MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR AND PRESIDENT & EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Dear Friends, Welcome to Bravo!, Celebrity Series of Boston’s annual year-in-review publication. And what a year it was for arts organizations in Boston and beyond. The 2019/20 season will be remembered for its myriad challenges: the cancellation of the final third of our subscription season and dozens of Arts For All! performances and community workshops; the creation of a new digital performance environment; the transition to a virtual workplace for the very first time in Celebrity Series’ 82-year history; and absorbing the financial implications of all of the above. But the many challenges presented by the 2019/20 season also showcased our organization’s strength and resilience. We were humbled by the support of so many of our Celebrity Series family and friends who supported us through ticket donations and additional contributions, and the more than 40,000 households who tuned into our Neighborhood Arts livestream performances on Thursday evenings. Through a combination of quick action, conservative fiscal management, and the generosity of our donors, while Celebrity Series posted our first operating deficit in many years, we managed to avoid the existential threats faced by so many of our peers in the industry. In short, Celebrity Series will weather this storm and emerge stronger for it, thanks to you. Thank you for your continued support. While none of us knows quite what the future holds, we know that the future of Celebrity Series is brighter thanks to your investment in our mission to bring the very best live performance to everyone, everywhere. Be well, and thank you for being an important part of our family. With gratitude,

Joshua Boger Chair, Board of Directors

Gary Dunning President & Executive Director

MISSION / VISION

Trey McLaughlin and The Sounds of Zamar preceded their Sanders Theatre debut with a Joy of Singing workshop that taught gospel harmonies to165 singers from 16 local choirs. The singers joined us at Sanders and sang harmonies from their seats in an unforgettable event that transcended boundaries between performers and audience members.

4

MISSION To present performing artists who inspire and enrich our community.

VISION We believe in the power of excellence and innovation in the performing arts to enrich life experience, transform lives, and build better communities. We envision a community of Greater Boston where the performing arts are a valued, life-long, shared experience—on stages, on streets, in neighborhoods—everywhere.

CONCERT FOR ONE

Violist and New England Conservatory graduate Rayna Yun Chou created this project in Taiwan in 2016 to address concerns that classical music had become inaccessible and musicians’ feeling of isolation from their audience.

6

Hailed by the Boston Herald as “an absurdly ambitious public performance project,” Concert For One was a collaboration between Celebrity Series of Boston and artist Rayna Yun Chou. Individual listeners sat face-to-face with solo musicians for one minute of concentrated listening, distilling live performance to its most fundamental form. Over 10 days in September 2019, in Boston (Chin Park on the Rose Kennedy Greenway) and Cambridge (Harvard Science Plaza), nearly 5,000 performances by 58 local musicians took place inside a temporary art installation featuring an interactive lobby and performance space that had just enough room for two chairs, two people and an instrument.

While the 2019/20 mainstage performance season was abruptly cut short in March 2020, Celebrity Series presented a diverse and extraordinary array of artists over a six-month period. From groundbreaking debuts like Triptych, to beautiful Jordan Hall collaborations like Steven Osborne & Paul Lewis, to the power and mastery of the Los Angeles Philharmonic under Gustavo Dudamel, this season was one to remember.

ARTS FOR ALL! Our four Arts for All! community engagement programs – Artist Connections, Neighborhood Arts, Take Your Seat, and Public Performance Projects – embody our commitment to bringing the arts to everybody and everybody to the arts.

SPOTLIGHT ON CAMILLE A. BROWN & DANCERS With community workshops, post-performance artist talks, lecture demonstrations, and masterclasses for students from the elementary through conservatory levels, Artist Connections brings artists from around the world into our communities. In March 2020, three dancers from Camille A. Brown & Dancers led a free dance workshop “Double This, Juba That!,” at Hibernian Hall in Roxbury. 75 local youth dancers learned sections from Camille’s work, including social dance, hand-clapping games, doubledutch, steppin’, tap, Juba, ring shout, and other games showcased in Brown’s “BLACK GIRL: Linguistic Play.” Brown also met with the Boston Network of Arts Administrators of Color at Darryl’s Corner Bar & Kitchen in the South End during the company’s residency.

ARTS FOR ALL! ARTIST CONNECTIONS

SPOTLIGHT ON ALVIN AILEY AMERICAN DANCE THEATER Principal dancers Khalia Campbell, Solomon Dumas and Jessica Pinkett joined us for three days in January 2020, continuing a tradition of over a quarter century of Artist Connections residencies with Ailey dancers. The residency began at the WBUR CitySpace studio, Boston with Rocka My Soul - Gospel Music From The Church To The Stage. Dancer Solomon Dumas and Trey McLaughlin engaged in this panel discussion, exploring the ongoing impact of African American musical legacies on contemporary performing arts including dance, theater, choral work and more, as well as the indelible place of sacred music in Boston’s cultural scene. 16

The Ailey trio then led a masterclass for dance majors at Boston Arts Academy, Dorchester, and lecture/demonstrations at Charlestown High School and the Charlestown Boys and Girls Club. Finally, the Ailey artists conducted a community dance class for 45 youth from local dance studios BalletRox, Jo-Me Dance, Jose Mateo Ballet Theatre, Roxbury Performing Arts Center and Stajez Cultural Arts Center.

Artist Connections presented

24 artists in17 events in collaboration with 36 organizations, engaging 1,541 participants 13

ARTS FOR ALL! NEIGHBORHOOD ARTS In Neighborhood Arts, Boston-based artists led interactive workshops for youth and anchored community concerts in neighborhood venues in Dorchester, Hyde Park, Mattapan, Roslindale, and the South End, with 53 workshops and 20 concerts in 2019/20.

Our season-long Celebration of Puerto Rico began with a special Boston Tribute to legendary cellist Pablo Casals in October 2019. The tribute featured a concert of nine all-star local cellists, followed by a cello orchestra concert in the same weekend. The orchestra featured 56 cellists drawn from students and faculty at Berklee, Boston Conservatory, Boston University, Longy School of Music, New England Conservatory, and 14 professional organizations. This performance not only celebrated the legacy of Pablo Casals, but also premiered Suite Boricua, arranged by Neighborhood Arts cellist Aristides Rivas, accompanied by Boston-based Puerto Rican percussionists Jorge Arce and Gabriel Santiago.

Neighborhood Arts collaborated with

103 local artists, 123 youth collaborators, and 58 community organizations to offer 81 programs and activities, engaging 4,327 participants
