Colour of the Year 2019 Living Coral By Niall Wimsey
T
he vibrant but gentle ‘Living Coral’ is Pantone’s official colour of 2019 and is said to offer shelter, warmth and nourishment in an ever changing and unknown world.
EDIBLES: Runner Bean ‘Sunset’ - This rare variety sports wonderful salmon-pink blossoms, valued for its edible beans and ornamental, vigorous vines.
“Sociable and spirited, the engaging nature of Pantone ‘Living Coral’ welcomes and encourages lighthearted activity,” the colour authority describes.
Drying Beans ‘Borlotti’ - A vigorous Italian variety of bean climbing to 20 feet tall. Its 6” long pods are bright coral pink filled with cream coloured beans featuring red streaks in late summer.
Following last years colour and the yearning to try out different creative abilities, ‘Living Coral’ encourages this through their inclinations of playful expression.
Corn ‘Pink Popcorn’ - Stately tall plants are attractive in the summer garden; producing an excellent popping corn that yields lots of fluffy white kernels with a great rich flavour. The beautiful pink to mauve kernels are attractive for decoration.
We’ve chosen a few of our favourite plants incorporating the colour coral to help inspire you this season and to encourage creativity, adding a touch of warmth to your garden.
PERENNIALS:
Peony ‘Pink Hawaiian Coral’ - This Peony lives up to its name with semi-double blooms that arrive in a sunset of colours, including: coral, peach, and melon shades in early summer. Very fragrant and packed with petals, it is exceptionally easy to grow and easy to care for. Hemerocallis Rainbow Rhythm® ‘Orange Smoothie’ is a superbly colourful daylily that will give your garden an extended splash of oranges and light rose-pink. Expect flowers in summer and then again later in the season. Daylilies can tolerate a wide variety of conditions but flower best in full sun. Heuchera ‘Georgia Peach’ - Bred for heat and humidity tolerance. In spring, large coral-peach coloured leaves with a showy silver overlay accent the lush habit. Foliage colour intensifies to rose-purple in fall and winter.
Rose ‘At Last’

SHRUBS: Japanese Maple ‘Coral Bark’ - Striking coral coloured stems provide interest throughout the winter months after the autumnal gold leaves have dropped. Leaves in spring emerge chartreuse green providing dappled shade throughout the summer months. Can be used as a medium sized shade tree or excellent in containers on a patio, which will keep its size in check. Rose ‘At Last’® is exceptionally easy to grow! It is very disease resistant, meaning you can spend more time admiring its wonderfully perfumed blooms rather than spraying them! Its large sunset orange flowers have tinges of pink and provide an endless display from summer to early winter if the weather remains mild. It has the beauty of a Tea Rose whilst its care needed is as simple as a landscape rose.
Phormium ‘Jester’ - An evergreen flax with showy ribbons of coral-pink, green, and lime green are a delightful addition to cut flower arrangements. Great for use as a mid-border accent, in mass plantings or as a container specimen. Berberis ‘Rose Glow’ - Richly coloured foliage on graceful branching makes this a wonderful hedge or a single accent plant. Deep rose-red foliage is mottled with white and green in spring, bringing wonderful, warm colour into the landscape. Bright red berries in fall and winter. A great, deer resistant choice!
ANNUALS: Calibrachoa ‘Superbells Coralina’ - Covered with hundreds of coral-pink flowers from early spring all the way through to the first light frosts. Growing 6 to 10” tall, the long trailing branches cascade over the sides of hanging baskets and containers. Superbena Royale ‘Peachy Keen’ - Superbena Royale Verbenas are vigorous and mounded, but will trail over the sides of containers. They will function as both spillers and fillers in combination planters and are best planted at the front when used in landscape beds. They bloom earlier and easier than other Superbena varieties.
Coral Bark Maple
Calibrachoa ‘Superbells’ Coralina
Heuchera ‘Georgia Peach’
Runner Bean ‘Sunset’
Canna ‘Toucan Coral’ - This Canna Lily will bloom all summer and it is extremely heat tolerant, loving both heat and humidity. They are adaptable and can take damp conditions, but they are not especially water needy. A great addition to your summer display. Bring them indoors for the winter and back outside the following summer, for another season of colour.
For those of you who are yet to venture into the world of gardening we here at Cedar Rim Nursery believe this to be the best year to get started. For those of you already well versed in the plant world and wanting to make some changes to your existing garden we have the best selection of plants, pots, fountains and statuary to create a wonderful new space for you and your family.

