Biography

Born and raised in S達o Paulo, Brazil; with an amazing family and two amazing parents,

Cris and Julio. They showed her that life is meant to be grasped and that there will always be obstacles but that they can be conquered. Growing up in a bilingual family where English was the primary language and both portuguese and spanish came second enabled Ceci to easily communicate with people on a daily basis. Languages have always been a passion and hobby for her throughout her growing up. Now knowing four languages (English, Portuguese, Spanish and French) has opened multiples doors and windows that benefit her immensely. Ceci is blessed to be able to have such a life of joy and opportunities. Her life in Brazil was always a challenge for she was diagnosed with Dylexia and anxiety where she had to have private tutoring. She studied at the St. Pauls School which is a British Highschool located in S達o Paulo. Throughout her education at this school she achieved awards for CAS (Community Action & Service) for participating in aiding children in need at a daycare facility. She also earned an award for Improved Achievement. Throughout her 19 years at this school Ceci underwent tutoring to help enhanced and developed her skills. The end result was when she was able to graduate in 2011 with a IB Diploma (International Baccalaureate). Ceci loves caring for others and has found a career where she can express her design knowledge to the world and possible clients. Before settling down with Interior Design, she initially wanted to pursue Landscaping which later developed into Architecture but it was to technical for her therefor, Interior Design arised and she was sold. The beauty of designing a space/home for someone, to see the positive energy and thrill when the project is completed is what brings her to want to pursue this particular career.

01 Residential Design Project Spring 2015

Laurel Heights, San Francisco, CA Instructor: Ernest Mariotto

The residence is located in Laurel Heights neighborhood on 13 Wood Street in San Francisco, CA. This project is divided into three separate spaces for three clients whose personalities are highly unique and individualized. Each apartment level of the entire building complex required an attention to detail and personality. This project enhanced my confidence in creating outstanding and plausible residential interior design spaces.

Site History During the period of 1850 - 1930, Laurel Heights had architecturally styled residences that resembled Victorian and Edwardian style. This has been carried through to the present day, where Laurel Heights is still known for its elegance when it comes to the victorian and edwarian based homes. Yes, there are modern and contemporary buildings uprising, however, there is still a sense of historical architecture that lives throughout the neighborhood. It is located on the Western part of San Francisco, located South of Presidio and east of the Richmond District. It is close to the University of San Francisco to the South. The feel and spontaniuty throughout the neighborhood is somewhat that same as in the Mission. There are residences, retail shops, markets and businesses entirely intermingling. It is far enough that it has its own style, culture and advantages from the hustle and bustle of San Francisco city. There are a lot of family homes, schools and the California Pacific Medical Center which may intail that the there is a combination of middle to upper class neighborhoods. It is an ideal place for people to shop, endulge in the delicacies of a restaurant or cafe and even do their grocery shopping. Overall, this neighborhood is an ideal place for families, small businesses and social life that is adequate for both locals and tourists visiting the area.

Concept Inspiration French Niche - intreguingly personal nook. This space is meant to be a getaway paradise where every corner of the interior has its own highlighted focal point. The niche is meant to rid of daily stress. A getaway paradise that is filled with elaborate detailing that will permit for absolute relaxation and total comfort. The usage of light colors and soft edges will not permit that this space feels hard and stern but serene and tranquil. Combining fine detailing of furniture, lighting and architectural pieces with the subtle use of color will bring this space together as an entire piece of art. Soft lines, that are more dinamic will be the bases of the space by the usage of textiles.

18

Client Profile Client - Simona

Simona is a 20 year old girl who studies at USF in San Francisco. She is the youngest residence to be living within this three story complex. Her parents are Maria and Gino but instead of living on the same floor, Simona has her own private quarters. She enjoys cooking and sometimes cooks for her family when they come over. She does work for her mother twice a week. Being a 20 year old in the city means she will have some friends over on occasion. Unlike her parents she has a medium sized dog.

19

Concept French Niche Intricately beautiful with uniquely different materials and furnishes that come together in one space, a ‘Nook’. A private corner within an interior space that has highlights of its own prized possessions. Patterns and textiles with minimal colors create a serene atmosphere for this 1 bedroom abode. Small details here and there bring forth the element of French influence whilst every specific room within the garden apartment is in turn a Niche. This is an ideal space for a young girl who needs a private abode where she can be at ease and forget about the world outside. Being a 23 year old young girl, one would consider designing a private getaway where every corner turned within the space is somewhat of an adventure. By having subdued color pallette evenly distributed throughout the space creates a more zen and peaceful atmosphere away from all the chaos and noise from the outside world. In order to fully display the 'nook' factor there are certain elements and decor that will be highlighted in both material finishes and furniture furnishings for they will be hidden discretely throughout this interior space.

Case Study

Building Codes for Studio Dwelling: - Exit corridors in residential and commercial spaces must have adequate ventilation - A room used for cooking and living have no less than 144 sqft of superficial floor area - In a residence the kitchen must be equipped with cleaning supplies to enable proper preparation, storage and preservation of food - Kitchen sinks are mandatory within a kitchen area and must be constructed with non absorbent and impermeable material finishes - No room should have a ceiling height below 7 ft 6 inches - If not a habitable room the ceiling height should not be less then 7 ft

Kitchen - Even though there will only be one resident within these quarter, it is still necessary to create a kitchen where there is enough open space to allow for proper circulation and traffic flow. This is a traditional and simply form of kitchen design with the subway tiles and basic overhead cabinetry. Since the client is young having a vast amount of elaborate changes may not be so much of a necessary detail. This area needs to be functional and things must be at easy access. Having an open shelving display open the kitchen layout even more, it was crucial to keep in mind that this residence is not large and space alocations must be properly designed to fit everything.

24

Initial Sketches

Living Room - the second most vital space within this residence because the client being someone who will be entertaining friends will need an area other than her kitchen of master bedroom to properly fit a hand-full of friends comfortably. The living room is a traditional setting with the seating arrangments but that is what the client is looking for, a place where she can relax and sit comfortably in a lounge chair and not have to worry about sitting up straight. This room in other words is the "play room" where the adventures and movie marathons take place.

Custom Furniture The image to the left is an isolated rendering of the custom glass and wood closet for the client. By having the glass frosted creates this hidden illusion and mysery as to what lies behind and within it. The custom made wood shelving is meant to relate to the concept of 'French Niche' with the ondulating curves. The overall furniture piece is delicate and feminine with the air of tranquility for this young client.

The image to the right is the custom high top dining table. Since the kitchen spacing is interlocking with the living room, an improvisation of encompassing a dining table with an overhead structure separates both rooms. The overhead structure is the main frame for the table and creates a positive and circular effect. It is simple yet highly effective in a small environment for a young person. In relation to the concept, the enclosure creates the niche or nook effect by restricting what area is the living room and which area is the kitchen.

The perfect secluded area for a 23 year old girl to get away from drama and outside chaos. The simplicity of the design with hints of delicate beauty create this master bedroom. The sliding door enables the client to either isolate herself for some privacy or have it open for when guests come over. This was a simple yet highly effective outcome. The wallpaper behind the bed has become the focal point upon entering the master bedroom and in addition it distinguishes itself from the off-white hue throughout the rest of the space. Aside from havig the bed, there is a small 'niche' where the client is able to work. This interior space is meant to be a place for relaxation, as well as, for studying but overall it is the niche away from noise.

