Dear students, Greetings and welcome back! We are pleased that you are joining us, either as a returning student or a new student. After a long and refreshing summer vacation, we now look forward to the new academic year. This “double cohort” year signifies a new era of university education in Hong Kong. With the implementation of the new curriculum focusing on the totality of students’ learning experience, students are expected not only to pursue academic success but also to become inquisitive learners, inter-cultural communicators, and community advocates who are willing to contribute to the betterment of society. CEDARS-Counselling and Person Enrichment (CoPE) is committed to supporting your total learning experience and preparing you to be the “ideal HKU student” by offering a wide range of co-curriculum programmes. For new students, the First Year Seminars and Pathfinding: Exhibition on Learning Opportunities at HKU (p.5) are something you can’t miss. You will get useful tips on how to live a well-balanced and successful university life from caring staff and senior students. You are highly recommended to take the quick assessments on the Psychometer(web-based psychological profile, psyax.cedars.hku.hk), to know more about your character strengths and how well you adjust to the life at HKU so that you can better plan for your study and social life at HKU. We conduct Person Enrichment Workshops that suit the needs of both new and returning students. The “Love of Learning” series will help you develop solid study skills and learning attitudes for your university education. The workshops in the areas of “Courage and Confidence” and “Social Intelligence” as well as the Peer English/Cantonese Tutoring Programme (p.5) will help you to be an effective inter-cultural communicator. You may also consider joining the peer support programmes and social inclusion learning projects (p.5-7) which are a platform for you to be involved in advocacy work for HKU students with special needs or under-privileged groups in society. A good start is half way to success. I hope that all of you will grasp these opportunities for self-enhancement and make your university life a memorable experience! This booklet contains details of the co-curriculum activities mentioned above. I am sure it is worth your time to go through it.

Dr Eugenie Leung Director of Counselling and Person Enrichment CEDARS – Counselling and Person Enrichment 3

Effective Listening Listening is an essential communication skill. Do you listen attentively, unassumingly and adequately or are you are just “hearing” without “listening”? People generally prefer to talk than to listen because we want to share our views and express our feelings. We all want to be heard, understood and appreciated. However, effective communicators usually tell you that listening is more important than speaking. If you want to be a good listener, you have to cultivate the right attitude and acquire effective listening skills. You have to get into a habit of being fully attentive, which is usually easier said than done. By being a good listener, you will realise that you will be a better student, friend, son/daughter and employee. Learning Outcomes At the end of the workshop, you will have: • Identified your communication barriers • Acquired effective listening skills • Practised questioning and reflecting skillsorries Date: 16 October 2012 (Tuesday) Time: 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm Venue: Room 411, Meng Wah Complex Trainer: Mrs Yoki Tyler, Counsellor, CEDARS Language: Cantonese Class size: Minimum 12 / Maximum 18 Fee: $20 Remarks: • You are also encouraged to take “Empathetic Responding” (p.25) as well. • Please note that this workshop is not intended for counselling skills drilling. Priorities will be given to non-social work/counselling students.

24

Code: ER1/12-13

Empathetic Responding A good listener usually does respond, so that the speaker feels that he/ she is being understood. This responding involves empathy, which is not just a skill but also an attitude (a genuine concern). It is even more complex than listening. Empathy means putting yourself into the other person’s shoes, understanding the other person so well that you can identify with him/her and feel how he/she feels in his/her situation. When people are upset, it is usually better to work through the feelings, before solving the problems. Want to be a better friend? Want to be more equipped in what to do when your friends share their concerns with you next time? This is a workshop that you don’t want to miss! Learning Outcomes At the end of the workshop, you will have: • Understood the concept of empathy • Learned to accurately identify the speaker’s feelings • Acquired basic skills in empathetic responding Date: 19 November 2012 (Monday) Time: 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm Venue: Room 411, Meng Wah Complex Trainer: Mrs Yoki Tyler, Counsellor, CEDARS Language: Cantonese Class size: Minimum 12 / Maximum 18 Fee: $20 Remarks: • You are also encouraged to take “Effective Listening” (p.24) as well. • Please note that this workshop is not intended for counselling skills drilling. Relationship Wars - Why do we argue so much? Can we stop hurting each other? Love can happen between two people and can transcend the limits of gender, race and culture. However, romance is more than exchanging love messages. It also involves a lot of negotiation and boundary setting. Conflicts arise when both parties cannot see eye to eye or fail to understand each other. Some see arguments as an opportunity to communicate with each other. Some see arguments as a sign that eventually leads to a breakup. Either way, relationship wars are on.
