A 4K FUTURE? The residential custom installation industry is readying itself for mass market 4K Ultra HD TV which is set to become a "significant technology segment", according to the latest research from market analysts, Futuresource Consulting. "Although 4K ultra-high definition video still has a two to three year incubation period ahead, it is making its presence known. Global 4K TV shipments will grow from just 62,000 units last year, to 780,000 in 2013 and 22 million units in 2017," Futuresource predicts. Researchers suggest that the arrival of native 4K content will increase consumer awareness and help boost sales "from 2015 onwards." Futuresource also anticipates that most global TV manufacturers will launch a range of 4K TVs by the end of this year.

"LCD TV panel manufacturers and premium TV brands have been looking for the next hot trigger to accelerate flat panel replacement. 3D in the home was an attempt to achieve this and it has yet to become the solid success that many had hoped for," says Futuresource's Head of Consumer Electronics, Simon Bryant. "4K represents a more natural progression for the industry,

but one that brings its own challenges, not least the intricacies of producing 4K panels at high yield rates and the complexities of delivering the bandwidth-hungry content." "Substantial compression improvements provided by the HEVC codec will smooth the way for broadcast,” adds Simon. “Although the real-time encoding required for live transmission is still embryonic, solutions are being trialled and evaluated." Vassilis Seferidis, Director, European Business Development at Samsung Electronics, supports the Futuresource view, believing that ultra-high definition TV is on track to become a mass-market proposition by 2017. Speaking at the recent Futuresource Entertainment Summit 2013 in London, Seferidis based his prediction on the take-up of high definition since its introduction. He noted that major operators had launched HD services when penetration of HD sets had

reached the order of five per cent.

“Our estimation is that ultra-high definition will become mainstream by the year 2017. The question is whether operators will wait for penetration to reach this five per cent level before introducing channels. There are good indications that will start earlier as well.” He noted that a number of operators such as Sky Deutschland were already experimenting with U-HD production, describing it as “the natural next step” for resolution. “Ultra-high definition is a market that’s going to happen, basically driven by consumer demand, but also by operators and manufacturers, who want to differentiate their products”. Be sure to check out the latest in 4K innovation at this year’s CEDIA Expo in Denver. Visit www.expo.cedia.net for more information on the event, 4K exhibitors and education sessions.

MARKET RESEARCH UNDERWAY NEW SOCIAL MEDIA FOR BUSINESS COURSE CEDIA has announced the launch of a new one-day course designed to help residential custom installation companies use social media effectively in their business. The Social Media for Business course, which takes place at CEDIA’s head office in St Neots, near Cambridge, will equip attendees with the skills they need to deploy a social media strategy in their own business right away. The day features a mixture of formal teaching, group discussion, workshop sessions and individual goal setting tasks to provide a clear understanding of the various social media platforms. It will enable attendees to communicate productively using a variety of social media tools and help them measure the success of these activities against their company goals.

“Platforms like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube, Instagram and Pinterest offer simple ways to get businesses noticed,” says Matt Dodd, CEDIA’s Education Chair. “They can help CI companies build awareness for highquality home technology and the professional design and installation services they offer. The potential impact is massive.” For further details and to book a place on the 10th October 2013 Social Media for Business course, please visit http://www.cediaeducation.com/socialmedia-for-business. An early bird discount of 5% is available for bookings made up to 14 days before the start of the course. Attending the course earns 6 CEU points for Certified Individuals.

CEDIA has commissioned international market research company, Parks Associates, to repeat its extensive survey into the UK residential custom installation sector first carried out last year. Commencing this month, CEDIA are again surveying custom integrators installing CEDIA portfolio products in the UK to build on the picture of the residential custom installation industry; last year, the UK market value, based on survey findings, was worth in excess of £1 billion.