This living room space is fit for someone who wants to relax and enjoy music or even a good movie on a nice afternoon. The feeling brought into this space is clean, fresh and rejuvinating. One may say that the focal point in this space are the two armchairs because of their dark leather tone. By having a unique and different color palette from the bright and tranquil colors of the sofa, walls and entertainment unit results in a proper balance (ying and yang) distribution. The entire space is atmoshperically pleasing and welcoming. One will get this view by standing in the kitchen and have

the ideal peripheral view of the living area, bathroom and bedroom.

division amongst the kitchen and living area. Due to the fact that ther is only one residence there was no need to create such an elaborate kitchen however, there are details like the chandelier and the hidden laundry cabinet which create that sophisticated feel. By having a small dining table increases positive circulation and flow throughout the kitchen boundaries. One will notice the tile floor transition to wood planks, this was done to create a smooth effect throughout the space. Cutting the two types of flooring immediately does not fit well with the concept and atmospherical goal for

Master Bathroom No.

This interior by far follows the concept of 'French Niche', the perfect oasis for a getaway. The client has both options, a personalized bathtub and shower. By having both options creates more possibilities and less stress for the client. Once again there is the usage of bright, clean and vivid colors that lighten the bathroom atmosphere. There are high end and sophisticated details being used for the lighting fixtures and details of the sink vanity which relate to the French part of the concept. The usage of the tile flooring is extremely classic and simple yet a form of tradition that never gets old but

simply upgraded and revamped to fit the 21st Century interiors.

Concept Inspiration Art piece or Exhibition Hall - something that is timeless, highlighted within a space with materials that help to focus on it. The simplicity, regalness, cleanliness within a museum emphasizes its importance towards the art pieces being exhibited. Using material finishes and specific furntiure pieces that will emphasize the space is ideal for someone who enjoys the simplicity of things. By adding enough natural and artificial lighting within a space with a contrast in enabling specific pieces to be the center of attention.

Lives in a three story apartment complex by himself in the neighborhood of Laurel Heights. He shares this apartment complex with his sister and his niece. He enjoys exercising in the early morning. 45

Concept Optical Illusion It has the illusion of disappearing and fooling someone in thinking it is not there when in fact it is. The concept behind this idea is meant to create an interior space where items and built-in structures have the sense of being hidden from the human eye. In order to discover elements within the space the user must walk in all directions to uncover what lies behind a wall for example. The client wanted a spacious interior where everything is clean and not clustered. The more space the better.

Master Bedroom - because this residence is mainly designed with concrete by having a geometric accent wall within the residence creates a focal point and a unique touch. The client wanted their space to be very basic and minimalistic where elements are hidden from the naked eye and this is why there is not much designed with this space. The client will not be spending majority of their time in this specific space, this area is used for one purpose and that is for sleep. Even though it will only be used to rest it still needs to be well designed with hints of intricate detailing throughout the walls and lighting fixtures.

50

Initial Sketches

Open Office - unlike typical residential offices where it may feel like a cubicle this particular office is meant to be open and create easy access throughout the space. There are not doors secluding this particular space from the rest of the entire residence. This is so that it will be easier to flow throughout the space. The geometric elementals throughout the textiles, lighting and shelving create the high end illusion within a space where elements are meant to be hidden.

Custom Furniture The image to the left is a custom open shelving and base cabinet unit. Since the client lives by themselves there was no need to create such an elaborate closet. By having the entire furniture piece exposed allows for there to be more spacing both in the bedroom and for placement of objects. The overall material is wood with a copper and glass overhead shelving display. There are some alternated hooks for hanging any clothing items that may not be suited for folding.

The image to the right is part of the custom furniture displayed in the gym. The concept being 'Optical Illusion' this piece fits the part. It is meant to seem as though it is rising from witin the ground. The combination of copper and the white drawers is such a beautiful contrast amongst material finishes. This piece was created as a display shelf or for placing fitness items within the drawers. Simple yet elegant in the overall design.

Concept Inspiration Inimitably Serene - calming, zen and at peace. Not afraid to show its true colors and hidden elements within a space but that it is not overwhelming for the user. Humble abode. Relaxation spaces that steps away from the hectic exterior. Personal nook. By using dark hues and contrasting materials will create this sense of tranquil presence. Utilizing elements of furniture that are exposed enables the interior space to permit natural light through as well as helping the space feel more open and not clustered. Not only will this space be welcoming for both the user but for guests who are visiting and will be curious to know what hides behind these illusions of somewhat transparency.

Concept Albufeira Castle of the Sea. Introducing regal and royal colors brings the essence of something that has been there for a long time, like a castle. By using stone and wood finishes brings forth the ideology that one is in a castle but a 21st Century up to date castle. High contrast in dark and light colors creates this harmonious ambience.

Master Bedroom This master bedroom is the epitomy of luxury and regalness throughout the entire residence. The usage of the lightened burgundy accent wall brightness and fortifies the concept. This is the main bedroom room within a metropolitan castle.. Every other color or material finish within the room is compatible with the accent wall. The color resembles the ruby color from a king's crown. This is the feeling that is meant to be portrayed in the space; importance, serene beauty and luxury. The dark wood flooring creates this mysterious and formal effect to the room which is suitable for a couple who simply wants to relax and enjoy their private area.

93

Living Room Upon entering the residence this open area is the heaven and clarity balance within the space. Bright and vivid tones of off-white, pure white and subtle hints of wood and stone. The intricate fireplace is designed as a decor statement piece with the wrotten iron framing which resembles the combination of sea air wrotting the iron of a castle. Even though there seems to be quite a few furniture pieces that divide this space it is very open allowing for positive circulation.

94

95

96

Kitchen Typically, in such a vast residence one would be expected to have a large kitchen however, cooking is not a priority whilst entertainment is crucial. Having an intricate looking dining area that seeps through to the open kitchen and living room opens the space even more. The mixed use of material distribution throughout the space is a good balance of light and dark. Having an open kitchen enables clients to easily move throughout the space without having to cause traffic. By replacing doors with division walls permits for a certain high end residential level of creation that was correctly used.

97

Dining Room & Wine Bar Entertainment is a must in this space therefor by having a hidden wine bar that was hidden behind this curvilinear suspended wooden frame relates highly to the concept of intricate beauty and regal beauty. There is a wine display shelf that is highly exhibited. It is a statement piece of its own. By having it separated but yet within the dining room area does not create that distraction and overwhelming feelings that it is takng over the space. The usage of the stone accent wall is meant to resemble that the dining area has been functioning for a long period of time and that it is being redesigned to have the feeling of renewal and regal design.

98

99

100

Office A combination of home office with partial reception area. When there are not clients of meetings this office space can be used as an open area where residens can work on personal and professional projects without being entirely disturbed. By using the dark wood flooring with the concrete creates the illusion of regal and timeless design. The frosted division walls are meant to be privacy walls when meetings are taking place without having to use structural walls, natural light from both within and out of the room bring in even light distribution.

