With a generous gift from Cheryl and John Trott the Division of Sport Management in the Department of Health and Kinesiology has been able to bring some of the top names in the sport industry to the campus of Texas A&M University. The series allows top practitioners the opportunity to share their experiences with students, faculty, staff, and the Sport Management program at Texas A&M.

Sport Management Organizations Sport Marketing Association

SMA endeavors to develop beneficial relationships between sport marketing professionals and academicians through expansion of the field’s body of knowledge and multiple forums for professional interaction.

Sport Management Society

The SMS stimulates, encourages, and enhances professional development in the field of Sport Management. The goals of the SMS are to gather and share information pertaining to sports management with members of SMS; to develop leadership opportunities within SMS; to promote camaraderie and unity among students, faculty, and professionals in the field; and to provide networking opportunities through attendance at various professional meetings and conferences.

Non-Internship option The combination of two minors to complement the Sport Management coursework offered to students makes this option ideal for those wanting to study the sport industry from perspectives other than a business perspective. The current approved minors include journalism, coaching, communications, parks and natural resource management, tourism management, and business. The program also allows for the completion of a group of directed electives/cognates in place of a minor and currently has approved cognates in law, economics and finance, and international and cultural diversity management. Minor in Sport Management

The Department of Health and Kinesiology also offers a minor in Sport Management for those students who want an introduction to working with sport organizations. The minor complements a number of degrees and a majority of the courses are available on-line. Two of the minor courses will also meet International and Cultural Diversity requirements for the students core curriculum.

Careers in Sport

Sport is pervasive in American society. Millions of American avidly participate in recreational sports and athletics, while millions more follow sports as fans and spectators. In fact, the sport industry is big business, generating over $200 billion each year, making sport one of the top ten largest industries in the country. Indeed, the emergence of this large industry has recently given rise to the need for trained professionals to manage and administer sport. Texas A&M University offers a Bachelor of Science in Sport Management through the Department of Health and Kinesiology to help satisfy that need. The goals of this degree are to prepare students for careers as administrators and managers in athletic, health, and country clubs as well as entry level management positions in college and professional athletic organizations. Through this track, students are prepared for a diversity of roles in the areas of sport marketing and promotions, facility management and planning, activity programming and events management. The Sport Management Curriculum can be completed through two separate options. The internship option, which allows the student on-the-job training and employment opportunities, or the non-internship option, which equips the student with an additional minor.

The required business minor, the university supervised internship, and 12 hours of directed and free electives make this option ideal for students wanting to study Sport Management from a business perspective. Students in this option are encouraged to leverage the internship field experience to provide entry level access to the sport industry.
