Global Exploration of Graphic Design

Introduction

The History and Futures module introduces students to how graphic design interprets narrative, to distil, reform or remodel stories for a new purpose. It’s also central to students applying a more in-depth critical and contextual understanding to their practice, providing the opportunity for connecting theory and practice (praxis), in conjunction to key themes and issues facing the subject and those who collaborate within it today. This module also begins to question the role that design and the designer have to play in society and the creative community and networks it is part of. Take a look at the work produced by current students during this module:

Jamie Baldwin The Bodmin Typeface “During this module I was encouraged to explore my local area and take a closer look at examples of found type. I began working on the idea of creating a typeface that shows some historical influence and appreciation of craftsmanship. The stone carvings had been a big influence on my research; I had discussed the complexity of the found type material and processes with the tutors who encouraged me to explore this idea further. I had found inspiration in the use of wood and stone; I wanted to create something that would pay respect to the local traditions and some of the design choices I had noticed. This being said I wanted to bring the area up to date and felt that by combining some of the sharp edges with a softer sans serif typeface I would be able to achieve this. After exploring the idea on paper and sand, I was influenced by the old Cornish tin mines. Their tall chimney and angular roof points had inspired some of my letterforms. The final type is a series of rules and geometric shapes that combine to create a bold, heavy face that has some subtle edges to reflect the local area in Cornwall.

The Bodmin Typeface has been inspired by the history and traditions of Cornwall; harsh chiseled edges aim to celebrate the hand crafted and reflect the wildering moors. This title case is to be used for bold titles and headings. It aims to add a bold structure to any design.

Benjamin Parfitt Visual Writing “Counter!” pays homage to the historic subculture which took Bristol, the United Kingdom and the world from 1977-1984 by storm - the punk culture. There are many faces of the punk culture with the most prevalent characteristics being anti-government and championing the ideology of individual freedom. “Counter!” uses real-life stories from an ex-punk to depict what life as a punk was truly like. Counter! also focuses on the visual language within the city of Bristol at the time and reflects on how the punk scene has had an impact on future generations and has allowed them to be as expressive as they like.”

History Revealed + Story Told “West Street is a location in Bristol which has been subject to the negative side of gentrification as the city centre has gradually expanded, it has left areas such as West Street in a sad state. The typeface looks to replicate the area in its current state with the letterforms formed with integral pieces missing but still keeping some legibility of the letters that they once were.”