101

Office This office is the largest office within the entire residence because it is considered to be the meeting area with a coffee table and more seating furniture. The usage of colors within this particular space is very subtle and somewhat bright. In order to have a peaceful work environment bright colors are chosen to avoid negative energy throughout the space.

Being one with nature is the main aspect that is to be enhanced throughout this design not only by the usage of high end materials but by the emphasis in design that is sustainably and ecologically friendly systems like solar panels and green roofs. By utilizing these elements properly throughout the overall design will enable to have a properly functionable residence that is friendly to the surrounding exterior environment.

Inspiration Studio MK27 is a well known architectural firm located in the metropolitan city of S達o Paulo, Brazil. This outstanding firm was first established in the 80s by a highly respectful architect called Marcio Kogan. He is linked to AIA (American Institute of Architects) and graduated from one of the top architectural universities in Brazil, Mackenzie Presbyterian University. It is safe to say that he has made his stamp in the world and therefor, is the inspiration for this particular project. Kogan and his team strive to create sleek and simple designs that have an element of refined detail. One particular project that is the highlight of this inspiration is the 'Bahia House'. Not only is this residence located in the same state of Bahia as my project but both are ecological and sustainable. The 'Bahia House' designed by Studio MK27 has designed the floor plan and utilized materials that optimize positive environment. They also used national and authentic Brazilian architecture throughout the design. Bahia is known to be a state with high temperature and therefor the successful accomplishment was that they were able to create floor plan that allowed the interior to refrain from overheating. - Sustainable - Environmentally Friendly - Ecological - Natural - Authentic

108

Project Map Overview Brazil is typically known as a high and humid country surrounded by beauty. The closer you are to the Equator the hotter the climate will get. One State in particular is Bahia. This state is located in the Northeastern part of Brazil where one can say that the climate is very tropical and humid because it neighbors the coastline. The population is around 15.3 million being in 2014. The capital of Bahia is Salvador where the residence is to placed. This capital is very touristical and known for its food and beaches. Salvador is a touristical place when visiting Brazil because of its architecture where there is a lot of baroque influences. One example is illustrated below, 'Igreja S達o Francisco where the interior architecture is jaw dropping. Some other activities that make this city attractive and unique is the Capoeira martial arts dancing.

Project Program The client being a young local brazilian couple want a residence that is entirely secluded and with a magnificent view of the ocean. The purpose of designing a sustainable project is so that the clients can be one with nature and fully grasp the concept of ecology and eco-friendly. Every part of the house has elements, materials and hints of sustainability whether it be technological or traditionally based. The residence is one story high but spread out horizontally to allow for proper and positive air flow throughout the entire residence to bring cool air when days are hot. Due to the fact that this part of Brazil is close to the Equator, it is necessary to create large open areas with access to windows and fresh air.

Concept Natureza Urbana

The interior space for any residential project has to be functional and comforting for every user. The concept is meant to resemble that there needs to be a balance between the nature elements as well as have a combination of high end technology to relate the two together. The environment within this particular residence will illuminate the elements of unifying sustainable elements with the user. Brazil is a place where nature is always in abundance and were nature is so vivid that creating an environment with nature surrounding it is a true oasis.

112

Client and User Profile Maria Clara and Roberto Dias de Almeida are a young couple who have been married for 5 years who decided to pack up and leave the huge metropolitan city of Rio de Janeiro and move up north to Salvador, Bahia. Maria Clara works as a nurse and has been working since she graduated 3 years ago. Whilst Roberto works as a firefighter since he graduated from high school because this profession has been in his family. This couple fits perfectly with what they do. Since they have a busy schedule they wanted to move to a more relaxed and environmentally friendly environment away from the chaos and traffic noise of the big city.

Initial Sketches

Master Bedroom - In order for this space to have proper natural air circulation furniture selection needed to be scarce. Since the concept relating the urban land with nature having the interior be very simplistic creates this feeling where everything is at its simplist form.

114

Initial Sketches

Living Room - one of the main rooms throughout this entire residence due to its intricate circular glass tube and live wall. The initial idea was to use tires as the base for the sofa where the cushion is made of inflated recycled paper. This area needs natural air flow indoor to keep the interior part of the house cool from the humidity. By having the bamboo panels this diverts direct wind flow but enables a proper balance.

Master Bedroom Even though there are a lot of wood textures throughout this space they are part of the cultural and true connection with the nature. The usage of the light textured walls, concrete flooring and wood are a beautiful natural combination that illuminate this room for a couple who wants to get away from the cluster of the big city. The high ceiling opens the space even more. Instead of using artificial air conditioning it was substituted by solar paneled functioning fans that will create a gentle and pleasing breeze throughout this vast room. By having the room be open brings positive circulation.

123

Living Room One of the most elaborate interior spaces within this residence where entertainment is a must. The living room has some form of closure from the wind and humid ocean breeze with the glass sliding windows. However, in order to bring in natural breeze there are bamboo panels that have just the right amount of distance from one another to allow from a perfect amount of air throughout this space. The usage of a living wall will bring in a proper balance of O2 throughout the space. Having a combination of wood textured white wall and concrete once again create an even balance of colors and textures. The centerpiece within this particular space is the circular tube where there is a living tree displayed in the center to relate to the concept of urban nature where it is within the architectural structure of the house but is part of the growing process of nature.

124

125

126

Kitchen Having a space where the clients can indulge in national cuisine fits this kitchens design description. The combination of having a living wall, light and medium wood finishes, bamboo and concrete have created an interior environment that is airy and inviting. This is the first space upon entering the residence and the clients want to create an experience when inviting friends and family over. In order to relate to the sustainable part of the project there is the usage of natural daylighting which will bring in natural sunlight as well as create a proper balance of warmth throughout the day and cool air once the night starts to take its form.

127

Master Bathroom Due to the fact that the couple will be spending majority of their time outside on the beach having a detailed bathroom design was not necessary and therefor the atmosphere upon entering this room is very basic and one could say that it related to nature with its simplicity and practicality. The usage of nature and subtle colors brings the illusion of being one with nature but in a more refined setting. The toilet and shower will be using natural rain water so as to be ecologically and sustainably friendly to the surrounding environment.

128

129

130

Outside Deck Area

In order to fully commit to having a sutainable residence it was crucious have an exterior part where the clients could have the most natural experience. Having a living pool is the true dedication where the water is entirely natural and friendly. What better way then to fully indulge in a natura pool and be in a space that is one with nature. The clients will be able to shade themselves from the rays of the sun under the structural wooden canopy at at the same time soak themselves in their own private nature pool.

131

Exterior Aerial Overview The clients want to be isolated from the typical and chaotic environment of the city and having a mix of interior and exterior sustainable elements evenly distributed throughout their space is what creates the perfect sustainable design cycle for this residence. Every interior sustainable system is somehow linked to the exterior sustainable systems. By having both water and solar panels is crucial when designing a sustainable residence. In addition to those two systems there is the green roof system which is the true dedication to the green environment surrounding this young couple at their new residence in Brazil.

