The last ten years has seen nothing short of a revolution in the way we consume TV content in our homes. But what does the future hold and how will this affect the residential CI business?

What next

FOR TV? Paul Gray, Director TV Electronics and Europe TV Research at research organisation, DisplaySearch addressed this subject in one of the highlight sessions at the inaugural CEDIA conference recently. CEDIA Communicates invited Paul to share his insights with us:

“On a global scale, the TV business has peaked as the shift to digital broadcasting in developed regions, combined with rapid price reductions, accelerated the replacement cycle. The industry now has to learn how to survive in a slow-growing market, with growth largely from consumers in emerging markets who have less money to spend. Developed markets are suffering from the aftermath of the sales surge combined with less disposable income and a slowing in the pace of innovation in TV. Smartphones and tablets have captured consumers’ imaginations now.” “TV setmakers are responding in three

ways: bigger, better and more functions. Bigger speaks for itself; the underloaded Sharp Sakai Gen10 panel fab is optimized for 60” and larger. Such huge displays are now available as the company seeks to fill its capacity.” “Better is being met by AMOLED and 4k2k. Both technologies are immature at this time: AMOLED will ship in tiny quantities this year (perhaps 200) worldwide, with the technology too immature to become a significant force for the next year or two.“ “4k2k offers double the resolution of current TVs. At present both the display technology is somewhat immature and native content is not available beyond still

photos. While terrestrial broadcast remains some years away, it is possible that an ecosystem could be created in 5 years for satellite broadcast. The risk is that TV products become available too fast and disillusion sets in, as it did with 3D.” “The functional side is being met by ‘Smart TVs’ which offer more than conventional viewing. However, our research suggests that consumers’ app usage habits gravitate towards long-form video: the value proposition of TV is simply watching TV. Adding complexity merely exposes the difficulty of using a screen you cannot touch. “ “Yet, at the same time tablets and smartphones are in the room and the TV has to learn to coexist with them. Such devices win in terms of the usage experience and the TV will have to learn to play nicely and seamlessly with them. The TV set maker’s job will be to concentrate on a seamless interoperation of the two.”

CEDIA UNVEILS SMART HOME CABLING REQUIREMENTS FOR THE MODERN HOME This new publication provides a useful and practical step-by-step guide. It identifies the key requirements for an installation and defines three grades of recommended cabling infrastructure. Grade 1 will ensure the effective and reliable delivery of internet services, home networking, TV, satellite, radio, telephone, conferencing and other entertainment services to most rooms in the

house. A Grade 2 infrastructure will additionally provide the capability for whole-home distribution of audio-visual content using discrete in-ceiling speakers and in-wall control points. With a Grade 3 infrastructure, functionality is further extended to embrace lighting control, motorised curtains and blinds, access control systems, CCTV networks, environmental and heating control. In addition, systems that allow these technologies to be controlled and integrated by a single control

system using in-wall controls and handheld remote devices. Through a clearly defined staged process and using explanatory diagrams, the document outlines the incoming services and the planning, cabling and testing essentials which should be followed for each Grade.

“This document provides the essential guidance that’s needed on wiring to support today’s digital and connected lifestyles,” says Matt Dodd, CEDIA Education Chair. “We would always recommend that a CEDIA specialist is involved as soon as possible in a project life-cycle to advise and design the cabling infrastructure. Where that’s not possible, for whatever reason, then these guidelines provide best practice advice to other trades, specifically electricians and builders. They will also help specifiers and developers make the right choices at an early design stage.” A copy of the Recommended Wiring Guidelines publication will be sent out to all members in the 2013 renewal packs.

CEDIA CELEBRATES SUCCESSFUL CONFERENCE CONFERENCE 2012

More than 190 people attended the conference which was hosted by Sky technology journalist, Martin Stanford, and took place on Tuesday 23rd and Wednesday 24th October 2012 at the Inmarsat Conference Centre in London.

“This first ever CEDIA Conference has proved a tremendous success,” says CEDIA Chair, Gary Lewis. “All the speakers provided delegates with useful food for thought on the future of home technology and the opportunities for CI businesses. They were equally revealing, inspiring and provocative. I would like to thank everyone involved. ‘The Future of Home Technology’ was an exceptional two days for CI businesses.” Futurologist James Bellini began the event with a talk entitled, ‘Horizon 2020: Beam Me Up’, taking a visionary look at the technologies and lifestyle changes heading our way. Carl Hibbert from research organisation Futuresource, then helped explore the current trend in second screen viewing and the impact that connected services and OTT platforms will have in the years ahead. Paul Gray, Director of European TV Research at DisplaySearch, meanwhile, shifted the focus to screen makers and looked at manufacturing changes in the pipeline, asking the challenging question: ‘What Next for TV?’. Dr Graham McAllister of Player Research took delegates on a different journey with an inspirational look at the lessons CI could learn from the video games industry where attention centres on the user experience. Jim Read from consulting firm, Arup, closed the day with a talk which looked at lessons from commercial buildings and how these could be applied to home technology in the future. Day two opened with a session from Lord Inglewood, Chairman of the House of Lords Select Committee on Communications which explained the Government’s strategy, thinking and likely way ahead on the roll-out of superfast broadband. CEDIA’s Dave Pedigo then challenged integrators to look to the future and embrace the intuitive home with his presentation, which fed into a talk from Duncan Maiden of Europe’s CISCO Academy examining the hugely significant role of IP in the

60 seconds with…

Richard Hayward Who are you?

