Who REALLY brings you the Feast of Lanterns?
acific Grove Feast of Lanterns, Inc. is a non profit 501(c)(3) organization with an all volunteer Board of Directors. It has two goals. 1) Provide scholarships for the current year’s court and (2) Organize the event to keep Pacific Grove’s heritage alive and continue this long time Pacific Grove tradition. Along the way it also brings friends and families together in fellowship and benefits our local businesses which, in turn, benefits the city coffers which, in turn, benefits our residents. Each year it is a struggle for the organization to bring in the funds to make the event happen. We always hope we can meet the scholarships and expenses and have a little bit left for the start-up costs for next year. This year 10 people began meeting in January to plan this year’s celebration. These 10 people have more than 100 years of service to the organizing of the event. These are the people who are getting permission from NOAA for fireworks, making arrangements for opening and closing ceremonies, Feast of Dancing, choosing the royal court (with community judges), booking the entertainment, casting the pageant, editing the tabloid, planning the children’s games, contacting sponsors, preparing the costumes, managing the donations as they come in, etc, etc. These are the main “worker bees” in this very large project. Now to the “make it happen” group. When this group of 10 has plans in place, many other entities come into play. Hundreds of residents donate money and their precious volunteer time, the business community helps with financial and in kind support and the city asks employees from public works, recreation department and our police and fire departments to assist in their areas of expertise. All of this comes together to give our community a fun (and mostly free) week. Bottom Line: It takes Pacific Grove (and some wonderful other local friends) to get the job done. Volunteers (from lantern bearers to big bands) and volunteers (from beach cleaner-uppers to 15 member dance troupes) and more volunteers. Thank you to all of you for your unbelievable support. Lighting the Way 2013 Theme for the Feast of Lanterns By Kaye Coleman
The annual pageant of the Feast of Lanterns reenacts the timeless tale of forbidden love and the power of life’s journey. Now in its 108th year, our hometown celebration was borne out of the Chautauqua Movement in the United States and remains very important to the historical fabric of this unique area of California. Pacific Grove’s founding was connected to the Chautauqua Assembly, whose members felt art and culture should be celebrated through public performances. As the Feast
of Lanterns Board of Directors introduces the 2013 theme of “Lighting the Way,” we seek to set a course for the event uniting our community in the celebration of our history and connection to each other. Light throughout time has been a symbol of enlightenment. “Lighting the Way” refers to the symbolic act of shining light to illuminate that which connects us. Perhaps this subtle undertone in our lantern festival is one of the many reasons this story has made a lasting
impression on our quaint little town. The pageant script is based on the myth represented in Blue Willow China which was adapted to include the lovers turning into monarch butterflies. In the story, the Mandarin sees golden lights dance in his daughter’s eyes which cause him to crown Koong-se as Queen Topaz. Later, he is distraught after Koong-se runs away with her lover, Chang. The Mandarin proclaims that everyone will carry lighted lanterns to “Light the Way” so he can find his daughter. This part of the story shows that light leads us to love, and that love transforms us. Quan Yin, Goddess of Compassionate Love in Chinese culture, is so moved by
Chang and Koong-se’s love that she transforms them into monarch butterflies. Her act of transforming the lovers into monarchs is the transition of the soul taking flight, as butterflies are a universal symbol of the soul. The Mandarin, Queen Topaz, and her love Chang are all transformed through the process of seeking love. It is often true that the next generation lights the world by creating solutions that were not in the awareness of previous generations. The Feast of Lanterns is living history. Lighting the way is the path that the young ladies of the Royal Court walk each summer

