MERMAID: Multi-use Offshore Platforms • Facilities such as offshore wind farms occupy large areas and compete with other users of the maritime space. • Aims to develop novel innovative designs for multi-use offshore platforms and assess the technical, economical and environmental feasibility of constructing, installing, operating, servicing, maintaining, transport and decommissioning • UoD acting as foundation and seabed stability modellers • €7.4M EU funded – FP7 ‘Oceans of Tomorrow’ programme • 28 partner institutes: Universities (11), Research institutes (8), Industries (5) and Small and Medium Enterprises (4 SME's) across EU

Test Sites • Deep water site: Atlantic Ocean – Wind + wave together – but not aquaculture

• Sheltered site: Mediterranean – Wind + sea bream/bass was viable – distance to shore?

• Active bed site: Wadden Sea – Wind turbines + seaweed and/or mussels was viable

• Estuarine Site: Baltic Sea – Perfect site for both wind energy and salmonid cultivation
