Synopsis
Act 1 - It is the summer of 1942. Joshua Cohen is trying to survive in the Warsaw Ghetto with his wife, Sarah. He is the Cantor for his father, a well respected Rabbi in the Ghetto. Sarah works at an orphanage. Joshua faces the pressure of induction into the resistance movement from his friend, Simon. He is also constantly harassed by a Jewish Policeman named Levi who is jealous of Joshua’s popularity with the people, not to mention his wife. After being targeted and humiliated by Levi for holding a public worship service (the interment for Joshua’s father in the Jewish graveyard), Joshua’s strategy of maintaining a low profile is shattered. His natural leadership ability constantly impels him to encourage his beleaguered friends in the Ghetto, thereby getting him into danger with the authorities. Finally, he is imprisoned at the hand of Levi. The new Rabbi in the Ghetto pays for his release, but as Joshua tries to undo a terrible mistake he committed at the graveyard, Simon finds him and demands he find out where the trains are going with all the imprisoned Jews. Joshua finds himself on the outskirts of Treblinka and discovers the horrible truth. In trying to warn Sarah and the people of the Ghetto, Joshua is subdued and rendered unconscious. Act 2 - Joshua dreams of a life where he could be the kind of man his father would have noticed. He finds himself in a small village in first century Galilee. Realizing his dream of dynamic leadership, Joshua leads a band of zealots, of whom Simon is one. Their antipathy towards Levi erupts to an act of rage. As Simon tries to kill Levi, the Rabbi steps between them and saves Levi’s life. Simon is so greatly influenced by the Rabbi that he leaves his Zealot life to follow him – as does Levi. The high priestly family of Jerusalem begins influencing Joshua for their own ends – trying to place him at odds with the charismatic Rabbi. On the heels of a public debate over taxation, Joshua tries to incite an insurrection in the Temple precincts. He is again struck down and awakes to find himself back in Warsaw. His execution is imminent. Epilogue - Joshua finds himself once more in the Jewish graveyard of the Warsaw Ghetto. He is unprepared for what he encounters there.
