Jining Cultural Center Location: Jining, China site area: 53,5 ha GFA: 567,000 sqm
international competition
Studio: Logon
Jining culture center, located North East of the Bei Hu Lake. This project focused on the urban design (planned area 53.5 ha, 800mu) of a new commercial center and the architectural design of four cultural centers. The new commercial facilities included spaces specially designed for F&B, Cinema and Bookstores. The new cultural facilities include a city library, public art gallery, municipal heritage museum, and city art museum. The total gross floor area encompassed 567,000sq.m for phase 1 & 2. The design provides a comprehensive layout that considers function, usage and a careful integration of the natural environment.

Office , commercial & S/apt Location: Shanghai, China Site area: 50 000 sqm GFA: 125 000 sqm
Preliminary design
The site is divided into two areas, each with distinctly different atmospheres: the west side being a plaza with high-rises; the east side featuring low office buildings within a small park. Taking cues from existing commercial facilities along the east – west axis, a belt of threestorey-high retail facilities were integrated to run along the main road. This design accommodates an active and vibrant street, while the main plaza offers a collection of quiet places for resting, such as cafes and outdoor seating. The eastern half of the office park provides a calm and pleasant working environment while offering an accessible extension of the green belt and canal side.
The skyline aims to take advantage of the good visibility of the plot from the highway by placing the landmark and the highest buildings on the west side of the plot.

This project aims to reposition and modernize 659 Fengyang Road in Shanghai, an out-of-date 10-storey building erected in the 1990s. The design proposal introduces a dynamic style through the integration of the sloping façade, an element that emphasizes the corner office entrances as well as the showroom shop windows. At the base are showrooms and serviced offices while the upper part accommodates loft-style office spaces. The height of the south facade remains the constant in order to reduce its visual impact from Nanjing road. Meanwhile, the facade is raised on the north side in order to integrate the existing staircase and water tank, thus creating a dynamic skyline. This division of the façade creates two different perceptions of the building. A more open close-range facade for the showrooms and the building access on the first floors and a remote-effect facade design on the top floors. With this approach the facade is used as an extra signage element for the building itself while taking into account its inner functions.

This eco-friendly compound design follows the competition Logon won in a previous stage. The client, interested in 2 of the schemes we presented, asked us to merge the B and C options in the final version. The work has consisted in combining the master plan of C and the facades of B option in 1 scheme. The four towers are arranged on-site in such a way that all the residential units have a south orientation. This situation also gives most of the future tenants a near 360-degree field of view. To break down the massive high-rise forms they are slightly bent and a gap is introduced to divide the area. 2013

The whole project begins from The Highway to the east, at a distance of 1 km, along an important artery to the new city centre. The complex is settled between a residential area on the north and a public green belt, which protects it from the traďŹƒc of Chongchuan on the south. Divided into 3 plots, it consists in 105 000 sqm of R&D and other facilities, and 10 000 sqm of retail. The R&D part is composed of 8 buildings all settled in a green landscape. The highest building on the eastern plot, facing the adjacent park, creates a visible landmark from Chongchuan road and Tongqi highway.

Shangle Shirt Factory Renovation Location: Shanghai, China Site area: 12 000 sqm GFA: 15 500 sqm
Completion: 2013
Studio: Logon The Shanghai Shuangle shirt factory is located in Zhabei district. The surroundings transform with mainly residential and office functions. The site once housed 11 old factory buildings. It has since been converted into a modern office park for small and medium
Temporary buildings were removed and only the 7 main buildings were renovated to accommodate new functions. Car circulation is organized from the south site entrance only in the southern part of the site. The other open spaces are carfree areas, and the outdoor spaces have been landscaped to enhance the green character of the site. The architectural design focused on giving a modern look and a clean appearance to the buildings to refresh the old industrial look of the existing situation. An early goal for this project was to provide good quality office space with a clean and modern design. The result is that the middle part of the long central building acts as a hub as much as a landmark. Its design elements are reused in the composition of the majority of the other facades. 2012

Jining Headquarters Park project is located in the new High Tech development zone of the city. The overall concept follows three main principles: Green Campus: Jining Headquarters set in a lush green campus; all buildings are integrated into an appealing landscape. The green campus provides a calm and pleasant working environment. Image/Landmark: The facades’ design variations in shape, color and height create the Park’s image and landmark, while insuring the distinct identity of each headquarter. Flexibility: Headquarters Park Project provides functional and flexible architecture that fulfills the expectations of different companies’ scale and needs. 2012

