AFRICAN SUNRISE
Volunteering & Internships in Cape Town, South Africa
WELCOME TO AFRICAN SUNRISE “Tania Sincic and myself, started African Sunrise with a very clear vision. We wanted to provide interns and volunteers with hands-on, life-changing experiences in Cape Town, at Projects that we both hold dear to our hearts. We run our organisation with the mission of giving back - we as a company fundraise for projects, and take part wherever we can, uplifting our community and getting people involved.”
– Carina-Jayne Armstrong Director of African Sunrise
VOLUNTEERING To volunteer in South Africa is an experience you will never forget. All of our projects are hands-on, and you will get to work with children, teenagers, adults or the elderly, depending on your interests. Volunteering in South Africa is a great way to give back to the community, to make a difference in the lives of others, and to experience Cape Town. Minimum time to volunteer in South Africa with us is one month.
GAP YEAR VOLUNTEERING Deciding what to do on your Gap Year is often a difficult thing to do. You’ve just finished school and you have taken the decision to have a year ‘off’ before heading to University, College or work. How do you find a meaningful experience abroad, that is within your budget, and suits your needs and interests? African Sunrise Volunteering is a small team that will help you choose the right plan for your time off. Going abroad during your Gap Year is one of the best things you’ll do. You learn independence, social skills, communication skills and you get to learn about a whole new culture. We offer many hands-on projects and programmes to suit your personality and interests and where you can make the most impact. If you’re thinking of really making a difference, why not volunteer in one of our Community Projects. Often something as simple as just playing games with the children can make the biggest impact! You can choose which project would suit you best from the organisations we work closely with. Let us know if you’d like to speak to any of our past Volunteers and Interns, as this can be arranged, so you’ll get first-hand knowledge on what it will be like in Cape Town. You can choose the amount of time you’d like to spend in Cape Town, and you can also volunteer at a few different projects if you so wish. Contact us today to start planning your Gap Year in Africa!
INTERNSHIP Doing your internship abroad is often a tough decision to make. An internship in South Africa is a perfect place to do this, as our culture and heritage is so diverse, and we deal with very real issues of poverty, human rights violations, refugees, among many. Our South Africa internship projects are very carefully chosen to match your field of studies. We have partnered with many organizations in Cape Town, to give you the best possible internship experience, where you can learn, apply your knowledge, and be hands-on. The minimum stay for an internship is 3 months. We also offer 6 weeks field studies options.
FIELD STUDIES At African Sunrise, we offer a unique Intern/Volunteer experience - Field Studies. We currently have groups of about 20 students that are studying at the same University and completing the same course, that come over to Cape Town for 6 weeks to do Field Studies with a project of their choice. Field studies is a fantastic way of getting to know what it is like being part of an Organisation, and getting hands-on experience. Most of our students thus far are in the Social Work field, but we offer a range of different field studies, depending on your choice of degree or course. The students get to work with qualified Social Workers, children, adults and even in Old Age Homes. During the 6 week stay, students will also get to visit various places in Cape Town to learn about South African culture, and also get to do a bit of exploring. The scenic Garden Route is something that every student has loved, and we keep it as a tradition for every group that comes over.
ACCOMMONDATION IN CAPE TOWN Volunteers/Interns that stay for 1-3 months will share a room with another person. If you stay for more than 3 months, we do offer a single room. You can also request a single room for the duration of your stay. We have various houses that we place our volunteers and interns in. All the houses have wifi, kitchens, bathrooms, cupboard space, desks and bedding. The houses are a great place to meet other volunteers and students doing internships – all of our accommodation is in the suburb of Observatory in Cape Town. For larger groups, we use a Backpackers, which is a beautiful house with everything you need, including a braai area, huge garden, and communal areas. You also have the option of booking your own accommodation should you wish, and we then deduct that from the overall price of your package. We do recommend that we help you, if you never been to South Africa before or do not know anyone here.
WHY CHOOSE CAPE TOWN? There are many activities to chose from in Cape Town. Once you are settled, our team will tell you more about what there is to do, help you book things like skydiving, sharkcage diving, etc, and we also take you on a Cape Point Tour as part of your package. Here are just a few other activities: • Wine Tours • Garden Route • Community Soup Kitchen • Hiking • Table Mountain • Beaches • Shopping • Surfing • Comedy Nights • And much, much more

WORDS FROM A PREVIOUS SOCIAL WORKER INTERN “I didn’t chose to study social work to be able to change peoples’ lives, but rather because it is one of the things that I feel very strongly about. If I can give someone a helping hand or a good advice while doing what I love, then of course that feels really good. The same goes with my internship in South Africa. It wasn’t a choice based on some idea that I can affect the lives of the people I meet here, but rather on the idea that I can learn things here that I didn’t think I could in Sweden. If I get an opportunity to show some solidarity along the way, like spending some time talking to the people who are homeless in the area where I live at Breaking breads soup kitchen, then that feels amazing.” – Tove Byröd, Social worker intern
