AWARDS YEARBOOK 2016
The CEDIA Awards is the home technology industry’s most prestigious awards scheme, celebrating technical excellence in design, installation and integration across the EMEA region (the UK, Europe, Russia and the CIS, Middle East, India, Pakistan and Africa). Established in 2006, the CEDIA Awards is classed as the Oscars of the home technology industry.
ABOUT THE AWARDS
HEADLINE SPONSORS
Every year, CEDIA members from across the EMEA region put their best projects forward. This year’s scheme saw over 200 submissions from more than 18 countries, all competing for the top prizes in 2016. The battle to win a prestigious CEDIA Awards accolade has never been tougher. Each installation category is judged by an expert panel drawn from the worlds of architecture, interiors, property, smart home journalism and, of course, home technology to ensure the highest standards of scrutiny for each and every entry. A first round of technical judging is complemented by a final rigorous assessment to determine the category winners. As well as the need to be integrated and beautifully concealed with the interior, important factors also considered include compliance with industry best practice, the imaginative and appropriate design and use of technology, impeccably designed and installed racks, value for money as well as that all important ‘wow’ factor. Throughout the judging process, the identity of member companies taking part in the CEDIA Awards scheme remains completely anonymous to preserve the integrity of the adjudication process.

In 2015, the CEDIA Awards Yearbook was recognised by the Trade Association Forum (TAF), as it was awarded ‘Publication of the Year’ at the TAF Awards. The CEDIA Awards is open only to CEDIA member companies. For more information on the CEDIA Awards, please visit www.cediaawards.org

Sound Sense
Sound Sense was tasked with converting a bright family room with an open floor plan into an entertaining space that can be used at any time of the day. The challenge was to enable three viewing points – the family room itself, the adjacent bar area and the outdoor pool area. With a budget of just £7,000, the installer had to balance quality and cost. The main challenge for Sound Sense was the room itself, as it features one and a half floor to ceiling glass walls. With the client requesting that the room can be used for viewing at any time of the day, the installer had to come up with a solution that meant the glass walls wouldn’t disrupt the viewing experience and sound. Sound Sense lined the glass walls with
heavy drapers to overcome this issue. The installer also adjusted the projector settings to the maximum foot lambert to achieve the desired lighting condition and provide clear viewing in broad daylight. Sound Sense installed a Liberty Grandview 110" fixed screen and Panasonic PTAR-100 projector. With in-ceiling speakers and other equipment hidden out of sight, the client was pleased with the discrete set-up. As an ISF and HAA certified consultant, Sound Sense was able to offer video and audio calibration to provide a unique viewing and listening experience.

Grahams The brief for Grahams was to create a media room that would provide the space to allow for watching films, television and playing games consoles. The room was to provide a high level of comfort, audio performance and a large screen. Grahams installed a 75” Samsung UHD TV, Arcam AVR and Triad speakers. The LCR speakers are cleverly built into a high level angled bulkhead which keeps them out of the way and angled to the seating area. Special attention was paid to the lighting design. When watching films, low level linear LED lighting is used on the steps and rear bulkhead. Central spots providing general illumination is available at the touch of a button. Control of the media room is via a Control4 system and SR-260 handheld remote, which is consistent with the control in the rest of the property.

The installer opted for a 55 Samsung screen, which was recessed on a pull out bracket. A 5.1 speaker set-up was achieved, with a Yamaha RX-A740 AV amplifier, two Monitor Audio CT265 in-ceiling rear speakers for the surrounds and three Monitor Audio WT250 rectangular in-wall speakers. A Velodyne Impact Mini subwoofer reinforces the bass and is neatly hidden within a joinery unit. To enable a film experience, TwentyTwo Integration installed a JVC DLAX500 projector and Screen Research in-ceiling projection screen. The screen is tensioned to ensure a truly flat image at all times, producing a fantastic display. A custom recessed housing was created within the ceiling coffer for the projector.

With the client having had experience with Control4, the installer used a Control4 7 wireless touchscreen. The client can control music, TV, movies, lighting, CCTV and door intercom from a single controller.

De Opera Domotica The client’s brief was for a multifunctional space that could be used to watch TV and films and act as a playroom for the grandchildren. The client requested a sophisticated home automation system that would not only control AV, but also the lighting, blinds, fireplace, underfloor heating and cooling. The installer opted for Wisdom Audio P48 speakers. Due to the low listening position, careful consideration was given to the position of each speaker. Additional KEF and Totem acoustic speakers were used alongside the Wisdom Audio speakers. An 11.2 configuration was achieved and delivers stunning sound that fills the whole room. A drop down ceiling projection screen and Epson projector was installed for watching films, while a Samsung 48” TV was specified for day to day TV viewing. The room is controlled via Crestron.