Commercial Group Project Fall 2014 Mission Bay, San Francisco, CA Instructor: Kathleen Valkuchak Partner: Bianca Betancourt

By designing this commercial space allowed both myself and my partner to use our skills in developing this multi functional space that was appealing to a variety of clientele neighboring the Mission Bay in San Francisco. Due to the fact, that this was a group project, enabled myself as a student to be a good leader as well as a good team member. This project was my first group project, it was very eye opening to learn how communicate and express certain elements in order to create the ideal atmosphere for this designated space.

Inspiration Through required materials and design elementss this space will become a hidden gem in Mission Bay where lots of customers will be dazzled by its interior beauty. The materials will have an organic and natural look to them whilst hints of carved and unique elements will be representing the gem within the space itself. The gem itself will be represented in the kitchen, restaurant and market through the products, prepared foods and event catering and the winery. Each of these elements will create a unique beauty that is distributed throughout the space. In an interior space there is always something that needs or wants to be a focus/center point. For our client, every inch within the space wether it is the restaurant, grocery or prepared foods they must be hidden gems within the space. They are the gems that will bring the entire space together as one, attracting customers because they are the true gems.

138

Site History In the past, the neighborhood of Mission Bay was simply a wide, shallow bay full of clams. oysters and full of marsh life. In the mid 1800s Mission Bay was known for being the location for shipbuilding and repair. When the 1906 earthquake took place a lot of the debris was taken to Mission Bay to create more sustainable land.

As the years went by, in the 1980s Mission Bay had gone from a marshland to railroads with warehouses and industrial facilities. Mission Bay slowly evolved into a luxuries neighborhood that is slowly being populated with locals. This neighborhood is going to be overtaken by condominiums, high-end restaurants and retail with a medical and health business.

This neighborhood has gone through many ups and downs throughout San Francisco history. Being colonized by the native americans then become a debris land. In the late 1990s, UCSF wanted a part of this land to built its health center and campus. UCSF has been one of the main facilities in transforming Mission Bay into the neighborhood that it is today. When UCSF started building their campus they also thought of the possibiity of having residential homes and retail stores located on this part of town. This was known as the largest re-development projects initiated in San Francisco. They wanted to rebuild and convert 300 acres of land into a planned community. This community would have residences, stores, restaurants, health centers, parks, library, etc. It would be a neighborhood that became a community of its own within San Francisco Bay. The re-develpoment is slowly growing and increasing in size. The location for the retail development is taking place closer to the waters edge of Mission Creek and the park therefore visitors can enjoy the stores and the beautiful facilities. Mission Bay will be known for its new and innovating residential and commercial buildings that bring in students, professionals, tourists and families. Missio Bay is the new and improved neighorbood people are looking for.

139

Project Map Overview Mission Bay has a high home and rent values because it is such a desired neighborhood due to its re-development project. It is surrounded by parks, San Francisco Bay and UCSF. This part of San Francisco is not noisy because it is farther away from the hustle and bustle form the city center. There is plenty of sun and wind being so close to the bay where the temperature averages to about 66 degrees. The Crime rating for Mission Bay is a little over the National Average, this could be because more people are flowing into this neighborhood. Overall, Mission Bay is full of new and innovative excitements to offer locals as well as tourists. Project Program The client for this project is called Tony Riveira. He owns several other restaurants and now wants to explore the beauty that is San Francisco. By acquiring this place, he wants to open a restaurant and market for the neighborhood of Mission Bay as well as for the locals and tourists. The space is to be a casual restaurant that functions during the morning through to the evening. This space is to have organic elements incorporated within it and have a high quality appearance that appeals to the sense. There is to be a floating wine bar where customers can buy and taste wine at their own pleasure. There is to be a market place that will have a section for prepared foods and groceries. For customers to view their selections, the kitchen is to have an open area and a area for offsite catering/event catering. In the market there is to enough space for packaged goods, refrigerated good, backery which all will be upscale. The purpose, is to captivate the young, foodie hipsters designing a space that has enough criculation for people to transit at ease through all the sections in the space and be unique from anything anyone has ever encountered. The overall feel to this space is to be FRESH and EXQUISITE.

142

Client and User Profile Tony Riviera, is a a highly successful business owner who has made his stamp throughout the culinary world. Owning several restaurants businesses has managed to place him in top category for business. He is the CEO and Chairman of Primo Hospitality Group and has chosen to open a new innovative restaurant locaed in the Mission Bay neighborhood in San Francisco. California. This specific restaurant is meant to be a combination of a cafĂŠ/restaurant, wine bar, prepared foods and market. The reason as to why Riviera chose to place his new restaurant in this remote part of San Francisco is mainly because the area is still being discovered and once designed will attract a large variety of customers. The establishment will be located on the ground floor of the Channel Apartments of the Mission Bay neighborhood. The overall goal when designing this environmentally friendly space is that throughout every designated space it be high end but sustainable. There is an ideal clientele which he intends to attract, young foodies of the local community. In order to appeal to these people there must be a full package, which includes; showcasing a beautifully designed interior space, displaying organic and wholesome foods which are affordable but high quality. People who live in San Francisco are always searching and discovering places that distribute sustainable culinary which is good quality and at good prices.

As previously mentioned, the clientele are the young foodies from the surrounding community. This specific stereotype considered to be people who are seeking to find new and intriguing places to visit and indulge throughout the streets of San Francisco. Some hot spots throughout San Francisco are very tight knit and stay mainly around the Financial District, Presidio Heights, Nob Hill and Embarcadero. By placing this commercial space in a unique and new neighborhood gives people an opportunity to explore the rest of beautiful views and atmosphere San Francisco may offer. The age classification for this group includes; families, couples, singles and even the working society in between the middle and upper class who are willing to spend a bit more on high quality food. By having a multi functional interior space allows customers to explore the entire ground but doing their groceries and taste a wonderful wine and appetizer.

Concept Raw

The interior space for this commercial project is meant to highlight all important areas that are being put on display. Each area within the space illuminates and exposes the natural and authentic texture of the materials used to assemble such a beautiful artistic interior. When describing the word raw, one will interpret something that is bare, in its natural element and exposed. This is exactly what the concept was behind this design. There are no gimics and no hidden trinkets throughout the space, everything is put on display. There is, however, in every space there are hidden gems that are the true highlight. This relates to the concept because amongst the raw and true beauty of nature one may find the ‘diamond in the rough’. Without completely overwhelming the entire space with exposed elements the type of finishes and hints of delicate design create a higher level of sophistication but ease to the space where the clientele do not feel overwhelmed. By creating such an interior space will appeal to people who are working as well as exploring the sites. Tony Riviera perceived this space as being something that would be high end and classic and by creating a design that is refined but has this timeless illusion has enabled this space be the true gem in the Mission Bay neighborhood. Another key aspect was to ensure that the interior space and environment were approachable and welcoming. By incorporating the most simplistic form of materials and furniture the concept, ‘Raw’ has fully encompassed and taken its place in this commercial space.

