Reflecting on the past year helps us to realize our successes and to put into perspective how much our shelter has grown. We are constantly gearing our projects toward the directive of our mission statement. Our goal is to always positively impact and benefit the community and to improve the quality of life for the people and the pets. Cedar Bend Humane Society has been a member of the Better Business Bureau for several years. This past year we were honored to have been awarded the Torch Award for business integrity. We were very proud to partner with the Gallagher Bluedorn Performing Arts Center and Cesar Millan Show. The Cedar Bend Humane Society, pets, and staff were very well represented. Cedar Bend Humane Society now offers a boarding service for the public, “The Mutt Hutt”. This has been a much needed service in the community. We are also happy to

say it is boarding with a purpose, as the proceeds will support the homeless animals at the shelter. Education has been on our radar this last year, as we partnered with 1Vision, to learn how to support our shelter growth and to acknowledge the many generous donors who share our passion for the animals and who are committed to our visions. We would like to extend a huge “Thank You” to all our donors for supporting the business and the many needs of the homeless animal population. We could not help them without your support and we encourage all entities to take ownership and invest in their local humane society. Thank you to the community for adopting from the humane society. Our adoptions have increased dramatically over the last year. Because you opened your hearts, these pets are receiving a second chance at life and a loving forever home.

We are constantly targeting the problems of animal over-population with many new programs. We currently provide in-house spay/neuter for all pets before placing them into their forever homes. The Trap/Neuter/ Release Program has been a lifesaver for the feral cats in the community and also cuts back on unwanted litters. The Barn-Cat program saves lives by offering healthy cats that may not be suitable as house pets for rodent control to rural farm homes. All cats in this program are altered so as to not add to the population with unwanted litters. We are pleased to partner with Waterloo Animal Control and to supply the hold and care services for the stray and unwanted pets from Black Hawk County, the city of Cedar Falls, and the city of Waterloo. We would like to express our gratitude to our partnering veterinarians. They are essential to the welfare of all our pets. “Thank You” to the many volunteers, fosters, and individuals who give of their time and talents. We value all the rescues and partnerships that work with us every day to save more lives. The Cedar Bend Humane Society would like to thank and acknowledge the community for helping us to reach our milestones. We have a very passionate and caring community and we could not achieve this without your support!

President’s Message

I have been President of the Cedar Bend Humane Society Board of Directors for seven years. I am the proud “mother” of two dogs; a twelve year old Dalmatian named Pelli and a six year old Schipperke mix named Jackson who I fostered and adopted through Cedar Bend Humane Society. At CBHS we all share the same mission: P.E.T.S. – PLACE. EDUCATE. TEACH. SHELTER. Place animals in life-long loving homes. Educate on the issues of humane care. Teach responsible pet ownership. Shelter the stray, neglected and unwanted. I would like to give a huge “Thank You” for the generosity and compassion shown by our supporters and volunteers. We ask for your continued enthusiasm for improving compassion, empathy, and appreciation for the special roles the animals and CBHS play. This is critically important for building our community and to give the animals the care and respect they deserve. This past year has seen many accomplishments. I believe the most important accomplishment has been the development of a diverse and effective Board that works extremely well with the co-directors, Kristy Gardner and Karla Beckman. This team approach has increased stability and has allowed us to move forward towards our goals from this past year. We are extremely proud of the newly opened “Mutt Hutt”. With the vision of the co-directors and the help from the Board of Directors, CBHS moved forward with

the building of a boarding facility, the Mutt Hutt, now open for public boarding of animals. All the proceeds from the boarding facility will directly benefit the animals of Cedar Bend Humane Society. We have goals for next year that continue our mission. These include increased fundraising, developing strong partnerships with donors, and continued education and outreach. I would like to give the Board of Directors a huge “Thank You”. You all have stepped up to the plate with giving extra time from your already packed schedules. Also, I would like to give a huge “Thank you” to Kristy and Karla for their passion and dedication to this shelter. This has been proven by the endless hours spent making sure everything is running smoothly. And, last but not least, a huge “Thank You” to the staff, for without them the shelter would not be open. as I am all as excited I hope you are d en re of Cedar B about the futu how y. chance at a new home. Pets up for adoption have no time limit and we put our resources to work helping find them homes. They are provided loving care while they wait for their fur-ever home.

Adoption Center Our Adoption Center can accommodate up to 42 dogs and 50 adoption cats. There is a quiet “meet & greet room, outside exercise pens, and dog-walking trails. These areas help prospective adopters spend time with their potential new family member. Choosing a shelter pet will reward you with a life-long companion and new best friend. There is no greater reward than to give a homeless animal a second chance at life!

Reducing Pet Overpopulation CBHS completed 1,041 spay and neuter surgeries Cedar Bend Humane Society believes spaying and neutering homeless pets is a major component of responsible pet ownership. By reducing the number of potential homeless, stray and abandoned pets, existing pets are more likely to receive the care and nurturing they need.