BNC Technology BNC Technology created a cosy, highend media room that encompasses the ultimate in quality, performance and design. The installer provided the complete solution, including a 5.1 surround sound system. A Screen Innovations acoustically transparent screen and a JVC projector that was motorised from the ceiling achieves a seamless look when the system is switched off. Three large windows proved to be a challenge in the space. BNC Technology chose to only close off one of these windows, leaving the other two open, but installed motorised curtains which shut out any light while the media room is being used. The curtains are controlled via a Control4 system. To house the racks, BNC Technology custom designed a tech-room off the media room, which allows for easy access should the client need to change DVDs, Blu-rays or gaming discs.

Finite Solutions The key requirements for this project were to create a room that was light and airy for TV watching during the day and early evening, but had the ability to black out completely for a movie when needed. As the media room was situated below bedrooms, sound proofing to a high level was required. Lastly, ease of use was vital and the simplest method of operating the media equipment, lights and curtains was high on the priority list. Finite Solutions addressed the sound proofing concern with acoustic wall panels, ceilings and doors, and extremely heavy drapes. The installer opted for a Sony VPLVW5000 projector with a Screen Excellence 4K projection screen. A high quality Oppo Blu-ray player delivers superb picture and sound quality while a Kaleidescape Stratos allows downloaded uncompressed 4K content to be displayed on the screen.

Finite Solutions Having just purchased a new build townhouse, the client contracted Finite Solutions to design and install his dream media room in the basement. The client had some very specific requirements – a large curved TV rather than a projection screen, a system that delivers impressive AV performance, yet is discreet and an easy to control system. Finite Solutions designed a 7.1 surround sound system. Due to space, the placement of the front speakers was challenging, so the installer mounted them on horizontal axis high on the wall and tilted them towards the seats. To ensure the audio performance was as isolated from the rest of the house as possible, Finite Solutions specified Maxi board for interior cladding. A Samsung 78" curved UHD Smart TV was specified. Lutron lighting control allows scenes to be created for different viewing scenarios and room uses.

The client wanted to turn a newly built basement into a family cinema room, but was sceptical about the quality of projectors. M.E.G.A. AV Installations Ltd was asked to create a simple and elegant design for the room, but without compromising video and sound quality. The 110” slim frame Screen Excellence projection screen was sunk into the wall so that it appears totally flush. Behind the screen, MDF back boxes for LCR speakers and two subwoofers sit on a baffle wall. A coffered ceiling with perimeter lighting was designed to keep as much height as possible. LED strips and downlighters are controlled with Rako lighting modules.
The projector used was a Panasonic 3D HD PT-AT6000 model. To avoid hearing the projector’s fan noise, it was placed in a custom designed cupboard with cut outs for the lens and ventilation visible. Off-the-shelf acoustic panels were used on the sidewalls. The depth of the panel was designed to give a high absorption of sound. The surround speakers were mounted on the ceiling and left exposed since the paint on the outer side of the ceiling blended in with it.

A baffle wall was designed for the THX speaker system, as well as a way to maximise seating capacity. Equipment was placed in a custom rack which can be accessed using a side door. After making calculations and surround speaker placement layouts were completed, it was decided that the home cinema would feature a 7.2 set-up. The Klipsch THX Ultra2 family loudspeaker delivers surround effects. The front LCR speakers highlight the raw power and fine detail that the filmmaker incorporated.

Clarke Infinity Limited The objective of Squirrels Oak was to convert a loft into the family’s dream cinema. Equipment was to be hidden from view, but the performance should not be hindered as a result. A sub frame on the front wall held the Bowers & Wilkins front speakers and subwoofers. The frame was covered with a stretch fabric to provide a clean look. The left and right speakers placed on both sides of the screen were also hidden by the Barrisol stretched fabric. As the room was going to be used as a cinema room, a Stewart 2900 perforated cinema screen was chosen since it was most suitable for the space. The clear and sharp images produced by a Sony 3D projector complements the screen. To prevent eye fatigue, two small floor wash LEDs and two Orluna 2900 Kelvin lights were installed.

