Annual Report July 2012 - June 2013 The Cedar Bend Humane Society commits itself to providing humane care for all animals under its protection, educating the community about responsible pet ownership, and to advancing the cause of kindness to animals.
From the Co-Directors’ Desk
Co-Directors Karla Beckman Director of Finance WOW! What a great year it has been for the Cedar Bend Humane Society!!! We want to extend a huge “THANK YOU” to everyone who has continued to support the shelter animals in the year 2012. As a non-profit organization, we rely solely upon donations from the public and local community business support. Every dollar and donation received will benefit the animals by helping to medicate, feed, groom, spay/neuter, and provide basic care and shelter for the homeless, abandoned, neglected, and unwanted animals of the Cedar Valley. Through your donations, gifts, and volunteer time, we are able to promote our mission and continue to grow and reach great goals! Community support is the key in making a difference in the lives of the hundreds of animals that come through our doors every year! We are proud to have partnered with numerous rescue organizations this past year. We want to extend our thanks to those who have worked with the CBHS to help save more lives! Due to the generosity of the community, 2
Kristy Gardner Director of Operations the Cedar Bend Humane Society was able to achieve some great accomplishments over the past year as outlined in this year’s annual report. We want to welcome and encourage everyone to get involved with their local shelter. Through education, community support, and rescue partnership, the Cedar Bend Humane Society continues to give homeless animals a second chance at life! Thank you for helping us to help them!

Board of Directors

It’s been another exciting year in the life of Cedar Bend Humane Society. I have proudly served as President of the Board for the last four years. The CBHS has been part of my life for a long time. My husband and I have two dogs; a ten year old Dalmatian named Pelli and a three year old Schipperke mix named Jackson. We fostered and adopted Jack from the CBHS. The most rewarding part of my involvement with CBHS has been seeing the development of CBHS under the directorship of Karla Beckman and Kristy Gardner. Financially, it has been a good year, thanks to the continued support of the community. We rely heavily on donations from the public, the adoption of animals, and shopping in our “Paws Awhile” retail store. Each day, we are amazed and grateful for the generosity and compassion of our supporters. I offer you our deepest appreciation. This past year has seen many accomplishments. I believe one of
the most important accomplishments has been the continuing development of a diverse and well-functioning Board of Directors that works extremely well with the co-directors. I would like to give the Board a huge “Thank You” for all of your help and giving of your time. There is no denying that the work done by Kristy, Karla, and the staff is both exhausting and uplifting. I would like to give a huge “Thank You” to all of them for their passion and dedication to this shelter. The shelter continues to thrive because of their unwavering dedication and hard work. We are proud how far we have come over the years. This annual report reflects how much we have improved. I hope you are all as excited as I am about the future of Cedar Bend Humane Society. I know the community, the Board, Kristy, Karla, and the staff share the same goals of rescuing, protecting, and saving lives of abandoned and homeless animals. Anita Kabele President of the Board, Cedar Bend Humane Society 3
Intake Center The CBHS Intake Center is responsible for answering all incoming phone calls and handling all animals entering the shelter. We receive all types of animals: cats, dogs, pigs, ferrets, parakeets, gerbils, mice, rabbits, rats, guinea pigs, reptiles, and a variety of wildlife. There are many reasons why these animals arrive at the Cedar Bend Humane Society. They may be stray, abandoned, lost, sick, injured, or not wanted by their families. Animals that arrive at the shelter are examined by the CBHS medical technician. Vaccinations are given and a holding period is determined. Stray animals are held between three and
seven days depending on the requirements of the city or county in which the animal was found. If an owner does not claim the stray animal, ownership will revert to the CBHS at the end of the predetermined holding period. Every animal is evaluated according to health and temperament. Once a pet is determined to be an adoption candidate, it receives the necessary vet care and is moved to the Adoption Center where it will remain until it finds a new forever home! If you wish to surrender a pet or need help with a stray animal, please contact the CBHS intake center for additional information and surrender fees. Hours of operation 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., everyday. 319-232-6887

Adoption Center The Cedar Bend Humane Society’s Adoption Center provides a safe haven for hundreds of animals that are looking for a special family! The Adoption Center can accommodate up to 40 adoption dogs and 75 adoption cats at one time. Many times, the CBHS has a variety of pocket pets waiting for new homes! Once a pet enters the adoption center, we are committed to finding it a home, and it has no time limit determining its stay. Staff and volunteers work to ensure the animals residing at the adoption center stay healthy and happy while waiting for that family they can call their own! This is accomplished through the “animal enrichment” program which provides each pet with toys, food puzzles, outside exercise time, and social interaction with other pets and volunteers. The Adoption staff is a very dedicated bunch. Their goal is to help each family pick out and adopt