“Last year’s research was a significant first step for the UK residential custom installation industry,” says Wendy Griffiths, Executive Director of CEDIA Region 1. “Carrying out research again this year will help us identify market trends, assess changes in the size, scope and potential of the sector and validate the results of last year’s study. Above all, it will provide all stakeholders within our sector with high value information that will ensure they can move their businesses forward with greater certainty.” According to last year’s research, average projected turnover for UK CI companies in 2012 stood at £1.43m, up from a reported £1.27m in 2011. The survey sized the UK residential custom installation sector as worth from between £720 million and £950 million for 2011, and predicted a market value of £1.07 billion by the end of 2012. This year, CEDIA has focused the questions on the priority areas for UK companies. The streamlined study is being conducted principally through an on-line survey,

Market Research Report UK Residential Custom Installation Industry 2011/12

allowing business owners to complete the survey at their convenience. All CEDIA member companies taking part will be eligible to receive one free copy of the survey, and all participating integrators will be entered into a draw to win one of three VIP packages to attend ISE 2014.

“CEDIA’s research findings are a great tool for custom installers,” states Tricia Parks, CEO of Parks Associates.“The data helps custom installers understand what products are actively sought by target customers, and findings even help custom installers decide where to focus their initiatives. By completing its survey annually, CEDIA research findings also provide trend data and custom installer views on new and hot trends.” Parks Associates is an internationally recognised market research and consulting company, specialising in emerging consumer technology products and services. CEDIA has worked with Parks Associates since 1998, and the partnership has recently seen the company conduct market research for CEDIA in the USA as well as the UK.

Special Recognition for Simon Buddle A brand new Awards category was unveiled at the 2013 Awards Ceremony, The Special Recognition Award, created to recognise and celebrate the contribution of individuals to the work of CEDIA. This award went to Simon Buddle, Head of Technology at SMC, after many years an active volunteer in CEDIA’s education, through various teaching roles, and with his knowledge, expertise and enthusiasm he was also crucial in the development of the recently launched CEDIA Wiring Guidelines.

“Simon Buddle unquestionably deserves special recognition and we are delighted to present him with this Award,” says Wendy Griffiths, CEDIA’s Executive Director. Simon was delighted, saying, “I feel very honoured and humble to receive this award for work that actually brings me a huge amount of pleasure. I couldn’t have done it without the support of the whole team at SMC, so I’d like to say a special thank you to them. Raising the professional standards of our industry remains a goal that I am committed to and to receive such an award to recognise that is great.”

NEW NETWORKING CERTIFICATION As part of its ongoing commitment to raising standards for home network installation and integration across the region, CEDIA has introduced a new Networking Certification and supporting three-day Networking School.

By 2014, Cisco believes traffic from wireless devices will exceed that from wired devices. It is also predicted that Wi-Fi and mobile devices will account for 61% of IP traffic by 2016. The new Networking credential will identify those industry professionals who have proven they possess the knowledge needed to successfully implement a robust network in the home. It is based on the body of knowledge found in CEDIA's IP and Networking track of learning. This Certification is ideally suited to those home technology professionals who install and configure residential systems; IT professionals who want to enhance their credibility within the consumer electronics industry; system designers who need to know they are specifying the right design and hardware and control system programmers who are now interacting with the network daily.

“Virtually all technologies in the home are becoming part of the home network,” says CEDIA’s Education Director, Matt Dodd. “To provide network systems that meet increasing speed and reliability requirements, the home technology professional of today and tomorrow must be able to design, install, configure, and maintain a high quality, complex network. CEDIA's Residential Networking Specialist Credential seeks to raise the standard for home networks across the industry. Own the network and the home by mastering your knowledge on wireless networks.”

Course dates and locations are as follows:

20th - 22nd August 2013 CEDIA HQ, St. Neots

The CEDIA website has further details, including early bird discount deal, at

8th - 10th October 2013 Birmingham City University

www.cediaeducation.com/networking-school The three-day Networking School comprises modules looking at IP Theory and Practice, Network Security, Segmentation and Remote Access, and a Wireless Networking Workshop. Also covered will be all the IP and Wireless Networking content necessary to attain the CEDIA EST2, EST3 and Designer Level One Certification Exams, and much of the groundwork for the Residential Networking Specialist Examination which is taken separately. By the end of the school, attendees should be able to implement TCP/IP connected hardware in 95% of the situations encountered in a residential environment.

