! s l i a T y p p a H If they didn’t, they informed Chris that he could come back the next day and get him. So Chris drove back home. Just as he arrived home at 3:00 p.m. he got a call from CBHS saying that he could have “Duke” if he got back there by 4:30! Chris made the 1.5 hour drive back to Waterloo to get OUR dog!
For several months, I kept talking to my husband about wanting to adopt a dog, hopefully a Golden Retriever or a Lab mix. Chris would always come up with reasons and excuses why we shouldn’t get another dog. (We currently have a 13 year old Shiba Inu named Bogey.) Without my knowledge one day in mid-July 2012, my husband searched on the internet for a dog to join our family. He found a
6
dog he thought would be perfect. “Duke” was his name, and he was located at Cedar Bend Humane Society in Waterloo. On Friday, July 20th while I was at work, Chris decided to make the 1.5 hr. trip up to Waterloo to meet “Duke” along with Bogey. They had a good visit with the shy, but energetic Golden Retriever and Chris was interested in adopting him. There were already a few families that had expressed interest in him, but a staff member told Chris that they would contact the family they had selected to adopt “Duke” and find out if they still wanted him.
When I arrived home from work that day, I called Chris to see where he was. Chris told a fib and said he was golfing and that he would be home at 6:30. He did say that he had a big surprise for me though… The doorbell rang at about the time Chris said he would be home…I went to the door and there he was with OUR NEW DOG!! I was so shocked and so elated with joy!! I had an overwhelming feeling that it was just meant to be - that this dog was meant to join our family! We decided the next day to change his name to Riley. Riley has been the BEST dog, and he gets along well with Bogey. He has added so much to our lives!! It is such a great feeling to rescue a dog – I always advocate and encourage people to search out shelters for pets that need a good home! Thank you for choosing us to make Riley’s forever home, our home!

Nairobi Heads to College! Nairobi, a young male black Labrador mix, arrived at the Cedar Bend Humane Society in December of 2012 as a stray taken in by the City of Waterloo. He was thin, malnourished, injured and full of worms. His injuries were treated, his temperament tested, and he was put up for adoption. After 3 months, he was still not adopted due to his high energy and intensity. The Cedar Bend Humane Society tried to secure a foster home for Nairobi through a local rescue. The rescue agreed to help, but before he was able to be moved, while being handled, Nairobi became very anxious and bit an animal control officer. The Cedar Bend Humane Society revaluated Nairobi’s options. Heartbroken, the CBHS staff searched for a solution. Nairobi’s high energy and his intensity needed to be channeled. Alan Malone, CBHS Volunteer and Education Coordinator, and the CBHS staff conducted additional behavior tests on Nairobi. These exercises were filmed and submitted to the Midwest K-9 narcotics detection school in Des Moines. Good News! Nairobi was accepted into their program! His schooling and training will start, helping to channel his high energy and enthusiasm. We hope Nairobi will move on to become a police dog and/or a narcotics dog. Congratulations Nairobi! May you graduate with flying colors! You can check out the Midwest K-9 website at http://midwestk9.com/midwestk9/ Home.html

Volunteer and Education How do I volunteer for the Cedar Bend Humane Society? The first step will be to fill out the on-line volunteer application available at www.CedarBendHumane.org. All applications are now electronic. Dates and times of informational orientations will be emailed to you after you submit your application. Once you find a session you can attend, please email Alan at cbhsvolunteer@gmail.com. Registration is required due to the limited sizes of classes.
school or in your community to collect various new or used items from our Wish List such as towels, blankets, and pet supplies which you can then donate to our shelter. • Organize your class or troop to create food puzzles, or bake treats for dogs, or make cat blankets or rice socks for young or abandoned animls.
Is there a fee? There is a $15 volunteer fee. CBHS is a non-profit organization, and the fee helps to cover costs for volunteer t-shirts, I.D.’s, maintaining the volunteer database and training materials. Potential volunteers are able to take the orientation free of charge. Then, if a volunteer wants to continue, the fee must be paid when they return to take the handling and cleaning class.
2012 Cedar Bend Humane Society Volunteer of the Year – Kathy Gors.
How old do you have to be to volunteer? Volunteers must be at least 16 years of age to volunteer. Anyone under 16 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian who also plans on becoming an active volunteer, completing all of the CBHS volunteer orientations and training and will be with the minor whenever the minor is volunteering. Anyone under 18 must have the waiver of liability signed by a parent or legal guardian. Of course, you do not have to work directly in the shelter to help the animals. We do have a few options that groups or students might want to try: • Host a donation drive at your

One of the goals of the Cedar Bend Humane Society is community education about responsible pet ownership. One of the most important elements of being a responsible pet owner is ensuring that your animal is spayed or neutered in order to help prevent overpopulation. In February, these local veterinarian clinics partnered with the Cedar Bend Humane Society to help stop overpopulation. Each clinic listed below performed the neuter process on farm cat(s) and/or tame stray cat(s). The cost was $15.00 and this fee was donated to the Cedar Bend Humane Society.
