AROUSING VILLAGERS’ CULTURAL PRIDE

SCENE 1 Living in Hengkeng ancient village

We lived in Painter Ai’s home in ancient village for a week to experience the really feel of native residents and to research the condition of ancient building in it and talked with villagers deeply.

To establish a cultural community, the most crucial points are common pride generating on common precious things and the affection between members. Ancient village is the so called most vital precious things. However, ancient village buidings suffered 18.7% removement and 89% disrepair because some villagers demolished them for rental income and their weak cultural conscious. As a result, our first step is to foster the cultural consciouness of villagers and spur them to develop ancient village by themself . As a consequence , we hold a series of activities in Hengkeng to arouse villagers’ cultural pride and to assemble strengths caring about Hengkeng from all works of life. SCENE 2

Painting competition

We hold a painting competition headlined “ancient village in my eyes” for kids and taught them painting techniques ,so our action won kids’ parent’s trust and lead their attention to the ancient village. SCENE 3 Painting exhibition

We hold a exhibition using the paintings of children , painter Ai’s works and our photographic works as exhibits . Finally, it aroused seniors memory in ancient village, stimulated their discussion and influented the young adults in their familys. SCENE 4 First tea party

We convened people possess power in field of economy, culture and politics at tea party. Our professor said: “ Once old buildings are demolished, it lost other possiblities!” SCENE 5 Second tea party

Painter Ai enjoys high prestige in Hengkeng, since he designed the last layout for Hengkeng . He said:” Only when there are villagers living in ancient village, can this place be full of vigour. SCENE 6 Third tea party

Our dean, professor wang participated the general planning of Liaobu 10 years ago and persuaded the former mayor of hengkeng to preserve the ancient village. He said:” if you demolish all the ancient buildings, your descendants will not recognize their ancestor.” SCENE 7 Third tea party

Chief of house bureau of Dongguan city, decided to apply allocation for ancient village’s conservation and development after listening our planning for ancient village and dicussion of representatives of Hengkeng. SCENE 8 Third tea party

Representatives of Hengkeng finally decided to establish an autonomous committee to manage economic development and cultural conservation of Hengkeng, after our team’s three months’ value diffusion .

VILLAGE INDUSTRY ANALYSIS

Economic power strongly supports the common pride . We designed three different type industries for three parts of ancient village according to their locations, building conditions and historical contexts. Therefore , we divide the village as three parts: creative industry district, agarwood cultural resort district and ancient village cultural experience district. At addition, Hengkeng is close to huge consumer market of city center (10 min drive) and origin of products being sold here.

COST OF ANCIENT VILLAGE MAINTENANC

After calculation, we knew that the one-year net profit of industrial operation in ancient village is 319,831,037.9 yuan, and the cost ancient village maintenance is 1,594,000,000 yuan, so will just cost 5 years for village to make ends meet. From then on , the ancient village will keep on gaining profits with a good operation.

To establish a cultural community, the most crucial points are common cultural pride generating form common precious things and the affection between members. Therefore ,in the spatial strategy, we motivate villagers to stay in village for a period of life by:

1.Expanding general public space:

1.Providing spaces for the cultural dissemination activities: education, production, entertainment and creation and combining new elements suitable for mordern needs into these activities. 2.Encouraging each villager to spend a period of their lifetime in village to emerge ancient village in their memories..

EXPANDING GENERAL PUBLIC SPACE : Fair street FOR ADULTS / PRODUCTION We plan to tear down fences ,since function of buildings transforms into commercial use, building should increase the space which contacts with consumers. Most important ,this new industry provides employments for young villagers, give them chance to contact with each other and spur them to create new culture during working.

EXPANDING GENERAL PUBLIC SPACE : Kindergarten: FOR CHILDREN / EDUCATION We hope the kids of Hengkeng can spend their childhood in ancient village, as we know, the memory of childhood is extremely unforgotable ,if it can connect with ancient village, thus children will estabilsh a profound emotion with ancient village and villagers having the same experience. We connect several dwellings into a kindergaten with rounded corners which are safe for kids and indoor garden for children to contact nature.

