Not a bad book, but not a great book either. More like, the ONLY book if you want to learn modern C. I would have liked to see some more useful examples instead of simple demonstration protects. A little bit more fun perhaps, or at least as much fun as a programming language such as C allows us to have. Perhaps a larger project that is developed throughout the book, with smaller exercises and examples leading up to it. Also, C is cryptic and low-level enough as it is. There really is no need to call variables something equally cryptic. Call something "pointer", not "ptr". Or "counter" instead of "ctr". With just a little more imagination, this super dry tech book could be made into something that's actually enjoyable to read. I would have also liked to see at least a little bit more of an exploration of IDEs, as well as command line tools to use. It is discussed that they exist of course, but that area of the book could still do with a little more of an expansion rather than a lack thereof. Other than these few shortcomings, the book does explain C well enough to understand, even to people new to the language. It's not for the total n00b of course - but then, C is not something anyone would recommend a newbie coder to begin with anyway. Overall, 4 stars from me.