Former Royalty of the Feast of Lanterns - Lighting the Way! By Kaye Coleman, Queen Topaz 1993
This year marks the 55th anniversary of the Royal Court, which was formally established by the late Elmarie Hurlbert Hyler Dyke in 1958. In honor of this anniversary, and also of the theme for this year’s event, the Board of Directors felt it would be fitting to share some of the enlightening achievements of an influential member of former Royalty. Many amazing young women serve on the Royal Court as either a Princess or Queen Topaz. It takes a special young woman, who is well rounded and confident, to stand up and speak to her community. One of these special women is former Queen Topaz 1994, Lena Hakim Requist. She served on the Royal Court as Princess Amethyst 1991, Princess Jade 1992, Princess Pearl 1993, and Queen Topaz 1994. She was fortunate to have a long career serving on the court before stepping into the leadership role of Queen Topaz. During her reign as Queen she started a tradition that remains with the event today. Lena was the first Queen to introduce the myth of the Feast of Lanterns on visual storyboards. It was her idea to not just tell the story of Koong-se and Chang’s love verbally, but to further engage the audience by displaying a series of images. This method has been used every year since and is celebrating its 19th year! Every young woman who serves as Queen Topaz seeks to make her mark on the event. Lena is one of those Queens who not only made her mark, but implemented a novel approach to make the story more engaging. Yet, this was only the beginning of her creative ideas. Lena Hakim Requist has been a powerhouse in the world of Corporate America for most of her adult life. In early 2013, Lena was honored by the American Business Association with a very prestigious award in her field, the Stevie - Female Executive of the Year Award. She won the award because of a three-class training program (titled Drivers Ed) that she created for her employees, which teaches them how to excel in time management, while allowing them to spend 50% of their work hours on creative projects that expand the company. This means that Lena Hakim Requist has engaged everyone in her company, from the receptionist to the CEO, to use their work hours efficiently. Everyone in the company spends 50% of their hours on regular work duties and 50% on brainstorming, creating, and implementing innovative ideas that move the company forward. This has positively impacted Ontraport, the company that Lena helps run, resulting in a 5,000% growth in the last 2 years! The company has won several other awards including: One of the Most Promising Companies in America according to Forbes Magazine; Tenth Fastest Growing Software Company in America; and finally, One of the 50 Most Engaged Work Forces in America, by Achievers. Lena is most proud of the award from Achievers because they study and survey employee satisfaction. This award shows that everyone in the company is fully engaged and satisfied in their work. What did Lena do differently that made it possible for her to make such a huge impact on her company, and also on the world of Corporate America? During her interview for this article, Lena shared her understanding of how the corporate model has traditionally worked versus how it could work better. For years the traditional corporate model has viewed workers as commodities. Only people at the very top of the corporate pyramid had the power and time to create solutions and offer ideas to shape a company. In Lena’s opinion, this view overlooked a huge asset, the power of human creativity. By understanding that every person has creative potential that is untapped, she conceived a new approach to training that honors the innate talents possessed by everyone in her company. In this way, she is lighting the way and showing how valuing human potential can actually create growth and innovation. This philosophy has empowered the staff of Ontraport to create mind-blowing success. Lena’s humbleness was evident as she explained that her individual award for the Stevie was not as important as the collective award that was won through employee satisfaction. In addition to her corporate success, Lena Hakim Requist is sharing her philosophy and training methods at business conventions throughout the country. She has also created a “Women in Business Group” in which she mentors other female entrepreneurs to lead in innovative ways. Like Koong-se in the myth, Lena surely has golden lights in her eyes, and her vision breaks new ground in a system that impacts the very fabric of America and the world. She is a bright shining example of what this year’s theme represents. Lena Hakim Requist is “Lighting the Way” in her field for the power of human potential and creativity.

