*When Princess arrived at the Shelter, she adopted Gail, an Animal Control Officer. Princess would whine and cry whenever Gail left her side. Gail, being the “softie” that she is, took Princess home to foster and help her with her special fear issues! Because of Gail’s dedication, Princess was able to be adopted.

Foster Parents Needed! The Cedar Bend Humane Society is in need of foster families! Becoming a foster parent is a rewarding experience! You will have the opportunity to care for pets that need extra TLC, prior to entering the Cedar Bend Humane Society’s adoption program. If you have the ability and the time to take a needy pet into your home for nurturing and care; this is the program for you! The CBHS receives hundreds of lost, abandoned, and unwanted animals every year. Often these wayward critters come in sick, injured or as infants too young to be placed on our adoption floor. The foster program is designed to give these pets a second chance at life and an opportunity for them to be adopted. The foster program is vital to the mission of the Cedar Bend Humane Society by providing humane care for all animals under its protection! If you are interested in partnering with the CBHS to help save lives, please visit our website at www.CedarBendHumane.org for more information or to fill out a “foster family” application!

Animal Enrichment at CBHS Animals can’t tell us when they are stressed or bored, but their behavior speaks volumes. In dogs, this can be seen as excessive barking, chewing, destroying toys and blankets, jumping, resource guarding, spinning movement in the kennel, depression, aggression toward people or other animals. In cats, it may be lethargic behaviors, hiding, attacking other animals, sitting in litter boxes, or even hair loss. All stressed animals become more susceptible to illness and may tend to have a harder time finding an adoptive home. This is why animal enrichment is so important! Enrichment programs are designed to engage animals in different ways to prevent boredom, target animals showing stress or anxiety symptoms, and work to make the animal at ease. Enrichment deals directly with animal contentment and emotional health.

in the dog kennels and cat rooms every day. Cats and dogs are scent oriented creatures and by varying the scents we are able to alter their environment. Every day we provide each animal with a different activity. The activities are designed to challenge them mentally and to take time to solve. We use food puzzles, frozen treats in the middle of ice cubes, chews such as rawhides, and many other activities. Our enrichment program is run completely on donations so our activities are dependent on the treats and items donated.

Targeted Enrichment

The CBHS Program consists of two branches: General Enrichment and Targeted Enrichment. General enrichment is to prevent boredom and provide variety and entertainment for each animal. Targeted enrichment is designed to specifically help the animals who are struggling to cope with the shelter environment. Animals, in our shelter, partake in appropriate enrichments to aid in their physical and emotional health.

General Enrichment General enrichment consists of four elements: exercise, socialization, scent, and activity. We ask all CBHS volunteers to donate (5) hours of animal care a month through walking, socialization, enrichment and animal handling at events. With 143 active volunteers, our goal is to give our animals over 700 hours of interaction a month. The public is encouraged to participate by presenting treats to our pets, especially for good behaviors. Our staff is responsible 6 for distributing scents. Different scents are placed

Targeted enrichment is designed for certain animals that are in need of more TLC in order to deal with shelter environment. Some dogs and cats need additional snuggle time, office visits to get away from their kennels, more outside time, skills training, individual attention, and some need alone time and a place to hide to find security. Staff and Volunteers work to identify animals and their specific needs to help prepare them for their forever homes. If you would like to help, please consider becoming a volunteer. Committed volunteers, who are able to come out to the shelter on a regular basis and support our animals, are vital to the success of our organization. If you don’t have time to volunteer, please consider organizing a donation drive or consider making a donation to support the ongoing efforts of the Cedar Bend Humane Society. Please help us to fulfill our mission of providing humane care for all animals under our protection, educating the community about responsible pet ownership, and advancing the cause of kindness to all animals.

Let Us Entertain You! Nursing homes use physical, mental and emotional healthcare services to support their clients’ well-being. Animal shelters require the same symbiotic relationship in order for their animals to remain happy and healthy. Manor Care in Waterloo requested the Cedar Bend Humane Society to bring animals to visit their clients. Interaction with the shelter animals has shown strong therapeutic effects on the mental and emotional well-being of their residents. Giving shelter pets a break from their daily routine, time away from the shelter environment, and one on one time with the Manor Care residents also supports the mental and emotional health of the animals.

We have regular scheduled visits with the following entities: • Manor Care in Waterloo 3rd Friday of each month • Western Home in Cedar Falls 1st Thursday of each month • Ridgeway Place 1st Monday of each month

Our goal is to provide a pleasant experience for the people we visit and to also give CBHS animals a chance to enjoy daily moments of interaction.

Each animal is temperament tested before it is placed up for adoption. Staff carefully choose which animals do well in specific environments when selecting animals for events, school visits or nursing home visits. Excited, barking dogs may be too intense for a nursing home visit. Some people prefer to snuggle with a small lap dog, others may prefer to pet the head of a large dog that stands or sits beside them.

Our nursing home visits started with Manor Care in April of 2012. Since then, we have increased our visits and partnered with other nursing homes to improve the lives of their residents and to also improve the lives of the residents of the Cedar Bend Humane Society.

One to three animals are taken to each facility per visit. We rotate cat and dog visits and provide different animals each time. We strive to meet the needs of all residents and try to make sure all CBHS animals are getting the necessary socialization in the community. We would like to extend a big “Thank You” to the nursing homes and their residents who have helped the Cedar Bend Humane Society advance the cause of kindness to all animals under its care and also to the CBHS volunteers who have provided humane care during handling and transport.

5,660 pounds of pet food to families requesting assistance. This program embodies the mission of the Cedar Bend Humane Society by educating the community about responsible pet ownership and advancing the cause of kindness to all animals.

This program was designed to provide “pet owners” food assistance during brief periods of financial hardship. The goal is to help keep “owned” pets from becoming homeless by providing families with resources to feed their animals during times of need.

The “Paws Pantry” distributes pet food twice a month at the Northeast Iowa Food Bank. For additional information on how you can receive assistance, or donate to the cause of feeding the homeless pet population please contact the shelter at 319-232-6887 or visit our website at www.