TURF OUT YOUR LAWN
M
any people are growing tired with the constant battle of keeping their conventional lawn looking good. The ongoing invasion of unwanted weeds and now damage caused by birds and raccoons feasting on the beloved Chafer Grub mean that many are seeking alternatives to the traditional lawn.
With ever more common periods of drought during the summer months and the water restrictions associated with them, our traditional lawns are looking tired and brown.
1
Although ripping up acres of existing grass and replacing it with something else won’t exactly make sense financially; we can look at locations where smaller areas of grass might be replaced with something far easier to care for and something that looks much nicer for the majority of the year. Below we have provided a list of a few great alternatives to grass, which will save you time on mowing, stay greener for longer and will also reduce your impact on the environment by conserving water as well as reducing the use of fertilizers and weed killers.
2
TOP PLANTS FOR LAWN ALTERNATIVES: If you only have a small patch of grass, turning this over to groundcovers that don’t mind foot traffic will look much more inviting during the summer months. Some groundcovers can also offer added benefit of flowers (great for pollinators) and even attractive scents when walked upon.
3
1) THYME (THYMUS) 2) GREEN CARPET RUPTUREWORT (HERNIARIA GLABRA) 3) BLUESTAR CREEPER (ISOTOMA FLUVIATILLIS) 4) CORSICAN MINT (MENTHA REQUIENII)
4
5
5) JOHN CREECH STONECROP (SEDUM SPURIUM) 6) MICROCLOVER (TRIFOLIUM REPENS VAR. PIPOLINA) Micro clovers are a fairly new concept for homeowners but are a great idea if you are wanting a more ecological solution. These plants have much smaller leaves than the clover we are most familiar with. They have the added benefit of remaining green during drought and when combined in conventional grass seed mixes will actually help feed your existing grass without the need for additional fertilizers. Micro clovers have now been under trial use for several years and may be the answer for many gardeners who are losing the battle against the Chafer Beetle. Cedar Rim Nursery now carries a selection of Chafer resistant lawn seed, which incorporates microclover into the blend.

