HOME

What is your thermostat set to? Dana: I have it set to 74 degrees during the day. Tim: When I come home from a long day in hot attics, I set it to 70 degrees. Dana: LOL! That’s why we have several throw blankets around. What do you enjoy most about the business you are in? Tim: Every day is a new experience. I enjoy the daily interaction with our customers. Dana: Yes, I enjoy the relationships that we have established. Biggest challenge to someone running a company like yours? Dana: Since we are a small family business, I would say that biggest challenge is wearing so many different hats. We all do a little bit of everything.

REID ANDERSON B E AC H H E AT I N G A N D A I R What is your thermostat set to? 74 degrees F What do you enjoy most about the business you are in? I most enjoy the relationships I make with clients and being able to help them when needed. Biggest challenge to someone running a company like yours? The biggest challenge for us is keeping up with the demand in this area. We never want our customers to wait for comfort. Advice from a pro on getting the most years out of your HVAC? Keep a yearly maintenance contract to ensure the longevity of your HVAC system. Anything new in HVAC systems or the technology that you think is really cool? The Wi-Fi thermostat, while not new, is much more affordable and accessible to every customer. Variable speed blower motors and compressors in high

efficiency systems ensure lower energy bills due to lower energy consumption. What’s your worst customer service story, either as the customer or as the employee? Although people can lose their “cool” when they lose their AC, our goal is for there never to be a bad experience for our customers. What is the dirtiest thing about your job? If Mike Rowe from Dirty Jobs TV show came to shadow you, what would you show him? Crawl spaces!

Advice from a pro on getting the most years out of your HVAC? Tim: Typically, systems in this area last 8-12 years. It sounds so cliché, but to get the most of your system, keep up with the maintenance. Changing your filters regularly and making sure your condensate drains stay clear will help. Anything new in HVAC systems or the technology that you think is really cool? Tim: It’s not necessarily new technology, but Internet-based Wi-Fi

thermostats. Many homeowners in this area are not here year-round. With this technology, they are able to monitor their HVAC system right from their smart phones. What’s your worst customer service story, either as the customer or as the employee? Dana: We’ve all been there. Tim: So, let’s not relive it! What is the dirtiest thing about your job? If Mike Rowe from Dirty Jobs TV show came to shadow you, what would you show him? Tim: I’ve never seen Mr. Rowe in an attic in the Lowcountry in the heat of the summer. Here is his invitation. Dana: I would show Mr. Rowe the inside of your work van.

COOL FACT!

What was cool when you were young but isn’t cool now? Tim: Disposable cameras! Waiting for the film to be developed. Dana: And not remembering what was on the camera. P.O. Box 23737 Hilton Head Island, SC 29925 (843) 681-2350 (843) 836-3000 mayriverhomeservices.com

YEAR IN THE INDUSTRY

YEARS IN THE INDUSTRY

DAVE M ILLE R S U P E R I O R

H E AT I N G

What is your thermostat set to? 73 What do you enjoy most about the business you are in? I enjoy knowing that we are making people’s lives more comfortable as well as providing a service that we can be proud of. Biggest challenge to someone running a company like yours? We never close, so that can be a huge challenge. Our busiest times are typically everyone else’s best times of the day or year: We are busy after 5 p.m., when everyone gets home and realizes it’s too hot or cold, and we are slammed in the summer, which is normally vacation time and typically vacation time for everyone else. And to top it off, our busiest day of the week is Saturday at 4 p.m., which we all know as “check-in time.” So, while everyone else is having fun, we are in the trenches! Advice from a pro on getting the most years out of your HVAC? Keep a maintenance plan on your equipment so that it stays in peak operating condition and clean. Anything new in HVAC systems or the technology that you think is really cool? We have an exclusive solar thermal product that we can install on certain types of systems that can reduce energy consumption by 50 percent in some cases. The solar thermal does not generate electricity like some would think. We heat

&

A I R

the refrigerant and let the sun do the work of the compressor, reducing energy consumption of the system. The icing on the cake is that solar thermal qualifies for a 55 percent tax credit, so it immediately pays for itself. What is the dirtiest thing about your job? If Mike Rowe from Dirty Jobs TV show came to shadow you, what would you show him? Crawl spaces in the Lowcountry. They are tight, dark and gross. We normally have to pay hazard pay bonuses to get guys to replace a duct system in a “belly crawl.” Just last week, we came across a family of poisonous snakes under a house we were working on. Then there are rats and other critters that love these damp areas. If it is low-lying enough, we get the pleasure of doing all the work in larger puddles.

COOL FACT

What was cool when you were young but isn’t cool now? I am Dave Miller. I try to set all the trends. If it was cool when I was young, it is probably still cool now or just becoming mainstream. Ha, that would be nice, but of course I am just kidding. To be honest, I was not too into fads, so I can’t really think of anything.
