The M.S. degree may be completed with or without a thesis. The M.S. degree requires 32 credit hours of graduate course credit if a thesis is part of the program (with 8 of the 32 hours comprising the thesis), and 36 hours without a thesis. It is possible to complete the M.S. non-thesis degree in one year or less. The Ph.D. program requires 32 additional hours of coursework beyond the M.S. degree, plus a comprehensive research program and preparation of a dissertation for an additional 32 hours of thesis research credit.

Joint Degree Program with Business Administration (MBA) Administered by the College of Commerce and Business Administration, this program requires that students apply for admission to both the MBA program and the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. The CEE requirements for the MSCE degree in this joint program are 32 hours of course work including three 500-level courses in CEE.
MArch + MS-CEE (structures) or MArch + MS-CEE (construction management)
Administered through the School of Architecture, this program requires a baccalaureate in architectural studies and is intended for graduate students in architecture. The CEE requirements for the M.S. degree in this joint program are 32 hours of course work including three 500-level courses in CEE.
Computational Science and Engineering Certificate Program or Concentration Students within the M.S. and Ph.D. programs have the option to complete a certificate in Computational Science and Engineering within the M.S. and Ph.D. program.

Students in the Global Leaders in Construction Management program visit construction sites in the U.S. and abroad to learn about engineering practice in international settings. The Global CEE program offers international study abroad and internship opportunities. Graduate students assisting with the CEE 449 course lead undergraduates on projects in Africa. CEE ONLINE Students can earn master’s degrees and certificates entirely online, or just take classes as nondegree students. All online students receive access to recorded on-campus lectures and follow the class syllabus, including the same assignments, exams and projects as on-campus students. The M.S. degree in Civil Engineering requires 36 credit hours; no thesis is required. Online students have five years to complete the program.
