HOCHHAUS ARCHITECTURE Bremen, GERMANY

YEAR INSTITUTION PROJECT TYPE COLLABORATION

2017 University of Antwerp Architecture Mathilde Habousha

The Hochhaus concept is something very specific here. It is a downtown building integrated into its surrounding. Its height exceeds a few floors the neighboring buildings. The program related to this type of building is also very precise: a Hochhaus is characterized by an activity intended for public uses on the ground floor as well as housing on the upper floors. During this semester, the exercise was above all focused on the structural concept. The method followed during these few months was: the first phase of structural analysis led to structural models. The construction design had to include at least 3 different types of structure, had to be a 7 to 8-storey building considering its location in Bremen, Germany, and had to receive a 4000m² surface area. The program integration took place in the last weeks of the exercise. The great interest of this studio lied in its conceptual aspect. The theoretical approach placed the architectural aspect at the forefront. It allowed us to focus on our personal vision of architecture, to translate it into a spatial concept afterward. Finally, we expressed this concept in social and architectonical reality.

HOSPITALITY ARCHITECTURE Lyon, FRANCE

YEAR INSTITUTION PROJECT TYPE

2018 ENSA Paris Belleville Architecture

The conditions of acceptance of the refugee status in France induce an extremely long and painful process. First, migrants leave a country in which they are persecuted (racism, religion, war, sexual or political orientation, etc.). Then, they travel in precarious and dangerous conditions. Once in France, they begin administrative procedures and sign papers they do not understand (untranslated). Finally, after several years of waiting, the verdict arrives. If the asylum application is refused, the migrant is returned to his/ her home country (only 30% of asylum applications received a favorable opinion in 2017). If the asylum application is accepted, the refugee can begin a vocational reorientation process (it is very rare to see a migrant practicing in France the profession he used to exercise in the country he left). During the time of this project, I chose to work on cultural diversity. The welcome of migrants being a current issue, very controversial, it seemed interesting to reflect on the idea of french hosting through architecture. This notion can be considered at different scales: from the city to the bedroom. Indeed, after the difficulties by which the refugees have passed through, the gradation of the spaces allows a smooth social integration: intimate (bedroom), semi-collective (shared living room), collective (classrooms, gym, etc.) and public (laundry, Fab-Lab, etc.). Public spaces are symbolized by the use of concrete, a hard and durable material as a continuity with the street, while housing is represented by a prefabricated wood assembly, to accelerate the construction of a building often considered unwelcome. The major goal of a center such as this one is to foster migrant/resident relations through the cultural appeal and services that this type of equipment provides to the city. The location chosen here is a parking lot currently unused in the 7th arrondissement of Lyon, a fast-developing neighborhood. Lyon is today the 3rd place of access for immigrants in France.

FOOD SUPPLY URBANISM Ile-de-France, FRANCE

YEAR INSTITUTION PROJECT TYPE COLLABORATION

2019 ENSA Paris Belleville Urban strategy ClĂŠmence MEYER

Mass food distribution in Paris and its region participates in the organization - or disorganization - of the territory. Our reflection on this subject comes from an analytical nature at first, prospective and critical in a second time. We question the role of productive agricultural lands in ĂŽle-de-France and analyze their links with the food distribution sites, including urban logistics. The choice of the project site focuses on a portion of the Paris Region that is conducive to the study of local vegetables production and distribution: le Triangle Vert (the Green Triangle). This sample contains a larger proportion of agricultural land than the rest of the region. In addition, local elected officials encourage sustainable agriculture and market gardening. We rely on trends already present in the territory to set up a prospective project in order to form alternative proposals (support for market gardening and local distribution, bursting of retail outlets in small supermarkets downtown, connections between the various actors of the territory ...). Those proposals represent a critic of Parisian food distribution mechanisms and the way mass distribution buildings participate in urban sprawl. Our position cross landscape, aesthetic, social, political and ecological issues.

AFRICAN ARCHITECTURE LomĂŠ, TOGO

YEAR AGENCY

2017 Espace Architecture

Lome is a city whose rapid evolution placed it as an economic pole of West Africa. On one side, the business district offers a luxurious aspect of the city and, on the other hand, popular markets dotted here and there are a chaotic and saturated. West-african urbanism is totally different from what I have learned from European metropolises. This experience abroad has been an opportunity to make a critical questioning regarding the teaching that I received throughout my learning in Europe. In Western contemporary architecture, originality is often sought after. Indeed, current architectural trends use and abuse unusual forms. In LomĂŠ, buildings imagined by architects are, in reference to the western trends, punctual elements that do not seek to integrate the urban context. Therefore, freedom of expression is enormous regarding the shapes and colors chosen to coat a construction. The main obstacle on a construction site is, as often, due to financial concerns. The project presented here is about the transformation of an existing one-storey building imagined for commercial activities and previously unfinished. My professional goal is to continue working closely with international agencies and never stop discovering new ways of living. To me, architecture can not be limited to a particular way of life, it must evolve constantly. That is possible by an endless and various learning.

ARCHITECTURAL HERITAGE Paris, FRANCE

YEAR AGENCY

from 2016 VALARI Architecte

French architectural heritage is known all around the world. I had the chance to approach this field during an internship with A. Bravaccio, heritage architect, who passed on to me his passion for this discipline. Since then, I continue to work on it and go deeper into the knowledge of architectural heritage. In general, during a restoration or any work on a listed building, a particular attention is paid to the understanding of the building: its contextual, architectural and historical layout. The role of these architects is to work for the preservation and enhancement of natural and built heritage, for its transmission to future generations.

DESIGN BASED ON WOOD ELASTICITY

A BOOKSHELF WITH ITS LAMP

WOOD DESIGN YEAR 2016

Wood is a material full of qualities. This is a renewable resource, a moisture regulator, a storage for carbon, a link between tradition and modernity, a living material with attractive thermal properties, etc. For all of those reasons, I like to work with this material at different scales. The picture to the left presents a wooden shelf whose design is based on the elasticity of wood. To this shelf is incorporated electrical wiring, allowing a moving lamp to integrate the object. In the following pages, the wooden construction is at the scale of a small building. With a studio group from ENSA Paris-Belleville, we visited Calais jungle, largest refugee camp in France. Above all, we tried to understand the camp organization logics and the forms of living that follow. In a second step, we imagined some architectural projects related to its inhabitants needs. Finally, we were able to build a legal center on the Linière refugee camp, 40 km from Calais jungle. The facility consists of two small separate buildings. Their position on a pedestal creates access spaces and waiting spaces. The construction of the whole lasted a little over a week and many migrants got interrested in working with us.