Finite Solutions The tiny basement was transformed into a cinema room. The existing room had approximately 12m of floor space and was only 1.6m tall. Some work was required to make it safe and usable for young children, including the height being increased to 2m. The room was also acoustically treated on all walls and the ceiling which was hidden behind a stretched fabric. A combination of slender and shallow speakers is neatly concealed within a front wall build out. To make more space for the equipment rack and a small cooler in the under stairs cupboard, joists supporting the stairs were redesigned and spaced differently. A movie server and a control system were integrated to provide easy and convenient use.

H&H Audio Visual Ltd The client brief stated that the cinema design had to blend in with the fabric of the house. The home cinema was to be used during daytime and the evening, so window treatment was used. A Marantz SR7010 AV receiver provides 200W to each of the seven Artcoustic speakers. A Savant Pro system allows full integration between the AV system, Rako lighting and window treatment in the room. One of the key factors in selecting Savant Pro for the control system was the ability for the users to set their own scenes, including lightning pre-sets, AV pre-sets and window treatment. This allows the client to create Savant scenes ‘on-thefly’ and to manage all of these systems from a single button press. An Epson laser projector was paired with an acoustically transparent in-ceiling projection screen. Additionally, the design included a 55” UHD Samsung television.

The client requested a visually interesting, high quality and flexible home cinema. As a passionate lover of architecture, the client wanted this reflected in the room. Sphere Custom worked alongside the designer on the project, who briefed them on the final look for the cinema: a cutting edge contemporary design. To meet the design brief, Sphere Custom opted for 3D geometric wall panels. These panels were difficult to hang on the walls due to the lack of space, as well as being heavy. An additional benefit of having the geometrical shapes was that they acoustically treated the room. Six 12U racks were integrated at the front of the room. Custom cabinets were made
after all equipment was placed in racks. This was done so that the style of the interior could remain intact. After the cabinets were retrofitted, Sphere Custom devised the seating layout. To fit ten seats in a condensed space, three tiers of seating rows were constructed. Sphere Custom installed one of the first VW500es projectors in South Africa. It also features one of the first immersive audio loudspeaker layouts in the country. The installer designed the room to accommodate a 15.1 loudspeaker set-up with dual subwoofers and a pair of in-ceiling speakers, which act as a single Voice-of-God speaker in the Auro-3D array. It has been futureproofed to handle Dolby Atmos configurations once the processor supports the format.

DCI compatibility could not be achieved within the budget, however the cinema can be upgraded in future. The entire system went through a few days of audio calibration for the best possible room acoustics. Since DCI could not be achieved, the client was given an alternative server which allowed them to play first run “regional language” films. To cater to the depth of the room, JBL Synthesis SAM1HF and SAM2LF speakers were chosen. The 7.1 system included six subwoofers, three main speakers, and six surround speakers. Touch panels control the main functions, while the less frequently used functions are accessed through the client’s smartphones and tablets to maintain simplicity of the control interface. A Draytek enterprise grade network was used to provide a stable network and VNP/port forwarding services. Redlight The client brief was to focus on simplicity while standing out to a prospective new owner. Redlight had to provide solutions for lighting, audio, heating, security, and door and gate entry systems. Many options were explored for all aspects of the solution, as it had to use the existing cabling infrastructure. For lighting, KNX was the best solution to use, and this allowed for more budget to be spent on the security and audio. The security system that has the ability to access CCTV cameras and monitor live footage, as well as be possibly connect to a third party was required, so Omni was chosen. Bitwise was added for AV control. Since the house will be sold, Redlight installed equipment that can be swapped out at any time.

Another crucial element was to devise a simple method of controlling the system that could be used by young children. With the exception of the children’s and guest rooms, every room has audio distribution and TVs. In-ceiling speakers were installed to not distract from the interior. The central control processor provides a “house off” function, which turns off the audio system. Sagar Smart Homes
Sagar Smart Homes faced the challenge to provide a fully automation system for a client who lived on the other side of the world. To combat the distance issue, meticulous planning and management went into the project. KNX is the backbone of the project, providing a holistic platform integrating all elements at a local and global level. A Savant AV platform runs seven video zones, fourteen audio zones, and a cinema room. The electricity and energy management integrations were the most complex aspects of the project. Wet underfloor heating and comfort cooling were fully integrated as there was no conflict between the two. The blinds, curtains, and shutters with solar
tracking prevent unwanted solar gain on the glass of the property. Each individual battery circuit can be monitored to check the health and performance of each unit, and alert the client if the units react differently. Mitsubishi heat exchangers convert solar energy into heat. The system monitors over 40 sensors and controls 21 pumps.

