Join us as we kick off the season with Jazz Along the Charles: A Walkable Concert on the DCR's Charles River Esplanade on September 23. Experience the talent of local artists and youth at Neighborhood Arts concerts throughout the season. JAZZ ALONG THE CHARLES SUNDAY | SEPTEMBER 23 | 2-4PM Charles River Esplanade, Boston jazzalongthecharles.org On a single fall afternoon, 25 jazz ensembles gather at a series of connected, walkable locations along the DCR's Charles River Esplanade, interpreting a curated list of Boston-related tunes in one collective concert that celebrates the great jazz community in Boston today. The audience will stroll along the Charles River on a onemile stretch, discovering new songs, artists, and areas of the Esplanade, creating a dynamic and evolving jazz concert experience. Jazz Along the Charles is a free public event, part of Celebrity Series’ commitment to free public performance experiences, open to all. NEIGHBORHOOD ARTS BRINGS THE JOY OF LIVE PERFORMANCE to six Boston neighborhoods, partnering with 50+ community organizations and Boston area artists who anchor interactive workshops for youth and community concerts in neighborhood venues in Dorchester, Hyde Park, Mattapan, Roslindale, Roxbury, and the South End.

COMPOSITION/PERCUSSION Shaw Pong Liu (composer, violin, erhu)

In a co-presentation with Shaw Pong Liu, Code Listen 3.0: Music for Healing and Dialogue is an original composition by Ms. Liu in collaboration with teen artists, Jason Palmer (trumpet), musicians of A Far Cry, the Boston Police Department and families of homicide victims, culminating in a performance at the Salvation Army Kroc Center.

Devin Ferreira (hip-hop) Devin Ferreira leads a fall residency with teens from the Inquilinos Boricuas en Acción Youth Program, culminating in a 50 Portraits of Villa Victoria showcase at the Villa Victoria gallery.

Ryan Edwards (composer, percussion) Ryan Edwards will lead three composition residencies with students at the Bates Elementary School, Boston Renaissance Charter School, and Hurley K-8 School. For the spring residency with Hurley, Urbanity Dance will collaborate on choreography.

Maria Finkelmeier (composer, percussion) and Bent Knee (rock band) Rock band Bent Knee makes their Neighborhood Arts debut in a collaborative concert with Maria Finkelmeier, percussionist, at the Benjamin Franklin Institute of Technology. Tickets are $5, proceeds to benefit Inquilinos Boricuas en Acción. Ms. Finkelmeier will also lead two spring residencies in electronic bucket drum improvisation for St. Stephen’s Church B-Ready after school program and the Rafael Hernández K-8 School.

DANCE

Jean Appolon Expressions (Haitian contemporary dance) Haitian dance group Jean Appolon Expressions performs at the Urban Arts Festival in Hyde Park. Jean Appolon also leads a dance residency and culminating performance for the Dudley Street Neighborhood Charter School.

Yo-El Cassell (contemporary dance and movement) Dance/theater movement artist Yo-El Cassell leads a spring residency with teens from the Inquilinos Boricuas en Acción Youth Program to be showcased along with the 360 Ensemble (theater movement troupe) at the Villa Victoria gallery.

LATIN/JAZZ

Jorge Arce and Raiz de Plena (Afro-Caribbean music) Afro-Caribbean musicians Jorge Arce and Raiz de Plena march in the parade and opening concert for Inquilinos Boricuas en Acción’s Festival Betances. Raiz de Plena also performs at the Puerto Rican Festival at Boston’s City Hall Plaza.

Veronica Robles (mariachi ensemble, Mexican music) A Day of the Dead family concert features Mexican singer Veronica Robles and her mariachi ensemble at Union United Methodist Church. Tickets are $5, proceeds to benefit IBA and Veronica Robles Cultural Center.

Jason Palmer Quintet (jazz) The Jason Palmer Quintet makes their Neighborhood Arts debut at Church of the Holy Spirit. Their spring concert at Hibernian Hall ($5 admission) will benefit the Dudley Street Neighborhood Initiative.

Duke Ellington Sacred Jazz Concerts Excerpts from Duke Ellington’s legendary Sacred Jazz will be conducted by Paul White, with a community choir from People’s Baptist Church, Bethel A.M.E. Church, and Boston City Singers, a jazz trio, narrator, and tap dancers, with two performances in May and June at Bethel A.M.E. Church and People’s Baptist Church.

STRINGS/VOICES

Castle of our Skins (Black artistry through music) Castle of our Skins leads the Dorchester Stringfest at the Kroc Center with Conservatory Lab Charter School, plus workshops at Boston Renaissance Charter School and Chittick Elementary School. COOS also performs community concerts at the Community Music Center of Boston, the Hyde Park Library, and Roslindale Community Center.

Soul Yatra Trio Mike Block (cello), Sandeep Das (tabla), Shaw Pong Liu (violin, erhu) leads the South End Stringfest at More Than Words with Boston String Academy and Josiah Quincy Orchestra workshops at schools in Boston, Mattapan and Roslindale.

Guy Mendilow Ensemble (world music) Heart of the Holidays: A Global Celebration in Song returns to the Kroc Center with the Guy Mendilow Ensemble and guest artists Regie Gibson, Courtney Swain, and Boston City Singers. For the Springboard songwriting residency, the Ensemble will collaborate with Irving Middle School, Futura Productions, and a photography project with the Lesley Ellis School.

Voci Angelica Trio (world music) Cello and vocal trio Voci Angelica leads the Roxbury Stringfest at Hibernian Hall with Boston CityWide String Orchestra and City Strings United, collaborates with Boston City Singers’ Cantare Choir for a concert at The Boston Home, and performs community concerts at the Hyde Park Library and Roslindale Community Center.

ABOUT CELEBRITY SERIES OF BOSTON Celebrity Series of Boston was founded in 1938 by pianist and impresario Aaron Richmond. Over the years, Celebrity Series has presented an array of the world’s great performing artists, including Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Marian Anderson, Mikhail Baryshnikov, Renee Fleming, Dizzy Gillespie, Glenn Gould, Martha Graham, Herbie Hancock, Yo-Yo Ma, Wynton Marsalis, Luciano Pavarotti, Itzhak Perlman, Leontyne Price, Sergei Rachmaninoff, Arturo Toscanini, and many more. Today Celebrity Series presents orchestras and chamber ensembles, vocal and piano music, contemporary dance, jazz, spoken word, and more.