144

Brand When simply describing the word 'Regalia' ts significance is finery, glorious,

R E G A L I A fine foods

monarchical and sublime. This is when the group chose to use this word as our ideal brand name but refine it to represent high end and classic detailing. The initial idea behind the name 'Regalia' was to ensure that it resembled the concept and that it was timeless. Regalia is an Italian word meaning royalty. Royalty has been this worldly classification that has been seen for a long time throughout the entire world as something powerful. The actual logo design was meant to display the nuance of the entire interior space and the concept 'Raw'. Parallel to the concept the font is worn away, all caps but with a hint of royalty with the circular accent creating a statement. The logo is clean, clear and delicate by having the letters evenly spaced out and thin. The two main colors are black and gold where the black resembles the sleak and organized structural elements in the space, whilst the gold signifies the organic and wholesome atmosphere.

Initial Sketches

Cafe & Open Kitchen - This was an initial idea where customers could have a more relaxing environment whilst indulging in the delicacies offered at the Cafe. The environment is meant to resemble a living room layout with the addition of the sofa and some low two person seating arrangements. This still gives the illusion of a high end and classic interior but yet highly approachable for all clientele to enjoy. There is still the usage of the glass globe lighting fixtures which are brough down to a lower position of eye level to create a pleasing atmoshpere.

148

Initial Sketches

Prepared Foods - Before deciding to design a full length prepared foods case the initial design was two separate L - shaped counters that would be illuminated by pendant, undercabinet and recessed lighting fixtures. The usage of the ceramic bronze tiles for signage were still in play but this was not the ideal choice for a high end and classic nook. The overall design was very traditional and very related to residential interiors which was not the true purpose of this space. The glass globe lighting ffixtures still remained to create the illusion of expore and being bare.

It resembles an architectural tree, instead of literally placing a live tree within the space, this is a more high end and classic form of achieving the goal. When customers and employees walk around this masterpiece, every branch will be connecting itself to the surrounding ceiling walls as a form of grounding itself within the building. In relation to the concept, when a tree has established itself in the space it can grow and branch itself.

The image to the right is a preliminary elevation of the seating area in the Wine Bar lounge. The high back custom tufted sofa is meant to enclose the space to reduce the illusion of a high walls. By having to types of lighting, recessed and low drop pendant lighting allows for a comfortable atmospherical lighting effect distributed throughout this space. The low pendant globe glass lighting are elements that enhance the regal element. The two person seating is mainly designated for people who are going to indulge in a light appetizer with a glass of the best wine at Regalia.

150

Development Drawings The perspective above is displaying part of the Wine Wall and delicatessen towards the other side of Regalia. This part of the space is meant to be where the clientele can do their personal shopping and not be bothered with waiters. The wine wall encompasses 40 feet inwith where there is an infinite distribution of high end wines at anyones disposal. The customers may also purchase meat, fish and other produce where employees will be serving samplers and aiding any customers who need assistance. Behind these two allocations are the private offices and employees lounge.

The elevation above is what customers would see if they were arriving from one of the main entrances into the Cafe & Open Kitchen. This specific part of Regalia is where customers order hot/cold dishes and non-alcoholic/ alcoholic drinks and take seats both at the bar and seating arrangements. The concept ‘Raw’ introduces the element of bare and therefor, having the shelves exposed to the customers exhibits that there is no ruse and that Regalia is true to its word on what it serves. Custom Furniture

These are two custom furniture samples that are being used in the interior space of Regalia. The furniture piece above is the fruit stand which is displayed in the market. The design behind this piece was again to resemble back to the concept of ‘Raw’ where everything is exposed and bare. Customers are able to retrieve their products through all sides of this custom piece which create a positive impact throughout the market. Employees do not necessarily need to bother customers to see if they need assistance for customers upon entering the market will see what they need immediately with this system of display. Another custom piece is the packaged good display case which is close to the prepared foods area. This is a larger version of the fruit stand and entire exposed from both sides. Even though this specific piece is backed up against a wall customers are able to see the products fast reducing traffic throughout the market. Both pieces relate to the concept as well as the high end and classic sophistication of the name, Regalia. They are sleak, clean and direct to the point. Customers who want to purchase items on a time crunch will have these pieces to thank because of their easy access.

Cafe & Open Kitchen Upon entering this particular section within Regalia Fine Foods, customers will encounter with the personalized food service and bar. This area is meant to be a place where customers can indulge in culinary and fine dining where they place their order at one end of the bar, watch their food being prepared and pay at the check out cashier. In regard to seating, clientele has a variety of options, they can sit at the bar, communal tables or even the L - shaped seating. Even though the concept is ‘Raw’, there needed to be a higher level of sophistication to relate to what Tony Riviera desired. By placing a lower ceiling with steal beams creates this pleasing and high end interior. In addition to this interior aspect, the back wall of the open kitchen is a discreet form of signage where customers can identify the Cafe & Open Kitchen.

Cafe & Open Kitchen In continuation to the Cafe & Open Kitchen, this is a particular view from the the customers ordering line of the employees behind the bar counter. As one may notice, there are a lot of different seating arrangements. The purpose was to create an environment where cusomters can feel at ease and mingle together and not feel that they need to have a specific seating order. A lot of the elements especially the type of lighting fixtures are entirely expposed and somewhat disguised throughout the space. Every part of Regalia Fine Foods must relate back to the concept, ‘Raw’. Having exposed lighting fixtures creates the illusion that they are bare. Another key element is the fact that, the furniture selection is very clean and has very basic colors, this is because elements in the purest and most natural form have their original color before any addition chemicals are added.

Market This specific perspective is at the end part of Regalia Fine Foods within the Market. Customers are able to roam freely around this area where they may purchase packaged goods, fruits and even wine. A lot of the customer furniture selection are exposed especially the fruit stands where it is able to see right through to the other side. This enables customers to see products easily reducing traffic. Furthermore, Regalia Fine Foods has stylized products and in order to sell these specific products, there is a sales counter station where a representative of Regalia Fine Foods will be offering samplers for customers to indulge and most likely take away. This enhances customer relation and makes them come back for more. By having the globe lighting entire transluscent, reduces the distraction away from products, where the fruit stands and wine wall are the main focus. D

Market Regalia Fine Foods had one goal and that was to create an interior atmosphere where customers are able to see what they want to purchase from a long distance throughout the Market. By having floating and exposed shelving enables the clientele to see through the entire space. Customers may also purchase fish or poultry a the butcher/delicatessen which leads tot eh enclosed catering kitchen. The materials used for this designated space are concrete, brushed steel and wood. All of these material finishes create the illusion of an interior that has been allocated for a long period of time.

Market This perspective view is meant to portray the cold case, with some fruit stands and floating shelves with packaged goods. This section is still within the Market and customers may peacefully enjoy selecting items and if they need assistance they may ask employees for assistance. The ceiling is lower in this part of the space to enclose it and create some form of an alcove. The result, is where customers do not feel overwhelmed by the large columns and the rest of the high ceilings throughout the remainder of the space. Once again the steel beams are in play where it draws the attention of the customers towards this particular section of the market, where one can resemble this as another discreet form of signage used throughout the entire building.