OUR INTERVENTIONS OF LAND FINANCE BY ADVANTAGES OF STATE-OWNED ENTERPROSES

In front of the drawbacks of land finance, fortunately,we can exploit the advantages of state-owned enterprises: They have more autonomy-- no longer develop along the way of land finance; They do not regard purchasing maximum profits as the single goal, most important, it also possesses social responsiblity. Therefore, we plan to intervene this system mainly by two joints:

1.Changing the direction of financing: nowadays, large amount of capitals have rushed to the real estate .It has lead to the too high housing price and the too single industry, which has generated overload of people and an unhealthy economic operation. Therefore, what about leading the financing to MORE FREEDOM to decide : the industries and proportion of different industries.

technology? That is certain industry may greatly improve human’s quality of life, meanwhile ,achieve

The most vital function of state-own enterprises is to regulate national ecoonomy and make it march forward in a healthy direction. Further, they possesses greater autonomy, so they can carry out an unprecedented plan to search a considerable way of land finance.

2.Regulating the process of reproduction: Nowadays, market is always occupied by huge

economic advance. It is much better than financing real estate round after round. What ‘s worst, it has created lots of empty cities with few people in China. It is really a huge waste of resources. capitals, it is evitable for the small companies being purchased by the huge ones. However, lots of products providing by small companies are valuable for people. Thus, in OCT, we plan to supply favourable condition for the growth of these small companies. Preferential policy and venture capitals from the capital reproduction will provide for the entrepreneurs. Gradually ,self organization appear, people not only can working freely but also have more finance to define their houses assisting by professional architcture and planner and OCT will built the public infrastructures as a skeleton for the indivdual houses growing.

NOITAZINABRU Site: China Greater Bay Area Type: Academic (solo work) Time: 09/2018 - 12/2018 Delivery: Vedio, Modle and drawing.

As a result of the GBA’s high rate of urbanization, immense quantities of natural landscape have been lost. This loss is not just physical, but qualitative. One of the most significant qualities lost is vastness. Simultaneously, huge amounts of soil have been continuously excavated and denuded as part of the process of urbanization. A new island, NOITAZINABRU, at the geographic center of the Pearl River Delta is born from the urbanization activities underpinning the GBA initiative. A monument to this activity, the island offers a deliberately contradictory set of qualities—uninhabited, inaccessible and entirely disconnected—its perceived wildness intended to inspire the collective imagination of the GBA’s populations. At least it appears that way from the outside… In reality, the romantic fantasy of the island is not the whole story of its construction. As fertile earthen material becomes an increasingly scarce and precious resource—both for China and globally—its production is understood as a necessary component of a sustainable economic and political future.

The island keeps inspiring the collective imagination

07 Invisible City Landscape Drawing Invisible city is in everybody’s mind. Our Landscape Drawing class was instructed by Valerio Morabito who was instructed by Italo Calvino. Valerio told us to trust our instinct, our imagination, our memory and our mistakes. Valerio believes that there is a general rule that embed in human’s drawing which maybe is the innate common human instinct. Becasue the ancient carve drawings found all around the world shared a same set of ideogram. The final drawings are led under a theme: Growing City where we organized our invisible cities through 6 diffrent cities.

08 A SELF-EDITING FIELD GUIDE

from the Atlantic Ocean to the Appalachian Mountains

This field guide is about representing the diversity of planting and topography from the Atlantic Ocean to the Appalachian Mountains that was observed during our field trip. In this period, we observed, analyzed and represented ecological and cultural systems and processes through the production of field notebooks as well as large-scale measured drawings. Ultimately we developed a vocabulary (recognition, identification and nomenclature) of the materials of landscape, its substance, its ecology, and its changing nature owing to place and time.