NEW WIRELESS AUDIO WHITE PAPER CEDIA has released a new white paper to provide professionals in the residential custom installation sector with an understanding on the opportunities wireless audio presents. This resource is available following recent figures showing that ninety percent of UK home technology professionals offer distributed audio as a service.

“Wireless audio solutions were previously viewed as a low performance solution for the DIY market,” says Matt Dodd, CEDIA Education Director. “However, as technology has developed and improved, it has now become an

opportunity for profit and growth for CI businesses. The Wireless Audio Solutions white paper is a great help to those looking to get started.” Wireless audio can add a viable, long-term profit stream to a business as it offers opportunities for recurring revenue. It lends itself to customers who are interested in building their system a little at a time or are ready to upgrade from an existing, basic wireless audio system. Best practice for installation and configuration, available technology, and consumer interest are covered in the new white paper.

60 seconds with…

Mike Beatty Who are you?

What’s your favourite film?

Mike Beatty

That’s a difficult question, but if I had to pick one it would be The Shawshank Redemption. I know it’s a predictable one, but I just loved it and I’m looking forward to watching it again on the big cinema at Pulse HQ.

What’s your company and where is it based Pulse Marketing is a sales, marketing and AV distribution company based in Stansted Mountfitchet, UK. We focus on offering our dealers the very best training and support; from sales and marketing, technical and on site assistance, plus so much more…

What’s your favourite album? I’m really enjoying Live Lounge at the moment. I would listen to Phil Collins Face Value again and again; when I was a little younger.

How did you get into the industry? What’s your favourite project and why? I started my life in the industry working for The Audiofile in Bishop’s Stortford in sales, selling audio brands such as Linn, Naim and Rega to name a few. I quickly realised that the AV industry was somewhere I’d like to stay – doesn’t seem like 22 years, but time flies when you’re having fun!

It has to be our training facility, as we have dreamed since the inception of our company that we would one day have a facility like this. Whilst project managing the build, I can now see just how hard our dealers work to bring together their amazing projects.

Too many dealers are cutting and pasting systems, just to make the sale

Which custom installation technology do you consider the most important today and why?

Anamorphic lenses, as it’s only right that we allow clients to watch films without black bars in the way the director intended. D-BOX has been a revelation and a product that I can see becoming a must have for all cinemas in the future. How long have you been a CEDIA member? We have been a CEDIA member for the best part of 15 years and have worked closely with the CEDIA team to help wherever possible to achieve the necessary changes for our industry. I am so proud to have been asked to be a part of the Nominating Working Group with Buzz Delano, Larry Pexton from Triad and Jason Sloan from Sonance.

What do your consider your biggest achievement as a CEDIA member? Opening our training facility and writing and designing two amazing courses: ‘Introduction to Cinema’, (which was nominated for an award for Best Training Course) and DiSC; which is the most comprehensive and advanced course available to help dealers with the process of selling cinema systems. This course is coming soon. What’s the biggest issue for custom installation businesses today and how can they deal with it? The biggest issue for Custom Installers to deal with is that too many ‘cinema installers’ aren’t giving their clients what they deserve. When the point of reference for a cinema is a plasma on a wall; clients need not be educated about what’s possible. Too many dealers are cutting and pasting systems that they are ‘comfortable’ installing, just to make sure of the sale. If there was one thing you could change in the industry what would it be? Those CEDIA members that have the passion, enthusiasm, knowledge and experience in installing dedicated cinemas would be highlighted as specialists in their field. If you weren’t in the custom installation sector, what would you like to be doing and why? I’d love to train children to realise their potential and to teach life skills to them at a young age. I have learnt so much about life and business in the last 10 years and I wish that someone had given me some insight when I was younger… or the next Spurs manager would be pretty cool – I manage my boy’s under 11 football team and I think I’m doing quite well actually. Surely, that gives me enough qualifications to get me the top job! ☺