inhee Cho is returning for her second year on the Royal Court as Princess Turquoise for this year’s Feast of Lanterns. She will be a sophomore at Pacific Grove High School, striving to achieve high academic standards, like her 4.0 GPA, as part of the honors program. Minhee is involved in a variety of different extra-curricular activities including Model United Nations, Mock Trial and acting in school plays. Music is her passion. Not only is she part of the PGHS Breaker Band, she loves singing various types of music. As a member of a traditional Korean percussion band, she has played at events including the Asian Culture Day at Salinas’ Steinbeck Library and Language Day at the Defense Language Institute. Minhee attends weekend Korean school to learn about her culture. Attending church weekly, she works on service projects to help others in the area. Minhee is always willing to lend a hand. Minhee enjoys spending time with her friends and family. She is grateful for her parents, Dukhyun and Meesun Cho and her two older sisters, Sonhee and Jeehee. Minhee is “lighting the way” by showing others that if you take time to go and explore new things, you will find joy in doing them. She is a senior at Trinity Christian High School, on the Dean’s List Special Recognition for a 4.3 GPA! Ashley is Treasurer for Student Government and acted in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and Guys and Dolls. Extra-curricular activities also include ballet, photography, the swim team, and the Stand-Up Paddle Board Team. Ashley is a member of both the Salinas Valley and the Pebble Beach Junior Golf Associations, where she competes in monthly tournaments and attends clinics. On Trinity’s mission trips to the San Francisco Tenderloin District, Prague (Czech Republic) and New Orleans, Ashley has shared her faith and served her community. She volunteers with the Calvary Monterey Tech Team, helps her dad teach the Children’s Ministry and is a golf coach at the First Tee of Monterey County. Ashley lives with her parents, Glen and Lourdes Yukihiro, and younger sister, Hayley. Louie and Lulu, her older half siblings, live on their own. When asked which event she enjoys the most, Ashley cannot decide. She loves the pageant AND the Feast of Flavors! Ashley will be “lighting the way” by being a positive role model to little princesses-in-training and remind them to “DREAM BIG! Because…who knows what might happen?!”

ueen Topaz 2013 is Courtney Lyon. This is her fourth year serving on the Royal Court, previously representing the Feast of Lanterns as Princess Turquoise, Princess Ruby, and Princess Pearl. Her parents are Linda and Bob Lyon and her younger sister is Ashley. She will be a senior at Pacific Grove High School in the Fall. Courtney was elected to serve as the Senior Class Secretary for the class of 2014. She is also currently the Secretary of the PGHS Natural High Club. Courtney will be a four-year member of the PGHS Varsity Cheer Team as well. In her free time, Courtney is an avid photographer who enjoys exploring the natural beauty of Monterey County. Her community service includes tutoring middle school students who have fallen behind in their class work as well as working with the Sunday School program at her church. Courtney’s favorite part about being involved with the Feast of Lanterns is being able to interact with the community members of Pacific Grove and seeing children’s faces light up when the Royal Court enters the room. Courtney plans on “lighting the way” for Pacific Grove by acting as a positive role model for the younger members of the community, showing them that it is important to be confident with who they are and to embrace their true selves and their unique personalities.

Many years ago, in far off Cathay, a land now called China, there lived during the reign of Emperors, a wealthy Mandarin named T’so Ling. His land holdings were vast and fertile and his treasures beyond counting. His palace was built of fine woods and rich lacquers, with a roof of blue tile that gleamed in the sun and a handmade fence that ran below the palace. Behind the palace grew an orange tree, and beside the palace ran a wide river, with a graceful willow that gave shade in the heat of the day. Of all T’so Ling’s possessions, his beautiful Princess daughters with their jewel names, were his greatest joy. The mandarin delighted most in his eldest daughter,

