Golden Elks get first win of season against Indians

continued from B-1

The Indians picked up the intensity for the second half as they stayed within striking distance in the third quarter as their deficit remained in the low double digits for most of the frame as Elkton took a 38-26 lead into the fourth quarter.

After North East cut its deficit to nine points at 4233 midway through the fourth quarter, Elkton found a rhythm again and closed the game on an 8-0 run to clinch the victory

The Golden Elks got contributions from several players on the offensive end, and Sherrod liked what he saw from his offense against the Indians.

“We told the girls about being confident, moving the ball, swinging it around, find- ing the open man and taking what the defense gives them,” Sherrod said. “We saw that all night long, and I’m really proud of everybody’s effort and how they contributed. It speaks volumes about how they trust in each other and trust in us to listen to what we coach.”

Saylor Bare, who led North East with 14 points, said the Indians need to start each game with intensity they played in third and fourth quarters.

“I think we came out a little slow in the first half. As the second half started, we started to get into it,” Saylor Bare said. “We have to come out with intensity every game from start to finish and don’t stop until the buzzer goes off.”
