Welcome to the 47th Scholastic Art Awards The year 2020 changed the world and challenged the schooling of all our children across the state of Illinois and the world. School years are demanding enough without the additional chaos and agony of not being able to meet in person. We know teachers and their students fought bravely all year long to teach and attend school as best they could under the harrowing circumstances. We recognize them for their bravery and perseverance. This year eight schools were able to enter, and all eight schools had work accepted. They are Anna-Jonesboro High School, Carbondale Community High School, Harrisburg High School, Marion High School, Massac County High School, Nashville High School, Pinckneyville Community High School, and Zeigler Royalton High School. In the pre-covid January 2020, we received 557 individual entries and 17 portfolios from 14 schools. We juried in 118 individual entries and 6 portfolios. 34 received Gold Keys, 30 received Silver Keys. One portfolio received a Gold Key, and two portfolios received Silver Keys. Two students last year received awards in New York. They were: Josephine Barton, Mt Vernon High School, Gold Medal, American Visions Medal for Ceramics- titled Unwritten Dream. Chloe Dover, Marion High School, Silver Medal for Photography titled Silent Skies. For the 2021 awards: 8 schools entered and were judged and all 8 made it in! The Cedarhurst judges reviewed 297 individual entries and 14 portfolios. They selected 108 individual entries and 7 portfolios. This year 20 Gold Keys for individual entries were awarded, 1 Gold Key portfolio. 37 Silver Keys for individual entries were awarded, with 4 Silver Keys for portfolios. 51 Honorable Mention for individual entries, and 2 Honorable Mentions for portfolios. Cedarhurst recognizes the difficult year it has been and remains, and we congratulate all the teachers and students who entered as well as those chosen. We thank our judges, Daniel Overturf, Craig Rhodes, Rachel Ensor, Judy Mason, and Sam Howard. We thank our Counselors who award every year the Administrative Counselors Scholarship. This year the Scholarship judges selected Alastair Webster, Zeigler Royalton High School for the portfolio titled Cryptids Unleashed. Teacher was Michael Berry. We thank our Scholastics Administrative Counselors Awards Committee: Alaina Cusamano, Committee Chair; Joe Gliosi; Greg Gibbs; Carol Wilkinson; and Chloe Flanigan. We all look forward to a better and productive New Year! Rusty Freeman Director of Visual Arts Cedarhurst Center for the Arts
The Scholastic Art Awards of Southern Illinois
For the 2021 installment of The Scholastic Art Awards of Southern Illinois, high school students from eight counties were represented. Area art teachers selected the works of art entered into the competition, choosing their students’ most ambitious efforts. This year, 311 examples from 8 schools were submitted to a panel of five jurors. After careful examination, the judges selected 115 works for inclusion in the exhibition. Every work of art selected for exhibition receives an Award. Silver Key and Gold Key Award recipients are identified on the label. This year, 37 artworks and 4 portfolios were selected for Silver Key Awards and 20 artworks and 1 portfolio were presented with Gold Key Awards. The exhibition’s most prestigious award category is the American Visions Award Nominees. The judges nominate five works of art for this category. The five American Vision Award nominees and the Gold Key Award recipients are submitted in early February for judging in the national competition. The national jurors in New York will select the American Visions Award recipient for the region from the five regional nominees. All artwork will be returned to the students at the conclusion of the regional exhibition. An activity of the John R. and Eleanor R. Mitchell Foundation. This program is partially supported by a grant from the Illinois Arts Council, a state agency. The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards are administered by the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers, Inc.
The John R. and Eleanor R. Mitchell Foundation Administrative Counselor Scholarship
Cedarhurst’s Board of Administrative Counselors have sponsored The Scholastic Art Awards exhibition for 47 straight years! Every year the Counselors have awarded The Counselor Scholarship, a monetary award. This scholarship is given to the high school senior desiring to study art in college and who has produced the year’s Outstanding Portfolio of artwork. The Scholastic Art Awards exhibition at Cedarhurst for over four decades has provided students with a valuable chance to learn about the process of a major juried show and the thrill of seeing their work displayed in an art museum. This exhibition also allows the community to see the wonderful work done by our local and regional art educators. Even when work is not chosen, students may realize that personal creative expression is its own reward. The important lesson is to not give up, to keep working at what you love, and to allow all the arts to enrich your life. Congratulations to all the student-artists, their teachers, and their families for participation in this very special exhibition!