YMSK Office Location: Shanghai, China GFA: 50 & 150 sqm
Completion 2009 & 2010
YMSK started to work in Asia as a Hong Kong based architectural firm in partnership with Yamasaki, a renowned American company. At the beginning of 2010, my partner and I, both YMSK’s co-founders, decided to take a step forward, and became independent by opening our first studio in mainland China. Ymsk set up and designed its 50 sqm office in the old French Concession of Shanghai, on the 3rd Floor of a commercial building. Due to the expansion of his business and the increasing number of employes, YMSK then relocated its studio in a tower of Gubei area. The 150 sqm has been designed in the same spirit than the previous office, and could house 22 employees.
Studio: YMSK The main working area is furnished with 1.20m high fiberboard wood partitions with gloss black paint finish, which ensure employees’ intimacy without breaking the whole volume thus allowing people to communicate easily. Red and Orange colors applied on sides of recessed bookcases and square shaped entrance furniture contrast with the gloss black paint finish partitions, reminding of YMSK’s logo and corporate identity with an inspired, unique yet simple design.

Create a space that displays 300 varieties of beer, provides a taste-testing station and a delivery corner with ample storage in a 25 sqm space – all within a challenging budget. This was the task set before YMSK in 2010. The concept embraced the power of curves. Slightly bending shelves from ceiling to floor displayed a large diversity of beers from all over the world. Facing the entrance, partition walls designed to provide accessible but hidden storage in the back of the shop. All the while, the mirrored walls deepen the space and give perusing customers a unique sensation of being surrounded by beer bottles. Following the client’s color chart, curved wood shelves painted in white juxtapose with warm red walls while a dark grey stone counter and concrete flooring make a welcoming entrance. 2010

Sales Center Location: Zhujiajiao-Shanghai, China GFA: 500 sqm
Completion: 2011
Located on a lakeshore, Zhujiajiao Sales Centre offers fantastic views of its lovely landscaped surroundings. YMSK’s challenge was to respect its heritage architecture but adapt and harmonize the interior design with the shape of the building in order to maximize views and later provide a residential complex with private management and luxury-level services.
With a focus on simplicity and contemporary design, Zhujiajiao Sales Centre will first welcome Residential Owners to encompass the site and buy properties and then be converted into a clubhouse for the whole residential area that surrounds it. So YMSK thoughtfully arranged the spaces to be flexible and generous, in order to serve these later functions.
Studio: YMSK
As to unify the whole project, particular attention was paid to circulation and connections between the different parts of each of the three floors. Maximized natural light and expansive views was achieved by creating a double high space lobby allowing more connections between the upper spaces and the entrance. Acrylic polymer curved lines walls and free-shape furniture confer to the centre a comfy and peaceful atmosphere, reinforcing the fluidity of the space and thus creating a smooth transition between the interior design and the building’s façades. 2010

Studio: YMSK
Located along the Yangtze River on top of the Hills, this 45,300 sqm site offers a fantastic view of Chongqing Centre Town. YMSK was hired to conceive a Master Plan including 215,600 sqm of Residential towers and 46,000 sqm of OfďŹ ce and Commercial spaces. In order to maximize private spaces, the land was divided into two zones, residential and commercial, which are then connected through terracing. The landscape, as well as the treatment of the different platforms, creates a smooth and harmonious link from the street to the peak of the hill. Whereby the slope of the existing ground becomes an advantage and allows a theatrical expression of the ascent. On top of the hill, clubhouses maximize views and provide residential complex with a private service management team as well as high-standing sports facilities facing the Yangtze River. 2010
Hospital Location: Chengdu, China Site area: 56 000 sqm GFA: 180 000 sqm
Completed Phase: Preliminary design
YMSK designed facades for a new 12-story office tower adjacent to Chengdu Army Hospital. Located in front of the existing tower, the office tower is a major focus point. Flanked by and auditorium on the East side, the tower has been designed as a scene background. Divided in 3 parts where the horizontality prevails on East and West sides, the pure glass façades act as a monumental gate and follow the East West axis. North and South facades are composed of a glass wall cadenced by concrete columns that accentuate verticality. These columns turn into horizontal louvers to embrace the auditorium.

Yacht Club extension Location: Pinghu-Shanghai, China GFA: 5 000 sqm
Preliminary design
One hour from Shanghai and Hangzhou, stands a new Venetian town sheltered by nine Hills in PingHu, well known as the Nine Dragons Resort. A luxury hotel with residential apartments and villas are articulated around a squared plaza and water canals in front of the sea which you can also admire from a two-storey building built to welcome yacht club members. The club, as originally designed, doesn’t offer views of the seacoast and was deserted by patrons. YMSK was hired to compose with the existing club and to extend it. The idea was to lighten the existing building and, propose a simple and contemporary design for its extension.

