help all folks be able to pack a lip and know they were doing something that helps them in everyday life be healthier.” The long days in the fields and grueling work on the farm can take a toll on a person’s body. However, CBD helps combat those daily aches and pains. “One of the biggest benefits for rodeo cowboys and all ranchers is that CBD fights directly against inflammation. This is something we all suffer from in injuries and just pushing ourselves physically every day,” Ruiz says.

Why Americans Are Choosing CBD Across America, CBD is exploding in popularity. This is partially due to legislation that loosened restrictions on cannabis farming in the US. For decades, federal law did not differentiate between marijuana containing high amounts of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and plants that contain trace amounts, commonly known as hemp. However, the 2018 Farm Bill signed by President Donald Trump granted states the regulatory power to oversee the production and distribution of hemp, defined as cannabis plants that contain no more than 0.3 percent THC. As a result, hempderived products such as CBD became more widely available. Though CBD has numerous benefits, some people remain hesitant to try it. This is due to longstanding misconceptions concerning CBD’s relationship to THC, the psychoactive ingredient in marijuana. The reality is that even though cannabis plants produce both CBD and THC, they are entirely different substances.

HEALTH & LIFESTYLE

Because CBD contains only trace amounts of THC, it doesn’t cause a person to feel “high.” THC works by binding with brain receptors that control pain and mood. This is what causes the “high” sensations. However, CBD doesn’t work the same way, so there are no associated psychoactive feelings, and it won’t show up on drug tests. “For someone who isn’t familiar with CBD, I would tell them to give it a try and see,” Ruiz says. “You have nothing to lose. I’ve seen firsthand how many people around the globe it’s helped, from the mildest of anxiety to pain relief for someone being sent to hospice. I would never say CBD can cure what you’re going through, but it sure can help with recovery.” Although people have used CBD for some time, scientists are still studying its benefits. The Food and Drug Administration has already approved prescription-strength CBD to treat epilepsy, while other research is ongoing. Regardless, there are countless reports of people who have had their own positive experiences with CBD. The Flora CBD team recently heard from a woman who uses CBDips to help ease a medical condition. She suffers from a rare disorder called burning mouth syndrome, which causes a burning sensation in the mouth but has no apparent cause. “Her doctor recommended CBDip. The dip was able to help her relieve her burning mouth sensation,” says Miguel Comas, an account manager for TFC Marketing who works directly with Flora CBD. “That’s a bit of what we believe in with CBDips and Flora as a brand.”

ichard Childress grew up in Winston-Salem, NC, wearing Wranglers and watching The Lone Ranger. Rumbling engines, squealing rubber, and checkered flags would be Childress’ path to glory as one of the most storied and successful team owners in stock car racing history. All throughout, the 16-time NASCAR Championship owner’s fascination for and affinity to cowboys has never faded. He’s proudly lived the Western lifestyle his whole life. Childress keeps prized photos of rodeos he attended with his grandsons Ty and Austin, who’d grow up to pilot the famed No. 3 Richard Childress Racing (RCR) Chevrolet, once driven by Dale Earnhardt Sr. to six championships before a fatal wreck at Daytona International Speedway in 2001 took “The Intimidator” and shook the entire sports world. Among Childress’ highest highs in the sport that can produce gut-punch devastation was celebrating with Austin in victory lane after his grandson drove that iconic No. 3 Chevy

to the checkers at the 2018 Daytona 500, 20 years after Earnhardt, following years of heartbreak, had finally won “The Great American Race.” On a glorious spring morning in North Carolina this past March, grandfather and grandson rolled out a racecar with a striking paint scheme – for the Carolina Cowboys, a bull riding team in the new PBR Team Series. Childress and Dillon are gunning for an equally challenging trophy – the golden belt buckle signifying bull riding supremacy, as they operate one of eight new teams which will compete in five-on-five bull riding games beginning in July, leading to a championship in Las Vegas in November.