an appropriate pet to fit their lifestyle. This is done through an application and interview process. The CBHS has quiet “meet & greet” rooms, outside exercise pens, and a dog walking trail. When you choose to open your home to a shelter pet, you will not only receive a new life-long companion that has been health and temperament tested, you will also receive continued support from the CBHS staff throughout your new pet’s lifetime. Memorial and Planned Giving Leave a legacy today to provide for animals tomorrow. Your support is a gift of life and hope for thousands of homeless, abandoned, and unwanted dogs and cats who pass through our shelter. Your generosity is essential to bettering their lives. “Planned Giving” is an all-inclusive term used to describe the many types of gifts an individual may use to continue suppporting the mission of the CBHS. Some of these options include: • Outright Gifts - often considered the most desirable type of planned gift as funds may be used immediately. • Bequests - gifts granted through your will or trust at the time of your death. The gift may be a set dollar amount or a specific itemized property such as stocks, bonds, land, equipment, etc. Some individuals leave a residual gift, which is a bequest of their estate (or percentage of the estate) that remains after all debts and other obligations are paid. • Life Insurance Policies - there are two ways to do this. Name the shelter as the beneficiary of a life insurance policy on which you pay premiums, with the proceeds payable upon your death. The second way is to buy an insurance policy naming the shelter as the beneficiary and make a gift of the policy itself. By donating the policy, an immediate income tax deduction is available to you. In addition, if you continue to pay premiums on our behalf, the premium payments are also deductible. • Charitable Remainder Trusts - trusts are typically used when your gift is $50,000 or more. The body of the trust becomes available to the Cedar Bend Humane Society upon your death. • Retained Life Estate Agreements - may be used to give property to the shelter while you retain the right to use the property for the remainder of your lifetime. • Charitable Gift Annuities - involve a transfer of money or securities in exchange for the shelter’s agreement to pay you a quaranteed fixed income for life. They may also be set up to pay through the lifetime of a second person, such as a spouse or child. The amount of income received depends on the age when the annuity begins. Your tax professional can advise you on how to maximize your tax advantage with this method of giving. There are many types of planned giving arrangements, whichever one you choose, you always have the option of directing how the funds will be used. An unrestricted gift may be used for the immediate needs of the shelter and animals or it may be set aside for use toward a larger, future project. A restricted gift may be made for a specific purpose that you designate. Some examples include veterinary care for injured animals, the spay / neuter program, human education, or facilities maintenance and improvement.

Annual Events One of the goals of the Cedar Bend Humane Society is community education about responsible pet ownership. One of the most important elements of being a responsible pet owner is ensuring that your animal is spayed or neutered in order to help prevent overpopulation. In February, local veterinarian clinics partnered with the CBHS to help stop overpopulation. Each clinic performed the neuter process on farm cat(s) and/or tame stray cat(s). The cost was $15.00 and this fee was donated to the CBHS. opt

Animal Enrichment at CBHS Animals can’t tell us when they are stressed or bored, but their behavior speaks volumes. In dogs, this can be seen as excessive barking, chewing, destroying toys and blankets, jumping, resource guarding, spinning movement in the kennel, depression, or aggression toward people or other animals. In cats, it may be lethargic behaviors, hiding, attacking other animals, sitting in litter boxes, or even hair loss. All stressed animals become more susceptible to illness and may tend to have a harder time finding an adoptive home. This is why animal enrichment is so important! Enrichment programs are designed to engage animals in different ways to prevent boredom, target animals showing stress or anxiety symptoms, and work to make animals at ease. Enrichment deals directly with animal contentment and emotional health.
the dog kennels and cat rooms every day. Cats and dogs are scent-oriented creatures and by varying the scents, we are able to alter their environment. Every day, we provide each animal with a different activity. The activities are designed to challenge them mentally and to take time to solve. We use food puzzles, frozen treats in the middle of ice cubes, chews such as rawhides, and many other activities. Our enrichment program is run completely on donations so our activities are dependent on the treats and items donated.
Targeted Enrichment
The CBHS Program consists of two branches: General Enrichment and Targeted Enrichment. General enrichment is to prevent boredom and provide variety and entertainment for each animal. Targeted enrichment is designed to specifically help the animals who are struggling to cope with the shelter environment. In our shelter, animals partake in appropriate enrichments to aid in their physical and emotional health.
General Enrichment
12
General enrichment consists of four elements: exercise, socialization, scent, and activity. We ask all CBHS volunteers to donate (5) hours of animal care a month through walking, socialization, enrichment and animal handling at events. With 143 active volunteers, our goal is to give our animals over 700 hours of interaction a month. The public is encouraged to participate by presenting treats to our pets, especially for good behaviors. Our staff is responsible for distributing scents. Different scents are placed in
Targeted enrichment is designed for certain animals that are in need of more TLC in order to deal with shelter environment. Some dogs and cats need additional snuggle time, office visits to get away from their kennels, more outside time, skills training, individual attention, and some need alone time and a place to hide to find security. Staff and Volunteers work to identify animals and their specific needs to help prepare them for their forever homes. If you would like to help, please consider becoming a volunteer. Committed volunteers, who are able to come out to the shelter on a regular basis and support our animals, are vital to the success of our organization. If you don’t have time to volunteer, please consider organizing a donation drive or consider making a donation to support the ongoing efforts of the Cedar Bend Humane Society. Please help us to fulfill our mission of providing humane care for all animals under our protection, educating the community about responsible pet ownership, and advancing the cause of kindness to all animals.
