MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
As I begin my fifth year as Executive Director of CEISMC, I find myself wondering where the years have gone. It seems like yesterday that I was struggling to understand a new university, a new state, and a new group of local schools and school leaders. Today, CEISMC continues to thrive. In 2019, we transitioned from the College of Sciences into the Office of Provost. We brought on new partners, reached out to new regions of the state, began exciting new research projects and outreach programs, and welcomed a new President! Georgia passed S.B. 108, which mandates computer science courses in middle and high school—an exciting and challenging opportunity to raise performance in Georgia’s schools.
M. Agnes Jones Elementary School, one of our community partner schools, distinguished itself with some of the largest achievement gains in the state! As always, we take pride in the enthusiasm and creativity we see in the young learners we are so fortunate to work with. We are continually impressed by the passion and ingenuity of our Georgia Tech faculty and student collaborators. We appreciate the community of Atlanta with boundless opportunities and continual challenges. We enter a new decade energized and ready to move the needle to improve STEM attainment for Georgia!
Regards,
Lizanne DeStefano, Ph. D. Executive Director Center for Education Integrating Science, Mathematics, and Computing Georgia Institute of Technology

HIGHLIGHTED PROGRAMS Amazon EarSketch Remix Competition [Amazon Future Engineer, $250,000]
This music remix contest uses the EarSketch program that was developed by Georgia Tech to helps students learn to code by making music. In the competition, students create an original song using music samples from the song entitled “SET” by award-winning musical performance artist Ciara, as well as other sounds from the EarSketch library. The contest is open to high school students in the United States. CEISMC developed an 8-week curriculum for EarSketch for K-12 Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) education and coordinates aspects of the competition with Georgia high schools. Ciara surprised students with a special visit to students at Paul Duke High School in Norcross, Georgia. The announcement of the competition winners is in February of 2020. The top 3 winners receive an allexpense-paid trip to Seattle for a VIP “Amazon Future Engineer for a Day” experience and the opportunity to present their song to Amazon Music. Biologically Inspired Design for Engineering Education (BIRDEE) [NSF #1907806 $2,998,593]
The way a ladybug folds its wings can help aerospace engineers design more compact satellites. Similarly, studying how ants dig tunnels could help us create tunnels more efficiently. Biologically-inspired design (BID) is the cornerstone of the BIRDEE project that is funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF). The 4-year project aims to increase the number of high school students interested in engineering by improving engineering design process learning and reshaping students’ views on their relationship with nature. BIRDEE will put high school engineering teachers in research labs at Georgia Tech for five weeks. This unique environment surrounds teachers with experienced engineers and scientists working at the forefront of BID. After the lab experience, the teachers will receive three, eight to ten-week BID units created by Georgia Tech engineers, researchers, and evaluators. Teachers will participate in ongoing professional development sessions that demonstrate strategies for teaching these units. Full STEAM AHEAD
[Arthur M. Blank Family Foundation, GTF390000056, $300,000]
Comprised of 3500 students, the Washington Cluster has a motto, “One cluster, one family,” and that family selected STEM as their signature academic program. For the past four years, each school has separately developed their STEM programs, with few opportunities for cross-school integration. Living up to the cluster motto requires the authentic collaboration of all schools for one common purpose. Working in partnership with CEISMC, the cluster offered the first-ever cluster-wide summer program, Full STEAM Ahead, in 2019. Spanning the entire month of June, Full STEAM Ahead served approximately 500 rising kindergarten through ninth grade students with a schedule consisting of morning instruction in English and math, afternoon projects in STEAM, and weekly field trips. 4|

GoSTEAM [The Goizueta Foundation, $5,000,000]
GoSTEAM is a 5-year partnership between Georgia Tech, PreK-12 schools, and other organizations in the metroAtlanta area. The educational collaborative works to create sustainable, school-based initiatives that integrate the arts and music into computer science, engineering, invention, and entrepreneurship education in authentic and compelling ways. CEISMC’s Georgia Intern Fellowships for Teachers (GIFT) program pairs STEM, music, and art teachers with Innovators in Residence and GoSTEAM coaches to promote vertical teaming between schools, universities, and the community and engage students in creative STEAM-focused experiences. In its first full year, GoSTEAM recruited nine schools, 18 teachers, and nine innovators to work in teacherinnovator teams. These teams create and assess PreK12 interventions that authentically integrate the arts into the technical fields of engineering and computer science to promote deep learning in both areas. This school year, all teams are implementing their action plans to explore the impact of the collaboration on the integration of arts into computer science and engineering. Literacy for Learning, Living, and Leading in Georgia (L4GA) [Georgia Department of Education, $300,000]
The L4GA Program is a 4-year project serving 38 school districts throughout Georgia that is funded by the Georgia Department of Education. Guided by a systems approach to evaluation, the team uses social network analysis, document analysis, and focus group data on exploring and assessing the impacts of collaboration between school districts and community organizations on student literacy outcomes.
Mathematics Equity Summit
[Georgia Department of Education, DE00012764, $30,000]
On Tuesday, November 12, in partnership with the Georgia Department of Education, the 2019 Mathematics Equity Summit was held to address the inequity that students of Georgia face in mathematics. Ranging from classroom teachers to district and state leaders, the attendees worked to address the issues they face in their respective districts. The attendees engaged with K-12 and higher education leaders through panel discussions and facilitated working groups. These engagements allowed groups to reflect on the importance of mathematics equity and access and strategize around the role of leadership in closing long-standing and pervasive achievement gaps. 2019 YEAR IN REVIEW | 5
Sea Level Rise and Savannah: Middle School Curriculum [Climate Change Fellows, $8,152]
Funded by the Climate Change Fellows, Alex Robel of Georgia Tech Earth and Atmospheric Sciences and CEISMC’s Research Associate Jayma Koval wrote a phenomenon-based module for middle school Earth Science. In the curriculum, students are introduced to the Savannah region to understand better how coastal flooding and sealevel rise are impacting these communities. The Smart Sea Level Sensors project supports teacher professional development on the curriculum that is available through archived webinars.