To make sure that all technology was as discreet as possible, Basalte Sentido switches were chosen. Some of the built-in thermostats were programmed to open and close automatic doors. TVs in the living areas are hidden behind motorised artwork, revealed on the Savant systems command. Every aspect of the project is featured on the GUI, from lighting to CCTV.

SMC The client brief was to protect the estate using CCTV and access control, including an intruder alarm. A total of 43 cameras, including static, PTZ, and dome cameras, composed the CCTV system. Camera recordings can be viewed on an iPhone or iPad when away from the property. Contact and vibration detectors are embedded in every accessible window and door and PIR motion detection is used throughout the property as both perimeter and trap protection. Additionally, SMC designed an entertainment system for the home. The data network consists of Ruckus wireless access points and a Maraki router. There’s a 75” Samsung screen in the games room, along with surround sound and other various screens. The Lutron lighting system works with the security systems. Perfect Integration
After viewing a recently completed project by Perfect Integration, the client chose the installer to be a part of a design team on a scheme in St. James, London. The development is over seven floors, four full floors of lateral apartments and an office on the top two floors, with a ground and lower ground floor. The interior designer on the team wanted integrated systems that would not impact the overall aesthetics. A KNX system allowed Perfect Integration to remotely monitor and integrate fault monitoring and alarms into apartment and landlord control systems. This reduced the size of the BMS panels in the plan room. Each separate system has been seamlessly integrated together with a Crestron system. Crestron in-wall touch panels are found in
the lobby, leaving area, media room, and bedrooms. When Perfect Integration was given the specification of the Lutron HomeWorks lighting scheme, they came up with the idea of housing all of the LED drivers in the dimming panel locations rather than in local to the fittings, as they had one dimming panel location at either end of the apartments, so the cable runs wouldn’t be too long. To maintain the aesthetics, custom sized drivers manufactured by Future Automation were made to match Lutron dimming panels. Amina plaster over speaker units were integrated into fan-coil joinery and then vented into the AC exhaust vents. Media rooms were composed of Amina invisible speakers and custom B&W speakers. Since fan coil units need to be cleaned every six months, bespoke brackets for TVs were designed to avoid on-going maintenance costs and possible risks.

The brief for this project required SONA to install a rack system that would house 50RU of equipment, and would incorporate space for proper thermal and cable management. As the property benefited from a comprehensive cable infrastructure system covering all key rooms, it was also imperative that the rack system was designed and installed in such a way that future upgrades could be carried out efficiently and with minimal disruption. After studying the architectural plans, and consultation with the onsite contractor and interior designer, SONA suggested a radical alteration to a wall of fitted cupboards which were planned for installation in a guest bedroom on the top floor. The wall behind these cupboards backed on a store room, so the installer proposed removing a significant section of the wall which would allow them to house equipment racks in the cupboards, making them accessible from the front through the cupboards, and from the rear via the store room. The three racks were housed in its own cupboard section, with a further cupboard designated for the cable termination panel. The rack that SONA designed and installed provided secure housing for all of the central network, audio, video, control and CCTV equipment. All intra-rack cabling was installed to the highest standards and in line with technical guidelines and the physical arrangement of equipment. Vent panels and fans were designed to ensure the most efficient thermal management of the equipment.

Elytronic Elytronic was fortunate enough that when this project was built, a dedicated central equipment room was included in the property plans. This allowed the installer to house four system racks in one space. A raised floor allowed all cabling to be routed and enter the racks from below. This ensured a clean installation and allows for changes to be made easily. A dedicated air conditioning unit was installed and activates if the heat of the rack rises above the threshold. The use of Velcro ties on the CAT cables provides a neat and tidy rack design. The room houses two of the twelve intelligent lighting panels which were custom fabricated and assembled by Elytronic, the security system, fire alarm system, CCTV system and all the underfloor heating thermostats.

Elytronic Elytronic was fortunate enough to have a brief with no time limitations and a generous budget. The main demand was to have a fully integrated system covering all electronics and audio visual sub systems. Elytronic installed a system to control everything, including the 260 lighting circuits accessible via touchscreens, wall keypads, tablets and mobiles. Intelligent lighting panels have been custom fabricated for the project and the cabling is concealed in a raised floor system, meaning that a clean installation can take place and can be easily routed. Astronomical clock switches ensure that external lighting is turned on at sunset and off for sunrise and there are also over twenty motion/occupancy sensors installed to make sure lights are not on when not in use.