Preliminary design
To accommodate the Nine Dragons Horse and Car Races’ tracks, YMSK was asked to design a VIP Club enabling its Members to view races and benefit from a special natural environment in an enclosed and private space. Composed of a restaurant, lounge bar, semi-public and private tribunes and a multi-functional room, this project was an opportunity to serve as a landmark building directly located at the entrance of Nine Dragons Resort. Conceived as a building that expresses a sense of speed, horizontal lines were emphasized as to remind people of network cable lines. Special glass materials maximized views, all spaces were linked with exterior terraces reinforcing the fluidity of this ambitious project.

Office Completion: 2015
The project is located at the heart of Zhangjiang new high technology zone. The site is crossed by the main North-South traffic axis, and divided in 6 plots. So, the challenge consisted in ensuring a strong cohesion between the different parts of the project, despite the actual partition of the site. The project is designed to become the hub of the office Park. It houses a hotel, amenity facilities, shopping mall, commercial and office spaces. The 100 m high tower housed the hotel and becomes the landmark of the project. Its outstanding shape extends through its podium and links the 2 western plots. The 3 office buildings, and the shopping mall, at the east, encircle a central plaza, and offer shops, cafes and restaurants on the 1st floor.

The project site is located west of Lhasa and is surrounded by mountains. The museum is built all along a canal, and houses 3 different departments: Natural Sciences, Arts and Technologies. Its roofing is S-shaped to echoe the surrounding mountain skyline. The double-layered facade features patterns made of the combination of 3 traditional and religious symbols. This sun shading elements permit to control solar input and inner temperature. The shape of the main building, welcome the visitors, and thus symbolise the traditional Hakka scarf offered to the travellers entering Tibet. This part of the Museum represents the origins of Tibetan culture, whereas the cubes set in front of it represent modernity. The past, the present and the future thus meet on the same spot.

Completion 2016
In the Bund proper, there are few changes to the now-classic buildings except for their rotating cast of tenants—high-end shops, restaurants, and bars. But just behind them, a historic block of buildings is being transformed into the Rock bund Project. DCA and Arquitectonica have been working on the million-square-foot project since 2006. DCA is restoring and converting 12 colonial buildings dating from 1897 to 1933 into offices, hotels, retail, apartments, and a museum; eight have been completed. It is adding 11 stories of new construction to a three-story building to create Rock bund 6, which will offer retail and office space. Arquitectonica is constructing five new infill buildings for the block, which respect the massing, materials, and color of their neighbors. Both Arquitectonica and DCA expect to complete their work in 2016.

Rock Bund is a 94,000 square meter urban mixed-use redevelopment project at the historic confluence of the Huangpu River and Suzhou Creek in downtown Shanghai. The project combines the restoration of 11 historical buildings with new, world-class architecture and a new public space infrastructure. Rock Bund will form a major part of the Waitanyuan redevelopment district, a city-led “key development project that will transform the area. Waitanyuan combines new infrastructure, parks, waterfront, historic restoration and new buildings- hotels, boutiques, department stores, theatres and cultural venues and residential space - to revitalize the northern tip of the Bund and create an arts and fashion-forward neighbourhood in Shanghai

The master plan is divided into 2 distinct parts. 10 office buildings occupy the South. The residential and commercial complex is located next to the main access road on the north, and thus enjoys a better visibility. The diversity of functions made us pay a special attention to the car traffic analysis. The elliptic scheme has the advantage to maximize the shops frontage, and to locate the different lobbies access in a same traffic loop.

The new Cultural area of Changchun houses 3 buildings: The science and Technology Centre on the Northeast of the site, the Art museum on its West side, and the 8 000 sqm Art gallery on the south. The first idea that led our concept was to design each building independently, according to their own function’s characteristics. The facades material, the indoor spaces arrangement and proportion, and the atmospheres they release make the visitors experience different feelings along their visit. While the science and Technology Museum spread its 2 floors along the site, the Art gallery is made of 4 vertical layers overhanging the water feature.

International competition
The Art and Performance Centre was planned to open its doors at the occasion of the Shanghai World Expo 2010. The design proposal should not only provide a Landmark building, but it should also focus on safety and flew problems. The indoor stage should also be able to open to the outside, in order to hold outdoor performances. The project presented here offers an outstanding volume where facades look like a composition of paper sheets. This facade treatment helps to visually lighten the building, and brings indirect light through its interstices. At the top, the staff and performers rooms enjoys views, despite the absence of visible windows on the facade.