What’s your favourite project and why?

Richard Hayward - Lead Marketing Manager, Legrand Electric Limited.

Working with the Autistic society, designing building automation systems to suit sheltered accommodation for young adults. By offering a range of complete automated solutions through to full user-interactive systems to cater for the specific requirement of the resident of each apartment, we were able to make a difference to peoples’ lives by providing them with independent living solutions that help them to combat the challenges of daily life.

What’s your company and where is it based? Legrand is a global specialist in electrical and digital building infrastructures with over 70 offices around the world. I work for the UK subsidiary out of our head office in Birmingham. How did you get into the industry? I started out by setting up my own company installing SMATV Systems when Sky first went digital, but could see the potential of home automation and so moved into that area in around 2000. What’s your favourite film? Highlander What’s your favourite album? Sabbath Bloody Sabbath – Black Sabbath. As a fellow Brummie, I love a bit of Ozzy and co!

Which custom installation technology do you consider the most important today and why? Energy management! It will be down to the manufacturers and custom installers to set the standards by ensuring we deliver on our energy targets and continue with our aspirations. How long have you been a CEDIA member? 2 years.

It will be down to the manufacturers and custom installers to set the standards by ensuring we deliver on our energy targets and continue with our aspirations.

What do you consider your biggest achievement as a CEDIA member? Ensuring that Legrand’s training courses are CEDIA accredited. We run courses each week for smart electricians who are interested in home automation and building management systems. Having these courses CEDIA approved creates a link between the electrical industry and the custom install market, which I believe is essential as the industry grows. Why is Home Cinema Design certification important? The considerable investment made in the hardware must be matched by excellent installation. What’s the biggest issue for custom installation businesses today and how can they deal with it? Many of the products and services we offered 15 years ago now appear in the mainstream retail channel. As a manufacturer, we can easily identify what is part of the fabric of the building: Lighting, HVAC, shutter control, access control, built-in speakers etc, and where we and our trained installers can add value. If there was one thing you could change in the industry what would it be? I’m a very positive person, and I would encourage everyone to appreciate how much fun this industry is. We can do some amazing things already – just imagine what we can achieve in the future! If you weren’t in the custom installation sector, what would you like to be doing and why? Rugby Coach… best game in the world I’m too old to play (or at least that’s what my son tells me!)

SURVEY REVEALS UK RESIDENTIAL CI INDUSTRY SET TO TOP £1 BILLION CEDIA has announced the findings of its recent extensive survey into the size and scope of the UK residential custom installation sector. The results show an industry anticipating a 12% annual growth in turnover this year and a total market size in excess of £1 billion by the end of 2012.

According to the research, average projected turnover for CI companies in 2012 stands at £1.43m, up from a reported £1.27m in 2011. The market research sized the UK residential custom installation sector as worth from between £720 million and £950 million for 2011, and, based on survey responses, predicted a market value of £1.07 billion for 2012. This comprehensive research project, commissioned by CEDIA Region 1, was carried out by international market research company, Parks Associates from July until September this year. Approximately a quarter of the industry took part in the survey. Other findings in the survey included: • The average project price expected for 2012 is £48,000. For 2011, the average project revenue is reported at £40,600. • 42% of firms said they exclusively completed projects only in the UK; 58% carried out installations worldwide, with the majority taking place in continental Europe. • Approximately 90% of the UK’s custom installers complete audio/video projects. • 55% of all projects take place in existing homes and 45% in new-build properties. • Equipment costs account for approximately half the value of a typical residential contract. • An estimated 1250 companies are active in the UK residential custom installation sectors.

A full copy of the UK market research report will be available. The report is free to those companies who contributed to the survey and priced at £349.00 to CEDIA members and £795.00 to non-members. Please email research@cedia.co.uk for details.

IMPORTANT LEGALS: mobile phone boosters We are aware that custom installers sometimes get asked by clients about mobile phone boosters or enhancers. It is illegal to install any jammers, enhancers, boosters or repeaters without obtaining a licence from Ofcom, which are currently only issued to network operators. There have been a number of instances recently where consumers have had signal enhancers

installed in their homes and both the client and the business that installed the equipment have been heavily fined and have been warned that the fines are unlimited. Culprits can also face up to 2 years imprisonment. Section 8 of the 2006 Act forbids the installation or use of wireless telegraphy equipment (radio) in the UK mainland Northern Ireland and

territorial waters, the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands, unless an appropriate license has been obtained from Ofcom, or there are Regulations in force exempting it from the licensing requirements.