A beautifully presented showroom that allows customers to walk in and say – ‘I want this’ The showroom is in a fully renovated stables building of the prestigious Capesthorn Hall and is spread over two levels, featuring a kitchen, dining room, media room, bathroom and office. The first room that visitors enter is the kitchen. Here, Intuitive Homes has installed a Lutron keypad by the door, which features a pre-set ‘start the day’ button. When pressed, the whole showroom lights up with a preconfigured lighting scene and automatically starts a playlist. The dining room features a custom Future
Automation sliding panel system which hides a 50” Panasonic 4K screen within a panelled wall. The room can be controlled from any of the universal controllers on iPhone, iPads or the Crestron TSW touch panels, but there is also a dedicated Crestron HR-150 handheld controller for quick selection and control of audio and video sources. The media room is the centrepiece of the showroom. Intuitive Homes wanted to find a balance between a discreet TV lounge and a fully-fledged home cinema. An 85” 4K Panasonic display was installed in this space, along with Amina speakers around the TV
for the front channels and B&W in-ceiling speakers.

Intuitive Homes
Whilst the space is impressive, the automation is where the wow factor really comes into play Intuitive Homes was tasked with transforming an open plan concrete car park into a one of a kind ‘man cave’ where the client could escape from the outside world, store his wine collection, entertain his friends and display his supercars. This included a rotating turntable that not only displays the cars, but makes reversing in or out of the garage a thing of the past. The installer worked with an industrial controls company to create an automated rotating turntable as a centrepiece, encasing the car within curved glass and leather. Over 15 sensors were installed in this area, which provided Intuitive Homes with the information they required to include some clever features. The magnetic flux vehicle detection sensors that were fitted in the driveway and underneath the cars were calibrated to the client’s cars. This allows the automation system to recognise that the client is home and start up a pre-defined playlist of background music.
If the man cave is not in use and the system detects someone coming down the stairs from the main house, then a playlist starts up, the lights set to the optimum levels and the car begins rotating. The whole basement shuts down once the room is empty. Intuitive Homes installed 16 circuits of standard dimmable LED’s and used DMX controlled LED strips. The installer programmed the system to give red or green lighting depending on whether the turntable is safe to walk on or not. A custom user Intuitive Homes interface was developed for the Crestron touch 121 Palatine Road, Didsbury, panels to provide an ‘iron Manchester, M20 3YA, UK man’ feel. +44 (0)161 738 1076

MESL MESL was challenged to design, supply and commission the highest quality outdoor cinema for use on the aft deck of a superyacht. MESL selected a Runco LS-12HBd 3-chip DLP projector and housed it in a projector cabinet in the same style as the coffee table, to make it appear part of the furniture. To maintain the clean design, MESL avoided the use of speaker stands for the surround and back speakers and commissioned custom supports which attached to mounting point on the speakers. The challenge was to provide a screen frame to tension the 3.5m Screen Research perforated screen material. Being on a yacht, the installer also had to consider the implications of wind. MESL designed an extremely strong, stainless steel box section frame with a screw jack arrangement at the top of the stanchions so that the complete frame could be tensioned.

The installer used 4G mobile broadband in conjunction with the existing ADSL, which was the best performing solution given the location and lack of alternatives. The internet speed was improved from below 2Mbps to approximately 20Mbps.

Entry Panel Artistry // INSTALLER
Perfect Integration With the developer of the building commissioning two decorative panels that replicate the view of waves in the ocean on either side of the main entrance, Perfect Integration was challenged with where to mount the video entry panel. The installer came up with the idea to not just mount the entry panel into the casting, but turn the casting into the entry panel. Perfect Integration worked with Future Automation to laser holes into the panel for the buttons, speaker, mic, camera and fob reader. With mounting points welded in place and the buttons engraved, the team worked on the system hardware post-installation. The end result is an entry panel that seamlessly integrates into a decorative panel.

// COMPANY
Invision UK
Improving the way you experience sound has been the focus of the Origin team for over three decades. The Director Collection lends itself to multi-room audio as well as home cinema. Every single element of the Origin speaker is carefully chosen with one goal in mind, to create the most awe inspiring sonic impression possible. The Director Collection is filled with these innovations, from the patented tweeter design to the ZipClip tool-less mounting system, from the unique woofer surround to the pivoting mid/tweeter
assembly, these speakers sound better because they are better. Origin’s ZipClip tool-less mounting system is one of the many features on the Director Collection. Once the mounting hole is cut a mounting ring is inserted and squeezed into place. The speaker assembly is then inserted into the mounting ring and locked into place with a simple clockwise twist. The system simplifies the mounting process and increases installation efficiency, which will help reduce time spent on installation.
