14th Annual Neuter - a - Tomcat Schedule Did you know... • • • •
The average number of litters a cat produces is one to two litters a year. The average number of kittens born per litter is four to six. Only 10% of the animals received by shelters have been spayed or neutered. The average cost to spay or neuter a pet is $202.
One of the goals of the Cedar Bend Humane Society is community awareness about responsible pet ownership. One of the most important elements of being a responsible pet owner is ensuring that your animal is spayed/neutered in order to help prevent overpopulation. Local veterinary clinics are partnering with the Cedar Bend Humane Society to help stop pet overpopulation. They will be hosting the 14th Annual Neuter-A-Tomcat event in February.

Happy 15th Birthday Jake! The Cedar Bend Humane Society has come a long way over the years. Many years ago, animals arriving at the shelter that tested positive for heartworm were usually euthanized due to lack of funding and resources available to treat them. The CBHS staff struggled with these decisions. When Major, a 3-year-old yellow labrador, arrived at the shelter in 2003 and tested positive for heartworm, the CBHS staff decided to make a financial plea on his behalf. Major spent his days in the lobby of the shelter. CBHS Adoption Counselors told visitors his story. Here is the rest of Major’s story as written by his current owner.
Jake’s Story We first met Jake (called Major by his previous owner) in the spring of 2003 when my husband, Mark Parmenter, stopped by the Cedar Bend Humane Society to donate some supplies. Jake was in a separate cage with a sign that said he was not available for adoption. Mark was immediately smitten by him and asked why he wasn't available. Kristy Gardner (currently the Co-Director of the CBHS, but at the time she was an Adoption Counselor) said he was heartworm positive. My husband asked if the shelter would consider adopting him out if we could pay for the heartworm treatment. I met Jake a few days later. Most importantly, our dog Darby (chocolate lab rescued from the Oskaloosa shelter) liked him. We agreed to pay for the treatment. Darby was a very active dog, so we knew we couldn’t keep Jake calm during his recovery and treatment. The key to our adoption of Jake rested on the willingness of the CBHS staff to keep him at the shelter for the duration of his treatment. The staff called Jake the "Executive Director" because most days he stayed behind the reception desk. We are forever grateful to the shelter staff for keeping Jake so that we could adopt him once he could interact with Darby. Jake is a member of the Pet Pals pet therapy organization - www.petpalscedarvalleyia. org. He passed his temperament test on September 30, 2006. Jake and I volunteered with Hospice of Mercy in Hiawatha until he “retired” in 2014. I achieved a 100-hour designation this year; I’d estimate that at least 80% of those hours are pet therapy with Jake. We are so happy that he has helped a lot of Hospice patients and their family members over many years. Jake will turn 15 years old in February of 2015. He has slowed down this year; he has arthritis in his hips and has lost a lot of his sight and hearing. He still loves meal time and nap time. We are blessed to have him in our family and thank the CBHS staff for making it possible for us to adopt him! 6

We hope that you will find it in your heart to make a life-saving donation to help animals like Fisher and friends! Fisher came to the shelter with a fishing lure stuck in his paw. Once he is fully recovered he will be available for adoption.
Fisher Along with medical needs, the Cedar Bend Humane Society gives care to new arrivals, such as these sweet pups! Your donation helps them and other litters of kittens and puppies be medically ready for adoption.