All you need to know about...
Citrus
If you are looking for a houseplant that’s both decorative and edible, look no further than CITRUS TREES. You may think this seems like an impossible feat, but following the tips and tricks listed below will help to ensure a successful houseplant.
LIGHT
Citrus plants need as much light as possible - optimum conditions being 8 to 12 hours a day and minimum being 6. You can move your citrus outside throughout the summer for higher light levels; just make sure you bring it back inside before it gets too cold in early fall. Plants that receive insufficient light will flower and fruit less profusely and the fruit will be less sweet. In general, the larger and sweeter the fruit the more light that is needed to ripen it properly.
WATER
Water well until the liquid runs out the bottom. Do not water again until the top 1/3 to 1/2 of the pot feels dry. Citrus should be moist but NEVER soggy and should never be left standing in water. In winter, water just enough to keep the soil from drying out completely.
FERTILIZING
Citrus are heavy nitrogen feeders so make sure the fertilizer you use for the spring and summer growing season are higher in nitrogen than phosphorus or potassium (nitrogen is the first number in your fertilizer).
TEMPERATURE AND HUMIDITY
Citrus grow best between 15°C and 30°C. Even though most citrus species will tolerate cooler temperatures, they won’t tolerate temperatures at or below freezing. Citrus go into dormancy at temperatures below 15°C.
DEFOLIATION
OUR TOP VARIETIES OF 2019: 1. MEYER LEMON - A CROSS BETWEEN A LEMON AND A MANDARIN ORANGE, MAKING IT SWEETER AND LESS ACIDIC THAN OTHER LEMONS. 2. KEY LIME - THINNER SKINNED AND SMALLER THAN OTHER LIMES, TART IN FLAVOUR. 3. CALAMONDIN SOUR ORANGE - A CROSS BETWEEN A TANGERINE AND A KUMQUAT. FRUIT IS A SIMILAR SIZE TO LIMES AND GOOD IN MARMALADES AND BAKED DISHES. 4. COCKTAIL TREE - 2 TO 6 DIFFERENT CITRUS IN ONE PLANT, DEPENDING ON THE POT SIZE.
Plants tend to defoliate under the following conditions: • Going from higher light to lower light (i.e. Going from outdoors to indoors.) • Going from warmer temperatures to cooler temperatures (i.e. Going from indoors to outdoors.) If your tree is receiving enough light, it might be that it’s getting too much or too little water. If there is life in the branch, leaves will probably come back (Do some light pruning and improve the conditions). To help the transition from outdoors to indoors, place the plants in shade for a few weeks before bringing them in.
PRUNING
Pruning is fine at any time except winter. Pinching back tips of new growth is the best way to round out the trees without affecting future fruit. Citrus will look fuller with occasional pruning to shape leggy branches. If you see very leggy branches, this is an indication that the plant needs more light.

CRANK UP THE HEAT! G
rowing your own chilli peppers is surprisingly easy and you will be impressed with the fruits of your labour. Some of the peppers we have at the nursery are not for the faint of heart and we have listed them according to their hotness. If you aren’t a fan of the heat we have varieties for every palate with some being mild and fruity. Our hot summers are perfect for trying your hand at growing peppers and you don’t need a greenhouse, just a sunny spot once the warm weather finally arrives. You can easily grow them in the ground or in pots on your patio. Watering regularly is very important to ensure you get the biggest crop, especially during hotter spells and feed every two weeks. Start feeding once the first flowers appear and keep on doing so until fruit have been harvested.
CAROLINA REAPER
HABANERO ROJAO
This legendary variety is one of the world’s hottest peppers coming in at a staggering, eyebrow singeing 2,200,000 Scoville units. They are wrinkly and have a scorpion like tail. As you first taste these bright red peppers, you get a fruity sweet chilli flavour that is quite tasty. The heat kicks in after 30-40 seconds and can linger for up to 30 minutes. Carolina Reapers can be harvested when they are green in colour. If you’re looking for that full bodied flavour and a more intense heat, then it is better to wait until they reach the red colour stage. Use a sharp knife or pruning shears to snip off peppers leaving a short stem attached. Always wear latex/nitrile gloves when handling these peppers and avoid contact with the face and eyes. Keep out of reach of children and pets.
This pepper is also know as the Red Habanero pepper and originates from Mexico. This oval shaped pepper is one of the most intensely spicy species of the chilli peppers. It can grow to 3 feet (90cm) tall in perfect conditions. The plant is multistemmed with 1” (2.5cm) wide by 2” (4cm) long wrinkled fruit. Unripe habaneros are lime green, but turn glossy dark red as it ripens. They can be easily grown in containers. Overly moist soil or roots produce bitter peppers. Habanero Rojo is twice as hot as the standard Habanero and is at its hottest when fully ripe. As a precaution, wear gloves when harvesting and preparing the pepper.
SHISHITO PEPPERS
These peppers have long been popular in Japan and now have gained much notoriety in the local food scene. The This pepper is the perfect birds-eye chilli for Thai and Vietnamese compact and bushy plants are well-branched and have very cuisine. Each plant is loaded with slender tapered peppers that high yields. The 3-4 inch (10cm) long fruits start off glossy lime are extremely flavourful and spicy! The green and red peppers green and will mature to a red colour. Typically, they are mild add an ornamental appeal to these container-friendly plants. tasting, but about 1 in 12 peppers may be spicy or pungent. Connoisseurs play a game of pepper roulette. This marvel is one of the unique characteristics of Shishito peppers. Some fruit tend be spicy if they are harvested larger and more mature or if they are grown in changing climatic conditions, likely stressed conditions, such as hot and dry.