1,803 Animals Microchipped Microchipping is one of the best methods for identifying pets if they become lost. Cedar Bend Humane Society set a goal to microchip 1,000 animals in 2016. We exceeded our goal by 803 through hosting reduced cost microchip clinics resulting in 1,803 CBHS pets and community pets being microchipped.

If you are interested in having your pet microchipped, please call 319-232-6887 or follow the Cedar Bend Humane Society Facebook page for listings of upcoming microchip clinics within your community.

229 Animals Licensed • A family pet is lost every two seconds. • Over 10 million pets are lost each year. • One out of three pets are lost during their lifetimes. Cedar Bend Humane Society issued 229 pet licenses in 2016. Licensing your pet is also an important way to ensure your animals are returned home if they are lost. Licensing and rabies vaccinations ensure the pets in our community are happy and healthy. 6

264 Rescue Exchanges The Cedar Bend Humane Society strives to develop great relationships with many organizations! This year alone, over 264 pets were exchanged with partnering rescues. Rescue partnerships allow the pets to meet a larger audience, a different demographic, and expand their chances to find a loving home.

Lost and Found The Cedar Bend Humane Society provides lost and found pet services along with pet postings at www.CedarBendHumane.org.

If you find a stray pet, you may bring it to the intake building located at 1166 W. Airline Hwy., Waterloo between 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., seven days a week. Each stray animal arriving at the shelter is given a bordetella vaccine to prevent kennel cough, provided food, shelter, and immediate medical care if needed. If you are missing a pet, we strongly encourage you to check with us immediately. Call 319-232-6887 or 319-235-5335 or come to the shelter to identify/claim your pet. FOSTER PARENTS

Providing a Place to Heal & Thrive!

The CBHS receives stray, injured, and abandoned pets that may be too young to be placed up for adoption, or require a quiet environment to recover from surgery. The foster program is designed to give these pets a second chance at life and an opportunity to live long, happy, and healthy lives. CBHS Foster Families help us do just that! Through their dedication and commitment CBHS was able to save countless puppies and kittens in 2016.

Thank you to all of our foster parents for providing love, time, dedication, and a safe and nurturing environment.

CBHS Volunteers

We can’t thank you enough! It is hard to express how important CBHS volunteers are to the animals at the shelter. They spend countless hours caring for the needs of animals. They provide daily consistent love, exercise (in all kinds of weather), and attention to our “guests” while we find their forever homes. Volunteer opportunities with CBHS include

walking dogs, cleaning kennels, assisting with fundraising events, grounds beautification, cat interaction, pet enrichment, and CBHS programs. Are you interested in becoming a volunteer? Visit www.CedarBendHumane.org and fill out the volunteer application or e-mail cbhsvolunteer@gmail.com.

This means we will not turn away any animals based on age, health issues, behavioral problems, or aggression tendencies. Many animals entering our facility are healthy and good natured making them candidates for adoption. There are no time limits on how long cats and dogs can be on our adoption floor at the Cedar Bend Humane Society!

We also take in pets that are no longer wanted by their owners due to temperament concerns, and we shelter and care for the stray, abandoned, sick and injured which can make an animal harder to adopt. Many times these animals can be rehabilitated, but sometimes they cannot. In this case, it is our belief that euthanasia is the most humane alternative to an existence of suffering and pain, or living out their life confined to a kennel or cage.

The CBHS is the only facility in Black Hawk and surrounding counties that accepts ALL stay and abandoned animals. Without CBHS, there would be nowhere for many of these animals to go.

We strive to help the greatest number of animals with the resources we have. With the help and support of the community, we have made a definite impact for the homeless animals; however, it is far too big of a challenge for one single organization to solve all the problems facing companion animals. We continue to need your help and support to help us continue our mission. (Place, Educate, Teach and Shelter). Please consider a kennel sponsorship, or a donation to feed the shelter animals for the day. Your donation could support the Spay and Neuter program or make the difference between life and death if you support a feral cat through the TNR or Barn Cat program. One hundred and sixty-six cats were saved because of this program. Spaying and neutering is the cornerstone of reducing intake and pet overpopulation. Launching an in-house spay and neuter program has allowed us to prevent 1,041 unwanted litters. Other life-saving programs and services include lost and found and microchip clinics. Dog & Cat Boarding with a Purpose! Boarding fees support homeless animals at Cedar Bend Humane Society! The tradition of growth and expansion continues on the Cedar Bend Humane Society campus, in existence since 1910, CBHS arrived at our current location in 1968. In 2009, with generous donations from the community, we were able to build a new Adoption Center. This year we built a state of the art, climate-controlled dog and cat boarding facility on the CBHS campus, located at 1136 West Airline Highway in Waterloo.

19

We are especially excited since boarding fees will support the homeless, needy, and abandoned animals at Cedar Bend Humane Society. We hope you will stop out for a tour or call 319-233-0159. Let us pamper your pet in paradise!