Like Childress, each new team owner is introducing pro bull riding to new audiences, partners, and possibilities. They form an ownership group of savvy entrepreneurs, bringing impressive track records and experience as they invest in the wide-open opportunity available in the exploding Western sports and lifestyle space. Just as motorsports media are suddenly paying attention to bull riding, legendary newsman Billy Morris of Morris Communications which owns the Nashville Stampede, now has his media outlets promoting bull riding. World-famous entrepreneur Johnny Morris, founder of Bass Pro Shops, will make his Missouri Thunder team an anchor attraction of the spectacular new Thunder Ridge Amphitheater in the Ozarks. And sports mash-ups for the new bull riding league go beyond fast cars. Egon Durban, owner of the Austin Gamblers, is co-CEO of Silver Lake, whose investment portfolio includes ownership in the Manchester City Football Club and NYC FC MLS Club as well as Madison Square Garden, which owns the Knicks (NBA) and Rangers (NHL). Similarly, Arizona Ridge Riders owner entertainment disruptor Thomas Tull of Teton Ridge, the founder and former CEO of Legendary Entertainment, which made blockbuster films such as The Dark Knight, Watchmen, Superman Returns, The Hangover franchise, Godzilla, and We Are Marshall, brings crossover sports experience through his stake in the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Add baseball and soccer into the mix as well: the Texas Rattlers are under retail impresario John Fisher of the Gap, who owns the Oakland Athletics and San Jose Earthquakes. Austin Gamblers CEO JJ Gottsch spent 24 years in Minor League Baseball, playing instrumental roles in establishing two of MiLB’s most successful teams in Texas. And Oklahoma Freedom team operator, Prodigal Sports, owned by the Funk family, also owned MiLB’s Oklahoma City Dodgers. The team owners have seized the opportunity to join a successful sport that will benefit from their investments and marketing prowess as each team builds a local fan base to be treated to a festival-like atmosphere surrounding each team’s three-day homestands during the 11-event season. (The Teams season will start with a neutral-site event at Cheyenne Frontier Days on July 15-16 with another neutralsite bull riding in Anaheim. Team Finals will be held at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas Nov 4-6.)

“The owners are stepping into an established sport that’s now expanding with a format that’s been tested in our Global Cups, the Monster Energy Team Challenge that kept us going during the summer of 2020 when other sports were shut down, and aboard the USS Lexington aircraft carrier for team events raising hundreds of thousands of dollars for charity,” said PBR CEO and Commissioner Sean Gleason. “At every one of these team events, the competition rose a notch and the atmosphere was even more electric.” PBR didn’t hire consultants to sell the team sanctions. The organization simply reached out to businesspeople who get the magic of the sport and see its potential in bursting into the mainstream as society pines for simpler times, open spaces, and values cowboy values like courage, honesty, and trust.

At every one of these team events, the competition rose a notch and the atmosphere was even more electric. -SEAN GLEASON PBR is taking the proverbial bull by the horns to make its biggest play yet in an effort to take an already exciting sport to new heights by adding professional coaches, bigger local events, and new fan rooting interests. Gleason says that with the new league in action following the individual elite Unleash The Beast tour (which now runs November to May), annual compensation for the average toplevel bull rider will double. PBR’s boss believes that money will help draw more athletes to the sport. Meantime, the new ownership blood and team dynamics will help elevate PBR. For example, in approaching the inaugural May 23 rider draft and then operating its team, RCR will apply its sophisticated analytical programs used to find speed in NASCAR to help cowboys make their eight seconds more consistently on bulls whose tendences can be studied. Race teams understand sports psychology. GM Austin Dillon sees similarities between the two sports in the crucial mental game. Photo: Andy Watson / bullstockmedia.com

“In racing and bull riding, there are veterans, and there are guys just having families,” he said. “Everyone has things going on mentally in their lives. We are looking to form a team of young guys with a burning desire to win who can work together and respect one another, want to learn from each other, and ultimately get better together.” The upcoming Team Draft will set the teammates as well as rooting interests. The riders are anticipated to take their performance up a notch with coaching and the motivation of riding for more than individual goals. “Team events were always my favorite events to go to all year long,” said 2016 PBR World Champion Cooper Davis. “They elevate everyone’s riding. It’s almost a magical feeling when you don’t want to let your teammates down and things are rolling well.” Richard Childress, who started his race team in 1969 and has won more than 200 races at NASCAR’s top three national series, lives on his terms (he recently donated one million rounds of ammunition to Ukrainians under attack) and thrives on heated competition, whether its winning 500-mile races or producing award-winning wines at the Childress Winery, located on 72 rolling acres in Lexington, NC. Now, teaming up with his equally competitive grandson, he’s doggedly pursuing a new championship. “Winning that gold belt buckle in Las Vegas will be success,” he said. “That’s the Carolina Cowboys’ goal. And that’s why I’m in it.” He, and seven other highly competitive owners with eyes equally focused on the newest prize in team sports.