The Scoville scale measures the pungency of peppers based on the concentration of capsaicinoids in the pepper. The higher the Scoville number, the spicier the pepper.

EASY CHOICES FOR FIRST TIME VEGGIE GARDENERS
irst time gardening can be overwhelming, but by following these few easy steps, you can guarantee you’re making good use of your plot or container.
PLAN YOUR GARDEN LAYOUT Doing this will ensure your crops have plenty of room to grow. Make sure the space you choose is large enough for the vegetables you enjoy. Overcrowding can cause stress for your crops and a garden too large can become a burden to you.
SUNLIGHT Make sure to choose a space in your yard that has a lot of bright light. A lack of sunlight may cause the crops to struggle and they may produce significantly less.
SOIL AND FERTILIZER It is important to choose the correct soil and fertilizer for optimum growth. We recommend using Black Gold Garden Compost Blend and Home & Garden Excellence ‘Garden Vegetable Food’.
PLANT WHAT YOU ACTUALLY EAT It’s always best to choose vegetables and herbs that you enjoy eating and cooking with to get the most out of your garden space.
PLANTING Follow planting instructions on labels and packages; most starters and seeds will vary on when and how they are planted.
WATER Water generously throughout the summer months as soil dries very quickly with warmer weather. Water the soil thoroughly, a light sprinkle on the plants can cause more harm than good.
WEED CONTROL Keep an eye on pesky weeds as they can often crowd and interfere with the growth of your vegetables and herbs.

Increase Your Homes Curb Appeal IN ONE AFTERNOON
You only get one chance to make a first impression, and the same goes for your home. Whether you are planning on putting your house on the market, or simply wanting to freshen up the look of your space, there are various easy ways to ensure that your house looks its best from the curb. Many of these projects can even be tackled in a single afternoon!
THE ENTRYWAY: Guests and
prospective buyers want to be welcomed by a home. The entryway into a home or townhouse should be tidy, clean, and in good repair. This shows your visitors that you take pride in your home’s appearance. A new welcome mat, a cluster of potted plants filled with lush annuals, and a freshly painted mailbox ensures that your home is putting its best foot forward. Tip: Match your potting containers to your mailbox for a cohesive and on-trend look!
THE GARDEN BEDS:
A bright and happy garden bed can enhance the beauty of your home, as well as show the care that goes into your space. If a homeowner will take the time to tend to plants, it shows prospective buyers that the same care was taken INSIDE of the home. A quick way to freshen up beds is to edge the borders of the garden and spread mulch over the soil. This quickly “smartens up” the look of any garden bed. Live in a townhouse? Adding containers full of brightly coloured annuals instantly warms up the entrance to your unit. To quickly add height and interest in a garden bed, don’t overlook the use of tall containers and hanging basket hooks within the bed itself. This will draw the eye up and make beds look fuller and brighter. Tip: No time for planting? Purchase pre-made hanging baskets at Cedar Rim Nursery and repot them in your own containers. These flowers have already been chosen with colour and size in mind, and will instantly transform your garden.
THE LAWN: Many homeowners struggle with maintaining a healthy lawn throughout the spring and summer months. A patchy lawn spotted with weeds can draw eyes away from your home’s appearance. An application of a slow-release lawn fertilizer every 6-8 weeks (up until the hotter, drier weather in July) will ensure that your grass is green and lush. You will see a deeper green in your lawn in only a few days after application! Use a weed puller to yank up pesky weeds from the roots in order to avoid an infestation in your lawn. Don’t stress too much about clover, however, as this seed has been introduced to many blends being extremely drought tolerant and stay green well into the summer.
