CEDIA CERTIFICATION

What is CEDIA Certification?

Why CEDIA Certification?

CEDIA Certification is a set of four credentials that reflect defined areas of knowledge in the home technology industry. Electronic Systems Certified (ESC) is a general certification which covers the industry at large, while Electronic Systems Certified Technician (ESC-T), Electronic Systems Certified Designer (ESC-D), and Electronic Systems Certified Networking Specialist (ESC-N) are more specialised and advanced.

CEDIA Certification allows individuals to prove their competency to peers, clients, and potential employers. Many industry businesses consider CEDIA Certifications in their hiring and advancement processes, as the credential demonstrates a commitment to excellence and ongoing professional development.

Earning and retaining certification allows you to demonstrate that you have completed the required study and field experience to master a particular skillset and body of knowledge. Certifications are held by the individual; you earn the certification, and you carry it with you as you continue your career.

Each CEDIA Certification serves as a framework for an organised path of study. In following the preparation plan for the exam, candidates build a well-rounded skillset and knowledge base in their chosen specialty. Certification also establishes your business as a credible partner in the eyes of end users and other stakeholders, proving that your company has a high level of proven competency and is committed to best practices. In addition, certification helps consumers find you; companies with certified professionals benefit from enhanced premium listings on the Find a Pro search at cedia.org, which receives over 40,000 searches annually.

CEDIA CERTIFICATION

BadgeCert CEDIA provides a set of tools to help integrators market their certifications to both homeowners and to their fellow industry professionals. This includes access to digital badges through BadgeCert. Through this program, digital certification badges can be easily added to email signatures, LinkedIn accounts, websites, and other social media platforms. Clicking on a digital badge allows clients to verify the current status and expiration date of an individual certification and see what knowledge and skills it represents. In addition to the logos and the digital badge program, each CEDIA Certified professional has access to marketing collateral that outlines why a homeowner should hire a CEDIA Certified professional.

Sample Applications Recommended uses for the CEDIA Certification logo include your email signature, business card, website, LinkedIn profile, or proposals. Below are a few examples of how you might incorporate the logo into your materials. For digital applications, CEDIA has partnered with BadgeCert to provide digital certification badges. Digital badges provide your clients with additional information about your certification, adding context and credibility. Contact certification@cedia.org for information on digital badging.

THE TECHNICIAN

A Technician is the person who installs, configures, and maintains electronic systems in the field. This includes installing the infrastructure (cabling etc.), the equipment, the control systems, and user interfaces. Many Technicians do their work based strictly on a work order, which is created by someone else. But in a smaller company the same person may specify the equipmemt and design the system, and then install it themselves. A good technician has an understanding of how signals and electricity work, allowing them to solve problems and troubleshoot issues in the field when necessary. Some people who love working with their hands, and the satisfaction of seeing their work through to completion, work their entire career in the field as a technician. They continue to learn and expand their skillset over the years and become more and more valuable as they become adept at system calibration, programming, troubleshooting etc. They may become a Lead Technician or crew leader, supervising the work of other technicians and mentoring them as they learn new skills.

NETWORKING SCHOOL

wireless residential networking

OVERVIEW

TOPICS COVERED INCLUDE

WiFi connectivity is a key communication method for much of the personal technology we use today. The increasingly crowded WiFi spectrum is busy delivering media, email, VoIP and other services to home owners and their neighbours. With this in mind, it’s essential that AV engineers fully understand wireless technology to ensure fast, and reliable service to their customers.

- Understanding the 7 layer OSI Model and how it relates to networking - Applying the OSI model to residential network structure and setup - Recognising and understanding basic network hardware - IP Addressing - Basic network troubleshooting - Common network protocols including: TCP, UDP, IP, DHCP, DNS, and NAT - Selecting and configuring consumer routers - Creating system documentation for IP networks

This course goes back to basics to understand the fundamental technology behind wireless, and RF (Radio Frequency) transmission as a physical layer in the OSI model. The course will compare wireless to other physical layer types and explores the behaviours of RF considering data speed, frequency and coverage. Attendees will learn the benefits and opportunities of wireless security, and explore how to ensure secure networks and how to expand a wireless network to cover larger areas.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND? This course is appropriate for attendees with existing knowledge of IP networks that have a firm understanding of the wired network environment. Having previously completed CEDIA’s Residential Networking course would be ideal.

THE DESIGNER

The role of the a designer ranges from directly interviewing the client to evaluate their needs and lifestyle, to specifying, to specifying the functionality and performance of a system, and designing the wiring scheme and user interface concepts. This varies somewhat from company to company. A designer must have full understanding of the equipment, how it works, and how it is controlled. A designer must stay up to date on emerging technologies and unique products which can be used to solve unique challenges. Since the most important part of our industry is now integration and control, a designer needs to have a solid knowledge of each and every subsystem that will be part of the larger integrated system.