Koong-se, who he named Topaz, so named for the golden lights that twinkled from her eyes. Topaz passed her days in a summer house that leaned over the rippling water, where she did embroidery on silk, while listening to tales of Old Cathay, told by her faithful nurse, Chun Soy. T’so Ling thought Topaz so lovely that he wished to crown her as Queen Topaz. A coronation ceremony was planned, and all the princes, potentates, maharajahs and lords of realms were invited to attend the coronation. One of the older Mandarins brought a chest of gold so impressive that T’so Ling thought this rich man would make a fine husband for his daughter Topaz. T’so Ling made plans to combine the

eventh generation on her mom’s side and fourth generation on her dad’s side, Pacific Grove native, Caroline Gruber, is Princess Ruby 2013. The fact that Caroline is one of the top ten academic students in her freshman class is no surprise, as she was the 2012 Science Student of the Year. She has played Pacific Grove Pony Softball for 5 years and represented PG at the Junior Olympics. She is on the 2012-2013 Cheer Team and the JV Softball Team, where she is now the starting catcher. Besides sports, she also plays the clarinet. Hobbies and interests include the Natural High Club, volleyball and US History. Caroline has volunteered at Forest Grove Elementary School, the Varsity scoreboard, and to be a Lantern Bearer during the pageant for the Feast of Lanterns. Her favorite part of the Feast of Lanterns is that she enjoys being a part of Pacific Grove’s history (for the second time) and keeping the tradition alive...“although, nothing can compare to the feeling of seeing the entire town gather on one little beach for one night.” Caroline’s parents are Christine and Bob Gruber and her younger sister is Catherine. How Caroline will “light the way” is to show younger children that they should always do what they love, whether it is playing softball, acting, building model rockets or photography. “Just be yourself (no matter what anyone else thinks)!”

Topaz became so despondent when T’so Ling forbade her to marry Chang, she wandered off into the dark to drown herself. T’so Ling alerted the villagers to search for Topaz with lighted boats and lanterns. During the search, Topaz and her lover were reunited. In a final burst of lights, Topaz and Chang were illuminated as they changed into Monarch butterflies and escaped into the sky, to live happily forever in love.

ayley Yukihiro, a current freshman at Trinity Christian High School, is serving her first year on the Royal Court as Princess Amethyst 2013. Along with being the Freshman Representative of her class in Student Government, Hayley participates in school sports, both track and golf. Next year, she wants to compete in the Nature Valley First Tee Open at Pebble Beach. Her future goals include a professional career as an orthopedic surgeon. Inspired by her faith, Hayley helps other people through the children’s ministry and missions with the Calvary Chapel Monterey Bay. Her Saturday mornings are spent practicing Japanese culture and language, where she won the Calligraphy Contest Award for having the best writing in class! Hayley volunteers for the Big Sur Marathon and as a Junior Counselor for church camp. Her favorite hobbies include reading adventure novels, writing, gymnastics and ballet. She lives in a family of four with her parents, Glenn and Lourdes Yukihiro, and her older sister, Ashley. Her two older half-siblings, Lourdes and Louie, currently live independently. Hayley is “lighting the way” as a role model for shy, silent girls (like herself ) to have courage and go out into the community and serve other people without being scared or intimidated. Hayley is excited to be part of the pageant and Pacific Grove history!
Many examples of “Lighting the Way” exist in this version. The mandarin recognizes how special Topaz is, represented by the lights in her eyes, and wanting to crown her Queen. The mandarin commands the villagers to light the lanterns in an attempt to find his beloved daughter. Topaz and Chang illuminate the sky as they transform into the Monarch Butterflies.