Market The wine wall is by far the most notorious element throughout the Market for it is one of the largest signage usages to identify a specific section within the interior. Not only is this wall 40 feet in length but the wall tiles are entirely consuming both the floor and back wall which draws the customers eye immediately when entering the space. This is a simple yet highly effective form of signage. Customers can personally select their own wine whilst doing their shopping. This suggests that Regaliaf Fine Foods intends to create a socially pleasing and friendly environment for customers to wander throughout the space without feeling overwhelmed by the grandeur of the space. Some checkout counters are self-service whilst others require an employee assistance. By having two types of checking out, shows the customers how free the environment is and that they are not on a routine.

Prepared Foods Sometimes customers are on a time crunch and simply wish to purchase items quickly without disturbance. What better way to create a Prepared Foods nook which shows that there is a combination of styles of product purchase throughout the entire Regalia Fine Foods space. This case is custom and has both cold and hot products with a small self-service help station. Once again the ceiling is dropped to create this enclosure. With this, there was the addition of the cermaic bronze tiles that beome another form of signage. Every form of signage has been used in various different ways as to not create a boring rythmic illusion. Upon entering the space customers will know exactly where the prepared foods area is and will be able to appreaciate this installement.

Prepared Foods The other side of the Prepared Foods area is the self-checkout and the communcal seating arrangements. The addition of seating was to enable customers to purchase their food independently and have the possibility to calmly enjoy it if time allows them to. The seating is just like the seating in the Cafe & Open Kitchen, the continuation of the style is to ensure that there is a steady flow of interior performance throughout the space. Having the self-checkout is a highly beneficial asset for customersbecause if they are in a rush they can simply pay and exit immediately. There are delicate and minor representations of the concept used in this particular perspective by the usage of the exposed lighting fixtures and the etching of the name of the commercial space. This space is meant to be a high end and classical environment but yet approachable and having the Prepared Foods has fully reached the goal.

Wine Bar The Wine Bar is the main gocal point in this particular section of the space. Customers may indulge in a small appetizer whilst having high end wine served at Regalia Fine Foods. With very basic seating customers can be seated a the bar or at low table seating with the high top custom sofa seating. The custom sofa is meant to be the limit as to where customers eye levels ends so as not to pay attention to the high ceilings. One may notice that a lot of the furniture pieces, architectural elements and materials blend together and this is the result of the unity within the space. The circular column where the wine is held is the focal point that can be seen both from this perspective as also from the ordering line at the Cafe & Open Kitchen. The wine is illuminated and somewhat put on pedestal by the brushed steel beams to enhance the ideal beauty that is the Wine Bar.

184

Wine Bar The beauty that is this custom wooden Wine Bar is magnificent and luxurious. This piece fits the ideal goal that Tony Riviera wanted to be achieved which was something high end and classic. The entire space can fully see the Wine Bar through a 360 degree rotation this can be from within the space and also from the exterior. The ceilings are very high and by continuing the branches from the ground up throughout the ceiling creates the illusion of branches from a tree and encloses the space.

04 Sustainable Commercial Project Fall 2015

Pacific Palisades, Santa Monica, CA Instructor: Tuan Louv

With this particular project the goal was to create a well rounded space fit for elder residents where they could escape the reality that is life and be within an oasis. By design a combination of both private and public areas within the property enabled users to have a positive experience. Being placed at a higher level on land creates the illusion of being a hidden gem within the city scapes of Santa Monica.

Inspiration When I get older and may not be able to take care of myself on my own I would like to either be with my family or be placed in a senior residence home simply because I want a residence to feel like my old home. Having a space that fits the profile of home away from home is the ideal location for a senior to rest their minds and bodies. Peaceful tranquility is the key element when picturing a space that will bring nothing but joy to someone. The inspiration comes from the mind set of a country home where there is no direct interaction with the outside world. A full oasis that one can simply bask and not have to worry about their troubles of the reality outside. Being able to curl up with a multitude of blankets watching the ocean with a nice cup of tea is true abyss.

- Tranquility - Cozy - At Ease - Comfort - Leisure

191

Site History In the past, this particular location was merely open land where people used to film movies because of the open plains. It later developed to become a housing neighborhood where people initially started setting up cabins then bungalows and then it became the multimillion residential homes that are nowadays.

This particular area was very vast and open where people could enjoy the drive inbetween downtown Santa Monica and Malibu. This area was already very high in tourist attraction because of the beaches which would attract a variety of different people both locals as well as tourists.

Project Map Overview Pacific Palisades, is one of the many neighborhoods in Los Angeles County that has developed into an outstanding place for both residential and commercial spaces. It is located Southeast of Santa Monica and East of Malibu. The Will Rogers Beach is set as the ocean front landscape to the Pacific Ocean. In 1922, this designated neighborhood was meant to be an extravagant “religious-intellectual commune when it was bought by Reverend Charles Scott. In 2000, Pacific Palisades was considered to be one of the top 10 neighborhoods to have the largest percentage of white residents (88.6%). Project Program The main client are the seniors and therefor it was essential to create an environment both on the exterior and interior that is appealing to all senses. There are both recreational elements as well as sustainably education assest which will improve the quality and standards of their lives. By having a diverse amount of amenities distributed throughout all levels of the complex permits for them to have a full experience of the beauty that is comfort and tranquility. Throughout the entire space there are several sections that are the highlight within Athanasia that will enthrall residents and visitors to be able to fully indulge in the luxurious of this senior living. It can be seen that each area has a subtle hint of color to create a delicate contrast against the lighter tones that are properly distributed throughout the space. Being as this is a senior living center does not mean that it should look typical, Athanasia is a new and innovative senior living that feels like someones very own mansion turned true. Every resident will be able to indulge in the delicacies at both the bar/cafe and taste magnificent cuisine whilst in the restaurant with a view.

They should feel that they are still young and that this place is their mansion filled with intriguing and atmospherically pleasing elements. The simple use of colors throughout the space is meant to create a serene atmosphere for the residents where they may relive moments of their life that brought warmth to their hearts. Concept Olive Tree

The olive tree is not only seen as a part of flora but as a symbol of life, purity, joy and organic beauty seen throughout life. By designing and creating a space that has some elements that may resemble this tree is crucial when designing for seniors. Te tree is used for multiple purposes and one of them is to rejuvenate the skin and complex. Seniors want to feel young and that life ahead is still positive and full of good things to come. The life style and experience is mean to resemble a renovated home or oasis away from home. Which is what relates to the name of the property, Athanasia. The living environment is meant to resemble a high end residence where the residents may feel as though they are not trapped in this location but enthralled by the simpliciy of he architecture and interior that reminds them of their childhood home. By using minimalistic design wit hints of intricate detailing throughout the interior and material selection invokes an air of anquility and peace.

Upper Level Lounge - Even though there will be a multitude of different things to be occupied with throughout the property it is also helpful and pleasing to have an indoor lounge area for indoor activities. Weather may affect any outdoor events and therefore having a vast indoor space that will allow residents to properly interact with the aid of plenty of natural daylighting which will bring a lot of life and nature atmosphere to the space.

Main Entryway - To ensure that all residents are captured by the beauty of the interior space there will be a combination of natural daylighting and artificial lighting. The daylighting will be provided b the near to ceiling and floor window panels which will surely bring the joyful atmosphere into the space. The mixed use of curved and sharp angles lets the entry become more friendly and not so rigid.

