CEE at Illinois offers a highly ranked, comprehensive undergraduate curriculum, which requires 128 hours of course work leading to a Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering. The first two years of study for undergraduate students build the base needed for the civil and environmental engineering education: students take physics, math, chemistry, theoretical and applied mechanics, general engineering courses and electives. The last two years of study involve primarily civil and environmental engineering courses. Students elect a primary and secondary area of study from the seven areas of concentration and three interdisciplinary programs within the department. yy yy yy yy yy yy yy yy yy yy

STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS Want to build and race a concrete canoe? Interested in green building or water issues? At Illinois, engineering students find numerous opportunities to get involved. Organizations offer students a chance to make friends, have fun and learn something outside of the classroom or lab. They also bring students together with faculty, alumni and practicing engineers. Student organizations bring in speakers from various engineering disciplines, sponsor field trips to construction and manufacturing sites, help coordinate Engineering Open House, sponsor movies, competitions and social events, and assist in finding summer employment for students. CEE alone has more than 20 student organizations.

Each year, approximately 100 CEE at Illinois undergraduates participate in research in paid positions assisting faculty. Thanks to alumni giving, the department’s program, Research Experience for Undergraduates, continues to grow. Getting involved in research as an undergrad: yy Teaches students about research as a function of academic life and a possible career choice. yy Gives students valuable experience that distinguishes them in the job search or in applying to graduate studies. yy Facilitates close working and mentoring relationships with faculty and graduate students.

INTERNATIONAL PROGRAMS Strong international ties help CEE attract the world’s brightest students to Illinois and provide domestic students with opportunities to experience technical and cultural diversity. Overseas collaborations enable CEE at Illinois to offer expertise to emerging educational establishments worldwide, foster faculty and student exchange, and achieve global engagement in teaching and research. Many CEE students have the chance to travel as part of their education. Students in the CEE 449 course travel to Africa and Mexico. The Global Leaders in Construction Management group visits construction sites around the globe. Some student organizations have an international focus, such as Engineers without Borders and Bridges to Prosperity. Additional opportunities are offered through International Programs in Engineering and the university’s study abroad program. Cooperative agreements with top overseas universities facilitate student exchange and collaborations in research and education. Among them, the 3+2 BS+MS program allows international students to spend their senior year at Illinois, obtain a bachelor of science degree from their home institution, and continue their education to earn a master of science degree from CEE at Illinois.

yy The CEE Job Fair, offered twice a year, hosts 60-75 companies offering full-time jobs and internships. yy Backpack to Briefcase is a professional development series offered in the fall, with topics including interviewing skills, negotiating compensation and resume writing. yy CEE Networking Night allows students to gain insight from recruiters and engineering professionals about what companies desire in prospective employees. yy Alumni networking events throughout the year give students a chance to interact with CEE graduates at all career stages.