Dogs, Cats, Birds, Bikes and the Youth of Pacific Grove... By: Joni Birch Donald Mothershead is calm, cool and collected before the onslaught of excitement for the Feast of Lanterns Pet Parade. He is about to be overrun by dogs, cats, birds, bikes, turtles, scooters and the youth of Pacific Grove as generations of families line Lighthouse Avenue in anticipation of nearly every child’s favorite event. We are so comfortable with him as a staple of Pacific Grove, that it seems hard to imagine a time before Don ran this part of the Feast…but there was. Let’s go back to the beginning. Don was only four years old, and very lucky, when his parents decided to retire here in Pacific Grove. He remembers seeing the pageantry of the Feast of Lanterns, as a five year old, from the raft that floated directly in front of the pier. “There was a gang plank and they let us kids watch the pageant with a front row seat! The Feast of Lanterns is amazing…and a little corny. It’s great! It’s small town PG and those little fireworks sure do a great job!”
Earl and Olga Mothershead, Don’s parents, ran the Lovers Point Concession Stand (then called the PG Beach Stand) until 1981. During those 23 years, Don grew up and helped out, especially for the Feast of Lanterns, “the biggest night in the world! Mom was a devoted fan of Elmarie’s half hour radio program on Saturdays and Sundays.” Local teenagers worked alongside the Mothershead family selling all-American fare such as popcorn, soft serve ice cream and snow cones (root beer, cherry and lime). “Mom was famous for her simple, but tasty burgers. And, Dad, retired Army Major, was smart as heck and knew everything about the numbers.” When Don wasn’t helping out the folks, he was at the beach. The glass bottom boats were a tourist attraction and irresistible to Don. As a boat hand, he was hanging out there by 6 am…helping rent boats, fixing bait, and explaining the local wildlife to anyone who would listen. “Back in those days, sea otters were nearly extinct. Abalone eat kelp and there were not enough otters to eat the abalone. There was almost no kelp and you could see clear to the bottom!” Don was such a great guide that people often asked if he was going to be a biologist. His schooling, however, followed a different path. Don attended the old Lighthouse Elementary School, Pacific Grove Junior High and graduated with the 1971 class of Pacific Grove High. Mothershead was a four-year letterman in track, captain of the football and track teams. He played college football at MPC and Cal Poly. When he transferred to Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo, he graduated with a degree in physical education. He taught with the Pacific Grove Unified School District for four years after earning his teaching credential in 1977.
Joining the Recreation Department was a perfect fit for Don and Pacific Grove. He helped develop the Youth Soccer and Basketball Leagues along with inheriting the duties for the Feast of Lanterns. The torch (or lantern) passed from Ruby Nodilo (Assistant Recreation Director, Founder of the Pet Parade) to Don (the new Assistant Recreation Director). “I used John Miller’s cheat sheets about the Pet Parade…you have to separate the dogs from the cats…everything has its’ own section…the bikes, the birds... The Fun Swim Meet and Fun Track Meet were already in place.” Don’s role changed from spectator of the Feast to one who was Lighting the Way. After more than 20 years of swim meets, pet parades and track meets, Don and Rosemarie (married with 3 children) watched their son, John Mothershead, fill the role of Chang in 2003. Queen Topaz, Alexandra Stampher, and her Royal Court made John a special crown for the Pet Parade. He was crowned “King Topaz” and took it all in stride with a great sense of humor. John was also the first Chang to have a trading card. As a day camp counselor, for Adventure Day Camp, John directed the youth of Pacific Grove. The children acted out their own version of the legend of the blue willow at Chautauqua Hall every summer for several years to follow. John is an aspiring author and had this to say… “It seems like lifetimes ago. But, I will definitely never forget the magic that the Feast of Lanterns brought into my childhood and how much the hometown spirit of Pacific Grove inspires me today. You can even see a nod to Topaz and Chang in my upcoming Children’s Book (pictured as two Monarch butterflies).” Clearly, Don was an inspiration and role model to his son. He and Rosemarie are very proud to have the privilege to serve Pacific Grove, Butterfly Town, USA. They have spent decades supporting the “village” that helped raise both of them and their three children. Perhaps their grandchildren would like to be lantern bearers during the pageant (a little plug for future Feast involvement). Through a tough economy, down-sizing (a 70 percent budget cut) and the like, Don is still running the recreation programs and handling facility rentals for weddings, memorial services, birthdays and other events. His duties expanded to support the operations at City Hall. The Chamber of Commerce honored Don Mothershead as the City Employee of the Year, an award much deserved for his unending service to our town. And, the work that he did to “Be a Lifesaver and Save the Lovers Point Children’s Pool” is apparent every time a child’s laughter fills the air on a sunny day. Luckily for Pacific Grove and the Feast of Lanterns, we can still see Don organizing and walking in the Pet Parade. Don makes sure we can see our way out after a fun-filled day at the beach and watching the pageantry on the pier. He is an icon, an integral piece in the undertaking of the Feast. Thank you, Don, for “Lighting the Way”, for carrying the torch for Pacific Grove, in helping our town remain one of the most amazing communities on Earth. Listen carefully when attending the week’s events. Don is always the one wishing everyone “Happy Feast of Lanterns!” It is only fitting to return the sentiment. Please make sure to wish Don and his family “Happy Feast of Lanterns” for lighting the way!