Every senior living center deserves a private secret roof garden and Athanasia simply has the best view and outdoor amenities that are properly suited for senior residents. The roof garden has a combination of both activitiy amenities as well as social amenities, therefor residents may get exercise and plenty of fresh air. There are two decks one designated for relaxation with a view whilst the other side is an open bar/barbeque deck with open seating. In order to create a recreational activity there are garden beds where residents are encouraged to harvest their own food. In addition to this there is a covered bocce ball court. All residents may take full advantage of all the amenities provided at Athanasia.

213

Typical Independent RCP

Typical Independent Living Unit RCP - due to the fact that a portion of the residents may have visibility issues it is crucial to create a proper environment that will cater to their needs with enough lighting. There needs to be a balance between natural daylighting and artificial lighting distributed throughout the interior space to keep the environment welcoming and appealing to the user. The lighting is positioned at specific areas which the senior may feel is most useful. Cecilia Surani Capobianco

Lobby Upon entering Athanasia one is welcomed by this vast lobby that leads your visual perception to the Olive Tree which is growing in the open patio. The combination of light and tranquil material finishes creates this atmosphere of total abyss. Every senior entering this place will feel as though they are in a luxury mansion and not in a senior living center. Every element both lighting and furniture are meant to appeal to all the senses of the body bringing it together as a whole.

222

Reception After entering the building residents are guided to the reception where they will be greated by a staff member who will introduce them to the luxurious Athanasia. The combination of a living wall, wood and beige tones enables the effect of the space to come alive. Not a senior living but a very private and secluded space that is meant to sooth any pumps. The usage of wood panels breaks the typical ceiling finish by making it seem more counry oriented and away fom the ciy. The letter 'R' is a illuminated symbol panel that enables residents to identify exactly where they are located within the space to avoid getting lost or loosing track of their destination.

223

224

225

Bar It will be primarily used when residents have visitors who want to grab a small bite to eat or sip of a nice refreshing drink. The usage of custom wave panelin on the ceiling is to reduce noise pollution and insulate noise for sometimes sensory hearing affects residents. This could be a more ampted version of a tea room. The combination and contrast between light and dark material finishes creates a perfect balanced atmosphere that will please everyone.

226

Health Center If a resident is ill or simply in need of check up they are welcome to enter this space where they can either get more prescriptions or have a doctors appointment. This is another version of a zen room where elderlies can feel relaxed and at ease. Straying away from the chaos. Every element is in sink with the lobby and reception to continue with a natural flow. Sometimes residents cannot see very well and to aid them throughout the space are illuminated symbol panel that are universal to aid residents and guide them to their destination.

227

228

229

Independent Living The independent living has the atmosphere of being a more pleasing environment for the resident has more privacy and does not need assistance. The illusion created is to feel as though you are in your own residence by the ocean. The usage of an accent wall is to help residents who may have memory loss to identify a particular color with the floor they are on, whether they are on the ground or upper level within the complex. The usage of neutral colors with a hint of pop in the space breaks the typical element of a senior living space.

230

Assisted Living This is the second form of dwelling unit where the resident is in more need of assistance. The bed may look that its not secure for an elderly but it has a frame to prevent any accidents and to secure the resident whilst sleeping. In order to recognise a particular room there is a colored accent wall that indicates what whether the resident is on the ground or upper level of the building. This reduces loss and assures the the residents that they are safe. By adding light and vivid colors helps visually impared residents to see clearly whilst wondering throughout the space.

231

232

233

Restaurant Instead of creating a cafeteria, it was selected to transform itself into a restaurant where residents can have the sensation of being outside the living center and not feel as though they are trapped within this complex with no escape. The illusion within this particular space is tranquil and more evening like with the large pendant lights hat are distributed throughou the space. There are tables for large parties as well as private to enable people to have a better choice whilst dining. A lot of the colors are very neutral but do not overwhelm the space.

234

Roof Lounge This is the top view in Pacific Palisades and its located in Athanasia. Every user is allowed up here because both public and private events take place throughout the day. There can be outdoor activities as well as indulge in a homemade barbeque. The color palette is once again related to the general atmosphere distributed throughout the space. There is a combination of both shaded and exposed seating to accomodate a larger variety of people. Very peaceful and this particular area can very well be considered the center of the oasis.

Project Map Overview The Presidio is a middle to upper class neighborhood. It is both residential and commercial, however, the project site’s surroundings are mostly residential. That being said, acoustical is one of the main concerns given that it is a commercial building. The access to the building should be included in the design process since the building is in a court/circle, therefore parking may become as issue. The area is clean with cohesive landscape design, one of our goals when designing the building is to keep its landscape into consideration. Project Program THis project is meant to represent all that is National Geographic and who there are as a company as well as be able to showcase every element that make them who they are today. The headquarters will be located in a historical part of San Francisco which fits the clients profile and background. In the Presidio specifically where the National Geographic building located is entirely open therefor, at certain angles within the complex users will get a full glimpse of the Golden Gate Bridge or even get to indulge in a picnic sponsored by Off the Grid. The project itself is a two story multi purpose building with an additional underground basement level. It is recommended to use every space within this property to ensure that users can venture throughout the space positively. The level 1 and basement areas are directed more for the public whilst level 2 is private and designated for offices. Within the first two levels all users will be taken on a journey throughout the space in a abstract spiral pathway into the life of National Geographic. On the top level even though it is as office where users will be in a fast paced mode there needs to be positive circulation with a innovative track formation. Every aspect within this given space will clarify how National Geographic is in a historical factor as well as how it manages to keep up with the technology of today. Level 1 - entryway, store, cafe, exhibition hall and multipurpose room Basement - exhibition, library, theatre and storage Level 2 - office space

Concept Sacred Spiral

The Spiral has been present within the universe both in science and nature dating back to the Neolithic period. It represents the movement through experiences in life. Expansion, progressive development and growth. Journey through life from the beginning to achieve enlightenment at the center. It is the connection to the eternal forces of nature and the universe. It is a primal element that has been seen as a frequent symbol in nature that is raw and unrestrained by man. Both humans, nature and science are all part of this uniquely simple symbolic representation where we can determine our place within life and our entity. It is also seen as a path where the experience is continuous and ever changing. It directs the attention to a purpose, to travel where the final destination identifies the spiritual balance. The first words when describing the purpose behind National Geographic are science, nature and environmental awareness. Connecting the overall historical meaning of the spiral with the ambition of National Geographic is basically linking one highly historic element with another. Both have a strong bond with the universe and every part within it. National Geographic has the goal or “center” which is to showcase the truth of life on the planet and the spiral uses the center as a form of enlightenment and journey. One and the other have a spiritual balance by metaphorically “walking through life and nature”. They use the environment as the basis of their research to inspire people to appreaciate the planet. Even though the world has transitioned throughout this 21st Century technological world both ideologies somehow have managed to remain true to their objective. The spiral has made its stamp through architecture, science and nature which is still strongly used nowadays. Whilst National Geographic uses magazines which have been their primary means of media to advertise their message. By using simple forms of sending a message sticks to the historical factor and focuses more on the original journey then the technological factor.