“Lanterns Light the Way” was the theme for the 1961 Feast of Lanterns and Marabee must have taken it to heart. Let’s explore her journey of volunteering and love of community from the beginning…. Dyke’s Pharmacy was on the corner. Councilman Clyde Dyke was asked by Mayor Frank Shropshire to chair the revival of the Feast of Lanterns in 1958. Mr. and Mrs. Dyke (as Marabee knew them) were always in costume and excited about the Feast of Lanterns. Until his death, they worked as an unstoppable team. Mrs Dyke then committed to the monumental task of running and organizing the Feast of Lanterns until her death in 1981. “She became the Matriarch. She was an inspiration! She was very outspoken and had the most amazing way of getting things done!” When Mrs. Dyke asked you to volunteer for your community, it was an honor! She rallied hundreds, sometimes upwards to 1000 volunteers to help put on the Feast. “I started as her go-for, and I say that lovingly. And just for the record, Mrs. Dyke never heard me call her Elmarie.” Marabee stuffed envelopes, licked stamps and watched Elmarie work from the very beginning. In those days, Elmarie hand-picked the young women

for the Royal Court. In 1961, the contestants in the Miss Monterey County Pageant became the Royal Court. The Feast of Lanterns was tied to beauty pageants and Mrs. Dyke worked with all the young women on their poise, etiquette and their role as an ambassador. Marabee Rush was a contestant in 1961 and she wore the beautiful blue-green silk costume of Princess Turquoise.
During the last 55 years, Marabee has probably done every job you can do for the Feast of Lanterns. One of the biggest hats she wears is that of Director. “Because of my theater experience (50+ years being attached at the hip to The Troupers of the Gold Coast), I was asked to direct the pageant many years ago (1981 I believe). The script we use today is the script that Clay Freeman wrote for Mrs. Dyke way back when. We know it is not Broadway, but being able to hear
their reactions from the pier, I’m certain the audience enjoys it. And probably, most of them could recite it by now.” The spirit of Elmarie lives in the pageant. Mrs. Dyke integrated much of what we still

Marabee has directed the pageant from 1981 to today, except 1986 (the year the Feast was cancelled) and 2010 (the year the Feast was not at the beach). Sometimes, you don’t know what your day is going to hold with the Feast. “I had gone home to iron costumes for the pageant that evening. Before I had left the stage crew, I had helped put up the set. It was attached with wire and stuff to the railings on the pier. As I drove back down to Lovers Point, something was a little off. I was looking at the pier and realized the set was gone! It was on the rocks below and we had to start over.” It was not funny then, but Marabee tells that story with laughter and a twinkle in her eyes now.
Probably her most favorite job is driving the Royal Court to their events. “It is a very fun thing to do! You get to see another facet of the girls. The 2008 Royal Court was a great example. Many of them enjoyed singing and they sang in the van everywhere we went. That’s what makes it worthwhile!” Marabee talks a lot about why the Feast of Lanterns is important to the community of Pacific Grove. “It is great to see family, friends and neighbors get together for a reunion every last week in July. A big reason to stick with the Feast is the benefit we see to the young people in the community. We hear from the parents about what a difference it makes in the girls’ growth. You see shy, young girls who are afraid of public speaking learn to have confidence by the time they leave.” This year’s Royal Court is a perfect