249

Mood Board Mystery factor where every moment within the space is some form of an adventure and discovery. By using dark, raw, natural and aesthetically ascent elements will surely create a journey for the users. Certain areas within the space will be focal point which may be used a form of achievement to a goal or enlightenment. It may also be a form of pathfinding for users. The spiral is a journey through life where one can find their meaning and place in it. The materials being used have a raw and weathered effect showing veins of life of pathfinding. The representation of beauty and spiritual balance will be one of the main highlights that connects the elements and mood through the entire space.

Entryway Option 1 Level 1 Upon entering the new National Geographic headquarters one is greeted with a glorious lobby area with an abstract form of a skylight. Before exploring the space the users willl need to retrieve some information with the person at the front desk. The circular panels what consume the front desk are tv screens which will be depicting different images or even movies derived from National Geographic. It is possible to already get a glimpse of the ground level area because it is so open which is the purpose in relation tot he concept of the sacred spiral. The spiral is the journey away from reality and being able to venture through time and users are meant to let go and fully cave in to exploring the space.

270

Entryway Option 2 Level 1 Similar to the previous image this entryway only alters the circular panels to showcase that they will be interchanging images of videos every few minutes. This is to create some form of interaction or attraction for all users who walk into the space. That is how one can make a statement upon entering a space. The skylight is meant to connect the ground level with the office space above to create the unification within spaces. Unity and balance are crucial when creating such a vast space that will need to adjust to a variety of different users.

271

272

273

Cafe Level 1 The cafe is in the center of the entire interior space on level 1. By placing the cafe in the center is particular meant to represent the final stage of the journey of a sacred spiral. This represents the enlightenment stage where one has ventured throughout the world and now has time to reflect on their experience. The cafe is entirely open where users from all directions can access it and have a beverage or something to nibble on before taking home their experience at National Geographic. In order to relate to the actual colors of National Geographic and the nature aspect there are yellow and warm tones distributed throughout the cafe to give the space a organic and life giving effect.

274

Store Level 1 The store is meant to be a place where a user who has journeyed throughout National Geographic has the opportunity to take home with them a token. It is not only a visual and spiritual journey but one that links users to the true meaning of the goal being National Geographic. The usage of custom made circular shelvings which rotate on axis enables users to circulate throughout the store without having to come to a dead end. This furniture piece will be an interactive object for youngsters.

275

276

277

Exhibition Hall Level 1 Once leaving the lobby and checking in coats and bags the journey throughout the sacred spiral and world of National Geographic begins with a mixed media form of exhibition space. Within this space users will be introduced with sculptures, paintings photographs as well as artifacts that will highlight the new discoveries made by explorers. The who purpose is to get users to have the first glance at how nature thrives throughout the world. Users can have the possibility of sitting down as well as walking throughout this area with good circulation. Whilst indulging in the exhibition, one can take some time to admire the environment outside the complex and see the Presidio neighborhood by the usage of large windows that bring in natural daylighting.

278

Library Basement Level Seeing as the library was placed in the basement level the goal was to create a well illuminated space that has the atmosphere of a casual feel and as though one is in the outdoors on a trail. The usage of light colors with hints of dark hues creates a perfect balance throughout this space. Users can read article books or even browse the internet to see upto date news on National Geographic. The circular stones are cushioned stepping stones that one may jump on when venturing through their journey.

279

280

281

Theatre Basement Level When coming below to the basement level, this is meant to represent the cave factor or the internal self whilst on the journey through the sacred spiral of National Geographic. The theatre was designed to resemble a dome figure where users can experience new documentaries showcased by National Geographic. Unlike typical theatres the seating arrangements are a bit altered where there are two sectional at a slanted angle to allow users to be in a lying position so as not to strain their bodies. The images depicted by the projector will be emitted at 360 degree therefor, every user will have a direct viewing. The purpose behind this space is to fully step away from reality and let the mind wonder.

282

Reception Level 2 Upon arriving onto the second level one is greeted with a similar format of the entryway on the ground level. The second primary element depicted in the yellow sash that tracks all around the space which is meant to represent the iconic yellow National Geographic frame. This is what will link the concept of sacred spiral to the ideology of the client. It is also a helpful signage and guidance for every user in this space. Every private office is acentuated with curved wood panelling that indicates their name and job persona, this enables users to visibily know their direction in the space. Both the front of the office space as well as the back are open to enable proper distribution of lighting as well as keep everyone in a friendly environment.

283

284

285

Private Office Level 2 Typical private offices are all dupilicated but for this particular client the private offices are meant to represent an 'in home office' where the layout of the space is very casual with enough circulation space for both clients and employees to move freely throughout the space. The goal is to have an environment that is welcoming and has a connection with warm and nature based colors with the usage of wood finishes and light wall finishes. The pattern on the floor has been carried out throughout the entire second level for the traffic will be high and having a similar floor finish through the entire space is beneficial.

286

Conference Room Level 2 Due to the fact that this company is vast sometimes there is a necessitty to have a good portion of conference rooms available for a variety of different events. In order to create enough space, the large and medium conference rooms are linked to one another but can be divided by a glass panel which is on a track allowing for privacy. The entire purpose is to create a space that is friendly to both the employees as well as any clients to feel as though it is not entirely formal. There is a good balance in natural lighting as well as artificial lighting which enables the space to be visibly clear for every user.

290 SITE MAP ANALYSIS

Due to the fact that Presidio is a very historical area in San Francisco it is an ideal place to have a company like National Geographic be placed in. In the surrounding areas there are open plains that typically host events like Off the Grid and picnics which will be hosted. With the addition of having a glimpse of the Golden Gate Bridge which is in the northern direction according to the property site.

Nefelibata (n.) lit. "cloud-walker"; one who lives in the clouds of their own imagination or dreams, or one who does not obey the conventions of society, literature or art

I would like to dedicate this book to my family, who have supported me throughout my life both academically and as an individual. I want to thank my parents for their love and care even though being far away from them for such a long period of my life. They have been the light at the end of the tunnel for me in several occasions. I also want to thank my sister for admiring me and showing me just how much I work and deserve to be proud of myself. I especially want to thank my mother who has visited me throughout my years and has seen me develop into what I am today. She has shown me that things take time and that our bodies need rest in order to function properly. She told me to push on because she knows how much I work and stress about the detailed perfectionism I strive throughout all my works. My father, thank you for showing me that no one is perfect and that people are allowed to make mistakes. I have a difficult time understanding that I am simply human and not wonder woman. He told me that no matter how hard I try to make something perfect it will never be and that I need to be please with what I have accomplished. I want to also thank my private tutor, Wendy Smith, who has known me since the age of nine years old and has seen me grow through my high school years. Even though she was not my tutor throughout my years in University she was part of a great portion of my school and private career. Thank you for helping me through tough moments and pushing me to become the woman that I am today. I also want to thank my friends who have been with me throughout these years and have seen my struggles but have boosted my confidence and strength to continue and push through midterms and finals. Thank you Ana Thereza, Kristina and Lucas who are my closests friends that have seen me grow.