example of the growth the girls experience by their participation on the court. Many of them were new to the court last year and we already see confidence and maturity growing in all of them. By the time a young woman becomes Queen she has gained the attributes it takes to be the leader of the Royal Court. As President of the Feast of Lanterns, Marabee feels strongly about 2 important changes. The first directly benefits the young women of Pacific Grove. It is the beginning of their personal transformation to the confident young women of the future. “Selection of the Royal Court has evolved from Mrs. Dyke
hand-picking the young women on the Royal Court to an interview panel made up of community volunteers.” The panel interview process is an imprortant opportunity to prepare the applicants for the future. “It is great to see the excitement in the young girls. Seventh graders look forward to the opportunity to get on the Royal Court.” It is often a first step in becoming professional leaders of tomorrow. The second important change is the formation of The Board of Directors. It is integral to the success of the Feast. Marabee is “pleased to have such a great board. The 10 people who form the board

Citizen of the Year is No Surprise to Anyone Who Knows Joe Shammas…
By: Joni Birch Every great story has a beginning, and Joe Shammas began his story with the Feast as a child. He remembers the Feast of Lanterns being a favorite, loving the beach, the glow of the lanterns and, of course, the pageant with the fireworks. It is a fond memory shared by most of Pacific Grove. A few decades later, when Debbie Yingling was Queen Topaz 1983, Marabee asked Joe if he wanted to help out with the pageant. He was a fellow Trouper of the Gold Coast and was comfortable being on stage. It was the first of many times that he would play the part of Ta-Jin, the spurned, wealthy mandarin in “Queen Topaz Escapes”. He loves listening to the crowd, seeing the
being Ta-Jin, that for a while they each played Ta-Jin on alternate years. It is always a fun place to be on pageant night. When it comes to the pageant, in the forefront of our communities mind is always the question “Are we going to have fireworks this year?” In 2010, the answer was no. That was a summer that was hard on the businesses of Pacific Grove and Joe Shammas got inspired to help his community out yet again. Joe is a model citizen, who has long served his community as a leader and behind the scenes. In 2011, he joined the Board of Directors for the Feast lighted lanterns and being a part of of Lanterns. He is known to most the excitement. Joe did have to go out people as “the Permit/Fireworks of town one year, and Dan Koffman guy”, but his most important role filled in. Dan had such a great time is that of Business Liaison. “It is important to have tradition. The Feast of Lanterns benefit all of us… the community, the girls on the Royal Court, and the businesses including, (but not limited to), restaurants and hotels… I am so impressed by how many residents love the Feast. It really means a lot! They plan their summer around it, including family reunions. They want to be here in Pacific Grove specifically for the Feast. It is a great event for the community.” In serving the Feast, Joe has come to realize how the Royal Court benefits
as well. “The growth of each Royal Court Member is amazing to watch, from the first outing to the end.” They get life long skills to go out and succeed in the world. It is an honor to be a part of their development. 2013 is a special year for both Joe Shammas and the city of Pacific Grove. The PG Chamber of Commerce honored Joe with the James R. Hughes Citizen of the Year Award. Joe’s community service has been an outgrowth of his work as a travel agent. PG Travel, his business of 33 years, gives him the opportunity to serve, “to treat clients like my friends and family and to help them. I’m so fortunate to be able to live and work in our beautiful community. I’m glad to lend a hand for its betterment.” Joe lives his life, inspired by his parents, his best friend and Sister Nancy and his loving family. The prayer of St. Francis which says It is in giving that we receive is truly the way that Joe lives his life. “I am fulfilled by giving my time and talent to PG.” Thank you, Joe, for bringing the entire community together. You clearly see the bonds that tie us together, business and individual alike. You are always Citizen of the Year in our eyes! It is an honor to serve with you!
